New 'Rogue One' TV Spot: Jyn Inspires Hope and Rebellion Posted: We've seen a lot of fiery speeches this election cycle, but the one delivered in the latest "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" TV spot may be the only one to attract support across party lines. Called "Together," the new ad features Jyn (Felicity Jones) trying to build support for a rebellion against the Empire. The brutal government is building a dangerous weapon -- the Death Star -- and she is determined to stop them. "We have hope," says Jyn. "Rebellions are built on hope. Are you with me?" With her speech, she'd join her cause. Of course, we're not her target audience, so we'll have to see who she's able to round-up to join her risky mission. The film also stars Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed. "Rogue One" is directed by Gareth Edwards. The screenplay was written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, based on a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta. The "Star Wars" spinoff hits theaters Dec. 16. Stephen Colbert's Election Night Special Could Get Racy, Hints Showrunner Posted: Politics and nudity usually only mix in Anthony Weiner's text messages, but that may not be the case on Tuesday. "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert is scheduled to host a live election night special on Showtime Tuesday, and it sounds like we might get more than we bargained for. Chris Licht, showrunner and executive producer of "The Late Show," hinted to Variety in a recent interview that Colbert and the writers may take full advantage of Showtime's censorship rules -- or, rather, lack thereof. "There is one Showtime rule: If there's male full-frontal nudity, it can't be happy to see Stephen, if you know what I mean," said Licht. As you can imagine, that leaves writers with a lot of leeway, and it sounds like they welcome the opportunity to push the envelope. Go big or go home, right? "For comedy's sake, there may be some things we do on the show simply because we can," said Licht. "The writers are very excited about the opportunity. I'll just leave it at that." That there will be profanity already seems like a given, but nudity would be new territory. Of course, whether or not the show will actually go there remains to be seen. The Showtime broadcast will be live on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT; a censored version of the special will air on CBS on Friday. 'Marvel's The Defenders': Elektra From 'Daredevil' Joins Superhero Series Posted: "Marvel's The Defenders" won't lack for familiar faces -- and another returning character has just been announced. The superhero cross-over series will reunite characters from multiple Netflix shows when it premieres in 2017, and we now know that Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung) from "Daredevil" will be among them. Elektra made her "Daredevil" debut during Season 2, appearing as a blast from the past for Matt Murdock (Charlie Day). Their history and on-again, off-again relationship, plus her serious combat skills, made for some interesting material. Like Elektra, Matt (also known as Daredevil) will star in "The Defenders." He'll join forces with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) to form an all-star superhero team, ready to protect the people of New York City. News of Elektra's involvement came today, in the form of a tweet with a quick glimpse at the character in all her intense glory. — The Defenders (@TheDefenders) November 7, 2016 "The Defenders" will continue Marvel's adventures on Netflix in 2017. How Thandie Newton Built 'Westworld' Madam Maeve Millay Posted: Suddenly, Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton), the world-weary, iron-willed madam of the old-fashioned bordello at the center of the high-tech amusement park, is "Westworld's" biggest wild card. With her awareness of exactly who and what she is outside of the context of her Old West fantasy setting amped up to 11 -- or 20, in Westworld's techie terms -- Maeve is now a major force to be reckoned with inside the real-world environment, ready to work an agenda that can only be guessed at. As Maeve's evolution unfolds, actress Thandie Newton shared with Moviefone the behind-the-scenes secrets of how she assembled her android agent provocateur -- the voice, that steely glare, that skimpy frontier lingerie -- from the ground up. Moviefone: What an acting challenge to play a synthetic being who is only just discovering that they have feelings and memories and such. Where did you start to figure out how to come at this? Thandie Newton: Well, our showrunners gave me the broad arc of where the story was going for my character, and it was really ambitious and fascinating, but they were just the broad strokes. So, from episode to episode, I wouldn't necessarily know what was going to happen next. And it is, in retrospect, an absolute feat that they managed to oversee our work, knowing what was going to come, because if I'd had to figure out for myself, knowing everything I was going to have to do, it would have seemed like an impossible task, really and truly. I look back at the first episode and think if I had known then what I know now ... Of course, I could have known everything and figured it out, but it was actually a really fantastic sort of layering of traits of the character which were completely led by the script. And, in terms of the physicality of the character, yes, there were many conversations about what kind of movement are we talking about. And, obviously all the people playing hosts, there needs to be similarities to our core behavior so that you can relate to all of them, or maybe identify with them before even, you know? And they wanted us to achieve full human naturalness. So it's actually funny, because I assumed that playing in artificial intelligence, playing a robot, I would need to do some kind of robotics, but it was the opposite there. I actually had to be as perfectly human as I could be. In fact, I had to be the best version of being human, because that was the point to us. And as a human being, we're programmed in terms of the influences that we receive as children, the education we receive -- we're made up of all of the different programs from outside, some random, some specific. And someone who is dealing with trauma in childhood, let's say for an example, you can be, you can take out that program and decide that you want to behave differently than having panic attacks every five seconds. So that that would also inform the way I saw her. And what's so glorious about playing this artificially intelligent woman is that I actually got to be the best version of being a human. Physically, with my voice, because everything was so definite, and still and controlled, and unfussed by anything. You see this one scene where there's mayhem going on in the saloon, and she just stays completely calm because she's only interested in what's important to her. If we could all be like that, it would be amazing, right? So that alone was an interesting comment on being a human being, and I've carried stuff with me. Whether it's meditation or yoga, achieving a state of enlightenment is something that I think about. I don't practice enough, obviously, but it's something that I'm fascinated by and there is this sense that the robots are more impressively human than humans themselves. On top of all those sort of heady acting challenges, you get to dress up as a woman who worked in a bordello. Tell me the fun, visceral side of performing in an Old West past, because, like the robots being more human than humans, she's more madam than the madams in the way she's designed. Absolutely. Well, you know, I took my inspiration from some of the greats, you know: Julie Christie in "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," Claudia Cardinale in Sergio Leone's movies. Oh, it was fun looking at all of that stuff, because the Western is invented. It's not real. The whole man on the horse, Marlboro Man with the hat and the machismo run wild, and savages, and all that horrifying nonsense. But it was fun because I knew we were going to be subverting it, and that it wouldn't be these awful gender stereotypes and objectification of women, and exploitation of women, and precisely the reason we had to present them in their full, untarnished grossness was because we were going to be commenting on it, very quickly. I feel like that when I watch it. It's like, "Oh, whoa, and then it's like, OK, now let's get into deconstructing all of this and commenting on it." And so it was fun. Although, I've got to say I felt really exposed in that costume. I felt more exposed in that costume than I did naked, and I spend half the time naked on the show. Because I was very ... just aware of the corset with the little waist, the ruffled skirt, and very short skirt, inviting a look with the garter that takes your eyes there so that you're looking. I mean, it's all created to elicit lust from the onlooker. And I felt very uncomfortable because that's not the kind of attention I invite in my life, not the kind of attention I would suggest anyone invites into their life because it predisposes that that's all a woman is really there for. Or a person is there for, if it's a man that's doing the same thing. So I really did feel uncomfortable wearing that outfit -- I really, really did. I would actually wear a dressing gown over the top of it when I wasn't shooting because if I was talking to crew members, who were so lovely and so respectful, they would just be looking at my breasts. And, funnily enough, at the time I was nursing -- I was nursing my baby the whole way through the show, so it was even more inappropriate that I had boobs this high up, but that's the whole point. So, I as Thandie was experiencing the wrongness in the same way that we hopefully will also have a sense of, at least as an option away from "Aw, that's how you want to look as a woman, didn't it feel good?" And she might say, "Yes, but with Westworld it's going to be an option that you would think about it from a slightly different point of view," and that's valuable. Would you, minus technological glitches and moral conundrums, want to go into an immersive environment like Westworld? Would that be an interesting thing for you to do? No. I only like listening to music occasionally, because I'm aware that it's not real. It's not really happening right now, here. So the idea of going into a place that's virtual -- I don't even like to go into shopping malls because I feel like it's a further disconnection from life. The idea of going and spending a day, and we have shopping malls now that are like little cities, little towns, and you can have food, and there's trees, and you can even feel like you're sitting under the sun. Look, I'm just a scaredy-cat when it comes to that stuff. It might be really the only answer in our future, but no, I would so not. Although, I went to Six Flags recently with my daughter and had the best time. She taught me the trick of all tricks, which is just to close your eyes, and it worked, and I went on the rollercoasters with my kids and had a brilliant time. So, you know, maybe I should resist less. "Westworld" airs Sunday nights on HBO. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Season 12 Premiere Is Set Posted: The gang returns for Season 12 soon. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is coming back with more crazy antics and shenanigans, and FX Networks has finally announced its premiere date. The long-running comedy series will resume shortly after the New Year, on Jan. 4. It'll be the perfect antidote to the post-holiday blues. There are big plans for the gang in Season 12. Not only will they be back at Paddy's Pub, they'll visit a waterpark and become embroiled in a PR disaster in the episodes to come. It sounds like the show will be as eventful, ridiculous, and hilarious as always. Stars Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito are all back, reprising their roles as Mac, Dennis, Charlie, Dee, and Frank, respectively. Meanwhile, McElhenney, Howerton, and Day executive produce, along with Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Tom Lofaro, Scott Marder, and David Hornsby. Jan. 4 will be a good night for comedy on FXX; in addition to the "It's Always Sunny" premiere, "Man Seeking Woman" will return for its third season. Early 'Moana' Reviews Praise Disney's Newest Princess Posted: Early reviews are beginning to trickle in for Disney's newest animated flick, "Moana," and the story of a young Polynesian princess on a quest to save her people has some critics comparing the film to other classics in the studio's celebrated canon. Most reviews have pointed out that while many story beats of "Moana" feel familiar -- especially the self-empowerment message at the movie's heart, not to mention the obligatory presence of a wacky animal sidekick -- it continues the Mouse House's recent animation renaissance, boasting gorgeous visuals, soaring songs, and fully realized characters. Here's a breakdown of some of the most glowing reviews so far: Variety: Critic Peter Debruge calls the film "a musical adventure that's a worthy addition alongside 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin,'" and notes that the titular character (voiced by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) is "one of Disney's most remarkable heroines yet: Rather than waiting for her prince (or whomever) to come, Moana takes control of her own destiny." Debruge concludes, "As princess movies go, this one broadens the studio's horizons." The Hollywood Reporter: "Moana" is "a delight," according to critic Michael Rechtshaffen, who writes, "Appealing equally to the eyes, ears, heart and funny bone, 'Moana' represents contemporary Disney at its finest — a vibrantly rendered adventure that combines state-of-the-art CG animation with traditional storytelling and colorful characters, all enlivened by a terrific voice cast." Rechtshaffen was especially impressed by the film's "infectious, soul-stirring songs by 'Hamilton' sensation Lin-Manuel Miranda along with score composer Mark Mancina and Samoan musician Opetaia Tavita Foa'i," adding that the music makes "Moana" "a tropical 'Frozen' with the potential for a similarly wide-reaching audience." IndieWire: Critic Eric Kohn notes that Disney has taken great pains to avoid its previous missteps with cultural insensitivity, noting that "Moana"'s diverse creative team "yields a lively opus that feels at once old school and modern." The film does occasionally fall into some of Disney's well-worn story tropes, Kohn writes, but is ultimately "Visually dazzling and loaded with charm" and "an especially crisp realization of that formula, set in a rich world of bright colors, detailed expressions and buoyant songs, all of which revolve around the mission of fiercely individualistic young woman." Entertainment Weekly: "Moana" is "a worthy successor to Disney's most beloved animated classics," writes critic Devan Coggan, who notes that the film also "pushes the genre into 2016, introducing a smart, diverse, and convincing heroine who struggles against lava monsters and self-doubt." While the flick "has a lot of the hallmarks of your classic Disney adventure — the goofy animal sidekicks, the feel-good messages," Coggan says "its heroine is something new, a smart and fiery deviation from your standard European lovestruck princesses." "Moana" hits theaters on November 23. A 'Big Bang Theory' Prequel Series About Sheldon Could Be Coming to CBS Posted: It's currently unclear if CBS comedy hit "The Big Bang Theory" will continue past its current 10th season, but the network hopes to keep the "TBBT" brand alive with a spinoff series centered around the show's breakout character. According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS is currently developing a prequel to the show that will focus on a young version of Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), with sources telling the trade that it's being modeled on another coming of age sitcom, "Malcolm in the Middle." Parsons will reportedly executive produce the project, which was conceived by "Big Bang" creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and will be executive produced by showrunner Steve Molaro. The spinoff news comes as "TBBT" currently sits in renewal limbo, with the main cast -- who famously secured $1 million per episode paydays back in 2014 -- set to renegotiate their contracts, and reportedly angle for even bigger paychecks. While the show is still a hit for CBS (it remains America's most-watched comedy in the 18-49 demographic), it may make more financial sense for the Eye to cut ties with it now, before costs balloon further; adding the prequel into the mix would continue the brand, but with a new, smaller-salaried cast. No other details about the new show have been revealed yet. Stay tuned to see how this project pans out. 'Stranger Things' Season 2 Adds Sean Astin, Paul Reiser as New Characters Posted: Filming is already underway on the sophomore season of Netflix sensation "Stranger Things," and the '80s-set series is doubling down on its homages to pop culture from that decade with some high-profile new additions to the cast. Entertainment Weekly reports that the show has landed Sean Astin and Paul Reiser to play two new characters with connections to the core gang, and both actors have roles in their past that wink to some of the streaming series's main influences. "Lord of the Rings" star Astin played the lead in 1985's beloved kids adventure flick "The Goonies" (to which "Stranger Things" has been compared), while "Mad About You" star Reiser had a key role as a villain in "Aliens," a sequel that "Stranger Things" creators Ross and Matt Duffer previously told EW was part of their inspiration for Season 2. In addition to Astin and Reiser, Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen has also joined the ensemble. Here's a breakdown of the three new characters, according to Netflix and EW:

Rami Malek to Play Freddie Mercury in Queen Biopic, Bryan Singer to Direct: Report Posted: The long-gestating biopic about rock band Queen got a major boost this past weekend, with a new report suggesting that the flick has secured a high-profile pair to star and direct. According to Deadline, "Mr. Robot" star Rami Malek is set to play frontman Freddie Mercury, and "X-Men" director Bryan Singer will helm the flick, titled "Bohemian Rhapsody." The project recently moved from studio Sony to 20th Century Fox and New Regency, and Deadline reports that it's "on the fast track," with producers hoping to start filming sometime in early 2017. Malek and Singer's involvement is a big step forward for the project, which has been in development for eight years with various stars and directors attached at one time or another. The biggest name associated with the project in recent years was Sacha Baron Cohen, who was to play Mercury until clashes with surviving Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor over the story prompted him to exit the production. Ben Whishaw was the latest actor linked to the Mercury role, but he, too, left over creative differences. May and Taylor are still on board the project under the new Malek-Singer team, and will serve as music producers on the flick. Writer Anthony McCarten ("The Theory of Everything") will pen the screenplay. Deadline notes that the creative team behind the film, which includes producer Graham King and his GK Films banner, as well as the Fox-New Regency partnership, has a history of Oscar success (King took home a trophy for producing "The Departed," while Fox and New Regency cleaned up with high-profile wins for "12 Years a Slave," "Birdman," and The Revenant"), and the Queen flick could be courting similar awards attention. Malek already has an Emmy under his belt thanks to his buzzy "Mr. Robot" performance; could an Oscar be next? First we'll have to see if this long-troubled project can actually get off the ground. Stay tuned. [via: Deadline] Photo credit: Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Stranger Things' Season 2 'Scope Feels Bigger' With Epic Episode 4 Posted: Here's some exciting "Stranger Things" Season 2 news to keep your Christmas lights blinking until the 2017 premiere. The first four episodes of Season 2 are "going to be a ride," Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) promised, and you should really keep an eye out for Episode 4. It'll go to 11! Heaton teased some good stuff ahead on the Netflix series, while promoting his new movie "Shut In" to Entertainment Tonight. "Stranger Things" Season 2 picks up a year after Season 1, but it won't feel like we're missing much. "I don't think you're gonna notice," Heaton told ET. "Even though it's a year, you're falling straight back into where we left off, in a sense." They just had to "let things settle" for the story, and also acknowledge as a series that the young actors had aged a year. Watch his interview:Season 2 is adding a couple of new characters -- and those actors were included in the recent first table read photo. The Duffer brothers said Season 2 would be "darker" with "a bigger mythology behind what happened." We'll spend more time exploring the "inter-dimensional" rift of the Upside Down, among other things. And apparently we WILL see justice for Barb ... even if she might not be alive for it. Matthew Lewis's Reaction to 'Harry Potter' Play May Make You Cry Posted: Oh, Neville, when are you going to stop breaking our hearts with your perfection? The "Harry Potter" movie actors started as fans, and when Matthew Lewis isn't Neville, he's one of us. A hotter version of us, but still a fan who just fell in love with the world of Potter all over again. Lewis is not a part of the stage play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" -- set after the events of the final film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" -- but he saw the production and wrote a touching, heartfelt post on Instagram in its honor:
That's so beautiful. Here's the actor with the "Cursed Child" cast: Matthew Lewis is far from the only Harry Potter OG to check out the two-part play on stage. Emma Watson praised the show, and the new Hermione, and Rupert Grint posed with the new Ron. Let's hope they enjoy the world of "Fantastic Beasts" just as much. Want more stuff like this? Baby Groot Is the Unexpected Winner of 'Doctor Strange' Opening Posted: "Doctor Strange" had an impressive opening weekend, but for some fans the biggest takeaway was Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" teaser featuring Baby Groot. Sorry, Sorcerer Supreme, you're just not as cute! "Guardians" director James Gunn has been fielding comments from fans who enjoyed seeing Baby Groot on the big screen and can't wait to see the new trailer, never mind the full movie in 2017. Here's a fan tweet, first, then Gunn's reaction:
The first "Vol. 2" sneak peek was released last month, and Gunn promised the full trailer would be coming soon. There's more to the movie than just Baby Groot, but Vin Diesel did say that his Groot would have to "start all over, so to speak" in the sequel, "so we're gonna see kind of this goofy, adorable, Baby Groot thing running around the screen and just kind of learning as he goes. Yeah, I think people are gonna love this movie. I think people are gonna love 'Guardians.'" It does seem like the hype train is moving especially fast for Vol. 2, from Chris Pratt saying it will be the biggest spectacle movie of all time, to Gunn promising great roles for the women, to everyone already melting for Baby Groot. "Guardians of the Galaxy" Vol. 2 opens May 5, 2017. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
See 'Game of Thrones' Cast Mobbed by Screaming Fans 'Halfway' Through Season 7 Posted: Um, wow. Talk about a royal welcome! We're huge "Game of Thrones" fans, but Seville, Spain, may be the GoT fandom capital of the world because the residents are going full Beatles, Elvis, One Direction, Belieber on the cast as they film Season 7. Watchers on the Wall has been following the HBO stars, who recently arrived in the south of Spain for filming. The spoiler details are still pretty fascinating -- and it's very telling to see which actors keep appearing together -- but it's hard to get past the OVERWHELMING love for the actors. Even little kids, who should be way too young for GoT, were out in force to meet Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), and company. Remember when no one was quite sure George R.R. Martin's books would translate into a success on HBO? Now look at how popular GoT is now: Total rock stars! The cast and producers also went out to dinner together and to see a "football" match, among other fun, and here are some photos from that, starting with Emilia Clarke's post with fellow queen Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister). Don't miss the caption on that one, since she references being "half way through filming" for Season 7:
See a lot more photos, and filming spoilers (if you want them), at Watchers on the Wall. Season 7 won't arrive on HBO until summer 2017. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Like Daryl, 'The Walking Dead' Fans Feel Tortured by 'Easy Street' Song Posted: Ugh. Is it still in your head, too? Last night, "The Walking Dead" Season 7 tortured Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and the audience with a constant loop of the unrelentingly cheerful song "Easy Street," by the band The Collapsable Hearts Club:Even the song's writer, Jim Bianco, was surprised to hear it on the show, but ultimately told the Independent the decision was "genius":
Poor Daryl was definitely tortured in "The Cell," forced to eat dog food, look at a photo of bashed-in Glenn, wear the letter "A" -- which gives us Terminus and little Sam flashbacks -- and now face whatever is next from Negan since he refused to join the We Are All Negan cult. But the worst torture was having to listen to that earworm over and over, and we are still suffering. TWD fans had a lot to say about #EasyStreet, which ended up trending on Twitter, and was further mocked (with love!) on "Talking Dead":
Of course, some fans didn't mind it ... but they might not mind dog food sandwiches either:
This coming Episode 4 is supersized to 85-90 minutes (it'll probably only be about 20 minutes after commercials) with Negan arriving at Alexandria for the first time.
