The Geek Beat: Some Geeky Things To Be Thankful For This Year

Posted: 22 Nov 2016 09:00 PM PST

It’s the time of year for giving thanks, and you know what? Fans of science-fiction, fantasy, and superhero movies have a lot to be thankful for this year. Sure, it might not seem like it when you consider how many big movies failed to win over critics and audiences, became the focus of controversy, or simply couldn’t find a way to bring people into the theater. But none of that changes the fact that there were a lot of big wins and positive, trend-setting projects that arrived in theaters during 2016, too -- and we haven’t even seen the latest star Wars movie yet. Here are a few people, projects, and various other elements from the world of geek-friendly films that we’re thankful for this year.   Tim Miller (or whoever leaked the Deadpool test...

'Star Wars' and Marvel Buzz: Han Solo Movie Is Like a Western; X-Men Won't Join the MCU

Posted: 22 Nov 2016 07:00 PM PST

Variety has a lot of coverage of Disney's movie empire this week, and that includes some focus on their acquired brands Star Wars and Marvel. Here's some interesting buzz from interviews with the heads of both those properties:   Rogue One and Han Solo  Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy discussed the future of the Star Wars spinoff movies with Variety, acknowledging that they're very interested in having a woman direct one of the installments and that virtual reality is a priority for the franchise. She also talks about the currently known spinoffs, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the untitled young Han Solo and Chewbacca picture. They will be very different in tone, she explains, describing the former as a World War...

Remember When... 'The Addams Family' Convinced Us It Was a Good Idea to Turn TV Shows into Movies?

Posted: 22 Nov 2016 06:00 PM PST

Before the 1990s, big-screen versions of live-action TV shows were rare, and their track record was spotty. For every successful franchise like Star Trek or The Muppets, there were flops like the Get Smart film The Nude Bomb (1980); modest hits like Dragnet (1987) that succeeded only by skewing the tone of the original show; or anthologies like Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), unburdened by any obligation to recreate specific beloved characters. The idea of, "Hey, remember this TV show? Here it is again, as a movie!" was risky and mostly untested.  And then, 25 years ago this week, we got The Addams Family. Though technically based on Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons, the film had many elements that had been invented...

'Dune' Gets a New Chance At The Big Screen From 'Pacific Rim' Studio

Posted: 22 Nov 2016 04:30 PM PST

Nothing in Hollywood is a guaranteed thing. Incredible movies bomb all the time, while total critical disasters surprisingly blow-up the box office. Studios can, however, significantly hedge their bets if a movie is based on an existing property. And if that property not only has a following already, but is based on something vast that could easily spawn sequel after sequel, it's like discovering a new world. To that end, one such world just waiting to be conquered by Hollywood is Frank Herbert's Dune. If you've never seen David Lynch's rather loose adaptation of it, or some of the miniseries based on it, Dune is a sprawling space epic about different planets, and races, fighting over intergalactic resources. It's a fantasy world full of political intrigue and...

Angela Bassett Joins Marvel's 'Black Panther'

Posted: 22 Nov 2016 12:00 PM PST

Ever since Iron Man in 2008, Marvel has cast its movies carefully. As a result, their movies have featured a rich variety of newcomers, rising stars and old hands. Most of their movies could be considered as having all-star ensembles who support the lead characters. The quality of the performances helps us to accept superpowered characters and their often outlandish actions. The upcoming Black Panther looks to be no exception. Chadwick Boseman will star as T'Challa, who became the ruler of African nation Wakanda after his father was killed in Captain America: Civil War. Boseman has demonstrated his star power as Jackie Robinson in 42 and as James Brown in Get on Up, so portraying T'Challa, also known as Black Panther, should be another great showcase for him. Marvel and...
