‘Die Hard’ helmer teams with André Morgan for WWII actioner Posted: 02 Nov 2016 12:02 AM PDT John McTiernan – the legendary filmmaker behind Die Hard, Predator, The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard with A Vengeance – is ready for action. WWII action, that is. According to CFI, McTiernan has signed to direct an untitled WWII film about the aftermath of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942, which was the first air strike to hit the Japanese Home Islands. Its name was derived from Lieutenant Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle of the United States Army Air Forces, who led the raid. Hollywood and Hong Kong’s André Morgan (Tower of Death) – who is mostly known for his association with Golden Harvest studios – is on board as producer. There are currently no other details regarding additional cast or crew. Ever since McTiernan’s 2014 prison release, he’s been connected to some “come back” projects that ultimately fell through. The first was a mercenary thriller called Red Squad. The second was Warbirds, a Top Gun-like action flick that would have starred John Travolta. Here’s hoping this upcoming WWII film will see the light of day and serve as a proper comeback for one of Hollywood’s best filmmakers. Shooting is expected to start next year in China. Stay tuned. ‘The Raid’ filmmaker to make religious cult thriller ‘Apostle’ Posted: 02 Nov 2016 12:00 AM PDT While we’re all anxiously waiting for The Raid 3, Gareth Evans (Merantau), the creator of The Raid franchise, has another project in mind: Apostle, a period thriller that may be next feature film. According to THR, Apostle is about a man who attempts to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a religious cult, which is demanding a ransom for her return. But it soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man, who digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built. No casting details are currently available. XYZ Films, Severn Screen and Evans’ One More One Productions will produce Apostle, which is slated for a March 2017 production start. The other Evans project in the air is Blister, a "contemporary American gangster story with echoes of The Wild Bunch," according to Evans. The film was intended to begin production this year, but for whatever reason, it has been pushed back and currently remains in limbo. |
‘Kiss of the Dragon’ filmmaker is back with ‘Lady Bloodfight’ Posted: 02 Nov 2016 12:00 AM PDT Bey Logan’s A&E Productions and the LA-based Voltage Pictures (the company that produced Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker) are getting ready to release Lady Bloodfight (aka Lady Bloodsport), an upcoming “female” martial arts flick, starring Amy Johnston (Raze). Directed by Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon), Lady Bloodfight tells the story of two rival martial arts masters who each train a student to compete in a secret underground tournament. The film also stars Jenny Wu, Muriel Hofman, Kathy Wu, Sharon Zhang, Jet Tranter and Mayling Ng. Watch the trailer below (via FCS): |
Max Zhang vs. UFC’s Anderson Silva in ‘Dragon Tattoo’? Posted: 01 Nov 2016 09:00 AM PDT Max Zhang – the rising star of The Grandmaster and Ip Man 3 – will once again appear alongside his SPL II co-star, Louis Koo (Wild City), in The Man with the Dragon Tattoo, an upcoming action thriller from Fruit Chan (Made in Hong Kong). The film also stars Annie Liu (Hungry Ghost Ritual) and UFC champ Anderson Silva. Details on The Man with the Dragon Tattoo are thin, but according to AFS, Zhang and Silva will have a match, a la Donnie Yen vs. Mike Tyson in Ip Man 3. Zhang has many other projects in the works, including The Brink, S.P.L 3: War Needs Lord, as well as an unofficial Ip Man 3 spin-off. As for Koo, well, the guy has a new film every week. Since The Man with the Dragon Tattoo is currently in production, we expect to see some behind-the-scenes photos soon. Stay tuned! For now, here’s the trailer for the Jim Kelley classic, The Tattoo Connection (it obviously has no relation to Dragon Tattoo, other than having the word ‘tattoo’ in its title – nothing wrong with randomness, right?). |
