What the Long-Delayed 'Area 51' Actually Gets Right About Sci-fi and Horror

Posted: 21 May 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Welcome to The Last Sci-Fi Blog, a biweekly column on all things science fiction. This week we take a look at Oren Peli's long-delayed Area 51. Was it worth the wait? Find out below. Area 51 was supposed to be director Oren Peli's immediate follow-up to Paranormal Activity, the film that sent shockwaves through the horror genre and transformed its maker into an overnight sensation. Instead, the found footage sci-fi/horror movie was filmed in 2009 and sat on the shelf for years, eventually getting a quiet (and very limited) theatrical run this month. Most of the people who do watch it will watch it on some kind of streaming service. Most of the people who watch it will not like it. That shouldn't come as a surprise -- did anyone think that a movie delayed for...

The Cryptic Easter Egg in 'Ex Machina' That You Probably Didn't See

Posted: 21 May 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Easter eggs are now a regular feature of any proper geek-targeting movie because we geeks love puzzles and spotting things with extra-special relevance. Mostly we find Easter eggs in the movies of Pixar, Marvel and major franchise releases like Mad Max: Fury Road. And usually they're at least easy enough to spot that lists of such goodies pop up online as early as the weekend of said movie's release (here's one for Fury Road). Most movies don't exactly bury their Easter eggs so they can potentially rot, like real eggs. Ex Machina is not like most movies. For one thing, it's better than your average sci-fi release. But for another thing, it's got a significant Easter egg that is only now coming to our attention four months after its debut overseas and more...

Watch: This 'Batkid Begins' Trailer Will Give You All The Feels

Posted: 21 May 2015 04:39 PM PDT

Forget all those fictional superhero movies for a moment and prepare yourself for a real-life superhero story that's also one of the year's most heartwarming tales. Yes, we're talking about Batkid, aka Miles Scott, a little boy who was battling his way through cancer and only had one wish: to become Batman... for real. What happened next was pretty extraordinary, and you get a sense of that from this first official trailer for the documentary, Batkid Begins. We had a chance to see Batkid Begins earlier this year, and were pretty floored by how uplifting and inspiring the movie turned out to be. Like we said in the title, you have no idea how good this movie will make you feel. From our review: "In an age where news reports thrive on the awful things...

Second 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl' Trailer Offers New Look at One of the Year's Best Movies

Posted: 21 May 2015 02:10 PM PDT

Update 5/21/15: A new trailer for Me and Earl and the Dying Girl has been released and you can find that at the bottom of this post.   The first trailer for Me and Earl and the Dying Girl has arrived online (it hits theaters on June 12), giving us our first look at what's bound to become one of the year's most talked-about movies. Not just because the film -- about the friendship between a boy and his cancer-stricken friend -- has got all the makings of a coming-of-age classic, but also because it's just great. Like, really great. So great it took home two top prizes at this year's Sundance Film Festival, with a grand jury award and an audience award.  Here's what it looks like... And here's a little something we wrote about...
