'The Fifth Element' Director Announces His Next Space Epic

Posted: 12 May 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Fans have been holding out for a sequel to The Fifth Element for nearly twenty years now. Unfortunately, as writer-director Luc Besson's producer (and wife) Virginie Besson-Silla told us last year in an interview, that sequel is highly unlikely to ever happen. But, if what you loved about that sci-fi classic was its far future setting, alien races, interstellar weirdness, and Earth being caught up in a war for the universe, then you'll be happy to hear about Besson's next movie. Besson announced the news on Twitter that he will be directing Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, an adaptation of the French comic series. The name alone already has us imagining the tone of it all, but the comic's plot [via Amazon] is very, very Fifth Element-y: Valerian and...

See All Your Favorite Movies Blend Brilliantly With Animation in This Short Film

Posted: 12 May 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Is too much screen time dangerous for children? Can they wind up confusing reality with the movies and television shows they're regularly watching on devices like smart phones and tablets? That's a debate for others to handle, but that idea is at the center of an incredible animated short by Ornana Films. You may know the studio from their 2014 SXSW Film Festival bumpers. Now it's time to know them better for All Your Favorite Shows. Danny Madden is the man behind the Plympton-like drawings, and the short would be great enough with just the animation stuff. Instead, it's a truly remarkable and brilliantly edited "found imagery" work -- Mari Walker is the editor, by the way -- that compiles clips from tons of movies, most notably The...

Anne Hathaway To Star In A Giant Monster Movie For The Director of 'Timecrimes'

Posted: 12 May 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Eccentric Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo has tackled time travel (Timecrimes), web stalkers (Open Windows), alien invasions (Extraterrestrial), the apocalypse (The ABCs of Death), and alternate reality dopplegangers (V/H/S: Viral), but he's about to put his stamp on some pretty big spectacle and he's bringing with him a pretty big star. The movie is appropriately called Colossal and it will star Anne Hathaway as a young woman who finds herself inexplicably tied to a giant monster attacking Tokyo. In typical Vigalondo fashion, though, things get even weirder: Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly...

Watch: Someone Built the Real-Life Double Decker Couch from 'The Lego Movie'

Posted: 12 May 2015 03:00 PM PDT

There are many moments in The Lego Movie worth watching on repeat as you come to the realization that the song "Everything Is Awesome" will now be stuck in your head indefinitely, but if there's one thing from the mega-popular animated movie that we wish we could yank out and throw in our basement, it's that double-decker couch.   You remember the double-decker couch, right? It began as a bogus idea that, logistically, could never really work, but in the end it helped save the day.   And now it exists for real... kind of.  As part of the online show Super Fan Builds -- where contractors work tirelessly to create epic pop culure-related items for super fans -- one lucky Lego-lovin' family was awarded their very own double-decker...

Here's What a Sequel to 'Minority Report' Looks Like Without Steven Spielberg

Posted: 12 May 2015 01:30 PM PDT

There's a trend these days to turn old movies into TV shows (Bates Motel, Hannibal) or old shows into movies (The A-Team, 21 Jump Street), but rarely do the new versions have anything to do with the originals. That's not going to be the case with Fox' new Minority Report show, which will be a direct sequel to Steven Spielberg's 2002 movie of the same name. Conceived by Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein, the new Minority Report will take place a decade after the first movie ended. PreCrime has been outlawed, which means that the three precogs from the movie are no longer being used to prevent crimes before they happen. It becoming illegal, however, doesn't mean the precogs have stopped receiving visions, and so the show promises to track the life of the...
