Greg Grunberg to Return for 'Heroes Reborn' Posted: NBC seems to be working hard to populate its upcoming "Heroes" reboot, "Heroes Reborn," with plenty of familiar faces from the original series, and that casting pattern continues with the addition of Greg Grunberg to the ensemble. Entertainment Weekly reports that Grunberg, who played telepathic detective Matt Parkman on the original show, is set to reprise his role on "Reborn." According to EW, his involvement is being described as a "guest arc," so it's unclear at this point just how big of a part he will play in the new series (or how many episodes he'll appear in). So far, Grunberg's fellow "Heroes" alums Masi Oka and Jack Coleman have also been tapped to return for "Reborn." They join newbie Zachary Levi ("Chuck"), who's playing an undisclosed role. There's a lot of secrecy surrounding the show right now (check out the series's first, extremely short teaser for proof of that), but it seems that it's shoring up enough of the original cast to interest old fans, while attracting new ones in the process. Consider our curiosity piqued. "Heroes Reborn" will debut sometime this fall on NBC. This 'Mad Max: Fury Road'-'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Mashup Is Perfect, Dammit Posted: As both "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" have proven, females are strong as hell. Now, one enterprising YouTuber has taken that concept to its logical conclusion, and created a mashup of the Netflix series and the action flick. Featuring the auto-tuned "Kimmy" viral video spliced with footage from "Fury Road," the clip works surprisingly well, singing the virtues of the badass women who escaped the clutches of a sadistic madman who kept them trapped for years (a plotline that can apply to both the show and the movie). Kimmy's (Ellie Kemper) story meshes perfectly with that of Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), who similarly breaks free from Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) to become Unbreakable Imperator Furiosa. Sadly, there's no Titus (Tituss Burgess) stand-in for the ladies of "Fury Road" (maybe the next mashup video can feature Tom Hardy's Max belting out a special apocalypse-themed rendition of "Peeno Noir"?), but we think their new theme song is perfect all the same. Check out the awesome clip below, dammit. Photo credit: YouTube This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 35 Best Time Travel Movies Ever, Ranked Posted: "The future isn't what it used to be," Yogi Berra reportedly said. George Clooney expresses a similar sentiment in Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland," the new sci-fi summer blockbuster opening this weekend. The film centers on a teen (Britt Robertson) who travels through time and space to a glittering, futuristic city full of wonder (and jet packs!). It's inspired by the kind of old-fashioned, shiny-surfaced optimism for the future that resulted in such dream utopias as the Disneyland attraction of the title. While "Tomorrowland" isn't a traditional time-travel film, it does take audiences on an inspired trip to the future. In honor of the film's release, we've ranked 35 of Hollywood's best trips through time. Like our picks? Have a few of your own? Sound off below! Maggie Gyllenhaal Was Told She's Too Old to Play a 55-Year-Old's Love Interest Posted: Just a few weeks ago, "Inside Amy Schumer" skewered Hollywood's ridiculous ageism and sexism with a hilarious sketch that explained that there's an age at which actresses are no longer deemed "f--kable." Now, Maggie Gyllenhaal has proven that that notion is, unfortunately, very much a reality. In an interview with TheWrap Magazine about her recent Emmy buzz (and Golden Globe win) for Sundance miniseries "The Honourable Woman," the actress also recalled a depressing turn of events: She was turned down for a role in an upcoming film because she was deemed too old to play a realistic romantic lead -- opposite a 55-year-old man. "There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time," Gyllenhaal told the magazine of the encounter. "I'm 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh." While we're glad Gyllenhaal was eventually able to laugh it off, we're still seething. Since when is 37 considered old? Last we checked, 55 wasn't exactly spring chicken age, either, and yet this leading man (or the writer/director who hired him) thinks he can and should do better? As Seth and Amy would say: REALLY?!? We have no idea what project she was referring to (according to TheWrap, the actress declined to name names), but we applaud her healthy attitude in the face of such stupidity. And despite that sour experience, Gyllenhaal did express optimism for the state of the industry. "A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women," she told the magazine. "I don't feel despairing at all. And I'm more looking with hope for something fascinating." Our fingers are crossed that she finds it. Neville Longbottom Got Ripped (and Made J.K. Rowling Uncomfortable) Posted: Matthew Lewis, the actor behind beloved "Harry Potter" character Neville Longbottom, has made headlines before for how much he's changed since his debut as an awkward preteen in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Now, the British babe is once again making waves with his appearance -- and making author J.K. Rowling uncomfortable in the process. Lewis is the latest cover star for Attitude magazine, and the actor went all-out for the occasion, showing off an impressive set of abs (and making good on the headline, "From Hogwarts to Hottie"). Things got steamier inside the mag, with a photo of Lewis showing off...well, you can imagine (or check out the pic for yourself here). But while many fans swooned over the images, there was one person whose reaction wasn't entirely positive. In a post on Twitter, Rowling compared her response to Lewis's racy photoshoot to her shock in seeing "Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe in the buff in the play "Equus." The photos were "Not as bad" as that experience, "but close," Rowling wrote. An embarrassed Lewis replied to Rowling's comment with a hasty apology (and acknowledgement of the awkwardness), though the author took it in stride. "I will always support you whatever you want to do, Matthew," Rowling responded, before cheekily adding, "Now go put some clothes on." Best "Harry Potter"-themed Twitter interaction ever? We think so. A thousand points to Gryffindor.[via: Attitude, J.K. Rowling, h/t BuzzFeed] Photo credit: Attitude This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
#TBT: 'Full House' Cast Through the Years Posted: If you can believe it, "Full House" ended after eight hug-filled seasons on May 23rd, 1995. You got it, dude -- we said goodbye to Joey's Bullwinkle impressions, Stephanie's dance moves, and Jesse's hair 20 years ago this week. The show's being revived via a Netflix sequel, but until then we have oodles of reruns to get our fix. Plus, the power of the internet hath blessed us with fabulous '80s and '90s photos of the cast. Flip through #TBT pics of the "Full House" family and see how they've changed throughout the years. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The New 'Batkid Begins' Trailer Is Super (and Super Emotional) Posted: The heartwarming story of a young leukemia survivor getting his wish to be Batman for a day is coming to the big screen, and a new trailer for "Batkid Begins" takes a closer look at the planning of the event, as well as the intense, passionate reaction that it elicited across the globe. The documentary focuses on Miles Scott, a then-5-year-old who had just finished treatment for leukemia in the fall of 2013. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Miles requested to become Batman, a challenge that was met with some creative brainstorming, ultimately culminating in the city of San Francisco transforming into Gotham for a day and Miles saving a damsel in distress and fighting off villains, surrounding by thousands of cheering onlookers. It was a feel-good story that resonated with millions, quickly going viral the world over, and eliciting responses from President Barack Obama and Batman actors including Adam West and Ben Affleck, among many others. And while the trailer reveals that there were some bumps in the road -- how do you install a carseat in a Batmobile replica? -- it ultimately aims to explain how and why acts of kindness can unite the globe. "Batkid Begins" itself came together in a similar fashion to Miles's wish, with filmmakers raising money through an Indiegogo campaign to finish the flick. It's now set to make its debut in theaters backed by Warner Bros., the very company behind the blockbuster "Batman" flicks. If that isn't super, we don't know what is. Check out the trailer -- and a poster -- below, and prepare to get emotional. Spoiler alert: this story has a (very) happy ending. "Batkid Begins" is due for a limited release on June 26. Matthew Weiner Explains Using the Coke Ad in 'Mad Men' Finale Posted: Last Sunday's series finale of "Mad Men" set off a firestorm of debate -- did Don create that Coca-Cola ad? What does it mean? Why was it used? -- and creator Matthew Weiner has revealed some answers. Sort of. Weiner spoke at a New York Public Library event, and of course, questions about the finale popped up. "I have never been clear, and I have always been able to live with ambiguities," he explained of the elliptical ending. But he did make clear that Don created that ad. Here's an overview of what else he said: The ad is not meant to be cynical -- rather the opposite: "I did hear rumblings of people talking about the ad being corny. It's a little bit disturbing to me, that cynicism. I'm not saying advertising's not corny, but I'm saying that the people who find that ad corny, they're probably experiencing a lot of life that way, and they're missing out on something. Five years before that, black people and white people couldn't even be in an ad together! And the idea that someone in an enlightened state might have created something that's very pure - yeah, there's soda in there with a good feeling, but that ad to me is the best ad ever made, and it comes from a very good place." The hug with Leonard is a breakthrough emotional moment: Weiner noted that, in those days, men didn't express their emotions "other than in bar fights." Like many veterans after the war, "Don is just ignoring this stuff, and it keeps bubbling up. And a lot of his, what we would now call self-medication, drunkenness, whatever, womanizing, is to avoid those feelings." So, Don hugging a stranger and crying with him indicates a major turning point. "I hope the audience would feel either that he was embracing a part of himself, or maybe them, and that they were heard. I don't want to put it into words more than that." Betty's fate was written long ago: "I knew very early on. Her mother had just died in the pilot, and I knew this woman wasn't going to live long, and we love the idea of her realizing her purpose in life right when she ran out of time." But not Peggy's: "I didn't know Peggy and Stan would end up together -- that had to be proved to me." The phone was a character unto itself: Some of us felt a little cheated not to see Don interact on screen with Peggy, Betty, or Sally, but Weiner wanted those conservations to happen over the phone. "A lot of the most important things in my life have happened to me over the phone. It's a dramatic situation almost every time when you answer the phone -- if you answer the phone." Best of Late Night TV: David Letterman's Final Show, Justin Bieber Carpool Karaoke Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. This is it. The end of an era. Wednesday, May 20 was all about David Letterman's retirement from late night TV after 33 years, and his final night as host of "The Late Show." Stephen Colbert will take over "Late Show" on September 8. You should head to TheLateShow on YouTube to catch up on all the videos posted from the past few weeks, but here are the main segments from last night -- if nothing else, you should watch the epic star-studded Top 10 list. Here's Dave's final show entrance, with the crowd standing to cheer: Dave's final monologue started after he forced the audience to calm down and stop chanting for him. He said they stood so long they didn't have time for the "gifts to the audience" segment. He also revealed the bad news: "I'll be honest with you, it's beginning to look like I'm not gonna get 'The Tonight Show.'" Haha. Also, he's sick of being asked what he's going to do when he's retired, but he took a moment to reveal (joking, of course) his plans: There had to be a last Top 10 list, so here's "Top Ten Things I've Always Wanted to Say To Dave," with each one read by a different celebrity: Alec Baldwin, Barbara Walters, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Peyton Manning, Tina Fey, and Bill Murray back with No. 1: There was a video with U.S. Presidents noting that "Our Long National Nightmare Is Over" ... capped by President Obama and Dave: Here's "The Best of David Letterman and Kids": Dave very briefly wished good luck to Stephen Colbert -- who must know he has big shoes to fill. Foo Fighters performed "Everlong," accompanied by highlights from Dave's 33-year late night career: And here's Dave's final thank you and good night, after 6,000 shows, asking people to save some of this merited or unmerited praise for his funeral: Other stuff happened on late night TV beyond Letterman's final show. In case you didn't see it before, here's Seth Meyers recreating Letterman's "Late Night" opening from 1982: Patton Oswalt was on "Conan" and he and Conan O'Brien talked about being inspired by David Letterman. There were a lot of "Star Wars" comparisons. When it came time for "Conan" to hit the same timeframe as "Late Show," Conan O'Brien told everyone to record "Conan" but change the channel to watch "The Late Show." Very cute. Respect. Over on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," James had his own Top 10 list, called "The Top 10 Things We Will Miss About David Letterman": James closed his episode with a classic Letterman move - dropping watermelons off the CBS roof: Halle Berry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were both on "The Late Late Show" and they too talked about Letterman: Also, here's another round of James' Carpool Karaoke -- this time with Justin Bieber and James singing "Baby." Over on "The Tonight Show," Jeff Foxworthy hosted a special edition of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" with Pitbull and Jimmy Fallon. David Duchovny was also on Fallon's show and revealed he was "The Head Boy" in high school. Dwyane Wade was on Seth's show and talked about being a Groomzilla. Kellan Lutz was also on Seth's show and talked about being an inventor with his fifth patent: Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
