Posted: There's a scene in Tangerine where a tattooed drug dealer named Chester distances himself from an argument between three prostitutes claiming, “This is a girl thing.” Chester has a point. Director Sean Baker makes it clear from the beginning that this is a film about women. We meet Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) a transgender prostitute who’s been informed by her best friend Alexandra (Mya Taylor) that her boyfriend has been sleeping with a “white fish” (that’s a female-born Caucasian). Their story intersects with Razmik (Karren Karagulian) an Armenian cab driver with a crush on Sin-Dee. As she hunts Los Angeles for her boyfriend Chester (James Ransone) she comes face-to-face with the other woman. Expect bitch-slapping and hair pulling. While the film focuses on girl power, it also shows a side of L.A. that’s rarely captured on the big screen, a low-rent city of fast food restaurants and cheap laundrettes.
