Chris Rock May Host the Oscars: Report Posted: The 2016 Oscars may have already secured a host, if a new report is to be believed. According to Robot Butt (yes, that's a real website), Chris Rock has been tapped as the next host of the Academy Awards. The site writes that a formal announcement from the Academy is expected any day now; Variety later confirmed that Rock is indeed in talks for the role, though an Academy spokesperson declined to comment. If true, this would be the second time Rock has hosted, after he helmed the ceremony back in 2005. Initially, new Oscars producers Reginald Hudlin and David Hill had said that they wanted to try a multi-host format, similar to recent telecasts with two hosts (2010's pairing of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, and the much-maligned duo of Anne Hathaway and James Franco the following year). But it now appears that plan has been scrapped entirely (thankfully). Robot Butt says (there's a sentence we never thought we'd type) that Rock beat out other contenders including Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, and Amy Schumer. Schumer reportedly was offered, and turned down, the gig. Rock seems like a good choice for the job, and as Variety reminds us, he was behind one of the weirder (and funnier) moments in recent Academy Awards history: after joking about Jude Law appearing in so many movies that year, he was chided onstage by a sourpuss Sean Penn. Here's hoping there are plenty more oddities like that on deck if Rock indeed gets the gig. The Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, February 28, 2016 on ABC. Lauren Graham Responds to the 'Gilmore Girls' Netflix News Posted: There's been no official word yet from Netflix or any of the creatives involved, but that still hasn't stopped us from getting positively giddy over the news that the streaming service may be reviving "Gilmore Girls" for a limited series run. Now, one of the titular stars has responded to the squeal-inducing news. In a tweet sent out on Monday evening shortly after the news broke, Lauren Graham attempted to calm her frenzied followers -- but also stoked the flames a bit, too. "DUDES. I can't confirm this," Graham wrote, sharing a link to one of the original reports. "But I also can't deny this..." she added. (She also retweeted a post from onetime "GG" guest star Madeleine Albright, who tweeted, "I hope the rumors are true!") That ellipses is pretty telling, since it clearly indicates that the actress has more she wants to say, but probably can't just yet. After all, multiple sites reported that there are no current deals in place with any of the original cast members (though talks are ongoing, reportedly), and the show can't possibly move forward without at least both Graham and Alexis Bledel attached. So Graham is probably trying to temper excitement for now, until everyone important (or available, anyway -- they probably won't be able to wrangle Melissa McCarthy) has signed on the dotted line, and the revival is officially greenlit. It also indicates that Scott Patterson was right all along when he inadvertently spilled the beans back in May that something "Gilmore"-related was in the works. It's likely that if Patterson knew way back then, Graham did, too -- she was just waiting to say anything publicly until all the pieces were in place. Regardless of who knew what when, we're just glad that this really, truly appears to be happening. Keep your fingers and toes crossed, fellow fans. Everyone Is Buying 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Tickets, Crashing Websites Posted: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is aiming for a huge opening weekend when it debuts on December 18, and the flick is already the hottest ticket in town, breaking online sales records and crashing a few websites along the way. After the latest "Force Awakens" trailer dropped on Monday night, sites like Fandango and Movie Tickets reported heavy traffic and lots of problems. According to The Hollywood Reporter, some Fandango users were met with a "site maintenance" message, while Movie Tickets customers were told, "Web server is returning an unknown error." In a statement on Tuesday, Fandango said those issues were due to "unprecedented ticket demand," and reported that "The Force Awakens" completely shattered its first-day showings sales record, selling eight times as many tickets as previous champ "The Hunger Games." The Wall Street Journal reported even more jaw-dropping numbers: The U.K., which opened up advance ticket sales a day earlier than the U.S., is also reporting ridiculous demand -- and plenty of crashed ticketing websites -- for "The Force Awakens." The word "unprecedented" was also thrown around across the pond. And that word is an important one for box office watchers: If demand is, indeed, so unprecedented right now, that can only mean that it will continue to grow as "The Force Awakens"'s release date approaches. Could it outpace current domestic and international opening weekend champ, "Jurassic World," which raked in $209 million and $511 million, respectively, when it bowed back in June? It's looking pretty likely right now. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on December 18. You may want to get your tickets now, before any more websites crash. Is 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' a Halloween Movie or a Christmas Movie? Posted: It's a debate that's raged ever since the flick's debut in 1993: Is "The Nightmare Before Christmas" a Halloween movie, or a Christmas movie? Fans have their own reasoning for picking a particular side, but now, the film's director, Henry Selick, has weighed in with the definitive answer. In an Q&A session following a "Nightmare" screening at the Telluride Horror Show last weekend, Selick was asked directly by a little girl in the crowd, "Is this a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie?" After a pause, the director revealed that he came down decidedly on Team Halloween. Birth.Movies.Death. reports: Some fans will argue that the flick's focus the December holiday puts it more in the Christmas camp, but the Tim Burton-produced film doesn't exactly put us in the holiday mood -- it's creepy as hell, and that, if anything, should sway viewers into agreeing with Selick. Regardless of where you fall in the divide, though, feel free to fire up your DVD -- or Netflix -- of the film at whatever time of year you feel is appropriate. We won't tell. Watch Daisy Ridley & John Boyega React to the 'Force Awakens' Trailer Posted: Unless you've been living under a rock (or perhaps in a galaxy far, far away), you know that the newest trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiered last night, to near-universal acclaim. Two specific people who were watching along -- and enjoying every second of it -- were none other than stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, and the actors have shared their smile-inducing and heart-warming reactions to the clip. "Totally emotional seeing it for the first time and so so so incredibly awed to be part of this incredible legacy," Ridley wrote. "THE TRAILER IS JUST EEEEPPPPPPPIIIIICCCCCCC!" Boyega wrote. "Star Wars is back!" We concur. Is it December 18 yet? [via: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega] Photo credit: Getty Images for Disney This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

12 Classic Movies You Say You'll Watch (But Never Do) Posted: It's embarrassing, but true: You've never seen "Gone With the Wind." Or (gasp!) "The Godfather." You've always meant to. You may have even rented it or recorded it and then... just never actually watched it. Your friends can't believe it! [Insert unwatched classic movie title here] is such a classic. But you have your reasons. Maybe it's because that movie is more than three hours long, or there's a star in it you just can't stand. Or there are just too many new movies and TV shows to watch and you can't even keep up with those. Here are some of the famous classics that -- if you haven't seen them by now -- you might as well admit you'll never actually watch. 13 Really Crappy Horror Movies Set in Space, Ranked From Bad to Worst Posted: Got a long-lasting horror series running low on ideas and money? No problem -- set it in space! That is a popular cure-all Hollywood applies to slasher film franchises -- it's easier to make bad sci-fi horror than the other thing. Worse? Some movies set in galaxies far, far away start out as bargain bin worthy from jump street -- original efforts that seem to over-commit to being full of wrong. With Halloween creeping around the corner (see what we did thar?), here are 13 space-set horror films you want to shove out an airlock. Netflix Reviving 'Gilmore Girls' for Limited Series Posted: "The Gilmore Girls" are back! To much glee on Twitter, multiple outlets confirmed with sources that Netflix is reviving the beloved WB/CW dramedy for a four-episode limited series. It would be written by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who left the series prior to the final season. The episodes would be 90 minutes each, functioning more as mini-movies; "Gilmore Girls" is reportedly a top performer for Netflix. Stars Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson, and Kelly Bishop are all in talks to reprise their roles. "Gilmore Girls" ran for seven seasons, from 2000-2007, originally on the WB and then on the CW. It quickly became beloved by fans for its quirky sense of humor, loving relationship between single mother Lorelai (Graham) and daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), and the whip-smart, pop culture-referencing dialogue. While the key stars are all likely to return for the revival, other actors like Melissa McCarthy (who played chef Sookie St. James) are big question marks. Also, Edward Hermann (Richard Gilmore) passed away last year, and his absence will undoubtedly be noted on the new episodes. Sherman-Palladino has spoken about the possibility of a reunion before. Just at this year's ATX TV Festival in Austin, she said, "It would have to be the right everything - the right format, the right timing. If it ever happened, I promise we'll do it correctly." Guess Netflix is doing it correctly! Now, Sherman-Palladino - who left over a contract dispute - will get to complete the series her way ... including the mysterious final four words she always intended "Gilmore Girls" to end with. 12 Times Judge Judy Was the Spiciest Judge on TV Posted: Judge Judy is like the sassy mom you never had. She's full of one-liners masquerading as advice, biting critiques, and tough love. Sure, the small-claims cases on her show are mildly interesting, but what keeps us tuning in are the no-nonsense gems delivered in a way only Judge Judy can: extra spicy with a side of harsh truth. Here are 11 times Judge Judy stopped being polite, and started getting real. (JK she's never polite! That's why we love her.) This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. If the whole "late night show host" thing doesn't work out, Jimmy Kimmel might have a future in ballet. The comedian partook in a dance lesson from Misty Copeland, and took the entire thing very seriously. By which we mean he wore a pink leotard and a tutu / attempted to dance "Swan Lake." (Note: It was a failure on all counts.) Jimmy performed in Brooklyn last night, and Ryan Adams welcomed him in true NYC style...by singing a cover of Taylor Swift's "Welcome to New York." No offense to Taylor, but this might be better than the OG. So, Bill Murray showed up on Kimmel, and not only was he in costume with full face paint, he admitted that he's never watched anything on Netflix. To quote: "I've never seen Netflix in my life, I have no idea how to get it." Slightly ironic considering that he has an Xmas special coming up, right? Watch the Final 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer Posted: It's here! Disney just released a dramatic two-and-a-half-minute trailer for "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens" on October 19, during ESPN's "Monday Night Football." The footage starts with the question, "Who are you?" and the answer, "I'm no one." It's not Arya Stark, but it sounds like it's Rey (Daisy Ridley), who is heavily featured, along with Finn (John Boyega), an angst-ridden Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford).Rey: "There were stories about what happened." Han: "It's true. All of it." Yes, they made several movies. We also hear a voice (Kylo Ren?) say, "Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started." What Darth Vader started?Solo's voice mentions "The Dark Side, the Jedi, they're real." The Force is all into us, we just have to let it in. There's a ton of action, Finn appearing to take on Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in the dark forest, and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) crying ... over whom/what? Is Luke (Mark Hamill) gone? He's nowhere to be found in the rest of the trailer. Check it out and see what you think:J.J. Abrams's "The Force Awakens" will be released December 18, 2015. Tickets are now on sale everywhere, including right here on Moviefone.com. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
