The Last Sci-Fi Blog: The Best, Worst, and Weirdest 'Star Wars' Trailers Posted: 22 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT You've seen the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, right? Of course you have. You've probably watched it about ten times. Go ahead and watch it again. We'll wait. It's pretty good, right? Like any movie series that's persisted for 40 years and produced seven movies, there are countless trailers attached to the Star Wars saga. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are weird. One of them features Harrison Ford providing a voice over narration. One of them doesn't have John William's music. More than a few of them make bad movies look like good movies. So let's take a quick jaunt through the world of Star Wars trailers and hand out awards and labels. Let's pay the quickest of visits to Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the... See the Movies Nominated For the First Big Awards of the Season Posted: 22 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT Awards season is officially upon us, marked by the announcement of the nominees for the 25th Annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards. The IFP prides itself on holding the first major film honors of the year and being the first stop on the road to the Oscars, and because they're held so early they can have an influence on everything that comes after. The Gotham nominations give us the initial look at what movies and performances are actually in contention for being named the best of 2015. Here's a simple guide to what's up for what and where and when you can see them for yourself: Best Feature Carol Directed by Todd Haynes Produced by Elizabeth Karlsen, Tessa Ross, Christine Vachon and Stephen Woolley Distributed by The Weinstein Company Festival win: Queer... This New 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' Trailer Was Born to Be Wild Posted: 22 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT The new trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is here. Check it out below. First published in 2009, Seth Grahame-Smith's book became an unexpected bestseller, thanks in part to the novelty of introducing the undead into the world created by Jane Austen. The writer followed that up with his novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was made into a broadly comic, self-consciously silly blockbuster in 2012 by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted). As in Austen's classic book, the movie will revolve around Elizabeth Bennett (Lily James, Cinderella) and her husband-hunting sisters (Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, Bella Heathcote and Suki Waterhouse), as well as the romance between our heroine and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley). The key difference, added by Grahame-Smith, is... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: When All the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailers Are Cut Together, We Get This Posted: 22 Oct 2015 06:21 PM PDT One of the best things about these three Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers is that when they show a scene again, they do so from a different angle. Many trailers are repetitive these days, zeroing in on a few big moments and then using them in every trailer. They're doing that for The Force Awakens, but they're showing you different sides of these same moments, revealing more about the movie without really showing us more of the movie. What's also great about this tactic is that the trailers don't feel repetitive even though they kind of are -- and when you patch them all together into one giant supercut, you're able to extend scenes we've only seen bits and pieces of for a more well-rounded Star Wars-watchin' experience. Check it out... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'The World of Kanako' Teaser Blends Japanese Pop, Violence, and Drugs Into a Burst of Energy Posted: 22 Oct 2015 04:30 PM PDT Watching this fantastic teaser trailer for The World of Kanako will tell you absolutely nothing about the plot of the movie. That doesn't really matter, though. It's got so much energy and chaos and personality that it's still going to land on your must-see radar. This is of course assuming you're a fan of eccentric Japanese movies that aren't afraid to get strange and bloody and yet still funny. That's a mix of things that is understandably not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like movies along the lines of Cold Prey, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Battle Royale, and Suicide Club, you're going to want to press play on this NSFW trailer. And if you do need context for the wild imagery, here's the official synopsis: "The World of... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: 'Back to the Future''s Marty and Doc Reunite in a Hilariously Alternate 2015 Posted: 22 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT Amidst the influx of celebratory stories on "Back to the Future Day" -- made even more special by the fact that October 21, 2015 was the actual future date Marty, Doc and Jennifer travel to in Back to the Future II -- Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reprised their roles as Marty and Doc respectively for a hilarious segment on Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show. Not only were they dressed in the same outfits they wore in the original Back to the Future, but they remained in full character playing the duo as they arrive in an alternate 2015 that looks nothing like the one from Back to the Future II. Smartphone and Donald Trump jokes ensue. Check it out below. This may be the closest we ever get to a Back to the Future sequel featuring the original Marty and... New 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' Images Reveal a Duel Between Two Heroes Posted: 22 Oct 2015 01:30 PM PDT New photos from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suggest the broad scope of the movie, as well as the complicated mechanics of the production. First up is an image showing the Man of Steel (Henry Cavill) making his way through a large crowd, a number of whom are wearing masks. Is a holiday being celebrated? Or is a memorial being commemorated? The photo above is a still taken from a scene that appeared briefly in the first trailer. The people appear to be treating Superman as a god, which is one of the key issues of the movie: Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is motivated to take vigilante action as Batman because of his concern that Superman has too much unchecked power. “You kind of have to understand both of their point of views,” director Zack Snyder... Posted: 22 Oct 2015 12:15 PM PDT Ant-Man and the Wasp: Peyton Reed, who directed Ant-Man to great success earlier this year, is in negotiations to helm the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Paul Rudd will return as the tiny superhero. The original earned more than $454 million at the box office worldwide; the sequel has already been scheduled for release on July 6, 2018. [Heat Vision] Cruel Intentions: Early in her career, Reese Witherspoon starred in Cruel Intentions (1999, above), a sexy high school drama inspired by the 18th century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The movie made more than $75 million worldwide at the box office and inspired two followup editions; the first, a prequel, was compiled from three episodes of a television spinoff titled Manchester Prep and featured Amy Adams. Now a... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
