CBS's 'Supergirl' Is the Super-Powered Show We've Been Waiting For

Posted:

Melissa Benoist as Kara in CBS's A new hero debuted on CBS Thursday night. A hero who has extraordinary, Earth-saving abilities. A hero with a unique perspective on what it means to have superpowers. A female superhero. "Supergirl" to be exact.

The one-hour pilot, starring Melissa Benoist from "Glee," did not disappoint. The excitement and badass charm displayed by Benoist as Kara Zor-El, cousin of Clark Kent (aka Superman), is infectious.

Just like her cousin -- who I truly am trying to avoid bringing up in comparison -- she hides her abilities as an assistant to media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart). But once she feels the adrenalin of having saved a plane that carried her foster sister Alex (Chyler Leigh), she knows it's time to be more than just an assistant.

So that's what she does. She goes up, up, and away to save National City from Vartox, the first criminal alien of many to come from the crashed Phantom Zone prison, Fort Rozz. She struggles in all aspects, emotionally and physically, but rebounds with the guidance of her sister, Alex.

The ending did have an unexpected twist. Be warned: SPOILERS BELOW.

The big-bad villain is her mother's twin sister, Astra (Laura Benanti).

The premiere of "Supergirl" is a huge step forward; it's a television show centered on a powerful female superhero airing in primetime on a broadcast network. And the show's creators didn't go for subtlety in showing that women can handle their own. At the start of the episode, we see shy Kara apologize to a guy she accidentally bumps into, and, by the end of the hour, she's towering over the villain she's just stopped from destroying National City. Throughout the ups and downs of the premiere, Kara is portrayed as fully dimensional, expressing her emotions and fighting the tough fight.

At one point during Kara's battle with Vartox, while the Department of Extranormal Operations watches the action go down from the safety headquarters, Alex and Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) engage in a telling exchange:

Hank: "She's not strong enough."

Alex: "Why, because she's a girl? That's exactly what we were counting on."

Boom. The whole show in one sentence.

"Supergirl" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on CBS.

'Walking Dead' Showrunner Scott Gimple Promises Answers About (SPOILER)

Posted:

It's been a tense couple of days for fans of "The Walking Dead," as they try to figure out just what on earth happened during Sunday night's episode, and what it means for a certain beloved original character. But according to showrunner Scott M. Gimple, fans should know that answers are indeed on their way.

The events that unfolded during the episode, "Thank You," seemed, at first, pretty straightforward: Glenn and Nicholas found themselves trapped on top of a dumpster, surrounded by walkers; Nicholas panicked and shot himself in the head, taking Glenn down with him as his body fell; Glenn was eaten alive by the hungry horde. But an ambiguous statement from Gimple that was read on fan show "Talking Dead" immediately after the episode aired called that sequence of events into question, with a cryptic promise that fans "will see Glenn, some version of Glenn, or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story, to help complete the story."

Naturally, this confused a lot of people (this recapper included), and led to wide speculation about Glenn's true fate -- and how fair it was for producers to toy with fans about it, especially if the "death" was a fakeout. Now, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gimple has attempted to clear the air, explaining that he released that statement in part to help mitigate confusion (um, good try?), and said that he feared that "silence, for some reason, might be looked upon as saying something unto itself."

Gimple also blamed our culture's need for immediate answers and overly-detailed discussion for people's upset reactions to Sunday's episode, comparing it to stopping a movie between reels to ask the audience questions before continuing the film.

"It is this big movie, it's this whole piece," he said of "The Walking Dead"'s current season. " ... We give people something to look forward to every week, and in the meantime I have to worry about people freaking out about the twists and turns of stories."

I'd argue that it was Gimple himself who stoked a lot of the outrage fire with that ridiculous "Talking Dead" statement, since many fans (again, myself included) already had their own interpretation of the episode, and his comment only muddled things further. But regardless of how you feel about it, Gimple said that all would soon be revealed -- fans just have to be patient.

"I would just encourage people to watch the entire thing because all of their questions will be answered," Gimple told the Times. "It's absolutely cool that they're reacting any way at this point, but there are a whole lot more chapters, a whole lot more reels in the movie to watch to get the whole picture."

Elizabeth Banks Will Return to Direct 'Pitch Perfect 3'

Posted:

'A Bigger Splash' Premiere - 72nd Venice Film FestivalToday in aca-awesome news, Elizabeth Banks is reportedly set to return to direct "Pitch Perfect 3."

According to Variety, Banks will follow-up her directorial debut -- the massively popular "Pitch Perfect 2" -- by helming the next installment in the collegiate a cappella series. It had previously been unclear if she would be back, Variety says, because Banks "was weighing other projects to direct and hadn't committed to return."

But it looks like everything is squared away now, and the actress-director will indeed be on board for the threequel. Original "Pitch Perfect" writer Kay Cannon will be back again for the next flick, too.

And that's not all: All of the major leads have signed on to return as well, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow. With those big names on board, we expect more of the other Bellas to join the ensemble, too.

"Pitch Perfect 2" defied expectations when it earned a whopping $286 million at the international box office, more than doubling the 2012 original's haul of $113 million. We can only imagine how successful another round will be.

"Pitch Perfect 3" is due in theaters on August 4, 2017.

Kim Kardashian Had a 'Troop Beverly Hills'-Themed Baby Shower

Posted:

kim kardashian, baby shower, troop beverly hillsKim Kardashian may be a selfie-loving celeb with her own reality show, but at heart, she's just like the rest of us: she loves campy '80s comedies, too. Kardashian proved that this weekend when she attended a "Troop Beverly Hills"-themed baby shower thrown in her honor.

The event, celebrating baby number two for Kardashian and husband Kanye West, was attended by all of Kardashian's sisters, along with Caitlyn Jenner and celeb pals including Gigi Hadid, Serena Williams, and Cara Delevingne, according to E! News. But the real star of the party was the amazing choice in theme, inspired by the 1989 Shelley Long-Jenny Lewis comedy (oddly, E! doesn't mention "Troop" by name, instead referring to the gathering simply as "camp-themed").

Guests (including the adorable North West) donned matching striped pajamas and sat in teepees adorned with the Wilderness Girls's troop number. They also sipped from monogrammed mugs and munched on Girl Scout cookies (sadly, no Wilderness Girls cookies were available).

Kardashian and her sisters shared a bunch of snaps from the event on Instagram (unfortunately for fellow "TBH" fans, neither Lewis nor Long were present), and we've embedded some of our favorites here. We may not always love everything Kim does, but this officially earns our seal of approval. Check out the fun for yourself below.

'Flash' EP and Danielle Panabaker Talk Firestorm 2.0, Killer Frost, and More

Posted:

the flash season 2 firestorm previewIf you've seen trailers for Tuesday's all new episode of The CW's "The Flash," then you already know the flame-spewing superhero Firestorm is getting a sizzling makeover.

When Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) falls ill, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his S.T.A.R. Labs scientists must find a replacement for his metahuman partner Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), who died last season saving the city.

After a screening of the flame-filled, emotionally charged episode -- titled "The Fury of Firestorm" -- Moviefone spoke to "Flash" co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg and star Danielle Panabaker, who plays Dr. Caitlin Snow, Ronnie's crestfallen widow. The two of discussed the new-look Firestorm and also teased several big moments from later on in the season, including the emergence of Killer Frost, the upcoming "Arrow" crossover, and the return of everyone's favorite villain -- Grodd.

1. Firestorm 2.0 Will Be Hilarious
When Ronnie died saving Central City, he left behind a grieving bride in Snow and an incomplete superhero in Dr. Stein. This week, Stein's needs are more pressing as his health fails him and we learn he must "merge" with another metahuman to survive. Flash and friends sift through several candidates to replace Ronnie, including an ambitious scientist Henry Hewitt (Demore Barnes) and a former athlete Jefferson "Jax" Jackson (Franz Drameh).

Mild spoiler alert that has already been widely reported: Jax will win the job.

Dr. Stein and Jax have zero in common, but as Kreisberg explains, that's by design. Juxtaposing the "radically different" characters "leaves more room for comedy with the Firestorm character," he said. Now we can look forward to more quip-based humor from Firestorm, especially after the character migrates over to The CW's upcoming spinoff "DC's Legends of Tomorrow."

2. What Does Ronnie Getting Replaced Mean for Caitlin?
Dr. Snow is a focal point of Tuesday's episode because the search for a new Firestorm is essentially a quest to close the book on Ronnie. As sad as that sounds, Panabaker believes it could be an important step forward for her character.

"What's especially hard for Caitlin, and maybe ultimately cathartic about this experience, is that she's connected to Stein and she cares deeply about him because he is her last connection to Ronnie," she explained. "So she's particularly invested in taking care of Stein... and making sure his next partner is... just as good if not better than Ronnie."

"This was really the episode where [Caitlin] kind of dealt with [Ronnie's death]. She can grieve through wanting to protect her dead husband's co-superhero," Kreisberg added. "This episode makes me cry."

3. Does This Have Anything to Do With Her Killer Frost Transition?
Panabaker owned the Internet last week after The CW revealed the first image of her playing the villain Killer Frost. But clearly something has to happen for Dr. Snow to become a cold-hearted baddie, because right now she's one of "The Flash's" warmest characters (all puns intended).

So, will she suffer another tragedy? Is Killer Frost actually Caitlin Snow's doppelganger from the alternate universe that has come into play this season? Universe? Or is there some other explanation? Kreisberg wouldn't say for certain, but he did imply that he and co-showrunner Greg Berlanti has been laying a foundation for Killer Frost's arc for quite some time:

"We knew we [the show was] going to be on for a few years, [so] we were able to play the slow con on some of these things," Kreisberg said. "It's only in hindsight that you look back and go, 'Oh, that thing in episode whatever from early Season 2, that tied into the thing that led into the other thing."

Hmmm. Mystery still unsolved.

4. Dr. Stein Gets a Weird 'Vibe' From Cisco
Last season Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdez) was revealed to be Vibe, a metahuman who sees visions of alternate universes. He has been trying to hide his powers from Barry and Dr. Snow, but on Tuesday's episode Dr. Stein discovers his big secret and advises Cisco to share it with the group. But will he listen?

"[Cisco] has seen what happens to the other metahumans," Kreisberg said. "Good or bad intentions, they all go nuts and get locked up. So Cisco is really scared."

Furthermore, Cisco must deal with his disappointment over the nature of his vague powers: "It's not like he woke up and can fly," Kreisberg said. "So he feels like he drew the short straw. 'Barry gets super-speed, Ronnie gets to fly, and I get these blinding headache and nightmare visions of people being killed?' It's not, at first blush, the most heroic way to step into the world."

5. Looking Ahead... Is Jaytlin Really a Thing?
Dr. Snow's heart was broken after Ronnie sacrificed himself at the end of last season, but over six months have passed since his heroic death and already we're seeing signs that she may soon be ready to move on. We've seen sparks between her and newcomer/alternate universe Flash Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) - could there be a legitimate romance in their future? All signs point to yes.

"Obviously there's something going on there," Kreisberg said.

Panabaker is shipping Jaytlin, too: "He's a fellow science nerd. What could be better for Caitlin?"

6. The Mother of All 'Arrow'/'Flash' Crossovers Is Coming
When "Arrow" and "The Flash" crossover this winter, they won't just be trading characters for a week, they'll be setting the stage for "Legends of Tomorrow."

Panabaker revealed that, because of the new show, this season's crossover episodes would be "exponentially bigger." Kreisberg agreed: "We looked back and thought those 'Flash'/'Arrow' episodes were the biggest things we'd ever done, but now we have more heroes, more villains, more mouths to feed - it's really exciting."

It won't just be the character pool that changes, either -- fans can also expect a shift in tone. "The 'Flash' episode plays more like an episode of 'Arrow,' and the 'Arrow' episode plays more like an episode of 'Flash,'" Kreisberg added.

7. Grodd's Return: Caitlin Will Be His Fay Wray
Gorilla Grodd, a fan favorite villain from "The Flash's" freshman season, is coming back this year in a big way. According to Kreisberg and Panabaker, the telepathic primate's return may inspire comparisons to the 1933 film "King Kong".

"Caitlin plays ['King Kong' starlet] Fay Wray to Grodd's Kong," he explained.

"[Grodd] has some unfinished business with her," Panabaker added.

8. The Big Regret Form Season One
"The Flash" scored big with both audiences and critics last season, but Kreisberg admitted there's still one thing he wishes he could go back and change: "The one thing we didn't do last year on ' The Flash,' and I keep kicking myself for it, is when Oliver got exposed as the Arrow. There was no mention of Flash for all those episodes about everything Oliver Queen was going through," he said. "For me, it's like they're all friends, they all know each other's secret identities, and they all care for each other - you'd think somebody would've said something about it."

However, this season the writers have been more vigilant about "honoring the fact that they're all in each other's life." "That's why we acknowledged Oliver's change into Green Arrow on 'The Flash,'" he said.

9. Batman Who?
Green Arrow and the Flash are a part of the Justice League, a crime-fighting super group that includes Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. DC Comics fans are naturally fond of speculating when and where those other big named heroes might rear their heads, but Kreisberg says the writers aren't focused on shoehorning them into their shows.

"We've gotten to do Green Arrow, Ra's al Ghul, the League of Assassins, Deathstroke, Flash, Killer Frost, and Vibe; now we're doing 'Legends' and Rip Hunter; we have Constantine coming on to 'Arrow'; and we have 'Supergirl.'" he said with a laugh. "So it's not like we're sitting there saying, 'God dammit, why won't they give us Batman?'"

In fact, he said the writers prefer developing lesser-known characters: "It's a lot more fun to show people that [viewers] haven't constantly seen."

"The Flash" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

There's a Reason the 'Gilmore Girls' Revival Is 4 Episodes

Posted:

Gilmore Girls (WB) Season 1, 2000-2001Episode: Love and War and Snow Airdate: December 14, 2000Shown from left: Alexis Bledel (as Rory Gilmore), Lauren Graham (as Lorelai Gilmore)It's been just over a week since news broke that Netflix was eyeing a "Gilmore Girls" revival, and now, there's word that the limited series may feature a cool narrative twist.

TVLine reports that the entire season will take place over the course of one calendar year, with each of the four 90-minute mini-movies/episodes devoted to events that take place in one of the four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. If that wasn't intriguing enough, there's also more good news happening behind the scenes, according to TVLine:

AS-P ["GG" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino] and exec producer Daniel Palladino (AKA Team Palladino) will write and direct the entire revival, which will be set in the present day (or roughly eight years after the series ended). Negotiations with the show's primary cast - Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson - are said to be underway.

We like that they're not going to pretend that the entire cast hasn't aged almost a decade, and deal with life in the present. And one present-day moment the series clearly needs to address is the loss of beloved Grandpa Gilmore, to mark actor Edward Herrmann's real-life death in 2014. We have plenty more ideas where that came from, and we're excited to see what the Palladinos have in store. We're also excited that Lauren Graham's non-denial of the news appears accurate.

As for the season conceit, it definitely makes sense, considering how important winter/snow is to Lorelai (Graham) in particular. We'd love to see the series end with winter to reflect that significance. Maybe this revival will conclude with someone's wedding in a snow-covered Stars Hallow? We can't wait to find out.

Now if only we could somehow find a way to convince Mother Nature to cook up a bunch of new, different seasons so this revival could be longer...

Adam Sandler Goes Outlaw in 'Ridiculous 6' Trailer

Posted:

Ridiculous 6Adam Sandler is hoping to find a little more luck on Netflix than he has lately at the box office.

The actor signed a four-movie deal with the streaming service, and the first, "Ridiculous 6," now has a trailer. Sandler stars as Tommy "White Knife" Stockburn, an outlaw who terrorizes the West with a gang made up of his improbable brothers (including Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, and Rob Schneider). They have to set aside their usual bank-robbing and pillaging to rescue their father (Nick Nolte).
"Ridiculous 6" is meant to be a comedic parody of "The Magnificent Seven. The movie generated some controversy when Native American actors walked off the set, complaining about mistreatment and racially insensitive dialogue. The trailer, at least, wisely leaves out any jokes of that nature. In fact, there are not many jokes at all, other than Schneider bumbling around and the idea that one man could father such different-looking sons.

"Ridiculous 6" will be available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 11.

A 'Toy Story 3' Superfan Made a Real-Life Replica of Andy's Room and It's Glorious

Posted:

Thanks to one "Toy Story 3" superfan, the internet has now become an even better place.

There's a Tumblr devoted to die-hard fans of the Pixar sequel (who knew?!), and one of those fans has re-created Andy's Room in real-life. *Gives all the high-fives.

The Pixarist writes that it took "about two years of work" to complete, and the end result is crazy detail-oriented. Highlights of the room include the recreation of the white board in Andy's room (pictured), and the dartboard hanging on the back of Andy's door -- which The Pixarist found at thrift shop for $5.
Andy's wall posters were also recreated from scratch, with the help of The Pixarist's brother.

"It may sound a bit obsessive," The Pixarist writes, "but we tried incredibly hard to make sure that every little detail was captured ... It's the room that most of us grew up wishing we had."

If you want to see more pics, definitely head over to our new favorite Tumblr page.

'Supergirl' Premieres to Super Ratings; Plus, Watch the Full Season Trailer

Posted:

Supergirl"Supergirl" flew high -- very high -- in its debut last night, notching 12.9 million viewers. Even better, the CBS series earned a 3.2 share in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. This makes it the fall's highest-rated premiere.

Of course, "Supergirl" got a very big boost from mega-hit comedy "Big Bang Theory," which won't be the case in future weeks. But it's a promising sign for CBS, and is a lift for a lackluster fall season.

CBS teased the rest of the first season of "Supergirl" in a nearly two minute trailer.
The trailer is packed with action -- Melissa Benoist flying, breathing cold air, and hurling car doors at bad guys. We also get glimpses at upcoming characters, like Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan Tatum) and villains Reactron and Red Tornado. And it seems we won't have to wait too long before Supergirl faces off against her evil aunt!

'Back to the Future' Trilogy Cast: Where Are They Now?

Posted:

As many have noted in recently, the "Back to the Future" movies got a lot right about 2015 three decades ago. But there's a lot that doesn't look the way we all imagined it then, including the actors who starred in the trilogy.

Here's what actually became of them as they journeyed across time, without the aid of a souped-up DeLorean, into the year 2015.

"Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy" is available to own now on Blu-ray & DVD.

They Might Not Recast 'Indiana Jones' After All

Posted:

Indiana JonesThe debate about who might be the next Indiana Jones is only a fraction less fervent than the one about who might be the next James Bond. But it turns out, while there will definitely be a new Bond, there might not be a new Jones.

In an interview with Total Film, franchise producer Frank Marshall indicated that they aren't looking for an actor to take over the iconic role from Harrison Ford for the still-developing "Indiana Jones 5."

"We haven't even sat down to talk about Indy yet ... at some point we'll sit down. But there's a bunch of people who could probably take the baton," he said. "[But we are] not doing the Bond thing where we're going to call somebody else Indiana Jones ... we have to figure this out."

So, what does that mean? Would this be like "The Bourne Legacy," where Jeremy Renner played a different superspy with ties to Matt Damon's character? Perhaps Indiana Jones has a protege who can carry on the mantle.

One thing we do know? It certainly won't be Shia LaBeouf from "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

Best of Late Night TV: Mike Tyson's Drake Dance Moves and Adam Levine's Britney Spears Performance

Posted:

the tonight show starring jimmy fallon mike tyson hotline blingIf you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Let's kick things off with Kristen Wiig, who hit up "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to talk about her new movie. No, not "Ghostbusters." We're talking about the Acadamy Award-never-winning classic, "Crying in a Sweater," which basically features her sobbing into cozy sweaters, aka a typical Friday night for yours truly.

Over on "Late Night," Rachel Dratch and Seth Meyers sat down in a room full of candles and made amends for all the times they've hurt each others feels. Our favorite? Rachel saying "I'm sorry about the time I told your mom she was so brave for raising a gay son."
Please try not to keel over and die from happiness, but Mike Tyson recreated Drake's "Hotline Bling" dance moves, and the results were glorious. Mike Tyson for all the awards!
You may have heard that "Legally Blonde 3" is happening (WE ARE NOT WORTHY!), and Luke Wilson has some thoughts on whether or not we can expect his triumphant return to the land of Elle Woods. Spoiler alert: He seems into it.

Last but not least, all the celebs ever (ok fine, the coaches from "The Voice") joined Jimmy Fallon for a game of Spin the Microphone. No, they didn't have to makeout with each other, but they did have to belt out random songs every time the mic landed on them. And yes, Adam Levine sang "Oops...I Did It Again." And yes, it was amazing.
