The Best (and Craziest) Science Fiction Films at Fantastic Fest 2015 Posted: 05 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT Fantastic Fest is a celebration of genre films of all shapes, sizes and budgets. That means that in-between the Korean revenge flicks and the fantastical Japanese musicals and the American slasher throwbacks are science fiction films and the festival's track record with programming smart sci-fi has been awfully consistent. 2015, which featured the best line-up in Fantastic Fest's history, was no different. Here's what should be on your radar. For the Cynical Lovers of the Absurd: The Lobster The Lobster isn't a typical science fiction film. Hell, some won't even consider it a genre film of any kind. However, the press notes say that this allegorical, absurdist comedy takes place in a near-future dystopia, so we're going to run with it... Marvel Studios Countdown: Superhero Fatigue and What Marvel Is Doing to Fight It Posted: 05 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT If superhero fatigue is a real thing, the tipping point happened this Summer. Avengers: Age of Ultron’s box office returns were very strong but not strong enough to overtake the grosses for the original film. The initial gimmick of seeing the team assemble for the first time was spent and movie-goers’ reactions were more mixed, leading to less return business. Ant-Man had a troubled production and a race to its release date, and though it had its moments, the film could never land the “must-see” vibe that caused audiences to turn out in droves for the similarly unknown Marvel property Guardians of the Galaxy. In Hollywood math, even Ant-Man’s gross of $400 million worldwide can be considered a disappointment when the track record of the studio... Check This Out: The Future Pepsi from 'Back to the Future II' Is Becoming a Reality Posted: 05 Oct 2015 07:30 PM PDT As we wait to see if and when Nike will unveil their self-lacing sneakers, or who will invent a commercial hoverboard that actually floats on water -- or whether Hollywood can somehow bang out another 14 Jaws movies to wrap some truth around that prophecy -- there is one thing Back to the Future fans will be able to get their hands on next month in honor of the future date Marty McFly travels to in Back to the Future II: October 21, 2015. Pepsi has announced that it will sell a limited amount of Pepsi Perfect bottles tied to the host of celebrations taking place in the month of October for the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future, not to mention the anniversary of that aforementioned historical date from Back to the Future II. You remember this scene... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Keanu Reeves Teases What 'John Wick 2' Will Be About Posted: 05 Oct 2015 06:00 PM PDT John Wick has one of the most delightfully simple premises for an action movie in recent memory. A former assassin's dog is killed, so he tracks down every single person even remotely responsible and demolishes them. Granted, it's a bit more emotionally complex than that since the dog was a gift from his recently deceased wife, and it's a bit more logistically complex because it all takes place in this unreal world where assassins have their own hotels where they hang out together, but still, at its core, the motivations behind it all are clear cut. But what do you do for John Wick 2? His wife is already dead. His dog is already dead. When someone is already out of things to lose, what else can the bad guys take from him? Keanu Reeves gave Collider part of the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'The Flash' Finds Its Director In 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Writer Seth Grahame-Smith Posted: 05 Oct 2015 04:30 PM PDT Seth Grahame-Smith is no stranger to high profile Hollywood movies. He got his big break as the novelist behind Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and he also wrote the script for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. And while most of his produced projects to date haven't been monster hits with fans, he's clearly doing something right behind the scenes because studios consistently want to be in the Grahame-Smith business. He's been hired to write Beetlejuice 2 and The Lego Batman Movie, and Grahame-Smith's name has also been attached to Ninjago and a new Gremlins movie. But now he's in the process of landing his biggest job yet-- writing and directing DC Comics' The Flash (which is a... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
George Miller Is In Discussions With Warner Bros. About the Next 'Mad Max' Movie Posted: 05 Oct 2015 03:20 PM PDT Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the most popular movies of the year -- in addition to great reviews and decent box office, you just have to look at our Movie Culture roundups for how big a fan phenomenon it has become -- so it's time for Warner Bros. and filmmaker George Miller to get serious about those sequels that he teased back in May. And they seem to be doing just that. Here's the latest: There are two Mad Max: Fury Road sequels planned "We’ve got two more planned," Miller confirmed recently to BBC's Top Gear, "but at some point in the future." The writer-director explained that he spent so much time getting Fury Road made that he "had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of... Little is known about the movie, except that it will be "on the lower end of the budget scale."
