New 'Sherlock' Special Trailer Takes Holmes and Watson Back to the 19th Century

Posted:

SherlockChristmas has come early for "Sherlock" fans.

BBC One released the first trailer for this year's one-off "Sherlock" special, which is set in the 19th century instead of the present day. Very little of the plot is revealed in the trailer, but Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) are seen riding in a carriage, prowling around a dark English manor, and running through a catacomb-like space.
The tone is dark and spooky: a woman runs through a hedge maze; multiple pistols are cocked and aimed; Holmes puffs away at his pipe; and there are a couple of shots of a cult-ish people seemingly in large conical hats. And clearly, Sherlock does something nefarious in Watson's eyes, as Watson demands to know, "What made you like this?"

"Oh, Watson. Nothing made," Holmes replies with a sigh. "I made me."

The special was though to to run on Christmas Day, but the trailer merely teases "Coming Soon" at the end.

Disney Casts Newest Princess, Moana

Posted:

DisneyDisney's newest princess has finally found her voice.

After an exhaustive search, the studio has cast 14-year-old native Hawaiian, Auli'i Cravalho, in "Moana," which is due in theaters in November 2016. "From baby time to now, I wanted to be a Disney princess and then I wanted to be a singer or an actress," Cravalho told People.

The titular character is a teen girl living some 2,000 years ago, who sets out on an arduous sea journey to prove herself as a master navigator. Along the way, she meets demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who accompanies her as they face enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

In this video, Cravalho learns she's won the role of a lifetime:
Her co-star, Johnson, welcomed her to the team: Cravalho is excited to work with The Rock - but even more excited to hear him sing. Because, yes, "Moana" is a musical! "I've never heard him sing before so it's going to be really interesting!"

'Melrose Place' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Posted:

Sure, you like "Scandal" and "Empire" now, but the drama that made primetime safe for jaw-dropping, over-the-top plot twists was "Melrose Place." Anything could happen on the 1992-99 spinoff of "Beverly Hills, 90210," no matter how crazy. As series creator Darren Star recalled years later, "Bad taste was never a consideration. If we were laughing, we knew we were onto something."

The nighttime soap about a group of post-collegiate neighbors at a West Hollywood apartment complex not only spawned two spinoffs of its own (mid-'90s drama "Models, Inc." and a rebooted "Melrose Place" in 2009-10), but it also sparked the careers of several young rising stars, as well as giving career boosts to a couple of veterans. Now that it's the latest show to get the "Unauthorized" treatment on Lifetime ("The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story" debuts Saturday, October 10), it's time to learn what became of the actors who used to gather around that notorious courtyard swimming pool.melrose place cast

E.L. James Posts 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Freed' Teases With Sequel Director

Posted:

E.L. James, you are such a tease! (And that's how you got rich.) The next movie in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy -- "Fifty Shades Darker" -- isn't scheduled for release until February 10, 2017. But wheels appear to be in motion, since author E.L. James just shared three interesting photos on Instagram, including one with movie No. 2 director James Foley. Is he also going to direct No. 3?

Foley is scheduled to direct "Darker," based on the second book in James's series. The third book/movie, "Fifty Shades Freed," has a release date of February 9, 2018. Niall Leonard, who is also James's husband, has been announced as the writer for "Darker." But perhaps both are meant to join the team for No. 3.

Leonard and Foley are together in a photo James recently shared, after she posted a teaser just showing her "Darker" and "Freed" book covers, and a shot at Comcast NBCUniversal (which suggests some sequel-talk meetings with studio execs):

So ... is that an announcement that James Foley is the guy for FSD and FSF and Leonard is also writing the final script? Or is this just meant to show fans that progress is happening on the second film, even if we won't see it for a long time?

Star Dakota Johnson (Ana) told Ellen they wouldn't start shooting the second movie, "Darker," until sometime in the new year. In late September, producer Dana Brunetti shot down a casting rumor to E!, saying they were "nowhere near casting" for the second movie, beyond the main roles that were carrying over from "Fifty Shades of Grey." But it looks like, at the very least, some script talks for both Movie 2 and Movie 3 are being held between the dream team of the book author, the screenwriter, and the director.

A-List Bad Cops Do the Dirty in Violent 'Triple 9' Red Band Trailer

Posted:

The streets are sexy, dirty, scary, brutal, and did we mention sexy (that's for you, Norman Reedus) in the new red band trailer for "Triple 9."

The code "Triple 9" is used for an officer down. This heist movie, directed by John Hillcoat and starring a dozen Hollywood standouts -- including Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Norman Reedus, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, to name a few -- follows a group of corrupt cops and criminals who plan the murder of a police officer to pull off a major heist.

The trailer shows as much sex, violence, bad words, and bare boobs and booty as you'd expect from a crime thriller red band trailer. It starts with Woody Harrelson chiding fellow officer Casey Affleck that his job is not to make a f--king difference, it's to "out monster the monster and get home at the end of the night."

Cue a creepy version of "This Little Piggy..." as we see cops vs. civilians, stuff blowing up, and what looks like several Deadpool cosplay characters running around at the end. (Probably not their intention, but still.) The trailer teases, "On these streets, nothing is black and white."

Check it out:

Watch the trailer.

"Triple 9" is scheduled for release on February 19, 2016. February is not known to be an impressive release month for movies, but maybe this will be one of the exceptions. After all, "summer" starts earlier ever year!

Rooney Mara 'Felt Really Bad' About White Tiger Lily Casting Criticism

Posted:

Rooney Mara gets why some people shook their heads at the casting of a white actress as Tiger Lily in the new movie "Pan." Some cried "whitewashing" -- like Emma Stone in "Aloha" -- to give the role to a white actress instead of a Native American one, since so few roles are given to Native actresses and here's a part that was written as non-white from the start.

Rooney Mara addressed the criticism while promoting the movie at the NYC premiere:

"It wasn't great, I felt really bad about it," she told People. "It was something that I thought about before I met with [director Joe Wright]. When I met with Joe and heard what his plans for it were, it was something I really wanted to be a part of. But I totally sympathize with why people were upset and feel really bad about it."
Director Joe Wright also addressed the decision:

"I thought about the idea of having a Native American tribe, and that worried me actually," he told the New York Daily News. "What would I be saying with that choice? So then I thought, 'Well, where should they be from?' And I couldn't decide, so I felt like picking just one race would be an unwise choice. So then I thought about the potential of them being the indigenous people of the [entire] planet." He wanted to avoid alienating any culture with stereotypes from the original story, so he used a mix of ethnicities to populate the Native village, and Rooney Mara as the Native American princess. "It felt like Rooney had this kind of beautiful princess, kick-ass character."

Changing a character's race is always a touchy subject -- just ask Michael B. Jordan in "Fantastic Four" -- but Tiger Lily's casting probably won't affect how "Pan" performs, for better or worse. The real problem is that if the studio wanted both a famous name and a Native American actress for "Pan" they'd be out of luck, since most of Hollywood's famous film starlets are white and many viewers would be hard-pressed to name even one Native American actress. This is why they could use more casting. You can't become as known and respected as Rooney Mara if no one gives you a chance to begin with.

19 Reasons Caroline Forbes Is the Best Part of 'The Vampire Diaries'

Posted:

"The Vampire Diaries" is making its triumphant return this week, but a very familiar face will be missing. The season six finale was Nina Dobrev's last as Mystic Falls main lady, Elena Gilbert. While fans will definitely miss Elena, they shouldn't be worried because the best character is sticking around.

Caroline Forbes (Candice King) is a better person than Elena could ever try to be. (Sorry, not sorry.) She is the queen of effing everything and we have the receipts to prove it. And by receipts, we mean GIFs. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the pure awesomeness that is Caroline Forbes. You're welcome.

ABC Family Changes Name to Freeform and the Internet Is Not Impressed

Posted:

ABC Family is pulling a Syfy and changing its name to Freeform, starting in January 2016, and viewers seem to think this puts it closer to a bra or a feminine hygiene product than a network aiming for a younger audience.

The change is part of a massive re-branding to attract 14-34 "Becomers," with ABC Family President Tom Ascheim using a ton of buzzwords and management speak to explain why, for the first time in 27 years, the channel won't have "Family' in the name. "In many ways, this feels to us like an evolution - not a huge change," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "If we wanted to grow and reach new people, we couldn't have this very narrow sense of who we were and hope to attract new consumers. In an attempt to build on our strength and attract new folks, we thought it was time to change our name."
Apparently the core viewers understand the younger, social-media active brand while non-viewers associate it with wholesome and family-friendly programming. "We wanted to harmonize our content and out brand," Ascheim said (via Deadline). "By achieving that harmony, we would be much better positioned to keep our core viewers and add new viewers."

They even made a poster and shared a video on the transition:

It does seem like there's a lot of "try" happening. The prez said they considered about 3,000 names, and "Freeform" stood out in testing. "Freeform evokes the spirit and adventure of our audience."

You have to wonder what the other options must've been, 'cause the Internet did not respond favorably. Here's a selection of comments from Entertainment Weekly, Deadline, THR and Twitter:

"Freeform is the worst name I have ever heard. #lame"

"The same was said about The CW. We'll get used to it."

"Freeform sounds like a feminine hygiene product."

"I can't picture anyone saying 'Did you watch that new show on Freeform last night?'"

"'We got an overwhelmingly positive response. Freeform sounds like fun.' ...ummm I think they got trolled that's a horrible name."

"Freeform? Who tested that name to positive response? This is like when Netflix decided to change its name only to immediately back-pedal and deny ever having spent millions on re-branding to whatever horrid name they thought people would like better."

"ABC Family does deserve a name that steps away from the 'wholesome' and 'conservative' stigma that come along with the mention of 'family.' Most of the network is directly aimed at teens. ABC Teen would fit a lot better. ABC Millennium would also sound nice. Freeform sounds like a show about a Trans teen going to art school. Which is probably on its way to the production room as we speak, actually."

"Granted, I'm not their target audience, but Freeform has no immediate recognition. While that's true of most new channels, a 3 letter moniker seems to be easier to remember and can truely identify your niche. MTV was perfect, when they actually played music. Its like the new Esquire channel. The name means nothing when one looks at their schedule."

"Awful name, what the f-ck is that even suppose to mean?"

"Holy shite!! And I thought SyFy was a bad name....."

"Because Freeform is so much more memorable and descriptive than ABCFamily."

"LOL! This new name is supposed to bring in young viewers??"

"Sounds like a feminine hygiene product. What a stupid name."

"This looks like an overly self-conscious marketing presentation in a movie about advertising where the executive that created it gets deservedly fired two minutes later."

"#Freeform sounds like a new political movement than a TV network for the 18-34 demographic. #dumbname"

"sorry abc family i just cant get past the fact that freeform sounds like a bra brand for preteens"

"The choice of name is odd. But the far more pressing matter whether or not they will continue 'Harry Potter' marathons."

Agreed about the Harry Potter issue. The rest is just noise and doesn't really affect day-to-day life.

Will Smith Still Hasn't Met 'Suicide Squad' Co-Star Jared Leto

Posted:

Jared Leto went so Method to play The Joker in "Suicide Squad" that he missed his opportunity to bond with The Fresh Prince. Filming is now over for David Ayer's DC Comics movie, which stars Will Smith as Deadshot, but Smith chatted with Beats 1 Radio about the Squad (as well as his new music). He was asked about working with Jared Leto and gave a somewhat unexpected answer:

How 'bout this? I've never actually met Jared Leto. So we worked together for six months and we've never exchanged a word outside of 'Action!' and 'Cut!' We've never said 'Hello,' we never said 'good day.' I've only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker. I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be 'Hey, Jared. What's up?' 'Will, hey man, how you doing? Nice to meet you.' Never, not a single word exchanged off camera. He was all in on the Joker."

Question: Has anyone ever really met Jared Leto? He seems so out there, and always in some kind of character. This is not a bad thing, it's an intriguing thing. It's possible you'd meet someone new every time. Then again, in Hollywood, with so many actors going Method, this has to happen a lot. Like, what would happen if Jared Leto, Daniel Day-Lewis, Christian Bale, and, say, Matthew McConaughey worked on a movie together -- would any of those actors actually meet each other or just their characters? Meryl Streep never seems to have this problem -- she just shows up, gets into the perfect character, and then goes back into being Meryl Streep with no drama.

Here's Will Smith's nearly 20 minute talk, in case you want to hear more from him:

"Suicide Squad" is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

11 TV Shows That Were YA Before YA Was a Thing

Posted:

The only thing hotter in Hollywood than comic books is young adult fiction.

Studio execs are constantly searching for the next book or book series to turn into the next "Fault In Our Stars." They also look to tweens' shelves to find content for the small screen -- even though several of your favorite shows already beat 'em to the punch. From "Buffy" to "Dawson," here are 11 shows that went full YA before YA was even a thing.

Best of Late Night TV: Jay Leno Returns to 'Tonight,' Nina Dobrev's 'Pile High Club,' Lady Gaga's Favorite Shows

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

This is pretty big news, considering the history of "The Tonight Show." Jimmy Fallon was doing his monologue Tuesday night, and after telling a joke about Bernie Sanders, he faked an injury and asked for someone to "tag in" for him. Enter ... Jay Leno! Jay infamously battled both David Letterman and Conan O'Brien for the "Tonight Show" desk, but at least he and Fallon are still apparently on good terms. Jay must miss telling jokes on network TV at 11:30, since that was his thing for so long.
Lady Gaga was on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday night, although she didn't do one of the fun games. (She should've done Wheel of Musical Impressions!) Here she is talking to Jimmy Fallon about her favorite shows, including "Dateline" (?) and "Snapped." She went to acting school for almost 10 years, but she was terrible and awkward at auditions and couldn't get a job so she became a singer. She also discussed doing the Polar Plunge in Chicago with fiance Taylor Kinney, showed off her huge engagement ring rock, and explained her blood-drinking narcissist character in "American Horror Story: Hotel," which premieres tonight.
Bill Clinton -- aka Secretary of Explaining Stuff -- explained why Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are doing so well. Here's part of his conversation with Stephen Colbert: Ronda Rousey made herself even more fans when "Geeking Out" over video games, talking about her long history with Pokemon, World of Warcraft and other games.

"The Late Late Show" keeps having too much fun, and here are "The Vampire Diaries" alum Nina Dobrev and former SNL-er Chris Parnell doing a game called "Pile High Club." The celebs should've been the ones forced to hold all that crap! Eric Stonestreet talked to Jimmy Kimmel about "Modern Family" NOT winning the Emmy, after winning five years in a row. He also shared his latest prank on co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The prank was just earlier tha day and Jesse didn't even know yet. Eric grabbed Jesse's phone and "liked" a bunch of female butt twerking videos so everyone could see. Ellen Page, still promoting "Freeheld," offered a stand-up audition for "Conan," complete with a very professional hairbrush mic. Rose McIver of "iZombie" was on JKL and talked about her character eating the brain of a magician on the show. So she showed off a cool card trick: Rooney Mara talked about her "crying tent" on the set of "Pan" and how she almost got that living saint Hugh Jackman to snap.
