'Arrow' Showrunners Reveal How Oliver Queen Suddenly Became Hilarious Posted: Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) spent the first three seasons of his successful CW series battling his inner demons by shooting holes in them with arrows, but after screening the superb Season 4 premiere, Moviefone is happy to report our hero has finally learned healthier ways to cope. Last season ended with Ollie jumping into a convertible with his ladylove Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) as the two of them quite literally took the long and windy road toward happily ever after. A few months have passed by the time Season 4 picks up, but Oliver's shiny new disposition still holds strong. He eventually winds his way back to Star City, of course, but not before rebranding himself as the Green Arrow, complete with his greenest suit yet. Oliver is "trying to be more of an inspiration and less of the judge, jury, and executioner we've seen in the past," Wendy Mericle, "Arrow's" newly anointed co-showrunner, explained after a screening of the premiere episode. But Oliver's sunny new disposition isn't the only big change in store. From a fantastically funny new villain to a drastic increase in metahuman and mystical occurrences, here are a few more things to expect from Wednesday's game-changing "Arrow" opener and the season ahead: Oliver Is Funny Ha Ha, and the Tone Is Light Specifically, the show is hilariously funny at times. Perhaps funnier than it has ever been. Sure, Felicity has always been good at cracking wise, but for the first time Speedy, Diggle, and Oliver -- yes, that Oliver -- are also joining in on the fun. "It's coming from where Oliver is as a character," explained Mericle. "He's happier now. He's in love with Felicity. He's no longer the post-traumatic stress disorder suffering soldier he was in the first three seasons." Did we mention the new villain is hilarious, too? Speaking of which... New Blood, Bad Blood, Nerd Blood The approach paid off, with McDonough absolutely stealing every scene in which he appears. "There's a real glimmer in his eye whenever he's putting the screws to somebody," co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim explained. "It is something we haven't seen on the show before." Mr. Terrific, meanwhile, will eventually fill a Ray Palmer-shaped hole in the hearts of the Scooby Gang. From the sound of it, he won't be cracking skulls in the street with Oliver, John Diggle (David Ramsey), Black Canary (Katie Cassidy), and Speedy (Willa Holland), but will instead stay glued to the computers in Team Arrow's lair, which means he and Felicity will have a lot of opportunity to interact. Kellum's character "has a strong tech background and is somebody for Felicity to talk to, to have scenes with," Mericle revealed. "It's very magical. They are great together." But their new relationship isn't the only magic in store this season... Magical Mystical Tour "We started out with the clear intention of doing a grounded show: no superheroes, no metahumans, no powers, no magic," Guggenheim said. "But then Warner Bros. and The CW said they really wanted us to spinoff Flash -- so we said, 'Okay, I guess we're doing superpowers now!'" This season, the showrunners have doubled down on the mysticism with Damien Darhk, who promises to be "Arrow's" most magically delicious character yet. The show's previous villains, like Slade Wilson, Malcolm Merlyn, and Ra's al Ghul, were mostly super-charged fighters, but Darhk is different species of evil. He isn't physically imposing and he doesn't need to be, as he can wave away arrows with his hand and drain the life out of a man with one touch. Relying heavily upon sorcery and superpowers is, of course, a gamble, but Guggenheim believes his show can stay grounded "as long as the characters' reactions are realistic." "If they react how we would react, it makes the fantastical less fantastic," he added. "Arrow" returns to The CW for Season 4 on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Fall Movie Preview 2015: The 37 Most Must-See Films Posted: Out with the spandex, in with the Spanx. It's tempting to think of fall as the movie season where superhero films clear out of the multiplex, leaving it to grown-up fare -- Oscar hopefuls that are more about character than action. Not so this year. Sure, there'll be plenty of mature movies from brand-name directors like Spielberg and Tarantino. But there are also several eagerly-awaited installments of blockbuster franchises, including the next James Bond, the final "Hunger Games," and, oh yeah, the first new episode of "Star Wars" in 10 years. Whatever your taste, there are lots of fall movies to get excited about. From "Mockingjay" to "Spectre," here are 37 films you need to see. 'Dancing With the Stars' Pro Allison Holker Is Pregnant Posted: The dancer revealed her exciting news live on Monday's episode of "DWTS," which revolved around the theme of "most memorable year." Holker -- who was joined by Boss and her 7-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, Weslie, for the announcement -- told host Erin Andrews that 2015 would be a memorable year for her family because she just found out that she's pregnant with the couple's first child together. "It's something that we have wanted for so long, and now it's actually happening and it feels like the biggest blessing," Holker said in an interview with Us Weekly. Holker and Boss met while performing as All-Star contestants on Fox reality series "So You Think You Can Dance." They married in December 2013. Fortunately for "DWTS" fans, Holker's pregnancy won't affect her status on the show: the dancer said she's been cleared by her doctor to continue dancing with partner Andy Grammer for as long as he remains on the program. Holker and her last partner, Riker Lynch, finished second on season 20. Congrats to the happy parents-to-be! 'Twilight' Is Swapping Genders for Its 10th Anniversary Edition Posted: Instead, Meyers penned a new tale that retells "Twilight" from a gender-swapped point of view, with a boy named Beau subbing in for Bella, and a girl vampire called Edythe replacing Edward. It's the same story, but now, Beau must decide if he's #TeamEdythe or #TeamJulie (yup, werewolf Jacob is gender-swapped, too) in "Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined." In an interview with "Good Morning America," Meyer explained that for the book's 10th anniversary, she "wanted to do something fun" for fans. While her publisher suggested writing a new forward, Meyer said she decided to do "something more interesting," and took a cue from Bella herself, who Meyer said was unfairly characterized as a "damsel in distress." "It's always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be ... in distress. We don't have the powers," Meyer told "GMA." "I thought, 'What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,' and, you know, it's about the same." Despite the gender switcheroo, Meyer said the essence of "Twilight" remains in the new, 400-page story. "... [I]t really is the same story because it's just a love story and it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl, it still works out," the author explained. 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2' Final Trailer Will Give You Chills Posted: The clip is soundtracked by Katniss's (Jennifer Lawrence) desperate plea to the people of Panem to help her and the rest of the rebels from District 13 take down President Snow (Donald Sutherland), as she details all the abuses that they have suffered at his hands. Viewers are also given a glimpse at what awaits the fighters inside the Capitol, which has been booby-trapped with a host of horrors to beat back the rebels at any cost -- and that includes the loss of many lives. The burden of that loss is placed squarely on Katniss's shoulders, as the trailer also makes it clear that though she wants to defeat Snow, she understands the price she is asking her fellow citizens to pay. Will everything she and others have sacrificed be worth it in the end? Fans will find out on November 20, when "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" hits theaters. The 10 Most Terrifying 'American Horror Story' Characters, Ranked by Scariness Posted: The twisted world of "American Horror Story" has made it difficult for audiences to sleep going on four seasons now, and even though it shocks the living daylights out of us, we just can't get enough. The tangled, psychotic, bloody web the anthology series has weaved has been chock full of all kinds of unhinged, murdery characters. Some of their complex stories make way for a glimmer of our sympathy, while others are just downright coldblooded, bone-chilling killers. From "Murder House" to "Freak Show," here are some of the most terrifying beings to ever come out of "American Horror Story," ranked by their ability to pretty much scare the crap out of us. Nancy Drew May Be Solving Mysteries on TV Soon Posted: CBS is developing a "contemporary take on the character from the iconic book series" as a potential series. The project features a thirtysomething Nancy, who is "a detective for the NYPD where she investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world." "Grey's Anatomy" writers and executive producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater are on board to pen the script. Nancy Drew first appeared in books in the 1930s. The novels were written by multiple authors under the name Carolyn Keene, and have been adapted for the big and small screens a number of times. Previous attempts at a TV show include: "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries," which ran from 1977-79; a short-lived '90s series, canceled midway through its first season; and a 2002 TV movie starring Maggie Lawson. This new attempt to bring Nancy Drew to television continues the trend of reboots and revivals. This season has already seen the premieres of "The Muppets," "Heroes Reborn," "Minority Report," and "Limitless"; we still have "Prison Break," "The X-Files," "Twin Peaks," and "Rush Hour" yet to come. And there are plans for new versions of "MacGyver," "The Notebook," and "The A-Team." Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. New 'Good Dinosaur' Trailer Is All About #FriendshipGoals Posted: Pixar unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming movie, which gives more insight into the prehistoric world that Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa) inhabits. As previous teasers laid out, this is Earth if an asteroid never hit it and wiped out dino-kind. Thus, dinosaurs are intelligent and can talk. After a flash flood separates Arlo from his family, the young Apatosaurus has to embark on an arduous journey to reunite with them. Along the way, he befriends a human boy and even finds mentors in a trio of T-rexes. Carnivores and herbivores getting along ... who woulda thunk it? Like the first couple of teasers, the trailer is breathtakingly beautiful. The backgrounds are incredibly photo-realistic; this is Pixar, after all. But now, we get more of Arlo speaking, the human boy's behavior (he acts more like a puppy), and other dinosaur characters, like a pet-hoarding Triceratops. The tone is very cute, feel-good, and heartwarming, and we have no doubt we'll be crying like babies when we see it. "The Good Dinosaur" opens Nov. 25. This will mark the first time Pixar will (likely) compete against itself in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars, since they released the acclaimed "Inside Out" this summer. This 'Jaws 19' Trailer From 'Back to the Future II' Is the Greatest Thing Ever Posted: Universal has been hyping the 30th anniversary of the classic movie with some cool promotions - including Pepsi Perfect becoming an actual thing - but this one might be the best: a trailer for "Jaws 19." The fake trailer teases the movie by mentioning the previous sequels - like when Jaws started a family, battled a Russian shark named Ivan Sharkovsky, and learned about love in "Jaws 17: Fifty Scales of Grey." Too funny! In "Back to the Future II," a poster for"Jaws 19" boasted that, "This time, it's really really personal." Unfortunately, critics didn't love it and future USA Today deemed it "'Jaws' without a bite." Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Did Vin Diesel Reveal the New Director For 'Furious 8'? Posted: The Wrap broke the news on Monday afternoon that "Straight Outta Compton" director F. Gary Gray was the frontrunner for the job. "Fast and Furious" star and producer Vin Diesel seemed to confirm that on Facebook, when he posted a photo of himself and Gray sitting in front of a franchise vision board: Posted by Vin Diesel on Monday, October 5, 2015 The question over who would direct "Furious 8" has been simmering for weeks. James Wan, who helmed "Furious 7," declined to return, choosing to focus on "Conjuring 2." And Justin Lin, the director of movies 3-6, is busy with the next "Star Trek" movie. There was talk that Diesel's very hands-on involvement in the franchise was making the search difficult, and that perhaps the star was considering taking the job for himself. Gray seems like a good fit for "Furious 8" - he's directed a car-centric movie ("The Italian Job") and worked with Diesel on "A Man Apart." And he's golden with Universal after the stratospheric success of "Straight Outta Compton." "Furious 8" is set to hit theaters in April 2017. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 6 Things You Need to Know About 'Arrow' Season 4 Posted: Here are six things you need to know about the new season of "Arrow." 1. Arrow Is Dead! Long Live the New Arrow! Everyone thinks Arrow was Roy (Colton Haynes) and Oliver Queen is not about to resurrect his alter ego. As Amell told TV Line. "Roy outed himself as the Arrow, so if I were to recreate the suit and go out, it would undo all of the sacrifice that he made. So the Arrow persona, for better or for worse, it can't exist anymore." However, Queen (as Green Arrow?) is back with a bitchin' new outfit because he's still got a city to save. He also has a spiffy new lair to accommodate the growing Team Arrow, per EW. 2. There's a New Bad Guy in Town Neal McDonough ("Public Morals," "Justified") is playing Damien Darhk, who producers tell TV Line, is "a mysterious and sophisticated villain, and an adversary of the late Ra's Al Ghul. Now the leader of his own clandestine group, this cunning foe will prove to be one of the Arrow's greatest challenges." As executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW, "He's really pure evil, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his ends." What are his powers? Guggenheim, won't say exactly, telling TVLine, "He can definitely kick your ass, but he can do it in a different way than Arrow's other foes. 3. Constantine, Back From the Dead! 4. Olicity 4Eva! 5. Diggle and Arrow Make Up "Their reconciliation, how they get there, is going to be a bumpy ride. It's not going to be fully resolved," executive producer Wendy Mericle tells TVLine. Diggle (David Ramsay) also gets a new crime-fighting look. Not everyone was digging Digs' new helmet though, with fans thinking it looked too much like Magneto. "I know there's a lot of criticism that it looks like the Magneto helmet. But by the time you see Diggle in action -- we also get into what the helmet can do -- you won't be thinking of the X-Men at all," he told TV Guide. 6. Thea Is Now the Troubled Superhero What's wrong Speedy? https://t.co/vsxmZLRRMG - Stephen Amell (@amellywood) June 18, 2015 This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Best of Late Night TV: Shaq and Hugh Jackman's Hilarious 'Phone Booth,' Taylor Swift Soap Opera Posted: This is classic. On Monday night, "The Tonight Show" guests Hugh Jackman and Shaquille O'Neal played "Phone Booth" with Jimmy Fallon. Just seeing Shaq try to fit into a phone booth was hilarious, but then -- for every wrong answer -- a stranger from The Mystery Bench was shoved into their booth. Hugh got the first question right, so "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek squeezed into Shaq's booth. Cate Blanchett and Chace Crawford were on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." One of them discussed his new facial hair. The other revealed she got her son's name from "Captain Underpants." JKL hit the streets and asked "What's the Most Impressive Thing You've Ever Done?" and one woman had a rather unexpected answer, involving a Tampa hockey player: Because RBF is a serious issue -- serious enough to affect Queen Elizabeth and Kanye -- "Conan" addressed it head on. So here are Conan O'Brien and Andy Richter discussing Resting Bitch Face: In case you were worried, John McCain told Stephen Colbert he "slept like a baby" after losing the 2008 election. ("Sleep two hours, wake up and cry, sleep two hours, wake up and cry.") He's funny! At least he didn't pull an Al Gore. In a continuing quest to discover Who Is Stephen Colbert, Stephen took a lie detector and shared the results on air: Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
