Jean-Claude Van Damme (Swelter) and director Ernie Barbarash (Falcon Rising) are joining forces for the fourth time in Antwerp Heist, a Belgian-Canadian co-production that starts shooting in March (via HLN).

The film is presumed to be loosely based on the real events of the 2003 Antwerp Diamond Heist, dubbed the “heist of the century,” which was the largest diamond heist in history – with stolen jewellery valued over $100 million.

Van Damme and Barbarash previously collaborated together on 2011′s Assassination Games, 2012′s Six Bullets and 2015′s Pound of Flesh.

Other Van Damme projects supposedly in the works include The Penrose Affair and The Tower. His long-awaited, unreleased Eagle Path (aka Full Love) is rumored to be finally getting a release early next year.

Stay tuned on the latest updates regarding Antwerp Heist.

According to TTB, Patrick Hughes (Expendables 3) has dropped out of The Raid remake. In addition, Screen Gems is no longer affiliated, leaving XYZ Films as the sole production company attached to the project.

For the last year or so, The Raid remake seemed to be stuck in development hell. The woud-be English-language remake involved a DEA task team that goes on secret Navy SEAL-style missions who work across borders. The idea was to bring in Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian (the stars and choreographers of the original and its sequel) to stage the hand-to-hand action sequences.

Gareth Evans (read our archived interview with him here), the director of the original – and producer of the remake – expressed interest in having both Scott Adkins (Zero Tolerance) and Michael Jai White (Falcon Rising) as potential leads. Others stars attached included Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Luke Evans, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Ethan Hawke and Taylor Kitsch.

We’ll keep you updated on the status of The Raid remake as we learn more. Stay tuned.

John Woo to return to Hollywood for a ‘Killer’ remake?

In a recent interview with Screen Daily, John Woo – the legendary Hong Kong action director behind A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head and Hard Boiled – is aiming to direct an English-language remake of his 1989 film, The Killer.

“I still have a couple of projects developing in Hollywood, so after Manhunt, I probably will go back to Hollywood to make another action thriller. I'm going to make The Killer in an American version."

The idea of remaking The Killer is nothing new. Back in 1992, director Walter Hill (48 Hrs) wrote a screenplay titled The Killer, based on Woo film. It was set to star Richard Gere and Denzel Washington. Due to scripting problems revolving around the main characters, the project was never realized.

Then in 2012, news started to circulate that The Killer would be remade in 3D by Korean filmmaker John H. Lee (The Cut Runs Deep) with Jung Woo-sun (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) attached as one of the leads. John Travolta, who previously collaborated with Woo on Broken Arrow and Face/Off, was “entertaining the possibility” of starring in the remake as well.

For now, Woo currently has his hands full with number of “ongoing” projects, including the aforementioned Manhunt (a remake of Jun’ya Sato’s 1976 film of the same name), Day of the Beast (a remake of Seijun Suzuki's 1963 film Youth of the Beast), a possible untitled wuxia film with Tsui Hark, the WWII-themed Flying Tigers, and a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's 1967 film Le Samourai. At this time, Woo is filming his segment of Eight & a Half, an eight-part anthology film exploring the history of Hong Kong from the 1940s to present day.

As always, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more!
