What You Need to Know About Gothic Romance Before Seeing 'Crimson Peak' Posted: 14 Oct 2015 09:30 PM PDT Guillermo del Toro does not consider his latest feature, Crimson Peak, a horror movie. "It's a Gothic romance, first and foremost." But what does that mean? Here's what you need to know about the genre and where del Toro's take on it fits in: What is Gothic romance? According to the Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms, the simplest way to put it is "a story of terror and suspense, usually set in a gloomy old castle or monastery." There are plenty of other defining characteristics depending on the source of classification, one being that the gloomy old structure is falling apart, another being that the protagonist is a young woman torn between two romantic suitors, one more charming and one more dark and mysterious. There's... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

James Cameron's Dream Project 'Battle Angel Alita' Finds a New Director Posted: 14 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT Even if you don't like James Cameron's movies, there is no denying he is an absolute pioneer; an innovator and a boundary pusher who has earned the rare luxury of taking his sweet time on getting the movies he wants to make off the ground without compromises. And for a long time in his career, there were two projects he wanted to make but just felt the technology wasn't quite ready yet. One of them was his original creation Avatar and the other a live-action adaptation of a manga called Battle Angel Alita. As we all know, Avatar is now in the history books as the highest grossing movie of all time. And while for a bit it seemed like Cameron would then pivot to Battle Angel Alita, that never happened. Cameron is working on approximately five hundred simultaneous Avatar... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Are These the Best Movies of the Past 25 Years? Posted: 14 Oct 2015 06:30 PM PDT For movie fans, one of the most difficult decisions you'll ever have to make is somehow choosing a favorite movie of all time. Slightly easier is picking a favorite movie of the year, and if you wrote down your favorite movie each year for the past 25 years, we're curious to see how closely it matches this list from IMDB. To celebrate the site's 25th anniversary, they shared the top-ranked movie of each of the last 25 years (via Vanity Fair) -- and while the list definitely feels more like a popular vote versus a critical look at that year's best piece of filmmaking, there are still a lotta great movies on there. Check out the list below, with kudos going to Leonardo DiCaprio and Morgan Freeman, who each have four movies represented. And also the Lord of the... Poster Premiere: 'Dangerous Men' Introduces Two Classic Action Movie Icons Posted: 14 Oct 2015 05:00 PM PDT Filmmakers are an inherently maniacal breed of people. They believe they have something in their head that is so profound they most enlist a small army of men and women to pry it from their very imaginations, capture it on an ephemeral medium, and then broadcast it to other human beings in the hope that the insane process conjures some kind of impression on them. To that end, Dangerous Men is the purest of cinema. This movie, which took 26 years to make, is a stunning example of one man trying his damnedest to crack open his own soul and share it with the world. The resulting action movie about a woman's quest to rid the world of criminal scum is, by traditional standards, a bad movie. But a more truthful bad movie you may never see. There are a lot of people who are going... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Geek Beat: 'Avatar' Comics, an R-rated Batman and More New York Comic-Con Highlights Posted: 14 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT This year's New York Comic-Con is in the rearview mirror, and all that's left is to look back on the east coast convergence of all things geeky and try to make sense of all the news that came out of the convention. New York's major comic convention tends to be a bit lighter on the movie elements than its San Diego counterpart, but this year's show still featured quite a bit of noteworthy announcements and big reveals tied to some past and much-anticipated future movie projects. From Avatar comics to a rated-”R” Batman movie, there was a lot to digest at this year's convention. Here are some of the highlights from the movie side of the show. James Cameron's Avatar Heads to Comics During the NYCC panel for Dark Horse Comics, the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Are Westerns Making a Comeback? New 'Django' Nabs John Sayles As Writer Posted: 14 Oct 2015 01:30 PM PDT We've been hearing a lot about Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, the writer/director's second Western in recent years, due out in theaters at the end of the year. Kurt Russell is featured as part of that film's ensemble cast and, as it happens, also stars in Bone Tomahawk, another Western that recently debuted at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on October 23. Now comes word about yet another Western under development, one that's just secured a terrific writer. Academy Award-nominated John Sayles (above) has been hired to write Django Lives!, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the third installment in a series that began with 1966's Django and continued with 1987's Django 2. Back in the 1960s, the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
