May Geek Guide: 'Spider-Man,' 'Star Wars,' 'Ninja Turtles,' 'Godzilla' and More Posted: 06 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT The summer movie season is officially here, and along with an impressive lineup of films arriving in theaters this month, there's also a heap of cool comics and collectibles hitting shelves. Basically, May is a great month to be a geek. From Peter Parker's big return to the screen and comics (he's been out of commission in Marvel Comics continuity for over a year now, just in case you haven't been following along at home), to some big books befitting the King of all Monsters, there's more than enough to drool over in this week's list of highlights. So without further ado, let's get on with the geeking out, shall we? What to Read May is certainly a big month for Marvel's web slinger, and there's just as much Spider-Man... Director's Notebook: Randy Moore on the Hardest Scene to Shoot at Disney for 'Escape from Tomorrow' Posted: 06 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT In this monthly column we spotlight new Blu-ray/DVD releases by interviewing directors about the scenes that stood out most for them while making their movies. This month, we talk to Randy Moore about his black-and-white guerilla-made thriller set in Walt Disney parks, Escape from Tomorrow (out now on DVD/Blu-ray). Struggling to get his scripts noticed in Hollywood, Randy Moore came up with a radical idea while vacationing with his family at Disney World: making a movie in the Disney parks. Moore’s love-hate relationship with the parks fueled him to write and direct Escape from Tomorrow, about a father (Roy Abramsohn) with loose morals who goes on a strange, fever dream-like adventure through Disney World. Filmed on location at Disney World and Disneyland, Moore’s... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 06 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT Veronica Mars - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Rob Thomas Cast: Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Chris Lowell, Tina Majorino It'd be hard to imagine anyone who had never seen a single episode of the Veronica Mars television show to get much of anything out of the movie. When director Rob Thomas said he was making this one for the fans, he really wasn't kidding. It's essentially the movie equivalent of a Rolodex, with constant call backs to characters and events from the show that would be utterly meaningless to anyone who didn't already understand them. And that's a bummer, because V. Mars as a character, and her small-town world of Neptune, really is greatly entertaining... once you get to know her. Unfortunately the movie doesn't... Watch One Guy Do the Famous 'Napoleon Dynamite' Dance for 100 Days in a Row Posted: 06 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT Jared Hess’ 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite is a heartwarming and slyly absurd twist on the teen-comedy canon, featuring some memorable quotes (“Gosh!”) and lovable characters. The man you’re about to watch also happens to appreciate Napoleon Dynamite — particularly the scene in which Jon Heder’s Napoleon performs an elaborate and nerdy dance routine at school. It might be 10 years too late to hop on this bandwagon, but YouTube user ProjectOneLife threw caution to the wind and filmed himself doing the dance for 100 days straight. It was a bucket-list item for ProjectOneLife, and he wanted to do something different than the overdone take-a-photo-of-yourself-every-day project. We’ll take it — although... 'Coherence' Trailer: Here's the Right Way to Make a Low-Budget Sci-fi Movie Posted: 06 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT The trailer for Coherence doesn't want to tell you too much about the movie, so we won't either. But here are the basics: a meteor passes over Earth the same night a group of friends are having a dinner party. As it passes overhead, the power goes out, plunging the house and neighborhood into darkness. The group decide to send some people to the one house down the street that still has its lights on, only to discover...well, we won't say, but that's got you hooked, doesn't it? There's a reason Movies.com is quoted as saying Coherence is one of the best science fiction movies in years. This is a smart, resourceful, idea-based movie, and our own Jacob Hall really dug it at its world premiere at Fantastic Fest last year (where that quote in the trailer is taken... Hide Your Daughters! 'Spring Breakers' Is Getting a Sequel Posted: 06 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT Spring break really is foreverrrr — as evidenced by the news that there’s going to be a sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 satire about the latest MTV generation all grown up. Last year, star James Franco told press, “I don’t think Harmony really wants do to Spring Breakers 2. He’s not the one who’s been talking about it.” Now comes word that Spring Breakers: The Second Coming (whaaat?) is going to be up for grabs at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — and the film already has a team of people lined up and ready to work on it. Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Small Apartments) will tackle the role of director, while Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) will script the project. We don’t know much... What It Looks Like When Your Favorite Movie Posters Come to Life Posted: 06 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT Here's one way to transform your standard movie poster into something you want to wrap your arms around and tuck into your forever box. As the below images prove, just the tiniest bit of animation sprinkled on an ordinary poster immediately makes it more alluring. Maybe we weren't in the mood to watch Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds before, but after seeing Tippi Hedren being attacked by a crazed flock of black birds on a continual loop we're jonesing for more evil from above. Is this the future of movie posters? Well, technically it's already happening. Studios have been releasing motion posters online for awhile now, but these are a little different. They're calculated and subtle; less "Look at me!" and more... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
