'Frozen' Is Now the Fifth-Highest Grossing Movie in Box Office History

Posted:

frozen highest grossing box office"Frozen" fans just can't "Let It Go": The animated Disney hit has now become the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time.

The musical has now made just under $1.22 billion at the international box office since its debut last November, cruising ahead of such films as "Iron Man 3," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," and "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" to land in the fifth all-time slot. It now sits behind only "Avatar" ($2.7 billion), "Titanic" ($2.1 billion), "The Avengers" ($1.5 billion), and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($1.3 billion).

While the massive success of "Frozen" was a huge surprise to Disney execs, the studio is capitalizing on the world's obsession with the flick, commissioning a Broadway musical adaptation and a special "Frozen"-centric Disney on Ice tour. Meanwhile, "Frozen" merchandise remains almost impossible to find; we can't imagine that its continued climb of the box office charts will slow demand anytime soon.

"Frozen" also boasts the title of most successful animated movie of all time, besting "Toy Story 3"'s take of $1.06 billion. Perhaps the only film that could stop this juggernaut is the yet-to-be-greenlit "Frozen 2."

Benedict Cumberbatch Not Considered Sexy Enough for 'Sherlock'

Posted:

benedict cumberbatch sexy sherlockIt may seem mad, but the BBC reportedly didn't think Benedict Cumberbatch was sexy enough to play Sherlock Holmes.

That's the word from "Sherlock" showrunner Steven Moffat, who recently revealed that he had to fight to secure his chosen lead for the series after BBC brass declared that Cumberbatch didn't have the looks to bring the legendary detective to life. Speaking at the U.K.'s Hay Festival of Literature and Arts on Monday, Moffat also said that the Beeb wasn't too keen on his selection of then-unknown (and future "Doctor Who" star) David Tennant to play the heartthrob Casanova in another series.

"They said of casting David Tennant as Casanova, 'Damn, you should have cast someone sexier,'" Moffat told the crowd. "With Benedict Cumberbatch, we were told the same thing. 'You promised us a sexy Sherlock, not him.'"

Anyone who's ever called themselves a Cumberbitch would dare to disagree, though we all know that Moffat's instincts were proven right. Cumberbatch has become an international star, with high-profile turns in films like "Star Trek Into Darkness," "12 Years a Slave," "The Hobbit," and "August: Osage County," and no end to his popularity in sight. And Tennant became a beloved member of "Doctor Who" lore, and now is set to star in the Fox show "Gracepoint," a remake of British series "Broadchurch," alongside "Breaking Bad" star Anna Gunn.

Of course, Moffat admits that Cumberbatch's stardom has become a bit...cumbersome (sorry), especially when it comes to slating new seasons of "Sherlock," which costars Martin Freeman as Watson.

"It can be quite annoying ... if you're scheduling a damn show," Moffat said of Cumberbatch's success.

"Sherlock" is expected to return sometime in 2016.

George Clooney May Get Married at the 'Downton Abbey' Estate (VIDEO)

Posted:

george clooney downton abbeyGeorge Clooney and his fiancee, Amal Alamuddin, may be set for a wedding fit for the Dowager Countess: The pair are reportedly considering getting married on the English estate where PBS series "Downton Abbey" is filmed.

The U.K.'s Daily Mail reports that Clooney and Alamuddin took a private tour of Highclere Castle -- the shooting location for "Downton" -- last week and were smitten with the property, which boasts 1,000 acres and a towering Victorian castle. According to the Mail, Alamuddin is a huge "Downton" fan, and Clooney arranged for a visit to the estate through his friend and "Monuments Men" costar Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Robert Crawley on the series.

While the Mail notes that Highclere does rent out its various rooms for private events, the setting doesn't come cheap, with certain parts of the castle costing upwards of $23,000 per night to reserve. Still, that's a drop in the bucket for A-lister Clooney, who just wants to make his bride-to-be happy, and also wants the exclusive event to be as private as possible.

"George loves the idea of marrying at the castle, because it's a glamorous place he could secure," a source told the Mail.

Highclere, located near London and 50 miles from Heathrow airport, has been owned by the Carnarvon family since 1679, and features an extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts as a nod to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon's role in the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922. We wonder how much extra the estate charges to incorporate mummies into its guests' events.

Charlie Cox Is Your New Daredevil in Marvel's Netflix Series (PHOTO)

Posted:

charlie cox daredevil marvelLadies and gentlemen (and Ben Affleck), meet Charlie Cox, your new Daredevil.

The "Stardust" (2007) and "Boardwalk Empire" actor will be the new face of the blind lawyer-by-day-superhero-by-night Matt Murdock in the streaming "Daredevil" Marvel-produced Netflix series due out next year.

The news comes amidst the news of former showrunner Drew Goddard exiting the series -- reportedly to take on "Sinister Six" directing duties -- and former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" writer Steven S. DeKnight taking his place.

"Daredevil" is scheduled to begin filming this summer, with the 13-episode series debuting on Netflix some time in 2015.

First Edgar Wright, Now Marvel Loses 'Daredevil' Showrunner Drew Goddard

Posted:

marvel daredevil drew goddardDoes Marvel have a problem keeping its creative talent happy?

Some would argue yes, following Edgar Wright's high-profile, abrupt exit from his adaptation of "Ant-Man," a project he's been shepherding almost singlehandedly since 2006. Now, another filmmaker is dropping out from another Marvel property, and it's raising more eyebrows.

On Saturday, one day after Wright's shocking departure, Drew Goddard left the "Daredevil" series set to debut on Netflix in 2015. While Goddard will still serve as a creative consultant for the show, that's a significantly diminished role for a man who was supposed to serve as showrunner, executive producer, and the writer-director of the first episode.

So what went wrong with Goddard? It's unclear, though Variety reports that he's set to focus on writing and directing Sony's upcoming "Sinister Six" Spider-Man villain spinoff for Sony. Maybe that project was a conflict of interest with Marvel Studios, which doesn't own the rights to Spidey?

Whatever the reason for Goddard leaving, it's certainly not looking good for Marvel, leading some to wonder if the studio is reverting back to safe, homogenized superhero choices in an effort to make more money, and keep existing franchises' future earnings consistent with past box office successes.

The studio once took a chance on unconventional filmmakers -- Joss Whedon and Jon Favreau, before "Avengers" and "Iron Man" -- and is taking a big gamble on the ragtag group at the heart of "Guardians of the Galaxy." But maybe they're worried that someday those chances won't pay off, and are now taking a firmer hand with directors' visions, leading some like Wright and Goddard to balk and walk.

Steven S. DeKnight (a writer for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," like Goddard, and onetime writer-producer on CW Superman series "Smallville") will take over "Daredevil" showrunner duties from Goddard. The 13-episode series begins shooting this summer, and will premiere sometime next year.

Just how different DeKnight's vision will be from Goddard's, we may never know.

Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane have great chemistry. And our Unscripted featuring the stars of "A Million Ways to Die in the West" is proof. Dirty, foul-mouthed proof.

The actors sat down for a lively conversation about hilarious dramas, hard-core drug use, inappropriately placed tattoos, and the great Liam Neeson -- among other things... Just stop reading about it and watch it.

"A Million Ways to Die in the West," co-starring Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman, and Giovanni Ribisi, hits theaters Friday, May 30.

5 'Mad Men' Spinoffs We Would Totally Watch

Posted:

"Mad Men" aired its spectacular Season 7 mid-season finale on Sunday, making the show's 2015 end date even more real and even more of a bummer. What will life be like without Don Draper and company?

And now dreams of a possible spinoff have been pretty much dashed, too. In an interview with Deadline, creator and writer Matthew Weiner revealed that he's not working on any follow-up to the beloved AMC drama.

"I am not planning a sequel and I do not have my foot deep in anything else," he explained. "I love that people are trying to project and guess what the storytelling is. I'm writing the finale today as I was yesterday and it's set in stone."

But we can pretend, right? Maybe he'll see this, get inspired, and reconsider?

Here are 5 "Mad Men" spin-offs we would like to see go down after its series finale:

1. Sally: On My Own Terms
Picture this. Sally Draper, now 17, sets out on her own in the summer of '71. She's finally free of Betty's grasp and doing it her way. Perhaps she gives it the old college try at Vassar or Berkeley. Maybe she moves in with 3 spunky pals in a San Fran apartment. Bottom line is: more Sally.

2. Peggy and Julio Down By The School Yard
Peggy adopts her neighbor Julio so he doesn't have to go to (no!) Newark. This is sort of an oddball buddy comedy, but also a coming-of-age tale for both of them. Julio learns a new lesson each week, while Peggy embraces her maternal side. There's a laugh track, but it's only tongue-in-cheek, guys.

3. Megan Takes Hollywood
It's kinda like "Entourage," except in the 1970s with a female perspective. Watch as Megan navigates the trials and tribulations of tinsel town, with the support of her wacky manager, sultry BFF, and voice-of-reason hair stylist. Check out her failed auditions for "All in the Family" and "The Partridge Family."

4. Funnies Business
Lou Avery quits advertising and gets serious about his cartoon strip, Scout's Honor. Somehow he convinces (bribes?) Stan to team up with him with him through a Jerry Maguire-style exit speech, and they start their own company, going from the comic section of the paper to world comic book domination.

5. Francine Hanson: Three Phones, No Secretary
The adventures of Betty's old friend, Francine, and her life as a travel agent in Westchester County. But maybe she's not just a travel agent. Maybe she's booking top secret missions for the CIA, all while maintaining a proper facade and putting food on the table for her family. She will leave her husband when he "just doesn't understand" and engage in some scandalous international affairs.

Honorable mention: The procedural Ginsberg, PsyD. Michael Ginsberg left the psych ward, but came out the other side and now solves white collar crimes with his knowledge from being "in the loony bin." He does not work with computers.

Who would you like to see get a "Mad Men" spinoff?

This Exclusive 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' Preview Is Chock Full of Dragons (VIDEO)

Posted:

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - Dragons and Riders

While 2010's "How to Train Your Dragon" focused heavily on the relationship between Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon, Toothless, its follow-up lets other characters get in on the fun, too.

In a new featurette from "How to Train Your Dragon 2," premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, the film's stars -- including Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, and Craig Ferguson -- discuss their characters' interactions with their respective dragons, and how each one represents what Blanchett calls a "symbiotic relationship."

Interspersed with clips from the film, the actors note how the film's dragons are direct reflections of their trainers. Ferrara says her character Astrid's dragon, Stormfly, is Astrid's "friend, partner, [and] confidant, and they put each other's lives in their hands."

Of "Dragon 2"'s expanded focus on a host of the winged creatures, Ferguson says that the audience is in for a treat.

"It's a whole new world of dragons," he said. "We really just scratched the surface [in the first film]."

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" hits theaters on June 13.

Don't Worry, Edgar Wright; Joss Whedon and James Gunn Have Your Back

Posted:

joss whedon james gunn edgar wrightAfter Edgar Wright's abrupt departure from "Ant-Man" last week, two other Marvel-affiliated filmmakers have offered their support for the director.

Both "Avengers" helmer Joss Whedon and "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn took to social media in the days since Wright left "Ant-Man," addressing Wright's exit while staying even-handed enough to remain on Marvel's good side. Gunn was the more neutral of the two, posting a note on his Facebook page that equated Wright and Marvel's relationship to that of mutual friends that the director loves equally, but who ultimately were just not the right fit for one another.

Gunn wrote:

Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they're amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn't it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren't meant to be together - not because there's anything wrong with either of them, but they just don't have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don't make each other happy. Although it's sad to see them split, when they do, you're surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.

It's easy to try to make one party "right" and another party "wrong" when a breakup happens, but it often isn't that simple. Or perhaps it's even more simple than that - not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn't mean they're not wonderful people.

And that's true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn't a person, but I think you get what I mean.

Whedon, meanwhile, didn't say anything at all; instead, he chose to speak through a photo. The director posted an image to his Twitter timeline of him lifting up a Cornetto (an English ice cream treat and a reference to Wright's Cornetto Trilogy films), his head bowed.

The photo certainly seems to indicate that Whedon is on Wright's side in his dispute with Marvel, though obviously Whedon also wants to remain in the studio's good graces, since he's in the middle of directing the sure-to-be-massive "Avengers: Age of Ultron," and no doubt would like to stick around for a third chapter. Perhaps it's just a salute of solidarity to a fellow creative who, unfortunately, didn't get to see his vision through this time around.

Wright, for his part, seems to be taking things in stride, though he couldn't resist having his own Cornetto-themed fun. In a since-deleted tweet, the director posted a photoshopped image of sullen-looking silent film star Buster Keaton clutching the frozen novelty, along with the label "selfie." (Vulture has some analysis of the significance of the snap.)

While we're sad that Wright won't become part of the Marvel family, we're glad to see that his fellow filmmakers have his back. Also, now we really want a Cornetto.

David Schwimmer Helps Solve Stabbing Case in New York City

Posted:

2013 NBC Upfront Presentation Red Carpet Event

David Schwimmer has already proven himself to be a good "Friend" thanks to his stint on the long-running NBC sitcom. Turns out, he's a pretty good neighbor, too. The New York Post reports that the actor is helping police solve a stabbing that took place near his New York City home on Memorial Day.

According to the Post, a drunken brawl between an alleged pimp and prostitute took place in the building next to Schwimmer's East Village townhouse early Monday morning, with the two men breaking through a glass door and one getting stabbed in the face. The stabbing victim -- the alleged john -- was taken to the hospital, while his assailant ran off; a third man was also arrested in connection with the incident.

Since police only had the word of the victim to go on, they needed more evidence to support his story, and noticed a security camera set up outside Schwimmer's home. Schwimmer showed police the tape the same day, and allowed officers to take it as evidence, which the Post reports will most likely be played in court.

The actor's cooperation with authorities signals a welcome shift in his relationship with fellow residents of his East Village neighborhood. In 2010, Schwimmer purchased a 160-year-old townhouse that he then proceeded to gut and renovate, setting off neighbors who were angered over the changes to the historic structure. (And inspiring one to spraypaint "Ross Is Not Cool" on the property when work began in 2012.)

"Four years ago, I would say David Schwimmer was the least popular guy on the block with the construction and all," neighbor Jayson Fillermutter told the Post. "But he has turned out to be a decent neighbor, and I am glad to hear he helped the cops with that stabbing."

It seems that Schwimmer really will be there for you after all.

These Photos of Cate Blanchett and Toothless at Cannes Are All Kinds of Adorable

Posted:

cate blanchett toothlessThe addition of Cate Blanchett to "How to Train Your Dragon 2" was a stroke of genius. Not just because it classes up the cast with an Academy Award winner, but because, if it didn't happen we would never have been able see this glorious photo of the gorgeous actress kissing the movie's signature dragon, Toothless.

The actress was on hand at France's Cannes Film Festival on May 16 to premiere "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and have a little fun with life-size version of everyone's favorite Night Fury on the red carpet. It's pretty much the most adorable thing you'll see today, and it is, perhaps, our favorite moment from all of Cannes.

Co-stars America Ferrera, Jay Baruchel, Djimon Hounsou, and Kit Harington were there too -- but that's not as important as perusing more photos of Blanchett having way too much fun with Toothless in the photos below.

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" opens in the U.S. on June 13.

Macaulay Culkin: 9 Crazy Facts About the 'Home Alone' Star

Posted:

Macaulay Culkin Facts
Arguably the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple, Macaulay Culkin is back in the spotlight. The actor and artist has been performing in an avant-garde cover band "The Pizza Underground" since the beginning of 2014, however, recently, audience response hasn't been that great for Culkin and co.

The band -- which takes classic rock songs and turns them into pizza-themed anthems -- played a few shows stateside before taking their talents to the U.K. At the Dot to Dot Festival Sunday in Nottingham, England, the comedy cover band was met with heavy boos and even had beer thrown at them. After dodging pints and playing three songs, "The Pizza Underground" opted to (understandably) end their set and exit the stage.

Even more than 20 years after "Home Alone," the actor's never failed to pique our interest. From his cheesy cover band to his relationships, here are 9 things you probably never knew about Macaulay Culkin.

1. In 1998, Culkin wed Rachel Miner when they were both 17. After two years of marriage, however, the couple called it quits.

2. He was in a long-term relationship with Mila Kunis from 2002 to 2010. Kunis is reportedly engaged to Ashton Kutcher, while Culkin is dating former "All My Children" actress Jordan Lane Price.

3. The actor made a cameo appearance on "WWE Raw" in 2009, in which one of the wrestlers was defeated by a "Home Alone" inspired gag.

4. John Hughes wrote "Home Alone" (1991) with the young actor in mind after they worked together on "Uncle Buck" (1989).

5. Culkin was the first child actor to receive one million dollars for a single movie. The film, "My Girl," also features his first on-screen kiss.

6. During the height of his success, Culkin became close friends with Michael Jackson, and has always maintained their relationship was completely platonic. The actor is godfather to two of Michael Jackson's kids, Prince Michael and Paris Jackson.

7. In 2004, the actor was arrested for marijuana possession in Oklahoma City. After eventually pleading guilty, he got off with no jail time.

8. In 2012, Culkin turned his New York apartment into a painting workshop. At around the same time, he was spotted around the city looking unwell and emaciated.

9. Before breaking out in "Home Alone," Culkin appeared in a 1988 episode of the action series "The Equalizer" as a kidnapping victim. A big screen adaptation of "The Equalizer," starring Denzel Washington, is set to be released in September 2014 -- with a sequel already in the works.

'True Detective' Season 2 Will Feature Three Leads

Posted:

true detective season 2Way to throw us a curveball! Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of HBO's "True Detective," just divulged some juicy tidbits about the highly anticipated second season of the crime drama.

On the To The Best of Our Knowledge public radio program, he revealed that next season will revolve around three leads. And it will take place in California. Interesting...

Pizzolatto explained:

Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California -- not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California -- and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in Season One.

We've already made our dream team casting wish list for next season, but perhaps it's time to add a third person in the mix. Which trio of actors would you like to see on the case in Cali?

Bill Murray Invades Bachelor Party, Surprises and Delights Complete Strangers

Posted:

bill murray bachelor partyThere's a fine art to dealing with the hoi polloi when you're a fancy famous person, and now that smart phones and the Internet are everywhere, you never know what could turn into the YouTube clip of the week. There's also a fine art to approaching a celeb in public who's just trying to go about their daily business and maybe doesn't want to stop and chat because they're having a bad day or really want a snack or are otherwise human beings.

However, Bill Murray is one of those folks whose public shenanigans never fail to delight. Seriously, the only reason this baby is crying is out of joy! Bill Murray loves karaoke with strangers! He just cannot have enough fun, and dammit, we love that about him.

But does he give good advice when it comes to matters of the heart? Um, well, his big advice to the groom is for the cheering, perhaps inebriated dudes at the bachelor party who are contemplating the institution of marriage. As he notes, Murray has some experience with this himself.

"Take that person and travel around the world. Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world, and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of, and if when you come back to JFK [airport], when you land at JFK, you're still in love with that person, get married at the airport," Murray advises. Plus, this was after Murray politely declined the drinks the guys had sent over and, when asked to "come up and say a few words for [the groomsman]," Murray demurred.

Then again, we're not so sure we really want to take advice from Bill Murray on love and marriage given his track record. As the kids say, your mileage may vary.

'The Bachelorette' Week 2: Who's Up, Who's Down, Who's Out

Posted:

This week was a busy one for our fair maiden of Atlanta, ADA Andi Dorfman. Yup, it was time to get to datin.'

Here are the highlights from week 2's rose filled extravaganza:

-Andi and Eric headed on a one-on-on to the beach and played around in the sand. But wait, there's more! They hopped in a helicopter (this is "The Bachelorette," after all) and flew off to a snowy mountaintop to get private snowboarding lessons.

-Andi's second one-on-one was with farmer Chris. They went off to the races and bet on some horses while decked out in "40s glam," as Andi called it. Then they were treated to a private concert -- a classic "Bachelor / "Bachelorette" move.

-There was a group date where the rest of the suitors were forced to perform as exotic dancers for Andi's viewing (and judging) pleasure. But it was for charity, you guys. Nick S. dressed like a stripper robot which (spoiler alert) didn't work out in his favor...

So, who made it, who got cut, and who are the current frontrunners?

Who's out: Craig, who got way too drunk at one point and totally made a fool of himself. Andi was NOT impressed. Nick S, the stripper robot. Carl the fireman, who we didn't see much of anyway.

Who's up: Andi wasted no time giving Eric a rose after their adventurous date. She also obviously has the hots for Marcus, so we think we'll be seeing much more of him. Nick V, who got the first impression rose last week, got back on Andi's radar after making his own date card. Andi also said she was impressed by Brian after they had a little chat.

This week's MVP: Chris. His date with Andi showed his sweet, sensitive, and committed side. He made Andi believe in the whole process again after the drunk Craig debacle. He also got the first kiss of the season.

Don't count this guy out: Josh M. He and Andi just click and, um, they totally kissed too. He got all honest with her about not being stereotyped as an athlete and they had a moment. Let's keep on eye on him, shall we?

More info, please: There hasn't been much Cody, Tasos, Brett, Marquel, Dylan, Patrick, Andrew, Ron or J.J. action yet. Bradley the opera singer serenaded Andi to a luke warm clap, but he made it through! We'll have to wait and see what these guys have to offer...

Come back next time to see who's up, down, and out on Season 10 of "The Bachelorette."

'Edge of Tomorrow' Reviews Are in and They're Tantalizingly Good

Posted:

edge of tomorrow reviewsThe trailers for "Edge of Tomorrow" look cool as heck, but let's just admit it: We're all a little bit skeptical about a new Tom Cruise action movie, especially one that's been bouncing around since 2010 or so.

But not so fast! The embargo has been lifted on "Edge of Tomorrow," and so far the reviews have been really positive. It was a smart move on the studio's part to let journalists start sharing their opinions with readers well in advance of the movie's June 6th premiere. That's the same weekend that "22 Jump Street" comes out, and it looks like "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Godzilla" will still be strong competitors at the box office. If the Internet could have damaged Cruise's career, maybe it can bring him back, right?

Here are just a few tidbits from tried and true sources.

Meredith Woerner at io9 enthused, "SEE THIS MOVIE. GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE IMMEDIATELY. 'Edge of Tomorrow' is just a g*****n delight. I felt alive and pumped when I left the theater, and so did the other batch of critics who followed me. I want to see it again, right now. You will have fun."

Kate Erbland at GeekNation wrote, "Kate Erbland wrote, "Meet 'Edge of Tomorrow,' your new favorite summer blockbuster, a clever combination of existing property (a graphic novel), big time star power (Tom Cruise), and just plain entertainment value (it has bang for your buck, and then some)."

Germain Lussier over at Slashfilm wrote, "There is so much to like about Doug Liman's 'Edge of Tomorrow,'" adding that "Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt both bring a grounded, confident charisma to their roles. and Liman's direction mixes the biggest scope imaginable with beautiful, quiet, intimate moments. The film is almost amazing."

Over at ScreenCrush, Mike Ryan referred to it as "the best movie of the summer season so far" and "certainly the most fun."

It's been a long time since Tom Cruise has been this funny and, frankly, confident. Plus, some of the ways that Will is killed in this movie are downright hilarious - especially after it becomes a nonchalant afterthought that he sometimes has to be killed in order to restart the day to continue his training. Plus, it's nice to watch Cruise play someone who at first is basically a coward, opposite Emily Blunt's no-nonsense hero."

Yep, rumor has it that Emily Blunt steals the show from Cruise as the cool-as-a-cuke soldier who keeps killing Cruise's character until he can get it right. Erik Davis at Movies.com noted that of its many cool attributes, "Edge of Tomorrow" is "a summer movie where a woman is the ultimate action hero." "When was the last time someone had to teach Tom Cruise how to be a badass, and that someone was a female?" Indeed!

Even mainstream industry sites like The Wrap and Variety praised it. The Wrap's Alonso Duralde wrote, "It's a familiar sci-fi mashup, but director Doug Liman knows how to find the fun and the thrills in this tale of an alien-fighting soldier who lives the same day over and over again." Variety's chief film critic Justin Chang wrote, "[T]his enjoyably gimmicky entertainment is not only one of Cruise's better recent efforts, it's also arguably the most purely pleasurable film Doug Liman has directed in the 12 years since 'The Bourne Identity.'"

But, wait! There's more!
In short....
"Edge of Tomorrow" opens June 6.

What's It About? Just how far would you go for a dare? David Koechner ("Anchorman") plays a super rich dude who's looking for some cheap thrills at the expense of a couple of guys who need cash. Pat Healy ("Compliance") and Sara Paxton ("The Innkeepers") co-star.
Why We're IN: This disturbing indie got great reviews, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you like your gore with a side of sly political commentary, this could be your jam.

Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"The Life Aquatic"
What's It About? Bill Murray stars as Steve Zissou, an oceanographer who's making a documentary about his hunt for the Jaguar Shark, which made a snack out of his old partner. He's joined by a ragtag gang played by Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, and other Anderson all-stars.
Why We're IN: This Criterion package includes audio commentary, a making-of doc, interviews, deleted scenes, and cool inserts full of illustrations and other goodies.

New on DVD and Blu-ray
"A Birder's Guide to Everything"
What's It About? Kodi Smit-McPhee ("Let Me In") stars in this coming-of-age movie about a teen coping with the loss of his mother and his father's pending remarriage. David (Smith-McPhee) and his friends, who are bird-watchers, take off to find a rare bird with help from a bird expert played by Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley. Life lessons unfold, obviously.
IN or OUT: It's a fairly toothless coming-of-age movie, but it got pretty good reviews.

"Endless Love"
What's It About? A romance between a bad boy (Alex Pettyfer, "Magic Mike") and a rich girl (Gabriella Wilde, "The Three Musketeers") is nothing new, and this remake definitely didn't win over any fans.
IN or OUT: If you're dying for this sort of thing, maybe check out the original with Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt, with bonus Tom Cruise, and James Spader.

"Gambit"
What's It About? Ethan and Joel Coen wrote this remake about a heist gone awry, but that doesn't mean it's any good. In fact, that makes it almost worse! Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, and Alan Rickman star.
IN or OUT: Out, unless you're a Coen brother obsessive.

"Journey to the West"
What's It About? Actor and director Stephen Chow ("Kung Fu Hustle," "Shaolin Soccer") shares writing and directing credits with Derek Kwok on this fantastical action flick about a Buddhist monk trying to protect his hometown from demons.
IN or OUT: Critics loved Chow's combination of comedy, action, and fantasy.

"Suits: Season Three"
What's It About? "Suits" is a drama that airs on USA Network. Patrick J. Adams co-stars as a college dropout who manages to get himself involved with one of the fanciest law firms in NYC.
IN or OUT: "Suits" doesn't get a lot of love from TV critics, but it's got a strong fan base and is actually pretty good.

New to Blu-ray
"Red River" (Criterion)
What's It About? This classic Howard Hawks Western drama stars John Wayne as a rancher and Montgomery Clift as his adopted son as they go on a cattle drive to Red River. The trouble they encounter has less to do with dairy cows than dads and sons.
IN or OUT: This package includes spiffy restored versions of the original theatrical release and a longer version, trailers, and more. If you snag the dual-format release, you'll also get a paperback copy of the out-of-print novel on which the movie is based.

"Sleepaway Camp" (Collector's Edition)
What's It About? It's an '80s slasher about some maniac on the loose at, well, a sleepaway camp.
IN or OUT: Fans will definitely want to add it to their bloody collection. It has several audio commentary tracks, interviews, and even a little retrospective with its cast and crew.

Jim Carrey Delivers Emotional, Hilarious Commencement Speech (VIDEO)

Leave it to Canadian funnyman Jim Carrey to spice up a graduation ceremony.

Carrey received an honourary degree from Iowa's Maharishi University of Management this past weekend, and in his classic style delivered a speech that combined his trademark humour and sincerity. The audience is pleased, as you can see in the video (above).

"I am here to plant a seed today, a seed that will inspire you to move forward in life with enthusiasm of hearts and a clear sense of wholeness," said Carrey. "The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root or will I be sued by Monsanto?"

Carrey was famously close to his late father, Percy Carrey, whom the actor frequently refers to. The family actually lived out of a van in the Toronto area at one point after Percy lost his job.

"I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you could fail at what you don't love, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."

Carrey joins a long line of celebrities who've recently made commencement speeches.

'The Equalizer' Trailer Proves Denzel Washington Is Still a Badass (VIDEO)

Posted:

equalizer trailerDenzel Washington is many things: Oscar winner, respected actor, producer, and -- as the new trailer for "The Equalizer" proves yet again -- a world-renowned badass.

The trailer starts off with Washington encouraging co-star Chloe Grace Moretz ("Carrie"), who is looking a lot older than her 17 years (complete with wig!), to change her ways and straighten up her life. The thing is, it's just not that simple. She's all twisted up in the Russian mob and she can't get out.

After Washington witnesses her getting beaten by the aforementioned mob, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Let the badassdom begin.

From what we can tell, this movie will be filled with righteous retribution, impressive takedowns, explosions, and enough tension that you'll need help prying your fingers from your seat.

(It should be noted that "The Equalizer" is based on the '80s TV series of the same name, starring Edward Woodward. It should also be noted that Denzel doesn't appear to be as snappy a dresser as Woodward.)

"The Equalizer" hits theaters September 26, 2014.
