These Movies Should Be Remade As Often As Possible Posted: 13 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT People say Hollywood has a problem with originality. That's probably true. But some narrative concepts are too good for just one film to hog. While originality certainly has its place, there's something to be said for revisiting stories that work in hopes of reclaiming that glory or using it to come up with something new with a change of scenery. The following movies offer perfect examples. Godzilla No one should ever say no to more giant-monster movies, and Godzilla is the king of giant monsters. So why not have as many Godzilla movies as possible? They won't all be good. Most of them won't even be watchable. But every time a good Godzilla comes out it will be worth all the lame Godzillas we have to sit through to get there. Rio Bravo... New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Her' Warms Your Heart, Plus: A Slew of '80s Gems Hit HD for the First Time Posted: 13 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT Her - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Spike Jonze Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson There are so many different things to love about Her, but since everyone already focuses on things like the love story and our increasing relationships with technology, let's spend a little bit talking about the most incredible part of the film: the performances. Joaquin Phoenix is just mesmerizing in this role. The charm he radiates is so natural and so disarming that every smile lifts your heart, and every coy tick pulls at your heartstrings. It's not only one of the best of his career (and so radically different from all his other roles), but it's one of the most perfect performances in years. Then there's Scarlett Johansson who deserves every... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Geek Beat: 10 Movie Monsters That Should Fight Godzilla Posted: 13 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT They call Godzilla “The King of Monsters” for a very good reason. Over the last 60 years, the oversized lizard with the atomic breath has battled countless monsters of various sizes, shapes and conspicuous martial arts abilities – and regrettably, I've spent far too many hours of my life watching rubber-suited actors perform half-assed judo on each other amid a miniature model of Japan's capital city. Okay, that last part was a lie – I don't regret any of it. I've been excited about Godzilla's return to the big screen courtesy of director Gareth Edwards (whose 2010 film Monsters was one of my favorite movies of the year) for awhile now, but the relatively recent confirmation that the massive lizard will be battling a host of... On today's episode: -- The guys discuss the pros and cons of that first image of Ben Affleck as Batman in Batman vs. Superman (May 6, 2016). -- Is Neighbors the comedy to beat this summer? Erik certainly thinks so. -- The guys offer up spoiler-free thoughts on Godzilla (May 16) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 23). -- Finally... Watch Joaquin Phoenix Accidentally Drop 'Her' Off a Building in This Behind-the-Scenes Clip Posted: 13 May 2014 03:35 PM PDT One of the absolute finest movies of 2013 hits Blu-ray and DVD today. Of course we're talking about Her, Spike Jonze's beautiful, heartfelt, loving and exquisitely acted look at relationships and how they can be (re)defined in this modern era where technology is so interwoven with every aspect of our daily lives. The Blu-ray not only sounds and looks great (it may not be flashy, but Her has some of the best cinematography of 2013), but it contains a really neat making-of feature that shows off how Jonze went about creating the on-set atmosphere for his movie. It's a cool, quirky documentary that's a welcome alternative to most making-of segments that are just filled with talking heads, and we've got a funny clip from it to share with you that... Posted: 13 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT Today we’ve got the inside scoop on the beloved Star Wars character Wedge Antilles, a rumor about Adam Driver’s role in the upcoming sequel, and the coolest goalie masks outside of the NHL. We kick things off with the latest rumor about actor Adam Driver and Episode VII. Since his casting was announced, everyone assumed the Girls actor was going to be a villain. Not so fast… Jedi News has a source who says that given all the script changes and updating of the story for the new film, Driver will likely not be quite as villainous as first expected: “He will be playing the son of Han and Leia, and it seems he will be seduced to the Dark Side, and a main plot point for the movie will be their attempt to rescue him." Being rescued seems a bit different... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

H.R. Giger Passes Away at 74; Watch a Rare Documentary on the Legendary 'Alien' Designer Posted: 13 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT A legend has passed. Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor and set designer H. R. Giger has died at 74. Famous for his incredible, Academy Award-winning designs for Ridley Scott’s Alien, Giger found international fame for his biomechanical artworks that featured terrifying depictions of human bodies transformed into strange and sexual machines. Giger took inspiration for his dark, perverse designs from the surrealist art masters, his own dreams (he suffered form night terrors) and the literary works of H.P. Lovecraft. Giger brought his visions to life for the masses when he created the now famous Giger bars in Switzerland. Two bars in New York City and Tokyo were shut down, but an exciting announcement earlier this year suggested that plans were underway for a Giger...
