First 'Star Wars' Spin-off Film Goes to 'Godzilla' Director Gareth Edwards Posted: 22 May 2014 08:04 PM PDT Hot off the monster box office opening of Godzilla, director Gareth Edwards has landed a highly coveted gig. He will direct the first Star Wars stand-alone film, based on a screenplay by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), due in theaters on December 26, 2016. Edwards made his directorial debut with the atmospheric and dreamy Monsters, which imagined a near future in which an alien invasion has changed the landscape of civilization. He put his creative stamp on the new version of Godzilla, rebooting the the creature to such great effect that two sequels have already received the green light. Here's the 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Postcredits Stinger Explained Posted: 22 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT Stay through the credits of X-Men: Days of Future Past and you will be treated to one final scene. However, if you don't read comics and your only exposure to the X-Men is what's in the movies, you may be left asking yourself, "Wait, who is that guy?" Let's explain. Warning: The following will explain exactly what's in the postcredits stinger of X-Men: Days of Future Past. It reveals nothing else about the movie, but consider this your spoiler warning. The scene is of a robed figure standing on a sand dune in the desert, a legion of worshippers chanting below him. His arms are raised and in the distance we see him building one of Egypt's great pyramids with nothing but the power of his mind. As the camera moves from his back to his front, it's... The Last Sci-fi Blog: Why Harrison Ford Should Say No to 'Blade Runner 2' Posted: 22 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT Welcome to The Last Sci-fi Blog, our biweekly column about all things science fiction in movies. Last week, one of the weirdest press releases in a long time hit the Internet: the producers of the upcoming sequel to Blade Runner were seeking Harrison Ford's involvement. They weren't announcing his casting. They weren't announcing that they were in talks. They were announcing that they wanted him to join the cast, talking up the screenplay and sounding more like desperate teenagers trying to get a girl to go on a date than film producers hoping to make a follow-up to one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. But let's not spend any more time making fun of their press release. Instead, let's focus on why Harrison Ford should decline their... 5 Reasons Why 'Edge of Tomorrow' Is the Event Movie to Beat This Summer Posted: 22 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT In a summer stuffed with event movies meant to dazzle with larger-than-life effects while extending already established franchises, Edge of Tomorrow slides in as one of the season’s wild cards – an explosive sci-fi action movie billed as “Groundhog Day inside an alien invasion,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in giant, weaponized suits. Will it get lost among its more buzzed-about reboots and sequels, or will Edge of Tomorrow quietly edge out its competition in terms of story, characters, action and general entertaining badassery? Oh, it’s most certainly the latter. Edge of Tomorrow leaps onto the summer-movie playing field with ferocious tenacity, expertly balancing large-scale action with humor, tension, courage and the kind of flawed heroes... The Roger Ebert Doucumentary 'Life Itself' Gets a Wonderful Trailer Posted: 22 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT This April marked the one-year anniversary of Roger Ebert’s passing. The film community pushes on, but it just isn’t the same without him. Champaign, Illinois recently celebrated his memory at Ebertfest — the annual film festival founded by the wonderfully snarky film critic. And we now have a trailer for the biographical documentary based on the writer’s 2011 memoir, Life Itself. Hoop Dreams director Steve James heads up the production, with Martin Scorsese as executive producer, which is set for a theatrical/On Demand/iTunes release on July 4. The Pulitzer Prize-winning critic’s life is explored through touching stories, video excerpts (featuring late friend and critic compadre Gene Siskel from At the Movies) and more. Michal Oleszczyk, writing for... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
See How Godzilla's Awesome New Roar Was Created Posted: 22 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT Godzilla stormed the box office last weekend. The reboot of the famous monster movie, which first roared into theaters back in 1954, features a revamped radioactive creature with a brand new roar. The original roar is one of most famous sound effects in the history of cinema. In the ‘50s, the filmmakers attempted to invent Godzilla’s howl by mixing animal sounds together, but it was unsuccessful. Japanese composer Akira Ifukube had the idea to use a musical instrument instead. The iconic roar was born when a leather glove coated in pine-tar resin was rubbed against the string of a double bass. It took the new team of filmmakers, under director Gareth Edwards’ supervision, to come up with a new roar — which you can learn about in this great video...
