Maybe Adam Driver Isn't the Villain in 'Star Wars: Episode VII' After All Posted: When word first came out that "Girls" star Adam Driver would be in "Star Wars: Episode VII," everyone assumed he'd play the villain. But a rumor from Jedi News claims that Driver isn't the villain -- rather, he's the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia! Calm down ... it's just a rumor. Director J.J. Abrams has been keeping details about "Episode VII" on lockdown. When the cast was announced recently, there was no mention of characters or roles. Still, Jedi News' insider source says Han and Leia's son "will be seduced to the Dark Side, and a main plot point for the movie will be their attempt to rescue him." If this is true, it aligns with the disclosure that Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is a "co-lead" of the movie, along with three of the younger actors. "Star Wars: Episode VII" hits theaters December 18, 2015. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sunday's 'Game of Thrones' Really Should Have Ended Like This (VIDEO) Posted: Who wasn't moved, angered, and ultimately shocked by Tyrion's speech on Sunday's (May 11) "Game of Thrones"? People who are dead inside, that's who. If you saw it, you know that something unexpected and amazing came out of the imprisoned Lannister's mouth. If you didn't see it, we're not going to spoil it for you. For those who saw it and want to see an alternate take with an even more unexpected twist, watch the video below. You won't be disappointed. "Game of Thrones" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO. [h/t Gawker] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Ben Affleck's 'Sad Batman' Meme Gives 'Sad Keanu' a Run for Its Money (PHOTOS) Posted: Yesterday, Zack Snyder tweeted the first photo of Ben Affleck in the Batman costume -- alongside the new batmobile, no less -- and it set the internet aflame (the image can be seen directly below). The batsuit has been picked apart for its vein-heavy construction and bulky appearance, but it's the seriously brooding Affleck that has really caught the internet's attention. Some creative geniuses have run with the idea of a depressed Batman and given birth to the "Sad Batman" meme -- and it's pretty hilarious. Below the original image, you'll find some of the best Sad Batman photos and GIFs. "Batman vs. Superman" is slated for a Summer 2016 release. You know, in case you're looking for something more than a meme. [h/t SlashFilm] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
White Men Directed Nearly All of This Summer's Movies Posted: White men can't jump, but they can direct blockbuster movies. It's the same old Hollywood story: The overwhelming majority of this summer's movies were directed by white men. Only two were directed by black men and one by a woman, according to a report from The Wrap last month. It's really a shame, laments The Wrap writer Martha Lauzen, that while Hollywood is willing to gamble on young, up-and-coming white male directors, they don't do the same for women. She points out that Marc Webb was tapped to direct "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" after he'd helmed just one small indie pic, "(500) Days of Summer." And "Godzilla" director Gareth Edwards was given that huge movie after working on one small movie and a few television documentaries. "Maleficent" is Robert Stromberg's directorial debut. "If their films are even moderately successful, they will be elevated to 'boy wonder' status," Lauzen notes. But it's not as if there aren't any women directing the small, indie flicks that propelled Webb and Edwards to bigger flicks. Women comprised 26 percent of indie directors -- but just six percent of 2013's top-grossing films were overseen by women. As Lauzen argues, "Even women with proven track records as directors are left off lists of possible helmers for studio features, while males who have not directed a feature or have directed a single feature are considered." Hollywood has long been a boys' club, but it's 2014, for crying out loud. Isn't it time for some "girl wonders"? 'Pitch Perfect 2' Gets a Very Welcome 'Sons of Anarchy' Infusion Posted: Katey Sagal is used to the cutthroat world of biker gangs; now, she has to get used to the cutthroat world of a cappella gangs. The "Sons of Anarchy" star is joining the cast of "Pitch Perfect 2," as announced by director Elizabeth Banks: Sagal will play the mother of new cast member Hailee Steinfeld. We hope she gets to sing, as Sagal boasts a set of great pipes She's touring with her band to promote her new album, "Covered." The 'Point Break' Remake Finds Its New Bodhi in Edgar Ramirez Posted: Surf's up for Edgar Ramirez. Variety reports that the "Carlos" star has been tapped to replace Gerard Butler in the upcoming remake of the '90s classic "Point Break." He'll play Bodhi, the role inhabited by the late Patrick Swayze in the original. Butler apparently had to drop out due to "scheduling conflicts," and producers Alcon Entertainment quickly jumped into action to fill the gap. "We consider Edgar one of the finest actors in the world today, and we are thrilled he will be creating a fresh new take on the iconic character of Bodhi," Alcon principals Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a statement. Ramirez will star opposite Luke Bracey, who takes on the role of Johnny Utah (played by Keanu Reeves in the original). Johnny is an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates a crime gang made up of surfers. Hope Ramirez enjoys this once in lifetime opportunity (and one last wave). Which 'Game of Thrones' Star's Celebrity Sister Turned Down a Cameo? Posted: Incest is kind of no big deal in the world of "Game of Thrones," but for singer Lily Allen, the ick factor was too much to take. The songstress revealed in a Reddit AMA that she turned down the opportunity to play Yara Greyjoy, the sister of Theon Greyjoy -- played by Allen's real-life brother, Alfie (above). "I've been asked to do a 'Game of Thrones' cameo, they asked me if I'd be interested in playing Theon's sister, and I felt uncomfortable because I would have had to go on a horse and he would have touched me up and sh--," she said. "Once they told me what was entailed, I said no thanks. I would be open to doing a musical cameo like Sigur Ros, though." Allen is referring to a season 2 episode in which Theon hitches a horseback ride with an unknown woman. Only after fondling her does she introduce herself as his sister! Awkward! When Lily Allen turned the role down, it went to actress Gemma Whelan. No doubt both brother and sister let out big sighs of relief. A Reddit User With Two Months to Live Needs Your Movie Suggestions Posted: There are movie lovers, and then there are movie lovers. An anonymous Reddit user posted in the /r/movies subreddit that he has been given about two months to live by his doctors, and he asked the Reddit crowd to give him some suggestions on what to watch. "Well I can't do anything else, really. I'm trapped in my house," he wrote. "I'm 43 and I have a serious heart disease, I've been feeling worse and worse for 2 years now. Currently I'm taking a lot of meds, and I feel okay. I have my friends and girlfriend, they are supporting me. Without them, I would have given up a long time ago," he wrote, later adding, "You guys made my day. Thank you so much. I've seen a lot of these movies, but there's still plenty to watch. I promise I will enjoy my time and try to watch as much as I can," the user posted. There are a ton of great comments, and not just about movies. Many of the suggestions were classics, but others were more existential in nature, like "The Fountain," "Ikiru," and "2001." There were also plenty of votes for comedies, romances, and TV shows like "Six Feet Under" and "The Sopranos." The one that's currently most upvoted is a great suggestion for everyone, really. "Ask each of your friends to bring over a movie that they would want you to watch and sit and watch it with them. That way they each get to share a bit of themselves with you while you both spend some time together. Also, they should know what you like better than us!" Another commenter wrote, "Dude, I have Stage IV sarcoidosis in my lungs, skin, left optic nerve, and brain. 5 and a half years ago I was told I had 5 years, tops. This ornery fart proved them wrong. I've accepted it, too, but still try to be as happy and upbeat as I can...so hang tough. I don't judge others cuz everyone is fighting some sort of battle. Films? Goodfellas and anything with Gary Oldman in it." Someone else offered to share his/her Netflix account. Has someone been cutting onions in the Moviefone offices again? Follow the thread here. 7 Ridiculous Reality TV Family Fights We Can't Stop Watching (VIDEO) Posted: By now you've probably seen a little video going around where Beyonce's sister Solange attacks Jay-Z in an elevator. The New 'Deliver Us From Evil' Trailer Is Very 'Sinister' (VIDEO) Posted: The past few summers have been great times to get scared at the movies, what with offerings like "Sinister," "The Purge," and "The Conjuring" freaking people out in theater across the country. This trailer for "Deliver Us From Evil" looks like we won't be getting a respite from onscreen scares any time soon - and that's a good thing. "Sinster" co-writer/director Scott Derrickson is at it again with this story about a cop and a priest and some good, old-fashioned exorcisms. New York City isn't an easy place to live in the best situation, but Officer Ralph Sarchie's beat is filling up with some seriously devilish activity. Played by former comedian Eric Bana, Sarchie is your average cop who puts his job ahead of everything else, and he's not one for any of this supernatural nonsense. That is, until he meets a priest named Mendoza who convinces him that it's not just an uptick in your regular NYC activities; there's something, dare we say, sinister about it all. Edgar Ramirez, who is currently in negotiations to replay Gerard Butler in the remake of "Point Break," plays Mendoza, who is not a cookie cutter exorcism-obsessed priest. Nope, he's a bad boy priest! And he's gonna do bad boy priest things while Ralph does his bad boy cop things, and together they can rid the city of its demonic scourge before Ralph's daughter and wife get sucked into the mix. "Deliver Us From Evil" is based the book "Beware the Night," which coincidentally was written by a guy named Ralph Sarchie. Oh... Now we get it. It's based on a true story. The director and stars appeared at WonderCon for a panel hosted by Nerdist's Chris Hardwick, and they took great pains to describe how Derrickson and Sarchie scared the poop out of them all with footage and other things from their research. "[Derrickson] had access to some materials, along with Ralph Sarchie, the real guy, that they shared with me that I really wish I hadn't seen." Bana said, admitting that it caused him some sleepless nights. Munn wanted to see the footage of NYPD exorcisms too as soon as she heard how scared Eric was, but boy was she sorry. "I watched them and he was right. I watched half of one and I cried and then I kept the lights on and then they're still on," she told the audience. Hey, some of us have had our lights on since "Sinister" came out, thank you very much. "Deliver Us From Evil" opens July 2. The 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' Season 6 Trailer Is Pretty Much Amazing (VIDEO) Posted: It's weird to think "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" is already on its sixth season. It seems like just yesterday that they were having their very first Botox party! Believe it or not, the new season will be upon us this July, so Bravo has unveiled the full cast line-up and what sort of life dramas they'll be poorly coping with in the upcoming episodes. Naturally, Teresa Giudice and her hubs Joe are back, along with their rather significant legal problems. Melissa and Joe Gorga are also returning, and it seems like Melissa's drama with Teresa and the other wives could be overshadowed by similar fraud problems with the Feds. (NB: Joe has gone into the sanitation business, which is not at all suspicious or cliché.) Teresa's old BFF Dina Manzo is also returning to the show, so we'll get to see what she's been up to since we last saw her on the first season. We also meet Melissa's old friend Amber, who was diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer while Melissa wasn't paying attention. And then there are the identical twins, Teresa Aprea and Nicole Mauriello. This trailer has everything. Bank fraud, legal drama, a crying teenager, crazy outfits, a little girl calling someone a "butthole," people dressed up as sexy nurses and firefighters, more crying, wine, an unhealthy amount of tanning, and much more. "RHONJ" premieres Sunday, July 13 on Bravo. [Via The Wrap] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Final Season of 'Two and a Half Men' Will Air This Fall Posted: It's almost time to bid adieu to our pals on "Two and a Half Men," which will end its seemingly endless run after its twelfth season. There have been a lot of ups and downs with the cast of "Two and a Half Men" over the years, not the least of which involved its former co-star Charlie Sheen, who was fired mid-season in 2011. Things seemed relatively copacetic after Ashton Kutcher was brought on to mitigate the damage, but then co-star Angus T. Jones went on a pretty spectacular religious rant about the show, begging people to "[p]lease stop watching it and filling your head with filth." That didn't really stop viewers from tuning in each week to see the ongoing hijinks of Jon Cryer, the Kootch, and series newcomer Amber Tamblyn, so it was up to CBS to finally do the honors and pull the plug. CBS's Nina Tassler told reporters at the TV upfronts this week, "Chuck Lorre is creating a season-long event. We did very well last year with announcing final season of 'How I Met You Mother' here, too. Chuck is very psyched about this; he's got some great ideas and very big surprises." What could be a bigger surprise than Charlie Sheen appearing on the show for one last sleazy hurrah? Sheen only called Lorre a number of rather colorful things and almost caused the show to be canceled, but let's not dwell. Or the fact that they literally killed him off. This is TV, where dreams can become reality and Duckie can grow up to become his own worst nightmare. Anyway, we're sure they've got some neat tricks in store for viewers, so tune in! CBS Drops 'How I Met Your Dad' Posted: People were all up in arms about the ending of "How I Met Your Mother," and the news that there would be a spin-off with Greta Gerwig was met with quite a lot of skepticism. Well, all you crankypants people will be relieved to know that CBS passed on "How I Met Your Dad." For now. According to CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler, "There were elements on the pilot that didn't work out. We tried to work out about redoing the pilot. That's not happening right now. Sometimes you run into these kind of issues and you hope they can resolve themselves in that time frame." Although CBS felt "repiloting was in the best interest of protecting the creative elements of the show," it seems that Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, and Emily Spivey didn't agree. But not so fast! There's still hope we can someday see Greta Gerwig dance the Sambola on primetime TV while Meg Ryan narrates. If 20th Century Fox was game, the show could land elsewhere, or given how "heartsick" Tassler is, there could still be some bargaining happening behind closed doors about doing an entirely new pilot. Perhaps they're testing the waters to see how viewers react to the news; if there's enough hubbub, it would certainly give CBS incentive to negotiate, and it would give the series creators leverage if they had other networks sniffing around. After all, no matter how fans felt by the end of "HIMYM," it was a franchise that just wouldn't quit; why wouldn't a show with a similar premise, led by the lovely Gerwig, be able to find a home on another network that would give them the leeway to do something new? Perhaps "How I Met Your Dad" wasn't formulaic enough to be a sure thing for CBS. Whatever the case, the "Frances Ha" co-writer and star will surely land on her feet. TV's loss is film's gain, and vice versa. [via Vulture] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
This Exclusive 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' Preview Will Make You Shed a Happy Tear (VIDEO) Posted: One of our most hotly anticipated summer movies this year is, without a doubt, "How to Train Your Dragon 2." The original film, released in the spring of 2010, was a soaring adventure and arguably the greatest animated feature from DreamWorks Animation. And from everything we've heard, the sequel is going to top it. Which makes us even more jazzed to be able to debut an exclusive featurette from the film, entitled "A Family Reunited." "One thing I wanted to introduce into this movie is Hiccup discovers this mysterious vigilante who is, in fact, his mother," writer/director Dean DeBlois says on the featurette. DeBlois co-wrote and co-directed the original film with Chris Sanders (the pair were also responsible for Disney's modern classic "Lilo & Stitch"). We get glimpses of Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), the young Viking hero from the first movie and his trusty dragon Toothless, as they encounter this new character, named Valka, who has spent the last couple of decades keeping dragons safe from harm. And she might have a familiar voice, especially for those "Curious Case of Benjamin Button" fans out there. Yep, none other than recent Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett voices Valka. "I wrote the character with Cate Blanchett in mind," DeBlois confesses. And the rest of the cast, from Gerard Butler, who plays Hiccup's meaty father Stoick the Vast, to Baruchel himself, seem genuinely grateful to be able to play against so much emotional material, especially in an animated kids' movie about dragons. But it's not all family hugs and tearful get-togethers; the clip also showcases footage of the new bad guy, Drago (Djimon Hounsou), a dragon hunter with designs on world domination. This dude looks scary. And it looks like it's going to take all of the good dragons and Vikings, banding together, to take him down. "How to Train Your Dragon 2," which premieres on Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival (hey, not too shabby), opens everywhere June 13. If 'Game of Thrones' and 'Law & Order: SVU' Had a Baby, It Would Look Like This (VIDEO) Posted: "Game of Thrones" has been mashed up with "Law & Order: SVU," and the results are amazing. Inspired by the procedural elements of the last episode of GoT (read: trial), a magical Internet elf created an L&O-inspired opening credits sequence for the HBO hit. We're pretty impressed by it, mostly due to the inclusion of Ser Pounce and a mandatory appearance by Ice-T. So, when can we catch the all-weekend marathon on TNT? Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson on Movie Monsters, 'Avengers 2,' and Sequels Posted: This weekend's "Godzilla," from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros, is a big movie. It's a massive reboot based on the classic Japanese character of Godzilla, a towering behemoth that rises out of the ocean and destroys many, many cities. But at the heart of this new "Godzilla," directed by "Monsters" filmmaker Gareth Edwards, is a very human story, concerning an army technician (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who has just come home to his lovely wife (Elizabeth Olsen) while also dealing with his crackpot father (Bryan Cranston). The monsters may offer the most dazzling set pieces but it's the humans who will really get you invested. We got a chance to sit down with Taylor-Johnson and Olsen to talk about what it was like to try and find emotional realism in a film about radioactive dinosaurs, whether or not they would be back for a sequel, and what personal connection they had to the character. Of course, we also try to pressure them for details about their next project together -- a little Joss Whedon art-house romp called "Avengers: Age of Ultron." While they don't give a lot away, there are some intriguing bits they let slip... How sick of each other are you? Olsen: Not! It's like seeing your brother! Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, I must say when I found out that we were going to work together again it was a delight... Olsen: There's a potential for disaster. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, it made me feel safe and it was like, Well that's good. Were you fans of the Godzilla character? Olsen: I have a history of my brother going, "Look, there's Godzilla!" [impersonates bad dubbing] And that's about it. He would just make fun of the dubbing. Taylor-Johnson: I don't have any history with it, really. Olsen: I knew it existed. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, I knew it existed, and if someone said "Godzilla," I'd say, "Yeah a dinosaur-y T. rex-type thing?" But I had it so wrong because I sat down with Gareth and he said, "You know why they created Godzilla?" And I said, "No, I don't actually." And he said, "It was just after the second World War and the Japanese needed a way to be able to vent. They weren't allowed to make any movies about WWII so they created this character of mass destruction. It's all metaphor." So it came from a really symbolic place. I was like, "That's f*cking impressive." Imagine how it must have felt for that movie to come out and change the way people saw things. And I think because of that, because it had such a huge message behind it, that he wanted to do the same but in today's society. So it was really intriguing -- his metaphor for it. Was that what got you hooked, Gareth's take on the character? Olsen: Yes, for sure. It was the grounding of the story and the true thing is that every good sci-fi movie or alien movie or whatever always has a larger metaphor and there's always more things to look into besides some monster coming in and destroying. And that is what roots it. It was a combination between that and Legendary, and just knowing you're in good hands and trusting Gareth's vision and taste. Gareth put together a teaser with Legendary almost three years ago for Comic Con, and it was in such great taste and it's a beautiful-looking film. Taylor-Johnson: It's amazing how classy and artistic he took it. Gareth already has a cinematic eye because with "Monsters," I thought, Man who shot that? Because it was really beautiful and handheld and I asked him about it and he said, "I've got a f*cked-up shoulder because of it." And I said, "Wait you were the camera operator on that movie?" He said, "Yeah, it was me and a camera and I did it on nothing." He's just an all-around great filmmaker who understands every aspect. And he's got a real great way of working with actors. He gave us time and we got to explore. I've never had a luxury of being able, especially on "Avengers." It's like, "Wait, we shot the whole scene?" Because they put four cameras on us at once and it's quick, quick, quick... Olsen: Yeah, not used to that. Taylor-Johnson: It's like, "I thought I maybe had a few other ways of doing that." And they're like, "Nope, done." May 2nd, 2015 -- the clock is ticking, guys! Taylor-Johnson: But they're shooting until August. How is "Avengers: Age of Ultron" going? Olsen: It's so fun. I'm laughing all the time. The crazy thing is that it's like, I'm throwing sh*t with my hands, that's cuckoo! But it's also like, We're saving lives. And it's very serious. There's always that reminder that it's very serious. Will you guys be in full costume by the end of the movie! [in unison] Olsen: Can't talk about it! [laughs] Taylor-Johnson: Can't say! We've seen enough of these movies to know that you're going to be in a suit by the end of it. Olsen: Well, we're not part of the team, so it's not the same thing... But you're new Avengers, right? Taylor-Johnson: Can't say. God, this is so frustrating. Olsen: But it's fun for us. But it's getting there? Olsen: Yes. So fun. Taylor-Johnson: Oh yeah. And I think Marvel and Legendary are very similar in that they're very similar. They're very big but they're also very boutique. Marvel is specific to their own characters and, because it's their own characters, they're protective of them. But they also want them to look great and they also care about them. They've got a backlog of knowledge... Olsen: And they just give it to you! Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, so you know you're in good hands. Olsen: It's the same thing with Legendary. You feel like you're in really safe, good hands with them. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, you talk to Thomas Tull [CEO of Legendary Pictures] and he's just a really big fan of movies. Yes, he's got all these huge projects -- Batman, Superman, Godzilla -- but he gives them to really talented, interesting directors. Olsen: And he doesn't step on their toes. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, he's not pushing them around trying to edit their movie. Godzilla was obviously not on set. What was it like finally seeing the movie? And how did Gareth explain what was on screen? Olsen: Gareth explained it very technically. He had it all on his computer in pre-viz. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, and also there was a lot of artwork around you. Olsen: Yes, and that's something you can work with. You could choose to use it or not. Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, it's not a movie where you're working with an animated pet or something where you have to constantly interact with. You're just reacting. Olsen: Have you ever worked with an animated pet? Taylor-Johnson: No. But I imagine it'd be a f*cking nightmare. Did anything surprise you about the final version? Taylor-Johnson: There's a scene towards the end of the movie where I'm looking at Godzilla, and when I finally saw it I was like, Whoa! I didn't realize his head was going to be that close and that big. Olsen: You didn't realize he was looking at you? Taylor-Johnson: I didn't realize he was looking at me! But I think that's why Gareth is so great. It's always evolving, even though you filmed it months before. Like he looked at it and he's like, "Maybe there's a connection there." So you give him so many variations on that because they're still considering all the possibilities. So you never know. I also thought he was about ten or twenty blocks down the road, not right f*cking there! Olsen: My biggest surprise was how much I liked Godzilla and how much I hated the MUTOs. I felt very bad for the people Godzilla was accidentally killing, but I feel like he had very good intentions. Taylor-Johnson: He's got to do what he's got to do! Olsen: He's restoring nature! Well, it seems nice because everyone was so upset last summer about "Man of Steel." Taylor-Johnson: Yeah, how many buildings did they go through? But you guys are actually giving screen time to the people who are being affected by these monsters. Olsen: Yeah, that was, for me, really my main part of the film. That was my piece of it. I was a piece of a very big puzzle. And I was holding down what was happening on the home front, so that was really important -- to put a lot of care into it. We're almost becoming numb right now to the riots in Ukraine because it's just statistics but if you heard one family's story, you'd have a whole new experience. So the goal was to have this huge world disaster and have this family who is having this one singular experience. It happens to be very important and prominent with getting Godzilla taken care of. But you want them to get together. You want to make sure you care about him getting home. Taylor-Johnson: And Gareth was very much about making it so that it's not just coincidence that you're always there. He wanted to really ground them in that work aspect of their lives and that it just so happened to be on the path and that it's all tied in to Bryan's character and Lizzie's character. He just wanted to follow Godzilla but through someone's perspective. So he was like, "How are we going to follow him from Japan to America?" That was nice because we had been introduced to Ken Watanabe's character and everything is interlinked really beautifully without being too on-the-nose. He gave us jobs that felt real and naturalistic. If Godzilla rises out of the ocean again, will you be back? Olsen: I would love to. I would love to see what that world would be like that they would create. Taylor-Johnson: I would be as well. Olsen: Especially if it's Gareth and the same gang. Godzilla needs to fight another big monster of his caliber. Did he talk to you at all about that? Olsen: No. Did he talk to you about it? I'd like to know. "Godzilla" crashes into theaters May 16.
