New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Grand Piano' Delivers in a True, Hitchcockian Way Posted: 20 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT Grand Piano - Magnolia - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Eugenio Mira Cast: Elijah Wood, John Cusack, Kerry Bishe, Tamsin Egerton, Allen Leech. Full cast + crew When people say something is Hitchcockian, they're usually not using the reference properly and simply describing a suspenseful thriller. Grand Piano is Hitchockian in the truer sense: It's a meticulously crafted piece of filmmaking that's wholly committed to a highly specific, somewhat outlandish premise. Elijah Wood plays a world-class pianist who takes the stage for a highly anticipated comeback performance, only to discover that if he fails to play the music precisely as it was written (a nearly impossible feat in this case), then a sniper hidden in the theater will open fire. See How the Intense Hotel Fight Scene in 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' Was Shot Posted: 20 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT Jack Ryan isn't like other cinematic CIA agents. Sure, he used to be a Marine, but he's hardly an expert in martial arts. He's not James Bond or Jason Bourne. He doesn't kill people for a living. He's a desk-bound analyst who happens to find himself deployed in the field after he uncovers a plot to demolish the American economy. And that's why newly minted Jack Ryan Chris Pine's first fight scene in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is so damned intense. The Kenneth Branagh-directed film is available in digital HD today, three weeks ahead of its debut on Blu-ray, DVD and other VOD services. And to celebrate we've got a clip from the film's bonus features that shows how the hotel fight scene was carefully constructed to basically be the opposite of the... Listen to the Unused, Rejected Score for Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey' Posted: 20 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT 2001: A Space Odyssey is a stunning, laconic view of space travel — which is why music plays such a critical role in the effectiveness of the picture. Director Stanley Kubrick used iconic classical music tracks to accompany his near-silent epic, but Johann Strauss II and the Vienna Philharmonic’s rendition of Richard Strauss tone poem weren’t Kubrick’s first choices for the picture. Early in the film’s production, Kubrick commissioned Dr. Strangelove collaborator Alex North to create the soundtrack for 2001. That composition is currently available online via Filmmaker IQ. The website advises: This theme music made its public debut in early 1993 as part of the Telarc compilation CD Hollywood’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, by Erich Kunzel and... Early 'Godzilla' Concept Art Reveals Crazy Monster Battle on Top of Alcatraz Posted: 20 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT click images to enlarge It's amazing how fast some of these giant effects-driven movies come together these days, from start of production to the time they arrive in theaters. The Avengers: Age of Ultron began production like a month or so ago, and it hits theaters in less than a year! Yet while production schedules are tightening as audiences demand a constant rotation of "event" movies, some others are taking their time to get it just right. Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is one of those movies. A new version of Godzilla has been in the works as far back as 2004, when plans were in place to make a 3D Godzilla short for IMAX theaters. Eventually the concept evolved into a feature-length movie, and in 2010 Legendary Pictures officially acquired the rights... Watch: 'Godzilla' Director Gareth Edwards Explains How They Filmed the Awesome Skydiving Scene Posted: 20 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT "It was a little bit like a symbolic thing of angels descending into hell. That whole Dante's Inferno side of things-- we were trying to capture that vibe." There was incredible imagery scattered all over Gareth Edwards' Godzilla movie, which crushed the box office this past weekend to the tune of $93 million, immediately igniting sequel talks. But perhaps none were as memorable as the halo jump, where a group of soldiers--including Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Ford Brody--leap out of a plane and slowly descend on a city overrun by giant, destructive monsters. In this week's "Anatomy of a Scene" via The New York Times, Edwards takes us through the scene explaining how they shot it. "This really works well in IMAX 3D -- you really feel... Huge Horror News: 'Halloween: The Complete Collection' Is Coming to Blu-ray This Fall Posted: 20 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT We’re still months away from Halloween, but yesterday’s big announcement from Scream Factory is sure to get you in the holiday mood in the middle of May. 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' Trailer: It's Like James Bond, but Way More Ridiculous Posted: 20 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to action movies. He gave the world the hyperviolent Kick-Ass and delivered X-Men: First Class, which was the refreshing kick the franchise needed to get back on track. And next up he's got Kingsman: The Secret Service, which turns Colin Firth into an action star. Yes, the stuttering, fancy fellow from The King's Speech can also kick a whole lot of ass, apparently. It's movie magic! Firth stars as an old-school James Bond-esque spy who begins training his nephew, a hipper, more street-smart chap, in the family business. That sort of conflicting personalities setup has all the makings of a cheeky, '90s buddy action comedy, but as you can see from the film's first trailer, the payoff looks way cooler than it sounds on... Alfonso Cuarón May Direct the 'Harry Potter' Spin-off 'Fantastic Beasts' Posted: 20 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT The Potterverse is aflutter after news that author J.K. Rowling’s 2001 book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being adapted for the big screen. Equally awesome is that Rowling herself will be penning the screenplay. This will be the first film in a megamovie series planned by Warner Bros. that is set in the world of Harry Potter, 70 years before the boy wizard and his pals arrived on the scene. Now comes word from Nikki Finke that Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón may be heading up the spin-off, which will be focused on "magizoologist" Newt Scamander — the fictional author of the book. He’s reportedly “deep in talks” to direct Fantastic Beasts. Potter fans adored Cuarón’s 2004 chapter in the boy-wizard film...
