Vin Diesel Says Groot Helped Him Grieve for Paul Walker

Posted:

vin diesel paul walker grootVin Diesel has talked openly about the sorrow he felt following the sudden death of costar and friend Paul Walker in a car accident late last year, though his recent revelation about what helped him heal from that tragedy may surprise some fans.

During a Facebook Q&A promoting the upcoming Marvel flick "Guardians of the Galaxy," Diesel answered a fan query about the challenges of getting into character as Groot, a talking tree monster, with a touching story about dealing with the loss of his friend while on the "Guardians" set.

"It was very personal," Diesel wrote of the role. "[I]t was the month after the accident happened with my brother Paul Walker and it was the first time I had worked since. Although it was challenging, just to get back to work was therapeutic- especially as Groot. There was an innocence about the character that was just refreshing- and it may have been more challenging under other circumstances, but at that time, it was very therapeutic."

The character is known for only saying one phrase -- "I am Groot" -- over and over again, and Diesel said that he and director James Gunn had fun playing around with different inflections and cadences to nail the character's intentions and emotions in each scene.

"[I]t was amazing to go in there and to work with someone who wanted to explore the character- we wanted each 'I am Groot' to mean something different," Diesel wrote. "It reminded me, as an actor, how much we can do with so little- and if we're passionate about it, good thing can come from it."

"Guardians of the Galaxy," which also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Dave Bautista, opens on August 1.

Jimmy Kimmel Told People 'Godzilla' Was a True Story and They Believed Him

Posted:

Believe it or not, there are a few people who think Godzilla is real -- and to our horror/delight, they were willing to talk about it on TV.

As part of his ongoing Lie Witness News series, Jimmy Kimmel deployed a street team to ask people a ridiculous question, and this time it centered on the big green guy of the moment. Kimmel said that in honor of "Godzilla" raking in $93 million on its opening weekend, he posed this query: "Considering 'Godzilla' is based on the true story of the giant lizard attack on Tokyo that killed more than 100,000 people in 1954, do you think it is wrong that Hollywood glamorizes this event for entertainment?"

"I will admit, not too many people bit on this one," Kimmel remarked, before gleefully adding, "but some of them did."

And oh, how they did. While a couple responders, to their credit, seemed skeptical about the veracity of the question, others dove headfirst into long-winded answers that are cringe-inducingly awkward.

One woman called the "real" Godzilla attack "a travesty" and said that the movie was "disrespectful" to those who were affected. Another said she would support Congress authorizing $600 million in funding for the Navy's "anti-reptile capabilities" to do "anything we can ... to protect our nation."

A young man who also professed his belief in the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot said he thought Godzilla and other creatures like him were the result of global warming.

"There's so many mysteries under the sea," he said.

Watch the clip below and see how far you get before you smack your forehead in disbelief. We bet it won't take very long.

Is the Joker in 'Batman vs. Superman'? Here's the Photo Sparking Rumors

Posted:

batman vs superman joker rumors"Batman vs. Superman" cinematographer Larry Fong set off internet alarm bells recently after he posted a photo of a playing card on the film's set, instantly fueling rumors that the Joker will be making an appearance in the "Man of Steel" sequel.

But just how much stock should superhero fans put in Fong's photo? At this point, it seems not much.

As Fong and another Instagrammer hinted at in the pic's comments section, the card is most likely sticking out of a piece of foam from a green screen set, which landed there after Fong performed a trick in homage to a card throwing master named Ricky Jay. Fong even posted a link to a video showing Jay perform some well-known tricks.

Still, that didn't stop people from speculating that the cards were on set precisely because a new Joker is, too, though Fong dismissed such talk. (He later tweeted about the brouhaha, too.) Could the cinematographer's denials be misdirection away from spoilers? Or is this just another example of the rumor mill getting over-excited about the mysterious "Man of Steel" follow-up?

We're leaning toward the latter, though we suppose director Zack Snyder and co. could still have some tricks up their sleeve. We'll know for sure when "Batman vs. Superman" opens on May 6, 2016.

'12 Years a Slave' Mannequin Stirs Up Controversy at UK Grocery Store (PHOTO)

Posted:

12 years a slave display mannequin controversyA U.K. store landed itself in hot water recently after it promoted the DVD and Blu-ray release of "12 Years a Slave" with a mannequin mimicking protagonist Solomon Northup.

The Independent reports that numerous shoppers snapped pics of the odd display at a Sainsbury's in Oxford, England, which featured a large poster, bright stickers with the movie's price -- and for some unknown reason, a mannequin dressed in a torn shirt and pants meant to resemble the clothes Northup wears for most of the Oscar-winning film. A twig was also sticking out of a pants pocket.

Shoppers were offended by the odd, inappropriate sight (stickers on the mannequin seemed to suggest that clothes were for sale, too), and quickly complained to management, which has since removed the display and issued a mea culpa to customers.

"We can only apologise," Sainsbury's said in a statement. "It's been taken down from the Heyford Hill store and clearly should never have gone up in the first place."

Clearly, indeed.

You Guys, Molly Ringwald Is in the 'Jem and the Holograms' Movie

Posted:

molly ringwald jem and the holograms movieTalk about 1980s star power. After adding Juliette Lewis to the cast, "Jem and the Holograms" has also secured Molly Ringwald for a role in the live action adaptation of the classic animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Ringwald is joining the "Jem" ensemble in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. She'll star alongside Aubrey Peeples ("Nashville"), who's playing Jerrica Benton, a.k.a. Jem, and Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, and Hayley Kiyoko, who round out the rest of Jem's band, the Holograms. Ryan Guzman is playing Rio, a love interest for Jem.

While the original cartoon was set in the '80s (the series ran from 1985-1988), this film version is being described as a modern take on "Jem," which will focus on the titular character's search for her mother, and a musical-themed adventure through Los Angeles. The film is already shooting in L.A.

Jon M. Chu is directing, and Ryan Landels is penning the screenplay. A release strategy has yet to be determined.

Now You Can Watch the 'Girl Meets World' Opening Credits

Posted:

We knew "Girl Meets World," the upcoming spinoff of classic ABC series "Boy Meets World," would feature a bunch of references to the original show (hello, Cory, Topanga, and Mr. Feeny!), and now the show's opening credits are getting in on the nostalgia action.

Disney just released a clip of the show's credits and new theme song, and there are a plenty of Easter eggs for longtime fans of "Boy," including a quick shot of Topanga (Danielle Fishel) sporting the same crimped hair, choker, and babydoll dress look she used to rock as a middle schooler. The credits' graphics also have some fun mimicking their predecessor, with a paper airplane zooming through several shots that harkens back to a similar gimmick used for "Boy." Even the logos for both shows are alike (the titular characters are supposed to meet the world, after all).

The theme song is fun, too. It's bouncy and hopeful and seemingly very fitting for the youthful audience (and maybe some twenty- and thirty-somethings looking to relive a childhood favorite) that the show is trying to court. All in all, we're pleased that Disney seems to be making a concerted effort to make both groups happy, and are looking forward to seeing how the continuing saga of the next generation of the Matthews family plays out.

"Girl Meets World" stars Rowen Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Peyton Meyer, August Maturo, Ben Savage, and Danielle Fishel. The show premieres on the Disney Channel on June 27. You can watch the first few episodes on Disney's WATCH Disney Channel streaming service tomorrow, May 21.

Watch the Very NSFW Red Band Trailer for 'La Bare,' Joe Manganiello's Male Stripper Doc (VIDEO)

Posted:

la bare red band trailer joe manganiello"Magic Mike" was based on the real-life experience of star Channing Tatum, who had once worked as a stripper. The world of male strippers was so intriguing that fellow cast member Joe Manganiello decided to go deeper and make a documentary about it.

"La Bare" started out as some footage that Manganiello and his brother Nick shot for a potential reality series. But as he spoke to real strippers and delved into the scene at the La Bare club in Dallas, he turned it into a feature-length documentary.

A new red-band trailer flashes a few glimpses at the bright lights, screaming women, muscled men, and the money-making owners that make up the industry.

"Men want to see naked women. What women want is the show," one person notes. And what a show it is!

But it's not all fun and hot, sweaty bodies. Manganiello also chronicles the tragic death of one of the dancers, a real-life "Magic Mike."

"La Bare" opens in theaters on June 27.

Reporter Makes Epic, Celebrity-Packed Wedding Video for His Wife (VIDEO)

Celebrity Packed Wedding Video
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. And something with a lot of celebrity power!

Sky News reporter Joe Michalczuk made the best wedding video of all time for his wife, Jenny (no, seriously, he puts yours to shame) by enlisting the help of Hollywood's biggest stars. While on the job interviewing movie stars, Michalczuk got actors including Kate Winslet, Samuel L. Jackson, Zac Efron, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz to wish his bride congratulations.

Some of the stars took the opportunity to do a little ribbing. Jackson got in a dig at another reporter who had mistaken him for Laurence Fishburne.

"Jenny, Laurence Fishburne wishes you a happy wedding day," Jackson said. "Don't forget the prenup."

Hugh Jackman's send-off was the best, though. "Jenny, you left Sydney. You left all of those incredible Australian men," Jackman said, shaking his head. "For this."

Congrats, Jenny and Joe!

The 'Magic Mike' Sequel Will Be 'Absolutely Insane,' Says Channing Tatum

Posted:

channing tatum magic mike sequel xxlIf "Magic Mike" got you hot and bothered, bring some ice packs with you when the sequel hits theaters. Star and screenwriter Channing Tatum promises that it's going to be "exponentially crazier."

In an interview with GQ, Tatum reveals a few details about the sequel, which is rumored to be called "Magic Mike XXL." It will be based on his experiences at stripper conventions, like one he attended in Raleigh, NC.

"The women would come from miles and miles around. Then you lock the doors and you say all bets are off. It gets zany and crazy, and it's a wild ride. It's an incubator for insanity," he says. "It doesn't matter almost what you do onstage."

He adds, "If you've been to one, you know how crazy it gets, and now pour kerosene on that. You've seen 'Magic Mike' -- now multiply that. Mob mentality. It's just exponentially crazier. I thought it was absolutely insane."

Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh also confirmed that the latter wouldn't be directing the sequel. Instead, his producing partner Greg Jacobs will take the helm. But Soderbergh will still be involved - he'll be the film's director of photography and editor.

"I want to be a part of it. I want to be in the band, but I just don't want to be the frontman this time," Soderbergh told GQ.

Leave that to Tatum.

Mel Brooks on 'Blazing Saddles' at 40, Richard Pryor's Genius, and Keeping His Edge at 87

Posted:

mel brooks blazing saddlesAt 87, Mel Brooks has lost none of his edge.

The legendary comic provocateur has phoned me from his Los Angeles office to promote the just-released 40th anniversary Blu-ray of his magnum opus, "Blazing Saddles," but before he submits to an interview, he quizzes me about Moviefone's unique pageviews and other Web traffic statistics, about which he knows more than I do. Having concluded that Moviefone is well-trafficked enough for him to talk to, he says, "Ask away, Susman!"

"Blazing Saddles," which made serious satirical points about racism while also making cinema safe for fart jokes, is certainly one of the most influential comedies ever made. Brooks believes it's the funniest film of all time (followed closely by his own "Young Frankenstein"), and he's still upset with the American Film Institute for disagreeing with him. He's making his case for the film with the Blu-ray (which contains a new making-of documentary, among other extras), as well as by trying to drum up interest in a "Blazing Saddles" musical, which could storm Broadway the way his stage versions of "The Producers" and "Young Frankenstein" did.

Among the worlds he still has left to conquer is stand-up comedy, at which he struggled half a century ago (though he notes that playing Greenwich Village clubs in the '60s afforded him an opportunity to rub shoulders with the great Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art painters of the day). Just this month, he began performing a one-man show at the Geffen Theater in Los Angeles, which he says may turn into an HBO special.

Brooks's undiminished skill at telling hilarious, edgy stories was certainly evident in our interview, where he discussed the rodeo-esque preview screening that saved "Blazing Saddles," his role in bringing together the Richard Pryor-Gene Wilder buddy-comedy team, how his own jazz drumming skills brought swing-band titan Count Basie into the movie, the infamous bean scene, and an encounter with Quentin Tarantino that shows just how far-reaching the impact of "Blazing Saddles" remains after 40 years.

Moviefone: What's new on the Blu-ray?

Mel Brooks: That's a good question. There's a great, great commentary by Mel Brooks. Just for that alone, it would be well worth the two bucks extra or whatever.

On television, there was no farting. It was just horses whinnying. And we show that, in the Additional Scenes. We show how stupid the television censors were about all the stuff that the head of Warner Bros. wanted me to take out, that I never took out.

Here's a great story. We had a screening at the Avco Embassy on Wilshire Blvd. here in L.A., and I said, "Let's really do it." We put a wooden railing outside, and we had about 20 cowboys tie their horses up there. In the lobby, we had a dozen steers, and they peed and shat all over the lobby. And we had tons of Raisinettes to sell you. I really did it up.

All the executives at Warner Bros. had seen the movie. And their head of domestic distribution, Leo Greenfield, God rest his soul, said, "Let's bury the movie. It's embarrassing. It's disgusting. We can't put the WB shield on this. Let's write off the $2 million budget. I've never done this before, but I beg you, let's bury this movie." And God bless him, John Calley, who's gone now too, said, "Let's have a screening."

Right from the first scene, they never stopped laughing. Me as the Jewish Indian, they went nuts. People were running up and down the aisles. Ted Ashley, who ran Warner Bros. at the time, took me into the manager's office, and he had a legal pad with notes, and he said, "Cut out the farting! That's out. Can't punch a horse. Can't hit an old lady! No sir! Can't use the N-word. Verboten! It's all out." He had 22 notes. And when he left, John Calley was with me, and I crumpled up the notes and threw them into the waste paper basket. We just went with the audience's reaction, which was stu-PEN-dous! The manager of the theater said he thought there was an earthquake, he'd never heard the place rock so much. And it went on to do exceedingly well.

The only thing that pisses me off is that the AFI, on their list of 100 funniest comedies, they call it No. 6. I think they have the Billy Wilder movie "Some Like It Hot" is No. 1. So I'm really pissed off about that. I think "Blazing Saddles" should be first, there should be five empty spaces after it, and "Young Frankenstein" should come after that. It's the funniest movie ever made in the history of celluloid film, in movie houses, and then in the history of $24 Blu-rays and DVDs. It is the funniest movie ever made in all the world. I know funny movies, so I know that "Blazing Saddles" is supremely the funniest movie ever made.

How did you come to hire Richard Pryor as the film's co-screenwriter?

He worked at the Village Vanguard in New York City. I worked at the Bitter End. We were both stand-ups, killing ourselves trying to get some laughs. We'd meet and have sandwiches and drinks later at Max's Kansas City. What a great place that was. Sitting to the right of us, Roy Lichtenstein. Willem de Kooning sitting behind us. Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers, [Robert] Rauschenberg was there, all these great artists. We were all struggling.

He was an old pal. So as soon as I read the Andy Bergman outline, called "Tex X" -- Calley thought it sounded like blaxploitation, so I finally came up with "Blazing Saddles," and everybody thought that was a great title -- I knew I needed somebody to validate the N-word, and the only guy I trusted was Richard. Any other black guy might have said, "No, no, never use it" or "You can only use it here." I knew if the rednecks didn't use it, we wouldn't have the arc, the come-uppance, where the bad guys lose. They had to use it or the picture wouldn't work.

But Richard did too much. I think he gave me too many yeas instead of nays. Every time I asked him if I could use the N-word, he said, "You must! You have to! It's imperative."

Right from the beginning, I wanted him to play the sheriff. And when Warner Bros. said, "No, he has a drug habit. We've done some research. We can't get insurance on Richard Pryor, blah, blah, blah." Some bullsh*t. I said, "Okay, that's the end of me. I'm not directing this movie. I quit." And Richard said, "No, no, no! I didn't get my last payment! Don't quit." So I stayed, and together we looked at a lot of guys, and finally we picked Cleavon Little. Richard really picked him. He said, "Look at that guy. He is really black. He would scare the sh*t out of the entire West. And he's about the handsomest guy I ever saw in my life. Lili Von Shtupp would really go for him."

"Blazing Saddles," then, is the first movie where Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder are credited together, even though they're not both on screen.

I started it all. They liked each other so much. I moved from Warner Bros. to Fox and worked with Gene on "Young Frankenstein." That's when we talked to the people at Fox about "Silver Streak" for Gene and Richard Pryor. "Blazing Saddles" wasn't out yet. They hired him well before the success of "Blazing Saddles."

Let me tell you something. I've done comedy all my life. I'm pretty damn good myself. I just did a one-man show at the Geffen Theater, and I was sensational. But nobody in the world was better than Richard Pryor for stand-up comedy.

In the bean supper scene, where the cowboys keep farting and farting, how did you know when enough was enough?

When we did the farting scene, the first couple of farts, the audience was like, "What? What?" It took five or six farts for the audience to get it. And then they went crazy. We could have gone on for ten minutes, but I decided we had enough laughs and had to get on with the movie. So the first one or two are not funny. But then, slowly and surely, there's acceptance, and then finally, enthusiasm.

How did you land Count Basie for the fanfare scene in the middle of the desert, where Sheriff Bart arrives in his fancy new duds?

I called him. He was a very bright guy. I'd met him before. He said, "Did Buddy [Rich] teach you to drum?" I said, "Yeah, how did you know?" He knew that I was a drummer, so he trusted me. And he'd seen "The Producers," and he loved it. I explained the movie to him, and he said, "Sure." I said, "Do me a favor. Try to get as many band members, even if they're no longer with you, that we would know from the '30s and '40s." So he did. He got the whole company.

His most famous record was "April in Paris." He suggested, "Let's do 'Paris,'" and he did the exact arrangement. He didn't have to because we had the original recording. He was happy to be there, up in the desert. It was amazing. We hung out together for a couple of nights. We had corned beef hash and brandy. And chili. And Cleavon was good, too. I said, "Cleavon, help me out with the Count." He stayed and kept company with us every night.

You've said in recent interviews that political correctness would make it impossible to release "Blazing Saddles" today.

I was wrong because "Django [Unchained]" made it. I think [Quentin Tarantino] used the N-word twice as much as I did. You have to know how. I saw Tarantino at a restaurant the other day, and he said to me, "If it wasn't for 'Blazing Saddles,' I could have never made, 'Django,'" and I said, "Come on, you would have made it anyway."

Do you think it's possible to make a movie comedy that goes too far?

I just don't like movies that try to be funny and aren't. There are no rules in comedy about what to say. It's how to say it. If you say it well, you can say anything. That show "The Book of Mormon," that's strictly taboo, but they did it so well that you just have to fall down laughing and stand up and applaud. So it's how you do it.

Why did you stop making movies?

Nobody came anymore. You reach a point -- you're hot, you're hot, you're hot, you're lukewarm, you're chilling, you're cold, you're out. The last three movies I made did not bring in a lot of customers. I did a movie that I think is one of my best, called "Life Stinks," and the subject matter and the title sent people away in droves. I did "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," but I didn't star in it, which was a mistake. And I thought, "If I'm not going to be super-successful at this, I'm going to do something else."

So I went to Broadway, and I was super-successful. "The Producers" won 12 Tonys and was the biggest musical in 25 years to hit the boards. So I was up again.

And now, I don't know, I'm just treading water. I'm doing pretty good. Here I am, being a stand-up comic again, after being at the Bitter End 45, 50 years ago, doing the circuit as a stand-up comic. Maybe you'll see it on HBO.

If I work on "The French Mistake" from "Blazing Saddles" -- remember that? The Busby Berkeley number? If I make that a big production number, maybe we can work our way back to getting "Blazing Saddles" on Broadway. It would make a very funny and very entertaining show.

I've never really gone away. I've found places to be famous again, to be successful again, to make a living again. I've never slunk away from show business.

Juliette Lewis Joins the 'Jem and the Holograms' Movie

Posted:

juliette lewis jem and the holograms movieTruly outrageous! Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis is joining the cast of "Jem and the Holograms," according to Deadline.

John M. Chu is directing the live-action version of the '80s cartoon classic about a music company owner who moonlights as the lead singer of a rock band. Aubrey Peeples is set to play Jerrica Benton aka Jem.

Which character Lewis will be inhabiting is still a mystery. Lewis is a talented singer who's fronted her own rock bands before. The easy answer is that she's playing Synergy, the computer/fairy godmother that helps transform Jerrica into Jem. Or perhaps Lewis is a part of the rival band, the Misfits.

Production on "Jem and the Holograms" is already underway, but no release date has been set.

'Frozen' Is Heading to an Ice Rink Near You

Posted:

frozen on ice"Frozen" conquered the box office, dominated the music charts with "Let It Go," and is preparing to take over Broadway, but why stop there? The animated musical blockbuster will continue its quest for world domination on ice!

"Frozen" will be adapted into a Disney on Ice tour, starting in September in Orlando, according to The New York Times. The show will feature 39 actors, 20 snow machines, and huge projection panels simulating the movie's mountain landscape.

An ice skating show makes perfect sense, considering "Frozen" is the story of an ice-wielding princess. "Frozen" fans can expect all their favorite characters, from Elsa and Anna to snowman Olaf to reindeer Sven.

Disney is scrambling to take full advantage of the movie's popularity. In March, it became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, earning over $1.2 billion worldwide. The soundtrack sold 2.7 million copies. Demand for "Frozen"-related apparel is so high, Disney is airlifting it from China.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday.

'The Bachelorette' Season 10 Premiere: Contestant First Impressions

Posted:

Do you smell that? It's the aroma of fresh cut roses ready to be handed out to eager suitors vying for the attention of one special lady. That's right, folks. "The Bachelorette" is back."

Season 10's main squeeze is Andi Dorfman, an assistant district attorney from Atlanta and fan fave from the infamous Juan Pablo season of "The Bachelor." Last night she met the 25 single guys looking for her love and began her (dare we say it?) "journey." (SPOILERS coming!)

We must say this season began on a somber note, as one of the contestants, Eric Hill, tragically died in a paragliding accident after filming his episodes. Host Chris Harrison explained in the prologue: "Eric passed away shortly after concluding his filming on this show. In the coming weeks, you will see that Eric was a vibrant man. Every day he impressed us with his passion and his courageous spirit. He will be greatly missed and we dedicate this season to him."

After that tribute, things kicked for the charming Ms. Andi, who we were reintroduced to. She hung out with her sister and said she "wanted to have fun" too many times to count. Time to cut to the chase.

It was what we were all waiting for: the moments she meets her limo dudes. Then she played some golf, ate cookies, and received a pair of pants, among other meet-cute activities. She was also interrupted by party crasher Chris Bukowski, a former contestant from Emily Maynard's season of the show, who had waited at the gates to meet her. He was turned away.

Anyway, back to the guys. Let's size up the current competition, shall we?

First, who got eliminated?: Jason, a doctor who used the unfortunate pick-up line "I think you have a fever because you look pretty hot." Rudie, an attorney who attempted attorney humor. Josh B., a telecommunication manager who said Andi "impressed" him last season. Mike, a bartender who tried to pretend the two of them were meeting in a "natural setting" even though there are clearly cameras everywhere and Chris Harrison was thirstily waiting in the wings. Steven, the "Cali boy" who works with snowboards. Emil, who told Andi his name was pronounced "anal with an m." Moral of the story: Don't do doctor, lawyer, or "anal" jokes when meeting "The Bachelorette."

Who looks like a frontrunner? Marcus, a sports medicine manager. Andi could not stop calling him hot. Nick V. a sales exec in polka dots who landed the coveted first impression rose. Josh M., a former pro baseball player, who Andi said was her type. Dylan, an accountant who vulnerably admitted he was nervous. JJ, a "pantsapreneur" with a snazzy bow tie. Marquel, a sponsorship salesman, who gave Andi a sweet cookie tasting.

Get more info and first impressions of the contestants who didn't get cut below, and stay tuned for more "Bachelorette" rankings and coverage as things heat up next week!
