What Comedic Actor Would You Like to See Give an Oscar-Worthy Dramatic Performance? Posted: 19 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT There are few comedic actors who are incapable of doing drama. After all, it's harder to do comedy. Also, a lot of great dramatic performances are achieved through the aid of great dramatic directors. Milos Forman can do amazing things with someone like Jim Carrey, and the same goes for Paul Thomas Anderson and Adam Sandler. Combine a star who is mostly known for wisecracks and slapstick with the right filmmaker and you see people like Jonah Hill and Mo'nique nominated for, or even win, Academy Awards. Hill's first encounter with Oscar came about thanks to Bennett Miller, who directed the Superbad funnyman in Moneyball. Now Miller has a new movie with its own awards buzz for another comedic actor in a serious role: Steve Carell in Foxcatcher. Carell has delivered... Film Face-off: 'Godzilla' 1998 vs. 'Godzilla' 2014 Posted: 19 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT Godzilla has been around forever, with most of us simply knowing he exists instead of remembering the moment we first "met" him. The last time Godzilla reared his lizard head on the big screen was 1998, and the film only made $136 million. So, Hollywood ignored the beast as long as it could (actually, 16 years of ignoring is pretty impressive by Hollywood standards). Godzilla is back to terrorize, but it's completely different from the 1998 version. In that film, Godzilla tears apart New York City. In this updated version Godzilla attacks places west of New York. There are a few other differences, too, and that's exactly what a Film Face-off is for, so let's see how Godzilla (1998) compares with Godzilla (2014). Prebeast... Look: H.R. Giger's 'Alien' Concept Art Might Be Scarier Than the Actual Movie Posted: 19 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT The film community is still reeling after the tragic news that Swiss surrealist artist H.R. Giger passed away. Famous for his terrifying artworks featuring biomechanical creatures blended with tortured human forms, Giger first stunned the cinematic community and audiences when his work appeared in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. The Giger family recently posted a brief mention about the artist’s involvement with the project on Giger’s website: In a career with so many star-studded highlights, it is only natural that many have mentioned his world famous brainchild, ALIEN, since the news broke this morning. It was certainly a creation which Giger prized, much as he took great pride in his collaboration with myriads of music industry and film artists... Cannes in 60 Seconds: Oscar Buzz for Steve Carell in 'Foxcatcher' Posted: 19 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT With the first weekend of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival behind us, there is still no easy prediction for the event's top prizes, but critics are raving about one movie seen as a very likely contender in the Best Picture Oscar race, and comedic actor Steve Carell is also receiving buzz for his dramatic turn in the same movie. Meanwhile, reviews are mixed on the new movie from David Cronenberg. Foxcatcher Bennett Miller (Capote; Moneyball) directed this true-crime drama starring an unrecognizable Steve Carell plus Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. Reviews are positive for the movie overall, but it's Carell's Oscar-caliber performance that is really worth notice. Jessica Kiang at The Playlist calls Carell a "revelation," adding that "it’s... See the First Footage from Ryan Gosling's Trippy Directorial Debut, 'Lost River' Posted: 19 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT Last month we gave you a peek at Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut — the fantasy noir Lost River, starring Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, Barbara Steele and Matt Smith. The "modern-day fairy tale" finds Hendricks as a single mother who becomes swept up in the dark underworld of a vanishing city. Her teenage son Bones discovers an underwater town that could be the key to their survival. The film premieres at Cannes this week, and we’re getting our first look at a clip from the surreal story. If this preview is any indication, Lost River is visually striking. The scene is set against an apocalyptic landscape, opening with a shot framed by colorful graffiti. We’re dying to know more about the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: Could Godzilla Really Exist? Posted: 19 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT Godzilla was not only the King of Monsters this weekend, he was also king of the box office. Gareth Edwards’ film raked in an impressive $196 million globally, paving the way for sequel talks. As Godzilla mania sweeps the globe, some have wondered if it's possible for a giant prehistoric lizard to hide away in the vastness of the ocean--which, as we’ve learned during the course of the hunt for that missing Malaysian airplane, is almost entirely uncharted and huge. YouTube user Vsauce 3 tackles this question in an entertaining video called “Could Godzilla Exist?” The short (and obvious) answer is no. At least not as described in the film. Godzilla in the movie weighs 90,000 tons and stands 355 feet tall, which would make him hands down the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: The New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer Is Here and It's Fantastic Posted: 19 May 2014 01:43 PM PDT It's been called Marvel Studios' funniest movie and riskiest movie, but based on everything we've seen so far from this summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, it's also looking like one of Marvel's best movies, too. In theaters August 1, Guardians of the Galaxy has all the makings of an intergalactic epic with a sweet throwback vibe, feeling much in the vein of adventure classics like Star Wars or even Indiana Jones in terms of tone. Starring Chris Pratt (Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon) and Vin Diesel (Groot), the film follows a ragtag group of otherwordly warriors who join forces in an effort to defeat a seemingly unstoppable villain. Ahead of debuting its second full-length... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 19 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT We hope you like Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, because it turns out the actor could be donning the iconic red-and-blue bodysuit all the way through 2020. The Daily Star reports that Garfield has been offered an “amazing” new deal that would keep the actor in the role of Peter Parker for another couple of years. Garfield’s contract already calls for two more films in the role (due in 2015 and 2016), but bosses at Sony are so thrilled with the franchise’s performance that they’d like to lock the star up for another four films if they can. To do this, they’re offering him an extension that not only includes a generous salary, but a profit-sharing plan that could be where the real money comes in. Robert Downey Jr. turned a profit-sharing deal... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Watch: 'Godzilla' Director Gareth Edwards Created This Creepy Sci-fi Short in Only 48 Hours Posted: 19 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT British director Gareth Edwards stormed theaters this past weekend with a blockbuster update of Japanese monster icon Godzilla. It’s a far cry from his low-budget directorial debut, Monsters, which was made for a measly $500,000 with the help of nonactors, digital video, and real-life locations on which he shot guerilla-style. Before Monsters appeared on the scene, Edwards created a five-minute short for the Sci-Fi-London 48 Hour Film Challenge in 2008 — an event in association with the Sci-Fi Channel (now known, to the chagrin of many, as Syfy). According to the Film Stage, the project required filmmakers to feature a clear bottle with red or green liquid in the short, and include the line of dialogue: “I am required to carry out this task until...
