Watch the First Teaser for Ryan Gosling's Directorial Debut, 'Lost River' (VIDEO)

Posted:

lost river teaser trailerFans of the Ryan Gosling of "Hey Girl" meme fame may want to sit out his directorial debut, "Lost River." Based on the film's first teaser clip, there's nothing cute or twee about this surreal thriller.

"Lost River" (formerly titled "How to Catch a Predator") focuses on single mother Billy (Christina Hendricks) and her two sons. The oldest boy, teenager Bones (Iain De Caestecker, "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D."), is front and center in this clip, which is full of images of fire (a bike, a building) and features "Doctor Who" star Matt Smith repeating the phrase "Look at my muscles" over and over as Bones breaks into a desperate run.

While it's hard to tell if Bones is afraid of Smith's character or just madly running toward something else, that seems to be the way Gosling wants it. According to the director's production notes, surreality and fantastical imagery are intentional, especially when considering his influences.

"This film was, in a lot ways, a gift from the directors I've been working with over the last few years," Gosling wrote. "I've gone between acting in films completely based in reality with Derek Cianfrance to the fevered dreams of Nicolas Winding Refn. I think I've vacillated between these two extremes because my own sensibilities as a filmmaker lay somewhere in-between."

It's clear from this clip that "Lost River" will blur the lines between those two styles as much as possible. We'll see if audiences can follow Gosling's heady inspirations.

"Lost River," which also stars Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eva Mendes, is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday.

John Stamos Will Find You on Facebook If You Insult 'Full House'

Posted:

john stamos full house facebook rantMost 20-somethings who grew up watching "Full House" in the '90s can probably admit today that the show wasn't exactly the best-written series. Just don't let John Stamos know.

The onetime Uncle Jesse went on a Facebook rant against a Huffington Post writer who dared to call out "Full House" and other family-friendly TGIF fare for the so-called Important Life Lessons they aimed -- and often failed -- to impart. But what did blogger Annelia Alex say about the show that was so incendiary? Here's a sample, from a post titled "The Lies I Learned From Dumb TV":

Five minutes before the end of every episode, one of the girls would get upset, run away (to her room, to the top of a baseball dugout, into a Disney parade float, etc.), and one of the adults would say, "I'll go talk to her." Then they would have an issue-resolving, self-affirming heart-to-heart with enough time for a zinger before the credits and theme music. I tried this all the time as a kid and no one ever chased after me.

Seems like pretty harmless stuff. But hell hath no fury like an Uncle Jesse scorned, and -- have mercy -- Stamos didn't take Alex's gentle rebuke kindly.

"[A]nnelia, if you hadn't watched ... shows like FULL HOUSE you wouldn't have been open minded and bright enough to write an article like you just did," Stamos wrote on his personal Facebook page. "[O]n the other hand - don't blame the way your life turned out because of TGIF."

And the actor's tirade didn't stop there. Stamos also admonished the blogger for her unrealistic expectations for family-friendly entertainment, sarcastically suggesting that if she has kids she should have them watch shows like "Breaking Bad" and see what lessons they take from the dark drama.

" ... [T]he happiness that these shows have brought to peoples lives - i've felt that more first hand than i'm sure you have," Stamos wrote. "[A]lso - i bet more good than bad came out of those shows. sorry it didn't turn out that way for you annelia or you simply just weren't bright enough to take the good from what we did and laugh at the rest."

Read the whole message on Stamos's Facebook page, and remember: Don't make fun of "Full House" in public unless you're ready to get an earful from Uncle Jesse.

What Aaron Taylor-Johnson Wants in a 'Godzilla' Sequel

Posted:

godzilla sequel aaron taylor-johnsonWhile Warner Bros. has yet to officially greenlight a sequel to "Godzilla," the fact that the reboot scored a monster $93 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend certainly bodes well for the film's chances at a follow-up.

With that in mind, Cinema Blend published some excerpts from an interview with "Godzilla" star Aaron Taylor-Johnson that was conducted before the movie's premiere, in which the star discussed what he'd like to see happen in "Godzilla 2," and how the new would-be franchise ties in with another classic monster series.

Taylor-Johnson admitted that he hasn't seen all the classic "Godzilla" features yet, but knows that Mothra is the likely foe that the beast will face in a follow-up. Still, the star would like the sequel to go in a different direction.

"It would be really interesting to see it take place somewhere else, like there's some disaster somewhere else in the world," Taylor-Johnson said. "And if I'm involved then, you know, I'm in the military, so there is a chance of being called out somewhere in the Middle East or something. That could be kind of interesting, I suppose."

Cinema Blend noted that Taylor-Johnson's character's family, the Brodys, seem to have a connection to Godzilla that is reminiscent of the one between the protagonists and antagonist in the "Jaws" series, and the actor said that something along those lines could play out in future films (including one plot point the site says draws directly from "Jaws: The Revenge").

"[It's] sort of a happy coincidence in a way, but I don't know. I mean, I don't know where they'll go with it, to be honest," Taylor-Johnson said of the "Jaws" connection. "If anything, you know, it would be sort of cooler if it was ten years down the line and my son is somehow involved, you know what I mean? You never really know."

"Godzilla" is in theaters now.

Relive Maya Rudolph's Best 'SNL' Characters (VIDEO)

Posted:

Maya Rudolph returns to NBC tonight for her very own variety show, which is appropriately titled "The Maya Rudolph Show."

The versatile comedian, who starred in "Bridesmaids" and "Up All Night," will be joined by other funny famous faces on the program, such as Andy Samberg, Kristen Bell, and Fred Armisen for some sketch comedy, musical numbers, and a little TV throwback fun.

Maya graced "Saturday Night Live" from 2000-2007, showcasing her comic chops through many memorable characters and spot-on impressions. The funny lady brought us everything from a temperamental Donatella Versace to a Scandinavian art dealer named Nooni.

So, before you check out Maya's new gig, remember some of the best of her "SNL" moments:

Maya's Beyonce was a classic, and she revived the impression this past Saturday night spoofing (duh) the Jay-Z / Solange incident:

Here she is as Donatella Versace:

Maya and Amy Poehler played Betty and Jodi on public access show spoof "Bronx Beat" to accented perfection:

We would be remiss if we didn't add one performance as one half of quirky Scandinavian couple Nooni and Nuni:

And who could forget the adorkable Megan on middle school A/V program "Wake Up Wakefield"?:

And, last but not least, a round of applause for the always fabulous Oprah:

Here's an 'Under the Dome' Season 2 Teaser Photo Just for You

Posted:

under the dome season 2 2014The residents of Chester's Mill stuck "Under the Dome" are in for even more trouble, as a new teaser photo from season two of the CBS hit hints that the forcefield covering the town now appears to be magnetic.

The image depicts four characters -- most likely Big Jim Rennie (Dean Norris), Junior Rennie (Alexander Koch), Sheriff Linda Esquivel (Natalie Martinez), and Barbie (Mike Vogel) -- staring at a sea of metal objects that have attached themselves to the outside of the dome, including grills, bikes, road signs, and lawn equipment. Though it's unclear just what exactly this new development means for those trapped inside the mysterious forcefield, we can't help but think that living under a giant magnet probably isn't good for one's health.

Speaking to that latter point, showrunner Neal Baer teased some devastating developments. Variety's Debra Birnbaum reported that Baer said "another beloved character will meet an untimely death" sometime in season two. Whether it's any of the four people pictured in this teaser remains to be seen.

The second season of "Under the Dome" premieres on CBS on June 30.

jj abrams star wars episode vii noteIf you thought "Star Wars" fans were excited for the release of "Episode VII" next year, wait until you read this note from director J.J. Abrams to the film's cast and crew.

While it doesn't contain any spoilers about the hotly-anticipated flick, the handwritten message, scrawled on what appears to be a page of the "Episode VII" script, is still fascinating, in that it proves just how important the film is to Abrams -- and how much the director wants to keep the "Star Wars" legacy intact.

The full text of the note (in case you can't read Abrams's handwriting):

Dearest Cast and Crew, What an honor it is to work beside all of you, on Star Wars - Ep VII. I can't thank you enough, for all work past and future. Let's take good care, of not just ourselves, but of each other. Amazing, but true: The world awaits this film. Let's give 'em something GREAT. xo JJ

Alfonso Cuaron Is Being Courted for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

Posted:

alfonso cuaron fantastic beasts and where to find themAsk any die-hard "Harry Potter" fan (or bespectacled film nerd) what the best entry in the franchise is, and they will undoubtedly come back with the same response: the third film, Alfonso Cuaron's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." It was bold, dark, and visually sophisticated, and set up the universe that the other best films in the franchise would follow down the line (like the last few that David Yates directed). Well, it looks like Cuaron might be coming back to the Potter-verse after winning his Best Director Oscar this year for "Gravity." Scoop-master Nikki Finke is reporting that he's in "deep talks" for 2016's spin-off film.

Cuaron is supposedly looking to tackle "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," a spin-off film set long before a young wizard with a lightning bolt scar attended Hogwart's. It's based, in part, on one of Harry's textbooks and will follow the book's young author, Newt Scamander. It's the first film in a planned trilogy, with author J.K. Rowling penning the new screenplays as well.

This could all be very, very exciting, especially with Cuaron's involvement. Warner Bros plans to release the film on November 18th, 2016.

The New 'True Blood' Season 7 Trailer Promises an Epic Conclusion (VIDEO)

Posted:

true blood season 7 trailerEven those who aren't obsessive fans of the series can probably appreciate that "True Blood" will be ending its seven-year run on HBO this summer, and by the looks of the new trailer for the final season, it's going to go out with a bang (and, yes, the double entendre is implied at this point; it is "True Blood" after all).

The trailer starts out with a nifty series of flashbacks to the earlier adventures of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), the telepathic waitress who has a knack for falling in love with supernatural creatures of the night, like vampires Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) and werewolf Alcide (Joe Manganiello). "We can't go back to the way things were," she bemoans.

We then get flashes of the new season: a pack of vampire, hopped up on Hep-V (an artificial virus created by the humans to kill off vampire-kind), rampaging and killing. From there it looks like uneasy alliances will be formed (poor Andy Bellefleur) and the entire town is going to descend into madness, before an all-out war between the humans and supernatural beings comes to a head. (The shots of Bon Temps, empty of both monsters and humans, are eerie and unexpectedly resonant.)

Of course, the trailer also promises the series' liberal mixture of sex, violence, and soap opera plotting. Hopefully whoever hasn't gotten naked or slammed with a small bathtub full of fake blood up until this point will do so in these final few episodes. Hey, a boy can dream.

"True Blood" returns to your friend's HBO Go account that you know the password for on June 22nd.

First 'Foxcatcher' Teaser Is Eerie and Odd (VIDEO)

Posted:

foxcatcher teaser trailerDirector Bennett Miller has had unparalleled success turning true stories into utterly compelling cinema. With both "Capote" and "Moneyball," tales of obsession and shifting the paradigms (of baseball and what constitutes true crime, respectively). Well, it looks like Miller's winning streak will continue with this fall's "Foxcatcher," which just premiered at Cannes to mostly rapturous reviews. And now that the first trailer has dropped, you can weigh in on it too (French accent optional).

"Foxcatcher" tells the story of John du Pont (a nearly unrecognizable Steve Carell), the millionaire paranoid schizophrenic who killed Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), an Olympic gold metal-winner in wrestling. The movie seems to be framed through the relationship du Pont had with Dave's brother Mark (Channing Tatum), who went on to win the gold after this tragic event.

Anyone who was around when this happens can attest to how bizarre and unsettling the crime was, with du Pont locking himself inside his mansion for several days while negotiating with police for his release into custody. Everything about this was really weird and disturbing, and from the looks of it, Miller, with his typically understated style, seems to have captured it all without the need to sensationalize or embellish. Also, should we just hand Carell an Oscar ahead of time? Or do we have to wait another 10 months to do that?

Watch the trailer for the film below, which is currently in competition for the Palme d'Or and, from the sound of the reactions today, has a pretty good shot. For the rest of us, it will be out on November 14th, just in time for a big time Academy Awards push.

7 Reasons Brad Pitt May Be the Coolest Guy in Hollywood

Posted:

brad pitt factsWho knew Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey were neighbors? No one did -- not even Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey.

So when Pitt saw McConaughey -- who was in town filming a segment for CBS's "The Amazing Race" -- from his balcony across a busy New Orleans street, he did what any good neighbor would do: he threw him a brewsky.

In the spirit of that moment of generosity, we've rounded up seven of Pitt's most charitable, admirable, or just plain cool life moments.

1. He wins father of the year for reportedly waking up early every morning to make breakfast for his six kids. C'mon.

2. After Hurricane Katrina, Pitt founded the Make It Right Foundation, an organization committed to building 150 sustainable and affordable houses in New Orleans's Ninth Ward. He also committed $5 million of his own money to the cause. No big deal.

3. Pitt and superstar partner Angelina Jolie have donated millions via their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, giving money to organizations like Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children.

4. Pitt learned to fly and has a pilot's license -- because that's what cool people do.

5. When he was with Jennifer Aniston, he reportedly took Greek lessons in honor of her Greek ancestry. And also to make the rest of us look bad.

6. Pitt has been banned from China for his role in "Seven Years in Tibet," which chronicled, in part, the Chinese takeover of Tibet. Who do you know who's been banned from an entire country? Now that's badass.

7. When he's not acting, flying planes, doting over his children, donating millions, or throwing beers to fellow A-listers, he's designing high-concept furniture.

And, of course, this may be the greatest gift he's given to the world:

New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer Is Cosmically Amazing (VIDEO)

Posted:

guardians of the galaxy trailerWhen the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" trailer debuted, with its singular swagger and gonzo sense of humor, it became very clear that this was a very different type of Marvel movie. With the new, full-length trailer, just how different a movie it is becomes even more apparent. Quite frankly, if you aren't jumping around or clapping along or something by the end of this trailer, you might need to check your pulse. It's that good.

The new trailer introduces us to the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group of misfits tasked with defending the cosmos from an ancient evil, in much, much greater detail. There's Peter Quill aka Star Lord (Chris Pratt), a cunning thief and raconteur; Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a powerful, green-skinned warrior; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a monster on a quest for revenge; Groot (Vin Diesel), a sentient tree being; and Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a gun-toting raccoon with a insatiable thirst for extreme violence. So, yeah, it's not exactly "Thor: The Dark World."

In this new trailer we get to see some of the supporting cast, everyone from Glenn Close (that hair!) to Benicio del Toro to John C. Reilly and we get to hear Rocket and Groot actually speak ("I am Groot!"). The movie just looks so cool too, in particular Star Lord's ship the Milano (what a great design!) The fact that it's all set to Norman Greenbaum's iconic jam "Spirit in the Sky" is just the icing on the space-cake. We want this and we want it now.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" zooms into theaters on August 1st. If you need something to do while you wait, please check out the first part of our "Guardians of the Galaxy" set visit report, this one with the Star Lord himself, Chris Pratt.

Box Office: Is Jon Hamm a Movie Star?

Posted:

box office jon hammJon Hamm has played supporting roles in various movies ("Bridesmaids," "The Town"), but he hadn't really carried a film until "Million Dollar Arm" opened this weekend. The Disney sports drama was supposed to answer the question of whether or not the basic-cable leading man could translate his TV fame into big screen stardom.

The short answer is: the jury is still out.

Going into the weekend, pundits predicted a debut around $13 million. After all, the family-friendly Disney film looked like smart counter-programming to the new "Godzilla" and the week-old adult comedy "Neighbors." The strange-but-true premise -- a desperate baseball scout goes to India to recruit cricket aces as pitchers -- was supposed to seem less exotic with the all-American Hamm at the helm.

Unfortunately, "Million Dollar Arm" came up a couple of arms short of the predictions. According to studio estimates, the film debuted with $10.5 million, opening in fourth place. Playing on 3,019 screens, the movie earned an average of $3,482 per venue, a respectable but not great number.

Sure, there were extenuating circumstances. One is that "Godzilla" far exceeded expectations; with predictions around $75 million, it premiered atop the chart with an estimated $93.2 million, some 25 percent ahead of what was predicted. It did especially well on 3D and IMAX screens, which together accounted for more than half the monster-reboot's revenue and helped boost the per-screen average to $23,584, the best of any movie this weekend.

As it turns out, there was a lot of overlap between the "Godzilla" audience and the "Million Dollar Arm" audience. Thanks to canny marketing, audiences and critics thought of "Godzilla" less as the return of the green rubber lizard than an actor- and character-driven disaster movie with relevance to current nuclear and environmental issues. So it played largely to older viewers (60 percent over age 25) as well as male moviegoers (58 percent).

"Million Dollar Arm" turned out to have a similar viewership: sports-loving guys (54 percent of the viewers were male) and older (73 percent over 25). Kids and families were less interested, with family viewership at just 28 percent.

The older audience pays more attention to reviews than most viewers. "Godzilla" may be a summer popcorn monster movie, but older viewers came after it got better-than-expected reviews. Conversely, "Million Dollar Arm" didn't get as good reviews as its makers had hoped. So older viewers looking for a new, critically acclaimed film may have been more likely to choose "Godzilla."

It's worth noting that, as large as "Mad Men" looms in the cultural conversation, it averages only about 2 million viewers each week. Still, if every one of those 2 million had gone to see "Million Dollar Arm," it would have grossed $16 million this weekend. Hamm is a versatile dramatic and comic actor and an able leading man, but it's possible that some "Mad Men" viewers don't want to see him out of character, playing an earnest, redeemable man who is far from Don Draper.

Will Hamm's film career suffer because of "Million Dollar Arm"'s lackluster debut? Not likely. No one will blame him for whatever the film's weaknesses may be, much less for failing to muster much of a crowd opposite "Godzilla." The real test of Hamm's box office bankability will have to wait at least until his next leading role.

By the way, the human star of "Godzilla" was Bryan Cranston, who, like Hamm, starred as an anti-hero on another much-buzzed-about AMC channel show, "Breaking Bad." When that show left the air last fall, it was averaging 5.4 million viewers, more than twice as many as "Mad Men." Of course, while Cranston's presence may have helped convince some moviegoers that "Godzilla" was a piece of prestige entertainment and not just a giant-monster movie, it's still clear that the big draw was the nuclear-breath lizard, not the crystal-meth wizard.

Still, in the big screen Walter White vs. Don Draper showdown, it's White 1, Draper 0.
