Your Top Three: Giant-Monster Movies

Posted: 14 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. It has taken 60 years, but Hollywood has finally made a good Godzilla movie. It's not perfect -- there's some bad acting and dialogue and a disappointing lack of clear subtext for something involving this particular monster -- but the new remake from Warner Bros. is very entertaining, and it features some of the most interesting shots we've seen in a blockbuster in a long time. Director Gareth Edwards makes up for any of the movie's faults with visuals that are both spectacular and clever.   But is it one of the best giant-monster movies of all time? Close, in my book. Comparisons might be difficult, especially if we count movies that simply...

Comics on Film: 5 Characters That Should Not Join the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Posted: 14 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Last week's Comics on Film article seemed to generate a rather passionate discussion in the comments section and a devoted thread on Reddit based off of its major claim: Spider-Man on film should move from his current position at Sony and join Marvel Studios alongside the likes of Iron Man and Captain America. While reading through each participant's thoughts, one theme of the opposing argument that was particularly compelling: comic book fans want all of Marvel's characters to be woven into the fabric of the Marvel cinematic universe. That's certainly not the case. Marvel is home to some of the absolute best icons in superhero fiction, but that's far from meaning that every character should be a part of the shared world that many of them are joining in...

Watch: Godzilla's 10 Greatest Monster Battles

Posted: 14 May 2014 05:30 PM PDT

Everyone knows Godzilla is king of movie monsters. But that claim to fame comes on the shoulders of the many opponents he took out on his path to victory. Some of these kaiju costars are better than others. Some are also weirder than others. But all of them won a solid place in the hearts of giant-monster fans everywhere.   Anguirus Despite the historical significance of being Godzilla's first kaiju foe, Anguirus just can't get any respect. Maybe it's because he's a quadruped. Even if you're covered with spikes and have one of the coolest roars in the series, it's hard to look menacing when you can't even stand. Nevertheless, Anguirus' tenacity and uniqueness should not go unnoticed. He's an underdog, but he's still awesome...

'Wolf Creek 2' Director Greg McLean Tells Us About Making His Brutal, Action-Packed Sequel

Posted: 14 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Wolf Creek 2 is not your average horror movie sequel. It's not just the first movie's scenario -- backpackers who come across a murderous psychopath in the Australian outback -- with a new cast. Sure, it does involve tourists getting killed in the Outback by the devilish Mick (John Jarratt), but it's not a slasher with the co-eds swapped out for new ones. It's got big, elaborate car chases and Hollywood-worthy stunt work, and that's because writer-director Greg McLean treated this not like another horror movie, but a suspenseful action movie with horror elements in it. Though just because this one dials up the action doesn't mean it dials down the gore. Wolf Creek 2 -- available on VOD now -- is not for the faint of heart. To put it bluntly, there is...

Watch What Happens When One Wife Gives Her Husband the Ultimate 'Star Wars' Present

Posted: 14 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

While the name “Star Wars: Episode VII” lingers on the tongue of every nerd across the world, let’s enjoy this spec ad by Bruce Branit, which features the gift of the century. A man and woman trade presents on their anniversary. She gets diamonds and a brand new car. Just when he thinks he’s getting another lame pair of boxers, out comes the Star Wars Millennium Falcon — complete with big, red bow. It’s a fun spoof on those horrible car commercials that need to die already. Bruce Branit and Lucamax Pictures wrote and directed the ad, which features a bunch of geeky Easter eggs. We spotted at least four during our first run-through — but there are several more, including one that isn’t quite visible to the naked eye...

'V/H/S: Viral' Trailer: Get a Look at the Latest in the Horror Found-Footage Franchise

Posted: 14 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Whether you like Magnet Releasing’s found-footage horror series V/H/S or not, it’s hard to argue about the quality of the trailer for each release in the series. Whoever puts these clips together does an amazing job of collecting just enough totally tantalizing images to get us hyped and curious about what exactly is going on. That trend continues in this new clip for the third installment in the series, V/H/S: Viral. The fresh-off-the-presses trailer starts with a sort of “greatest hits” package from the first two films, hitting all the highlights from the tales of guys like Gareth Evans and Radio Silence. Then it jumps into the new installment, with a heady montage that you’ll probably want to watch twice just to take it all in. The way these guys...

See Tim Burton's Early Animated Films That Landed Him a Job at Disney

Posted: 14 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

We always get a kick out of seeing what kind of work our favorite directors were making before they became famous. Master of the macabre Tim Burton started his career at Disney as an animator and storyboard/concept artist, contributing to features like The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron and TRON, but his gothic style just didn’t jibe with the studio’s wholesome image. In fact, 1984’s Frankenweenie was the short that got him fired from Disney for being too dark and scary for kids. Burton’s career at the Mouse House started after one of his shorts attracted the attention of execs. He made Stalk of the Celery Monster and King and Octopus during his studies at the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California, before graduating in...

'Godzilla' Roundup: Alternative Concept Art and the Possibility of 'Pacific Rim' Crossovers

Posted: 14 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

It’s a question percolating in the back of every kaiju-loving fanboy’s mind: Could we eventually see Godzilla and the world of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim collide? Legendary CEO Thomas Tull tackled that very question in a recent interview with Collider. The interviewer asks Tull if the two films exist in the same universe – thereby making a crossover a very real possibility. This is Tull’s response: “They’re completely different worlds.” That would seemingly put the kibosh on the King of Monsters teaming up with the Kaiju in del Toro’s cinematic universe once and for all – but maybe not. They’re different worlds, but that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a way they could crossover at some...
