Ti West and AJ Bowen Tell Us About Turning 'The Sacrament' into a Different Breed of Horror Movie

Posted: 15 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Coming off of The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil, you'd probably expect Ti West's The Sacrament to be another horror movie. It's not. Oh, there's plenty of horrifying things in it, but it's not a horror movie in the same vein as his other works.  The Sacrament stars AJ Bowen and Joe Swanberg as two reporters for Vice (yes, the real media company) who travel to an isolated commune to document what's happened to the sister (Amy Seimetz) of their friend (Kentucker Audley). Once there, they find that she and many, many others like her have become enraptured with the teachings of a mysterious figure known only as Father (Gene Jones). You may suspect what territory it goes into next, and that's because West's film is directly inspired by the...

Poster-Crop Quiz: Can You Guess These Monster Movies?

Posted: 15 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

You hear that rumble in the distance? That's the unmistakable and terrifying sound of an approaching Poster-Crop Quiz! In honor of Godzilla returning to theaters this week, we've gathered posters from some of cinema's best creature features. Godzilla may be King of the Monsters, but we wouldn't want to cross paths with any of these pretenders to the throne. See if you can identify the posters from these shredded images. We cropped them so much they look worse than Tokyo after the big guy goes for a walk. The first person to correctly name all 10 posters in the comments below will receive a shout-out in next week's quiz. It won't summon Mothra or anything, but it's still 100 times better than any given Godzuki appearance. It's hard to move on...

Check Out These Awesome Movie Posters That Were Laser-Cut on to Wooden Slabs

Posted: 15 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

We’ve seen many design-savvy iterations of movie posters, but artist Spacewolf’s engraved wooden one-sheets are a first. The Brooklyn-based artist re-created iconic posters on laser-cut wooden slabs, transforming the famous images into three-dimensional wonders.   Using U.S.-sourced cherry hardwood that has been oiled and sanded by hand, the laser created gorgeous burnt shades and interesting textures to finish the job. It’s a limited-edition series, with only 50 posters of each design being created at this time, so head to Spacewolf’s website to pick up your own pronto. [Spotted via Design Taxi]         MORE FROM AROUND THE WEB...

The Greatest Taglines in Horror-Movie History

Posted: 15 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. Horror distributors have understood the power of a captivating tagline for decades. In fact, I’d argue horror films beat out every other genre when it comes to creating unforgettable ad copy. Seriously, think for a few seconds about the ones you remember. I bet at least 90% of you instantly thought of things along the lines of Alien’s classic “in space, no one can hear you scream” or Last House on the Left’s “To avoid fainting, keep repeating: 'It's only a movie, only a movie, only a movie...'” Horror films have had some truly unforgettable taglines over the years – presumably because the subject matter’s lurid and low-budget nature...

Read Stanley Kubrick's Beautiful Answer to Why Life Is Worth Living

Posted: 15 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Considering movies like Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange don't exactly have the most cheerful depictions of mankind, it'd be easy to think Stanley Kubrick was a deeply pessimistic person. That's not necessarily true, as evidenced in this wonderful comic depiction of a quote from Kubrick about the meaning of life, and it's a beautiful sentiment. The quote comes from a 1968 interview Kubrick did with Playboy magazine. The interviewer had asked about his notorious fear of flying, which initially elicited the kind of dire, existential crisis answer you'd expect from the curmudgeonly Kubrick only to give way to this wonderfully inspiring explanation of why being aware of the meaninglessness of life is actually one of...

A Hot New Poster for 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay--Part 1' Is Revealed, First Look at Julianne Moore and More

Posted: 15 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Whether you loved the first The Hunger Games or not, it's hard to argue that the franchise got a big bump in quality between the first movie and last year's Catching Fire. Naturally the sequel had a bigger budget (about $52 million more) to better flesh out the destitute, violent world Katniss Everdeen lives in, but it also brought in director Francis Lawrence, who has a real eye for spectacle, action and casting. Thankfully he's sticking around to direct the last two films in the series, and today we got our first look at some of the things to look forward to in the next entry, Mockingjay--Part 1. The two biggest reveals of the day are the new poster and the first image of the always-great Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin. In the above shot you can see her...

Cannes in 60 Seconds: The Bad Buzz on 'Grace of Monaco;' 'Story of Your Life' Sets a Festival Record

Posted: 15 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

The 2014 Cannes Film Festival began last night with one of the most panned openers in memory. Check out what critics are saying about that film and a few others that screened on the first day as well as news worth knowing from the event below. Grace of Monaco Nicole Kidman plays real-life actress turned princess Grace Kelly in this mostly fictional drama from Olivier Dahan, which debuted to near-unanimous thumbs down (and a dismal current score of 5% on Rotten Tomatoes). "Even by the standards of recent Royal biopics W.E. and Diana, it’s something of a disaster," writes Oliver Lyttelton at The Playlist. "A princess tale trumped for emotional engagement and sophistication by the likes of Frozen," adds Jason Gorber at Twitch. But at Film School...

Watch: A Great Video That Chronicles the Evolution of Visual Effects from 1878 to 2014

Posted: 15 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Modern film fans have become a bit spoiled when it comes to visual effects as the rise of CGI has made things once deemed completely impossible a reality for filmmakers. We can invent entire worlds with computers, make actors do seemingly impossible things, and create completely unforgettable images thanks to the power of technology. Yet, while modern artists are practically digital wizards, the art of visual effects in film has been around since the dawn of the medium. Artists and filmmakers have been making movie magic on-screen since the earliest days of cinema – and this cool video celebrates not only those early pioneers, but the guys pushing boundaries today.   YouTube user Jim Casey assembled this loving ode the art of visual effects, a three-minute clip...

The Department of Defense Has a Real Plan to Stop a Zombie Apocalypse

Posted: 15 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth – but at least the U.S. government has devised a plan for putting them back in their graves. A recent report reveals the Department of Defense has crafted a document titled "CONOP 8888," which is actually a strategy for dealing with a potential zombie apocalypse. Before you start panicking that this means the government knows something we don’t (like maybe MERS turns people into flesh-eating monsters who can only be killed with a well-placed bullet to the skull!), realize this is simply a “how-to guide" for military planners facing a potential catastrophe. CONOP 8888 is part of a training regimen that asks commanders to come up with plans to protect humans from an ever-growing...

The Avengers Assemble to Grant One Man's Dying Wish

Posted: 15 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

As Sophie Caldecott struggled with the fact that her father Stratford was slowly succumbing to prostate cancer, she set off on a quest to make his final days memorable ones. After doctors gave him roughly 12 weeks to live, Sophie looked to turn her father's love of all things Marvel superheroes into a reason for the Avengers to assemble in honor of her dad. So she took to her personal blog with a message for those Avengers--many of whom were off shooting The Avengers: Age of Ultron--not knowing whether anyone would answer the call: "We’re going to try and get in touch with Marvel to ask if they can fulfill dad’s dying wish by sending us a copy of the film for him to watch at home. But I think we can go further than that. We’re also going to tweet the...
