Damon Wayans Jr. Officially Joins 'New Girl' Cast. Finally. Posted: If you're a diehard fan of "New Girl," you're probably pleased as punch that Damon Wayans Jr. returned to the show to reprise his role of Coach. Wayans Jr. appeared on the pilot of "New Girl" when the future of "Happy Endings" looked shaky, but he left his roomies behind once "Happy Endings" got renewed. Sadly, "Happy Endings" got canned anyway, but the loss is somewhat mitigated by the return of Coach and Wayans Jr. on "New Girl." Even though Wayans Jr. has been totally rocking out as Coach in every episode, he was still being billed as a guest star. Come on, even Winston's cat Ferguson gets better billing than that! But now it's offish: The handsome comedian will be a regular on the fourth season of "New Girl," which means we can only hope for more amazing Coach insights like, "It really bums me out that I will never know the infinite joy of what it feels like to carry a child inside of me." Meanwhile, his "Happy Endings" co-star Adam Pally is over on "The Mindy Show" killing it as the fratty gyno Peter Prentice. Pally was made a series regular last September. Casey Wilson, who played the lovelorn Penny on "Happy Endings," is set to star in "Marry Me," a show created by "Happy Endings" showrunner (and Wilson's fiancé) David Caspe. Eliza Coupe, who played Wayan Jr.'s onscreen wife Jane, also has a new show in the works over at USA. So far, there are plenty of happy endings to go around. Damon Wayans Jr. and "New Girl" co-star Jake Johnson have a movie coming out on August 13 called "Let's Be Cops," which should tide us over until the fall TV season begins. Let's Celebrate Two More Years of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' Posted: While NBC and CBS have been playing musical chairs with their late night hosts recently, ABC is looking to keep its talk show talent put: The network just signed Jimmy Kimmel to a two-year contract extension. Kimmel's new deal means he'll remain the host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" through at least January 2017. While he's currently losing the 11:35 p.m. timeslot to new "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon, Kimmel's had success in that spot compared to his previous 12:05 a.m. show, with viewership for "Live" up 28 percent in its full first season at the earlier time. While ABC's maneuver in securing Kimmel for two more years is a huge vote of confidence, the host is set to once again face some stiff competition in his timeslot when Stephen Colbert takes over CBS's "The Late Show" from retiring host David Letterman sometime in 2015. Kimmel has been steadily beating Letterman by about 162,000 viewers since his transition to 11:35, but the buzzy Colbert could prove tougher to trump. It seems that we'll have to wait until at least next year to find out how this all shakes out. CBS still needs to fill the seat of the also retiring "Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson (set to depart at the end of 2014), and Comedy Central is still planning out how -- or if -- it will replace Colbert once he vacates his "Colbert Report." Late night talk shows, once predictable and staid, have suddenly become a lot more unpredictable. Gerard Butler Drops Out of the 'Point Break' Remake Posted: Bummer, dude: Gerard Butler has dropped out of the "Point Break" remake. Butler, who was set to play Zen-influenced surfer and thief Bodhi (the part originated by the late Patrick Swayze in the 1991 flick), reportedly left the project for a number of reasons, including creative and scheduling conflicts. "'Point Break' will start shooting in late June, lasting several months, and will take its actors to international locales. But Butler also has on his docket 'London Has Fallen,' the sequel to 'Olympus Has Fallen,' which shoots in the fall in London," The Hollywood Reporter writes. "Insiders say Alcon is intent on maintaining its start date and will recast the part in the coming weeks." Further details about alleged creative differences were not available. Luke Bracey, who was cast as undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah (played by Keanu Reeves in the original), is still on board for the project. The reboot had been rumored to switch from the world of competitive surfing to international extreme sports, though there haven't been any other updates about the plot so far. It seems Alcon will need another leading man before it worries about releasing story details. The flick is due out sometime in 2015. 'Almost Famous' Was Almost Terribly Titled Posted: "Almost Famous" was also almost terribly-titled, according to some recently unearthed notes from writer-director Cameron Crowe. In a post on his website, The Uncool, Crowe shared pages from his notebook scribbled with dozens of possible titles for the Oscar-winning film, which was loosely based on Crowe's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. Some of the names are pretty self-explanatory ("My Back Pages" harkens back to protagonist William Miller's early reviews in underground music magazines, "The Uncool" references the iconic speech by Philip Seymour Hoffman's Lester Bangs), while others tie in with slightly more obscure nods to the film ("Tangerine" is the name of the Led Zeppelin song that plays over the movie's closing scene, "A Thousand Words" is the first assignment William gets from Bangs, when he reviews a Black Sabbath concert). But some of the alternatives are pretty rough, too. Can you imagine the film being called "In Thru the Out Door"? Or "Rock School"? How about "Hotel Kisses"? Those just don't have the same ring as "Almost Famous." Crowe also noted the the movie was simply called "Untitled" for a while (and the longer, director's cut version of the film that's on the DVD release still holds that moniker), though eventually, the right name prevailed. "I found the notes from our big "What are we going to call this movie?' session towards the end of making 'Almost Famous,'" Crowe explained to Empire, which reprinted the pages for its 300th issue. "A lot of bad alternatives are listed here... luckily, we ended up with one keeper on the list." Luckily, indeed. [h/t The Playlist] Photo by Frederick M. New DVD Blu-ray: 'Veronica Mars,' 'Blazing Saddles,' and More Posted: "Veronica Mars" What's It About? Everyone's favorite teen PI Veronica Mars is all grown up. She's living in NYC with Piz and just about to snag a plum lawyer gig when she's called back to Neptune to help out her ex Logan. In typical Logan fashion, he's in legal hot water - this time around, he's accused of murdering his girlfriend. Oh, it's also their high school reunion. Fun times! Why We're IN: Okay, if you're a diehard Marshmallow, chances are you're already getting a copy of the movie from Kickstarter. But, hey, while you wait for them to be sent out, why not snag an extra copy or two? Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week "Ace in the Hole" (Criterion) What's It About? Kirk Douglas stars as a ruthless reporter scheming to keep his latest scoop in the headlines. A classic film noir, and Billy Wilder's follow-up to "Sunset Boulevard." Why We're IN: This Criterion release has been digitally restored and features an uncompressed monaural soundtrack, plus a doc about Wilder and much more. New on DVD & Blu-ray "The Art of the Steal" What's It About? Not to be confused with the documentary about art dealers, this cheesy heist flick stars Kurt Russell as a art thief slash motorcycle dude, Matt Dillon as his shifty brother, and Jay Baruchel as a thief-in-training. IN or OUT: This Canadian flick left the majority of those who saw it feeling frosty. "Call Me Crazy: A Five Film" What's It About? Laura Dern, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ashley Judd, Bonnie Hunt, and Sharon Maguire each direct a short film about women living with mental illness in this TV movie anthology. The sprawling cast includes Melissa Leo, Jennifer Hudson, Sarah Hyland, Octavia Spencer, and Brittany Snow. IN or OUT: DVR it, if you must. "Son of Batman" What's It About? Oops, Batman had a baby with Talia al Ghul, and now that baby is all grown up and itching to fight crime like his daddy! Can Batman and Damian defeat Deathstroke? (Hint: Probably.) IN or OUT: Fans of the animated Batman series will dig this. The rest of you, maybe not so much. "Still Mine" What's It About? James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold ("The House of Yes," "Dead Ringers") star as Craig and Irene Morrison, an aging but independent married couple facing some rather unpleasant truths about their future together. IN or OUT: Reviewers gave this tearjerker pretty solid reviews, so if you're up for something a little more serious, give it a try. New on Blu-ray "Blazing Saddles" (40th Anniversary) What's It About? Mel Brooks takes aim at the Wild West with this scathingly hilarious satire about a small frontier town, crooked politicians, and the African-American man they install as sheriff for their own twisted purposes. Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Brooks, and many others populate this crazy comedy. Why We're IN: It's 40 years old and as funny (and relevant) as ever, but there's not much to recommend this version if you've already got it on Blu-ray. "The Andy Griffith Show: Season 1" What's It About? Join Mayberry Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard), Barney Fife (Don Knotts), and Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) for the first season of this small-town sitcom. IN or OUT: There are some cool features, like home movies from the set shot by Ron Howard's father Rance. Guys Being Guys Party 3-Pack ("Bachelor Party" / "Revenge of the Nerds" / "Porky's") What's It About? The next time you want to bro down over some beers and movies, toss these extremely mediocre-to-terrible '80s comedies into the Blu-ray player and see how it goes. Yeah, buddy! IN or OUT: Not even as a gag gift. "The Honeymooners: Classic 39" What's It About? Welcome to the first season of the classic '50s sitcom about bus driver Ralph Kramden, his dippy best friend Ed Norton, and his no-BS wife Alice. Starring Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, and Audrey Meadows. IN or OUT: Fans will want to spring for this, if only to see the "Honeymooners" musical. "I Love Lucy: Ultimate Season 1" What's It About? Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz star in this beloved sitcom about a married couple who wanna make it in showbiz. IN or OUT: There's plenty to recommend for fans of the series, like some of the classic episodes, the remastered pilot episode, and even radio broadcasts. Everyone else, not so much. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection ("State Fair" / "Oklahoma!" / "The King and I" / "Carousel" / "South Pacific" / "The Sound of Music") What's It About? 6 movies and 851 minutes of Rodgers and Hammerstein musical goodness, that's what! IN or OUT: We're not sure that even diehard musical fans will want to shell out their hard-earned bucks for this collection. "The Women" (1939) What's It About? George Cukor's ensemble comedy gathered some of the finest ladies in the biz for this all-female flick about love, marriage, and gossip. Co-starring Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Norma Shearer, and many more. IN or OUT: There's a reason it's a classic. Stop DVR'ing it each time it comes on TMC, and just buy the darn thing. 'Night at the Museum 3' Has a New Title: 'Secret of the Tomb' Posted: "Night at the Museum 3" has a new title and a new release date. The latest installment in the "Night at the Museum" franchise is now called "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," and is slated for release on December 19. The film had previously been scheduled to open on Christmas Day. Ben Stiller returns as a hapless museum security guard, who coincidentally always seems to be working when objects at the museum come to life. The action for the third film in the series has been moved to the British Museum, in London. The new subtitle indicates that much of the story will focus on Ben Kingsley's new character, who's described as an Egyptian pharaoh who's been brought to life by a magic tablet. Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, and Ricky Gervais are reprising their roles from the first two films; Rebel Wilson joins the ensemble as a night security guard at the museum. Yes, There Will Be a 'Spring Breakers 2.' And It Sounds Insane. Posted: Sometimes little delicious little nuggets of news are hidden in dry industry press releases, which is exactly the case with "Spring Breakers 2." Talk about burying the lede! Wild Bunch, a distribution and production company, is bringing a whole mess of films to Cannes that sound downright bananas, a remake of "Maniac Cop" that everyone's been clamoring for since the '80s (#nope), a new Paul Verhoeven rape revenge thriller (#nope), a sexy love triangle from Gaspard Noé (#hellno), and "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming" (#WHAT). Get those nunchucks ready for a battle between good and evil as the party people of spring break go to war with "an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." Novelist Irvine Welsh has already written the script, and given the topics of his previous novels like "Trainspotting," "Ecstasy," "Filth," and "Porno," we cannot wait to see what he's cooking up. Welsh and "Trainspotting" director Danny Boyle are currently exploring options for a sequel to "Trainspotting" based on the novel "Porno." Directorial duties will fall to Jonas Akerlund, whose credits include "Spun," "Horsemen," and a whole slew of music videos like Lady Gaga and Beyonce's video for "Telephone." Um, yes. Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval confirmed that some of the cast from "Spring Breakers" will be in the second film. "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," he said, which makes sense if you've seen the movie. The plot sounds a little schlocky -- does anyone remember that Kevin Smith film? -- but with Welsh and Akerlund on board, things could get seriously weird. And we hope they do. We're already looking forward to whatever insane catchphrase this "Spring Breakers" will come up with, although it will be hard to top James Franco's monologue about all of his awesome "sh--." Space Is the Place in the New 'Interstellar' Poster (PHOTO) Posted: Oh, man. Remember when NASA was a thing that got funding from the government? Well, Christopher Nolan would like to remind us all that one of humanity's wildest achievements was launching ourselves (and the occasional doomed animal) into outer space. Here's a look at the poster for Nolan's next movie "Interstellar," which is shrouded in so much secrecy it makes J.J. Abrams look like the town gossip. Nolan wouldn't even tell Hans Zimmer, who is like his best friend ever, as well as the movie's composer, what "Interstellar" is about. How the heck do you compose a score for a film you've never seen? Sounds like Nolan did some Vulcan mind melt thing with Zimmer. Anyway, half the fun of a Nolan film is trying to put together the puzzle pieces. Or, you know, just watching the movie when it comes out next November. 'Tammy' Trailer: Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon Hit the Road (VIDEO) Posted: As we saw in the first trailer for "Tammy," robbing a burger joint isn't a foolproof scheme, especially when a character played by the hilarious Melissa McCarthy is the mastermind. It's all about the crocs and finger guns for our heroine as she ineptly robs the employees of the local Topper Jack's. The second trailer picks up where the first left off, with a brief look at Tammy's burger bungle and ensuing mishegoss with her -- wait for it -- grandmother, who is played by noted sex bomb Susan Sarandon. Let that sink in a minute. You're back? OK, great. Sarandon is rocking a white wig and those terrible cataract-friendly sunglasses as a boozy broad named Pearl who suggests Niagara Falls as their destination. Pearl is packing a purse full of booze and bad advice, such as but not limited to how to "unrob" the Topper Jack's. "Just throw the money, and we'll get out of her," she advises. Yeah, not so much. There's also an action montage that includes a very slow jog away from cops, dancing, boob-flashing, and much more. It's very silly but also deadpan and weird, which are all things we enjoy! McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone co-wrote the script, so we've got high hopes that it will fully showcase McCarthy's skills. This is also Falcone's directorial debut. "Tammy" comes out July 2, just in time for the long weekend. Although June is packed with movies sure to bring in crazy box office bucks, like "The Fault in Our Stars," "22 Jump Street," "Think Like a Man Too," and "Transformers: Age of Extinction," we're hoping that "Tammy" will snag lots of eyeballs searching for some funny onscreen females. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill Have Boundary Issues in Our Exclusive '22 Jump Street' Preview (VIDEO) Posted: Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill truly put the "buddy" in "buddy cop comedy," as this new featurette for "22 Jump Street," premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, proves. The clip features interviews with cast members including Tatum, Hill, and Ice Cube, who discuss how the actors' off-screen camaraderie fuels their performance as cops Jenko and Schmidt. "So much of the humor and heart of this movie comes from the fact that Chan and I have a really great friendship in real life," Hill says, while Tatum compares his relationship with Hill to that of "Bad Boys" stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. In addition to the talking heads, the clip also showcases some behind-the-scenes goofing around between the co-stars, interspersed with shots from the actual film. While Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman) may tell Schmidt and Jenko that he "hoped never to see [them] again," this featurette only reminds us how excited we are to find out what the boys have been up to since 2012's "21 Jump Street." "22 Jump Street" hits theaters on June 13. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Angelina Jolie Gets Into Character in a Wicked New 'Maleficent' Preview (EXCLUSIVE) Posted: It seemed almost too perfect: when Angelina Jolie signed up for "Maleficent," in the role of the iconic villainess from Walt Disney's animated classic "Sleeping Beauty," it was one of those perfect marriages of character and star that only come along every so often. And every glimpse of the live-action movie, a "Wicked"-like tale told from the villainess's point-of-view, reiterates this fact: Jolie is Maleficent. If this is at all in question, just check out our exclusive new featurette. "When I was a little girl, she was my favorite Disney character," Jolie reveals at the opening of the little behind-the-scenes look. "She had a wicked sense of fun," she later adds. And based on the footage interspersed between the interviews, it sure does look like this new big screen incarnation doesn't skimp on the ferocity. Jolie is all in, whether cackling wildly or flying over the grassy plains of a fairytale kingdom. Not only does the actress embody the character physically, with the high cheekbones and knot of horns rising high above her head, but she gets the spirit of Maleficent; the stuff that makes her such a magnetic antihero in the first place. Linda Woolverton, who wrote the script (with some help from Paul Dini), said that she was intimidated not only by the legendary status of the character, but also by Jolie's formidable presence. "My task was to live up to both of them," Wooverton says. By the looks of things, she has. Disney's "Maleficent" opens on May 30. Get your advance tickets now.
