What Movie Should Have Its Own Cruise?

Posted: 05 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Are you one of the biggest Wes Anderson fans on the planet? If so, you're already looking into getting a ticket for the Grand Budapest Hotel cruise, right? It's not a trip themed around the movie or Anderson's movies in general, nor does it go anywhere near where the fictional Republic of Zubrowka would be located, but the director will be aboard along with Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman and filmmaker Roman Coppola. There will also be a screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel and there will be a Q&A to follow. Hopefully at least everyone is given Team Zizzou red beanies, even if that's from a different movie. The trip is aboard the Queen Mary 2, via Cunard Cruise Lines, from New York to Southampton, England, June 13 to June 20. Rooms are available at mostly...

The 'Spider-Man' Movie Moments That Are Most Like Their Comic Counterparts

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

It’s always a nice touch when superhero movies remember to honor their comic book origins. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 now in theaters, we thought we’d see how well Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s Spider-Man movies fare in that department. Here are a few examples of how they stayed true to the comics they’re based on. Click on the images to enlarge.   1. Spider-Man: “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility” No Spider-Man story should be without Stan Lee’s most enduring line from Spidey’s first appearance – even if it’s become slightly more succinct over the years.   2. Spider-Man: The Thief Who Gets Away A fleeing thief, a pursuing cop, and an indifferent Spider-Man. Raimi’s movie...

'X-Men' Writer Is Making a Movie About the Long-Lost 'E.T.' Video Game (Update)

Posted: 05 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Update: The highly publicized dig was completed last week and a treasure trove of E.T. cartridges were exhumed from the landfill. Scroll down for pics. It's pretty amazing the carts are in such good condition. Apparently, some of them are still playable three decades later.  Original story below... It’s one of gaming’s most infamous stories – back in 1983, as part of the great video game crash, Atari buried millions of unsold copies of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in a New Mexico landfill. Did it really happen, though? We’ll find out for sure in two weeks, when filmmaker Zak Penn films a documentary wherein they open the landfill in search of the fabled games. E.T. remains one of the worst video games in the history of the...

Film Face-off: 'Spider-Man 2' vs. 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Posted: 05 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

My Spidey senses tell me that history repeats itself, sometimes pretty fast. Ten years ago Spider-Man 2 opened up and crushed box office records. It was also very well received; it has a 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and when people name their favorite superhero movie of all time, it joins the conversation with The Dark Knight, The Avengers, The Incredibles and Howard the Duck. OK, one of those isn't normally mentioned. So, can The Amazing Spider-Man 2 match up with Spider-Man 2? Let's find out in this week's Film Face-off.   Peter Parker Spider-Man 2 Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker. As Peter he's a plucky sort who's trying to remain upbeat even though Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) may marry another. His best...

Steven Spielberg's 'Halo' Is Close to Becoming a TV Series on Showtime

Posted: 05 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

While gamers are still clamoring for a movie based on Microsoft’s wildly popular Halo franchise, they may have to settle for the next best thing: a Showtime television series chronicling the adventures of Master Chief in his war against intergalactic invaders. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment has been hard at work developing a series based on the sci-fi shooter about a faceless supersoldier taking on multiple alien enemies for the past year. Now they’re closing in on finding showrunners to bring writer Stuart Beattie’s vision to the screen with an eye on getting the series set up at Showtime. Part of the reason negotiations have dragged on centered on the fact that the Halo series would not only air on the same network as Homeland, but will also be...

The 'Star Wars' Sequel That Never Was, Plus: Is This Our First Look at the New Chewbacca?

Posted: 05 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Star Wars Day might be over for another year, but there’s still plenty of news from a galaxy far, far away to share with you today. First up, our friends over at Screen Crush have a great feature about the sequel to Star Wars that never happened. As hard-core fans already know, George Lucas had plans for multiple films before the original Star Wars ever hit a single theater. Since he couldn’t possibly know if the first film would resonate with audiences, he couldn’t lock in where, exactly, the second film would go. As such, he planned both Empire Strikes Back and a smaller sequel called Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which was published as a novel and essentially became the first piece of expanded-universe fiction. In the book, Luke and Leia square off...

Watch: Thomas Haden Church Goes Out for Burgers After Killing a Man in This Exclusive 'Whitewash' Clip

Posted: 05 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

In the recently released Whitewash, Thomas Haden Church plays a snowplow driver in an isolated region of Quebec whose life already isn't going as planned, and things only get worse when he accidentally kills a man with his plow. So he does the one thing that seems like a good decision at the time: hide the body deep in the woods and hope no one ever finds it. As you can guess, things don't really go as expected, sending Church on a torturous journey where he's battling both his own guilt and the paranoia that he might be discovered. And as you can see from the exclusive clip below, Whitewash does a great job of infusing the thriller side of the story with some comedy. In this scene you can see Church's character trying to refuel for the night at a...

Watch: How Disney Movies Helped an Autistic Boy Find His Place in the World

Posted: 05 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

There are all kinds of stories about people who broke through the chains of sorrow or longing with the help of cinema. Movies can aid us to heal by offering a space of understanding and catharsis — a conduit for our emotions. A CBS report recently highlighted an incredible story about a young man named Owen. At three years old, Owen was a chatty child who happily engaged with his family, but when he suddenly stopped sleeping, talking, and lost eye contact with those around him, the family knew something was wrong. Owen was diagnosed with autism, but worse than that, he seemed incredibly unhappy. His parents started to notice that the only thing that seemed to bring him any kind of comfort was watching Disney animated films. In fact, it was Peter Pan and The...

'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Director Marc Webb on How They Created the Film's Most Memorable Scene

Posted: 05 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Note: The following post reveals major spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has made roughly $92 million in its opening weekend and everyone and their cat has seen it, it seems appropriate that we can actually discuss the movie's tragic, shocking ending, in a fairly open way. So we discussed the conclusion of the film with Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb last week, and it goes without saying to turn back around if you haven't seen the film yet. Major spoilers ahoy! We talked with Webb about whether or not he ever considered ending the movie on a truly bleak note, more along the lines of something like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, why that wasn't feasible, and what went into the truly amazing staging of that finale...
