Batman TV Prequel 'Gotham' Coming to Fox's 2014-2015 Season (VIDEO) Posted: After gathering some impressive talent for its cast, Fox's Batman prequel series "Gotham" has another exciting addition: A series order from the network. Fox made the announcement Monday that it would pick up the series for a full season to air sometime on the 2014-2015 schedule. It's expected to get a 22-episode order, though that exact number was unclear Monday. While Bruce Wayne will appear on the show (played as a young man by David Mazouz), "Gotham" is meant to focus more closely on the residents of the Dark Knight's hometown, including main character Commissioner James Gordon (played by "The O.C." and "Southland" vet Ben McKenzie), in his pre-commissioner days. Villains the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Joker, and Catwoman (Camren Bicondova) will all get their due, as will crooked Gotham detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), and the new villain Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), who was created specifically for the show. The show is the third drama picked up by Fox for next season. It joins the Rainn Wilson-starring procedural "Backstrom," and "Hieroglyph," set in ancient Egypt. Expect "Gotham" to compete with similar superhero tie-in shows like ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and the CW's "Arrow" for eyeballs next year. Check out the trailer below. It's Official: Lisa Kudrow's 'The Comeback' Is Making a Comeback Posted: It's official: "The Comeback" is making a comeback. HBO confirmed the news Monday that its cult, one-season show, starring a fresh-from-"Friends" Lisa Kudrow as a deluded, washed-up sitcom star, will be returning for another season. "The Comeback," which premiered way back in 2005, lasted only 13 episodes; this new season is being billed as a "six-episode limited series." The meta show focuses on Valerie Cherish, an actress who decides to shoot a reality show detailing her attempt to regain her star status, though things don't exactly go as planned. According to HBO's official press release announcing season two, the show will pick up 10 years later, as the reality TV craze has reached new heights. "Valerie thinks she has it all figured out this time. She doesn't," the release states. " ... In the new episodes, Valerie continues her search to attain the spotlight, but this time around, it illuminates a whole new series of problems when she achieves the visibility she wants." Lance Barber, Dan Bucatinsky, Robert Michael Morris, Laura Silverman, and Damian Young are slated to appear alongside Kudrow in the new batch of episodes. Season two of "The Comeback" is slated to debut this fall on HBO. [via TheWrap] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Guess Who's Returning for 'Pitch Perfect 2'? Posted: The cast of "Pitch Perfect 2" continues to expand, with Adam DeVine set to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel. Deadline reports that DeVine, who played the obnoxious leader of an all-male collegiate a cappella group in the 2012 original, will be back for the follow-up, set to hit theaters next spring. The "Workaholics" star joins fellow returning cast members Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow, as well as recently-announced new addition Hailee Steinfeld. "Pitch Perfect" focused on the female a cappella group the Barden Bellas, who were striving for redemption following an embarrassing showing at a national collegiate singing competition. The sequel, penned by original screenwriter Kay Cannon and directed by the first film's co-star, Elizabeth Banks, is rumored to follow Kendrick and Wilson's characters' senior year of college. "Pitch Perfect 2" is due out on May 15, 2015. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Is This the Full Title of 'Star Wars: Episode VII'? Posted: Today in super-speculative "Star Wars: Episode VII" news: Has the movie's full title been (accidentally) revealed? That's the word from Pedestrian, which reports that someone claiming to be employed by the "Episode VII" production tweeted out some details about the flick, including its top-secret subtitle. According to the site, the title revealed by this mysterious tweeter (who's since deleted his account) is "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Order of the Jedi." Pedestrian notes that the account was created and shut down pretty quickly, which could hint that it was indeed legit, and once someone in charge caught wind of it, wanted to scrub it from the internet to avoid spoilers. Other details the account revealed, per Pedestrian: "Luke Skywalker will be an Obi Wan Kenobi-like mentor figure, Princess Leia and Han Solo will be high ranking officials of the republic, and that the bad guy will not be a Sith Lord." All of this, obviously, should be considered a rumor for now, especially since no evidence of this mysterious Twitter account remains. (And even if it did, there was no way to confirm that the person who created it was in any way affiliated with the movie.) But "Star Wars" fans have no doubt grown used to endless, empty speculation about "Episode VII," so what's one more rumor to throw on the pile? "Star Wars: Episode VII" -- and whatever subtitle it uses -- hits theaters December 18, 2015. [h/t Uproxx] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Orange Is the New Black' Renewed for Season 3 (Don't Tell Crazy Eyes) Posted: Orange will be in for at least another season: Netflix has renewed "Orange Is the New Black" for Season 3. Series star Laura Prepon -- who guest-starred in the first season, and is set to appear in only a handful of episodes in the soon-to-be-released season two -- announced the news on Instagram Monday, posting "It's official!! Season 3!!" alongside a snapshot of a list of episode titles. HitFix inquired with Netflix about the veracity of Prepon's post, and the streaming service responded, "This is how we're making it official." Prepon also revealed she'll be back full-time for season three. No timeframe has been announced for those episodes' release, but considering season two has yet to hit Netflix, we'd imagine it won't be until sometime next year at the earliest. The second season of "Orange is the New Black" premieres on Netflix on June 6. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Andrew Garfield Is Hunted by Sinister Pro-Beyonce Forces in 'The Beygency' (VIDEO) Posted: Since Beyonce released her amazing self-titled fifth album last December, in a sneak attack move that patently redefined how major albums are distributed and required silence from more people than the JFK assassination, there has been a groundswell of support from the artist, whose last album, 2011's "4" wasn't exactly the smash it should have been. In a pre-recorded sketch on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend (they are no longer "Digital Shorts"), the show's host Andrew Garfield found out what it was like to be the one man in the entire world to dispute Bey's reign. The sketch (via Huffington Post), entitled "The Beygency," is pretty weird and funny, and made even weirder and funnier by the fact that it's largely inspired by the Matt Damon / Emily Blunt sci-fi romance "The Adjustment Bureau," a movie that I liked quite a bit but didn't exactly set the world on fire. Garfield plays a man pursued by sinister forces after he admits that he didn't think that "Drunk In Love" was all that good. It's even better because Taran Killam, the "SNL" cast member who made waves thanks to his homemade video where he uncannily recreates the video for Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend" (with some help from his fellow cast members/writers), is allowed to dance a little bit in the clip. Just watch the video below. And be sure to bow down, bitches. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Godzilla' Clip Teases a Battle With Another Monster: 'Let Them Fight' (VIDEO) Posted: While those of us who have seen the new "Godzilla" (#blessed) are under strict orders to keep our mouths shut until closer to the May 16 release date, Warner Bros. apparently has no problem spoiling some of the surprises in a series of increasingly explicit clips and trailers. The most recent clip (via Entertainment Weekly) features another one of the movie's jumbo-sized monsters, and should only be watched if you're comfortable with knowing a bit more about the upcoming remake than you probably should. Still there? OK, the scene in question starts out with a brief bit of dialogue between Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), a scientist who works for a mysterious group called Monarch, and Admiral Stenz (David Strathairn), who is running the military operation for what basically amounts to chasing giant monsters around the world. Stenz asks Serizawa about the "alpha predator" Serizawa has been following a primordial beast known as Godzilla for as long as he can remember. After two unidentified, bug-like monsters (given the acronym MUTO -- Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) show up and start wreaking havoc, Serizawa is certain that Godzilla can settle the score. "The arrogance of man is thinking that nature is in their control, and not the other way around," Serizawa gravely intones. Then, he says, "Let them fight." We're then treated to a few choice shots of one of these new, Mothra-type monsters flying through the urban tangle of San Francisco (that's star Elizabeth Olsen running for cover), before Godzilla shows up, ready to lay the prehistoric smack down on this winged freak. "Godzilla" opens May 16. Get excited. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Did That Hippie Commune on Last Night's 'Mad Men' Look Familiar? Here's Why. Posted: Last night's episode of "Mad Men" (Season 7, Episode 4: "The Monolith") was the kind of slow burn episode that placed a heavy emphasis on mood and character but was fairly low on things actually, you know, happening (that final shot of Don on the typewriter, as Peggy storms into his office, was priceless though). The most fascinating plot thread of the night probably involved Roger (John Slattery) and his ex-wife Mona (Talia Balsam) going to retrieve his daughter Margaret (Elizabeth Rice) from a hippie commune upstate (she has renamed herself Marigold, obviously). This rustic setting was placed in stark opposition to what was going on in the office, where a huge computer was being installed. And while much of the online speculation involved with "Mad Men" this season has centered on Megan and her potential involvement with the Manson Family, some nifty theorizing popped up in response to the hippie commune Margaret stays at. As Entertainment Weekly points out, the commune seems to be the same set that appeared in season one episode "The Hobo Code," which gave us one of those gritty flashbacks to Don's (Jon Hamm) awful childhood on a Depression-era farm. So far the show has yet to respond to Entertainment Weekly's keen-eyed observation, but this kind of awesome pop culture recycling isn't beyond the show. Last year, when Don brought his kids to the whorehouse where he grew up, it was noted that this was actually the same house from Michael Jackson's immortal "Thriller" music video. It's a scream! What do you think -- is this really the house where Don grew up? And isn't this hippie house at geographical odds with the character's history? Let us know! J.J. Abrams Easily Wins Battle of the 'Star Wars Day' Video Selfies (VIDEO) Posted: Yesterday, as we all know, was Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you), and even though the initial cast was announced for the forthcoming, overwhelmingly anticipated "Star Wars: Episode VII" didn't mean that director J.J. Abrams couldn't drop in and give the faithful a little treat. Abrams and his co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who famously worked on the screenplays for both "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" in the original trilogy, unleashed a small "video selfie" wishing fans around the world a happy Star Wars Day. It's pretty brief and awkward but also really cute. A couple of things, too: can you tell how bummed Abrams is to be away from his family in Los Angeles? Supposedly one of the majorly contentious issues when Abrams signed on was Disney's insistence, for reasons involving a complicated tax incentive, to shoot the new movie in London. (Abrams had lobbied Paramount to shoot "Star Trek Into Darkness" in Los Angeles, a battle he ultimately won but which tacked on unnecessary millions to the final production cost.) "We are desperately missing our families back in California..." Abrams begins. Frowny face! Secondly, there are telltale signs about the production. Mostly what's interesting is that they're continuing to work on the script. This thing comes out in December of next year, filming begins in earnest next month, and this thing still doesn't have a script? Good golly miss Molly. Also somewhat telling is that Abrams says "as casting announcements continue," which means that yes, there are plenty of roles that have yet to be announced. So everyone that was heated about the lack of females cast in the movie, just be cool: they're coming. "Star Wars: Episode VII" will be out in December of next year. We hope everyone celebrated Star Wars Day responsibly, and with your favorite astromech droid. Photo by Keith Tsuji/Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch an Epic Rap Battle Between Rick Grimes and Walter White (VIDEO) Posted: Well this is... Something. The cracked geniuses behind Epic Rap Battles of History, a YouTube channel that pits Michael Jordan vs. Muhammad Ali and Donald Trump vs. Ebenezer Scrooge (we love that one) has now turned their attention to the main characters of two beloved AMC series: watch now as Walter White, the scheming chemist and drug kingpin from "Breaking Bad" faces off against Rick Grimes, the emotionally scarred sheriff from "The Walking Dead," in rhyme. The lyrics are too juicy (and occasionally too filthy) to ruin, but this conceit works surprisingly well, with both men, each of them psychically damaged and emotionally unhinged, go after each other, name-checking major plot points in their respective series (so, yes, a spoiler alert is appropriate here). Fair warning: you'll probably laugh until you can't laugh anymore. Hopefully the next time the Epic Rap Battle team decides to pit two AMC characters against each other, we'll get a royal lyrical beat down between Cullen Bohannon from "Hell on Wheels" and Abe Woodhull from "Turn" (yes, I had to look those up). Watch the First Full Trailer for the 'Star Wars: Rebels' TV Series (VIDEO) Posted: Yesterday, every nerd you know was probably wearing his or her favorite "Star Wars" T-shirt. That's because May the Fourth has become an unofficial holiday for "Star Wars" fanatics the world over as "Star Wars" Day (May the Fourth be with you? Get it?) And as a way of giving the ever-hungry fans a bone on this special day, especially since the casting announcement for the new "Star Wars" already hit earlier in the week, Disney released the first full trailer for the upcoming "Star Wars: Rebels" animated series, scheduled to hit Disney XD this fall (via Variety). And it looks good. If you'll recall, the long running "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a computer animated series that took place between the events of "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," was unceremoniously shuttered after Disney acquired Lucasfilm and all related "Star Wars" properties. (The remaining episodes were recently released on Netflix.) Disney wasn't unhappy with the show, but they did want to refocus the animated universe to better reflect where the film franchise was headed, so they ported the team from "The Clone Wars" over to "Star Wars: Rebels" and fashioned a story that takes place between the events of "Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," or, for those of you who no longer live in your parents' basement, the first "Star Wars." The minute-long trailer introduces us to a host of new characters, including the R2-D2-style droid C1-101P (known as Chopper), Jedi knight Kanan Jarrus (voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr.) and Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), a young thief in the Han Solo mode; it also shows some familiar design elements (hello, Stormtroopers!) that we've come to know and love from the franchise. And while we're still not totally sold on the design of the show (we prefer the more overtly stylized look of Genndy Tartakovsky's original, micro-sized "Clone Wars" shorts), this one looks like it's going to have plenty of action, suspense, and humor, and should do well to tide us all over until next Christmas, when we all get to unwrap "Star Wars: Episode VII" together. Look for "Star Wars: Rebels" to debut this fall, and you can watch all of the episodes of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" (including those "lost episodes") on Netflix right now. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Are Teaming Up for a Mysterious New Project Posted: It's easy to forget that the epic saga of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, a whirlwind romance that has spurred seemingly endless speculation, sold countless gossip magazines, and made for some ridiculously attractive red carpet photos (see above), began on a movie set. They met (and fell in love) on the set of Doug Liman's comic book-y action movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." But, since then, the couple has yet to reappear together on screen... That is, until now. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Pitt and Jolie are going to join forces again, on a project that Jolie has written. While details on the project are (somewhat predictably) scarce, THR is theorizing that this could be a project that Jolie worked on a few years ago, about "a couple with issues who take a vacation in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage." The Reporter also notes that the couple's longstanding agreement that they won't work at the same time so that one of them can stay home with their lovely children would be easily bypassed if the whole family could come to the set and watch mom and dad work. It's unclear whether Jolie is looking to direct the project herself, since she's knee-deep in post-production on her true-life World War II story "Unbroken" for Universal. That film, with a script by the Coen Brothers and best-selling source material (the book was written by "Seabiscuit" scribe Laura Hillenbrand), is being positioned as a major Oscar contender, despite the fact that Jolie's last movie, a Serbian war romance called "In the Land of Blood and Honey," failed to stir critics or audiences. More details on the project will undoubtedly emerge once the endless speculation begins. Photo by Jason Merritt/Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
How to Get Through a Day or Night Gone Horribly Wrong (According to the Movies) Posted: In the new comedy, "Walk of Shame," after a decadent night on the town, local news anchor Meghan Miles (Elizabeth Banks) finds herself without her car, money, or phone, stranded in a shady part of town, and inconveniently wearing a skintight dress and high heels. As she tries to make her way to work for what turns out to be a very important interview, she's beset with horny cab drivers, clueless policemen and endless misunderstandings. If she'd just absorbed these lessons from similar movies, she'd have been home in half the time. (Moviefone does not guarantee these tips will get you home, especially if you are being hunted by the mafia, drug dealers, or corrupt cops -- or forced to drive cross-country with Zach Galifianakis.) Box Office: Is 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' a Success or Disappointment? Posted: Sometimes, you have to stand back and marvel (no pun intended) at the vast Hollywood hype machine working exactly as intended. This weekend, for instance, everyone expected "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" to kick off the summer season by opening unopposed at around $100 million, and it did, taking in an estimated $92.0 million in its first three days. The second biggest movie of the week, the 10-day-old "The Other Woman," came in with $14.2 million. And yet, even with numbers that big and victory that unequivocal, there is reason for Sony to feel restive and room to wonder why the movie didn't do better. In fact, a number of pundits guessed the weekend gross right on the nose; few actually expected it to break the $100 million barrier. Good as those numbers are, they're only so-so compared to both previous "Spider-Man" movies and to other Marvel superhero movies. Given the movie's sure-to-be stiff competition from such upcoming May releases as "Godzilla" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past," Sony would have been a lot happier with higher numbers that would have suggested the film has the momentum to outlast all newcomers and be the biggest hit of the summer. At $92 million, no one is thinking that. Again, everything and everyone in this sequel did what they were supposed to do. That includes participating in the massive worldwide awareness campaign (indeed, stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and others have spent weeks dutifully touring the globe and then every imaginable U.S. talk show, talking up their film). The film itself didn't much please critics, but that also is to be expected; among audiences, it scored a B+ at CinemaScore, meaning it should receive respectable word-of-mouth recommendations. More than many Marvel heroes, Spider-Man appeals to families and to young children. Studio polling suggests that a full 33 percent of this weekend's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" audience consisted of families, and that, of the remainder, 51 percent was under 25. So Sony's decision to reboot the franchise a couple years ago with a new director (Marc Webb) and newer, younger, fresher actors than Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst -- even though that pair and director Sam Raimi had scarcely just finished making three ultra-successful "Spider-Man" movies -- has apparently paid off. There's also the overseas grosses. Usually, these superhero spectacles do even better abroad than they do here, and "Amazing Spider-Man 2" has performed as expected there, too. In fact, its stars' globe-hopping has paid off to the tune of $277 million already earned overseas, three times as much as the movie has earned here. At this rate, it should have little trouble equaling or surpassing the $490 million foreign gross of 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" or that film's $752 million worldwide total. Still, this is a Marvel movie we're talking about, so the merely huge seems much more disappointing than the mundanely gargantuan. Remember, last year on this weekend, "Iron Man 3" opened with $174.4 million. And that was for its aging protagonist's third movie. Which, in turn, was the first one to show just how long the coattails of Marvel's "Avengers" were (as have the subsequent successes of last winter's "Thor: The Dark World" and last month's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," still the No. 4 movie this weekend, with a domestic take of $237 million to date). Six or eight years ago, could you have imagined a time when a lower-rung Marvel hero like Iron Man was a bigger box office draw than Spider-Man? And yet, that's how it is, since the "Spider-Man" franchise operates outside the Disney/Marvel wheelhouse that has so successfully pushed the "Avengers" family of heroes on all fronts. Even Fox's "X-Men" movies contain a multitude of heroes who can theoretically cross-promote each other (and sometimes do, even when Wolverine goes off the reservation by himself). Poor Spidey is out there all by his lonesome, with no super-friends to help enhance the drawing power of his franchise. But even by Spider-Man's own lofty standards, "Amazing Spider-Man 2" seems to fall short. Yes, the movie did open bigger than its predecessor's $62.0 million, but that was on a more competitive holiday weekend (Independence Day 2012), not an early-summer weekend that the movie had all to itself. Of course, the original "Spider-Man" with Tobey Maguire opened on such a weekend in 2002 (on May 3), and it debuted with $114.8 million, a record at the time. (And that was at 2002 ticket prices, with no 3D or IMAX to inflate the tally.) Maguire's last installment, 2007's "Spider-Man 3," opened the same weekend (May 4 of that year) and premiered with $151.1 million. So it's telling that no one expected "Amazing Spider-Man 2" to open anywhere in the ballpark that Maguire, Dunst, and director Sam Raimi built with the first three "Spider-Man" movies, much less in the even bigger arena that Disney and Marvel Studios have built for Iron Man, Captain America, and the other Avengers. They've all set the bar so high that not even a younger, lither Webslinger can vault over it. Photo courtesy Sony This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

These Brand-New 'Maleficent' Posters Have a Lot of Character (EXCLUSIVE) Posted: It's "Maleficent" week here at Moviefone, which means that each and every day we'll have a brand new exclusive from Disney's hotly anticipated "Sleeping Beauty" adaptation, culminating in a very special sweepstakes that could land you at the gala premiere -- talk about a fairy tale ending! But today, we're very pleased to debut new character posters from the movie (below). It might be called "Maleficent," and Angelina Jolie might be rightfully taking center stage, but that doesn't mean that there are a whole host of magical characters deserving of their own chance in the spotlight. Along with a beautiful poster featuring Jolie's very wicked witch, with an image that will probably be familiar to anyone who has been keeping up with the film's promotional campaign, we've got posters exclusively devoted to Princess Aurora aka Sleeping Beauty (Elle Fanning); Diaval (Sam Riley), Maleficent's confidant and shape shifter (he's the one who turns into a dragon in the trailer); Aurora's father, the shifty King Stefan (Sharlto Copley); and one devoted to the pixies, played (with some CGI-assistance) by Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, and Lesley Manville... plus a bunch of mysterious magical creatures like that cool tree monster from the trailer and what appear to be trolls reminiscent of the musical kind from "Frozen." Together, the posters present a wonderful glimpse of the mood and tone of "Maleficent." This is a magical and mysterious realm where fairy-tale characters aren't just the stuff of storybooks; they live and breathe and fight in elaborately choreographed battles. And it's going to be awesome. "Maleficent" opens May 30. Get your advance tickets now. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
