Marvel Countdown: Fox Considers What's Next After 'Deadpool'

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 09:30 PM PST

At the at the end of February, once Fox execs were able to climb atop their giant pile of Deadpool cash and look onward toward the horizon, they saw two dates that interested them. October 6, 2017 and January 12, 2018 have been staked for something Marvel-related from the studio who controls the film rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all characters therein. Meanwhile, the solo Gambit film, once tapped to star Channing Tatum has gone into release date limbo. The three likely candidates for those new dates are The New Mutants, X-Force, and Deadpool 2 (four candidates if Gambit is still, ahem, in the cards). Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is attached to direct The New Mutants and announced the completion of the screenplay’s first draft in October 2015...

This Story of Fans Saving a Movie Theater Deserves a Movie Of Its Own

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 08:00 PM PST

Audiences love a good underdog story, and critics love movies about the love of movies. Combine the two and you've got the story of the Zvezda Cinema in Belgrade, Serbia. As profiled by the Los Angeles Times this month, a large group of film lovers have occupied the 105-year-old theater for the past 15 months, and their tale would make for a great script.  Consider this part of the article describing the start of the lengthy sit-in, how easily it is to picture it playing out on the big screen: Fed up at the ransacking of Serbia's arts and armed with crowbars, walkie-talkies and flashlights, a small group of still-unknown film enthusiasts broke into the Star on Nov. 21, 2014, apparently scaling a tree behind it before crawling through a ventilation shaft into the...

'Justice League' Plucks J.K. Simmons From 'Spider-Man's World

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 06:35 PM PST

Some actors just own roles so outright that they become the definitive big screen version of that character. Patrick Stewart is simply Professor-X. Sure, James McAvoy is his replacement now, but even then X-Men had to go alternate reality so the two could coexist. J.K. Simmons is simply J. Jonah Jameson, the rageaholic editor of the Daily Bugle in Spider-Man. He's so good in the role that fans have been begging Sony to keep him around for any future Spidey movies, including the new one that just cast Zendaya.  Don't count on that happening, though. According to The Wrap, J.K. Simmons has just been hired to play another iconic comic character, only this time he's on the DC side of the fence. Zack Snyder has picked him to play Commissioner Gordon in Justice...

Zendaya Joins the Next 'Spider-Man' Movie, But Who Is She Playing?

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 04:30 PM PST

Big news in the Marvel movieverse today, as a whole ton of info was dropped for Captain America: Civil War (read my set visit reports over at Fandango), and while Marvel still hasn't revealed Tom Holland's Spider-Man yet, we know at least one person who'll be joining his first solo outing: the Disney Channel star Zendaya. Her role, however, is unknown at this time, though previous rumors have pegged her to be playing a new character named Michelle and not one of Peter Parker's two previous love interests, Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. Will she be a new love interest? Maybe she's playing a villain? We're not entirely sure, but her casting means the film -- due out on July 7, 2017 -- is beginning to piece together its ensemble.  Aside from Holland, who...

Movie News: Silly New 'Baywatch' Photo; Joseph Gordon-Levitt Departs 'The Sandman'

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST

Baywatch: Dwayne Johnson shared a new photo from the set of Baywatch. Johnson is pictured with Kelly Rohrback, who is playing C.J. Parker, a character memorably portrayed by Pamela Anderson in the original TV show. We don't know yet if their relationship extends beyond the beach, but they certainly seem to be having fun together in the photo. The movie will open on May 19, 2017. [Instagram via Colllider]   The Sandman: Eric Heisserer (The Thing) has been hired to write a new version of the screenplay for The Sandman, based on the graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman. However, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was attached to produce, and possibly star and direct, has departed the project, stating: "I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don't see...

See Batman Get the Upper Hand (or Boot) on Superman in New 'Batman v Superman' Images

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 01:30 PM PST

New promotional materials for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have been coming at a fast and furious pace. It might feel a bit dizzying to hear about the forthcoming R-rated home video edition, a rumor about Ben Affleck doing rewrites on the script during production, director Zack Snyder's idle musing about a future George Washington movie and more. At heart, though, the movie revolves around the titular characters, the Dark Knight facing off against the Caped Crusader. Two new official photos reinforce that focus. First, we have a striking image of Superman (Henry Cavill) striding through what is presumably a government building (above). There is a great purposefulness to his walk, as is expected ot the man of steel, owning up to his responsibilities. The other new...
