The New Documentary 'Beware the Slenderman' Finds Harsh Reality in the Urban Legend Posted: 21 Mar 2016 09:30 PM PDT In a Milwaukee suburb in 2014, two twelve year old girls took their friend to the woods and stabbed her multiple times to win the favor of internet boogeyman “Slenderman,” a lanky, faceless giant in a black suit and tie. They were hoping to kill their victim, then walk hundreds of miles to the national park where Slenderman’s mansion of devoted “proxies” could live protected for all eternity. The victim lived (and has since recovered) and the would-be killers were found by police wandering down a highway still carrying the bloodied knife. The event, so appalling in its crime and so baffling in its motivation, made national headlines. Irene Taylor Brodsky’s documentary Beware the Slenderman is gut-wrenching in its attempt to answer the questions... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

SXSW Festival Buzz Easily Pegs 'Under the Shadow' as This Year's 'The Babadook' Posted: 21 Mar 2016 06:30 PM PDT Film fests are often the “ground zero” for breakout indie hits and last year saw two horror films that benefited from strong festival word-of-mouth. David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows and Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook were pushed alongside studio releases as horror films worth paying attention to. A teen enjoying The Babadook on their laptop might not know it was a festival favorite, but discerning movie-goers always keep an eye on festival buzz to see when and from where "the next Babadook” will arise. In fact, early buzz on Under the Shadow, which screened at SXSW, was explicitly being labeled as “the next Babadook.” The comparison is an easy one, as both follow a depressed mother raising a child alone, while the child experiences... DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch Posted: 21 Mar 2016 04:00 PM PDT New Indie: If I were to designate a movie as Most Overlooked by the Oscars this year, it would probably be Grandma (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), one of my favorite films of 2015. In a less competitive year, it seems unthinkable that Lily Tomlin’s knockout performance in the title role wouldn’t have gotten more love. She plays a semi-retired poet who spends a picaresque day revisiting old friends and lovers in Los Angeles while trying to get together the money to pay for an abortion for her granddaughter (played by Julia Garner of The Americans). Among those whose paths Tomlin crosses are Sam Elliott – for once given a role that’s not the usual “Sam Elliott” we’ve come to know and love over the years, and turning it into one of the... Kristen Bell Says 'Frozen 2' Is About to Warm Up Posted: 21 Mar 2016 02:30 PM PDT Almost exactly a year ago, we heard that a sequel to the animated smash Frozen was officially happening. At the time, all we knew was that directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee were developing the movie and that Josh Gad would reprise his voice role as the snowman Olaf. Now Kristen Bell has confirmed that she will also be reprising her role in Frozen 2. In a new interview, she told Collider that she expects to begin recording dialogue very, very soon: "They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month. The story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out. That’s why it took them so long to even announce that we were... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
