The Last Sci-Fi Blog: Found Footage Science Fiction That is Worth a Look Posted: 10 Mar 2016 08:00 PM PST With 10 Cloverfield Lane arriving this weekend, everyone on the internet has been revisiting 2008's Cloverfield and, hopefully, they've remembered that it is terrific and one of the best found footage movies ever made. Although this aesthetic is most commonly used for low budget horror movies, this science fiction thriller about a giant monster rampaging through New York City used this POV to ground its biggest ideas and lend a personal touch to concepts that would have been abstract at another scale. It's brilliant. But Cloverfield isn't the only great found footage science fiction movie out there. Here's your homework for this weekend. The Bay The best science fiction often carries a message or contains social commentary. There's... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Star Wars' Breakout Daisy Ridley Could Be the New Lara Croft Posted: 10 Mar 2016 06:00 PM PST We already know she's good at digging for buried valuables. Well, she's good at playing a character who's good at such tasks, as the scavenger turned interplanetary hero Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now newcomer Daisy Ridley could take on another iconic franchise and play another kickass action movie lead. Deadline is reporting that the British actress is in the running to star as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot. Ridley is not necessarily a frontrunner for the role of the adventuring archeologist, but obviously she's the most noteworthy in contention given that before being cast in the recent Star Wars sequel she was a complete unknown. And as the movie's main protagonist she won millions of fans over and has broken out big time. Therefore, what... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
First 'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' Trailer Turns Andy Samberg Into an R-Rated Justin Bieber Posted: 10 Mar 2016 04:30 PM PST Andy Samberg is the kind of inherently funny guy who just seemed destined for comedy fame. That destiny wouldn't have happened quite as quickly as it did were it not for his work with The Lonely Island. Thanks to a few clutch songs on Saturday Night Live that went viral (the first being "Lazy Sunday"), Samberg and his fellow Lonely Islanders Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone became the go-to team for creating songs both hilarious and also insidiously catchy in their own right. The Lonely Island don't exclusively do musical spoofs -- they also made the great, underseen Hot Rod -- but for their next project together they are going all in on pop culture. It's called Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and if the first red band trailer for it is... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Captain America: Civil War' Trailer Shows Off Spider-Man Posted: 10 Mar 2016 03:09 PM PST It's absurd how many different superheroes and villains will be gracing the big screen this year. Deadpool, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Doomsday, Lex Luthor, and Aquaman (so we hear) will have all thrown down in movie theaters before we even get to Captain America: Civil War on May 6. It may not be an Avengers movie, but its roster of players is even wider than Age of Ultron's. Fans are rabid for any new imagery of or info on the sequel from Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo and now thanks to a new trailer for the movie, there is plenty to sink your teeth into. The world has been plunged into even more political chaos since the events of Ultron and it is tearing apart the very team the world looks to for... Posted: 10 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST "Sports movies are all about people who make the impossible possible and that's what Cuyler Smith has done with this show. He's reimagined these fantastic, and often forgotten sports classics in the absolutely perfect nostalgic way." That's what our friend Germain Lussier, writer for io9 and notorious pop art junkie, told us when he brought to our attention a new original art show starting this Friday at Gallery 1988. And now that we've seen what Smith has created for it, we couldn't agree more. In case the top images don't already make it obvious enough, Smith has created old school trading cards for cinematic sports icons. And we're not talking about just a few posters done as an homage to the format. These are actual trading cards... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Netflix's Biggest Movie Yet May Be 'Bright,' Starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton Posted: 10 Mar 2016 01:30 PM PST Just last week, we heard about a cool new project that would reunite Will Smith and Joel Edgerton with David Ayer, their Suicide Squad director. Titled Bright, it's based on an original screenplay by Max Landis (American Ultra, Victor Frankenstein) that was described as "a contemporary cop thriller, but with fantastical elements." Now we're hearing via The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix is in negotiations to acquire and produce the package. If everything works out, it would be the biggest movie deal yet for the streaming service. More details about the story have also been revealed. Reportedly, Bright is described as a "mixing of End of Watch, Ayer’s own 2012 gritty cop movie, and Alien Nation, the 1988 sci-fi thriller that starred James...
