Here Are the Top 10 Movie Twists of All Time

Posted:

Planet of the ApesWho doesn't love a good twist ending to a movie? The folks at CineFix have released another great video roundup, this time for the 10 best twists in movie history.

Now, if you don't want to be spioled, stop right here. And certainly don't watch the video, since they ruin, as they say, "like 47 and a half movies." (In fact, there's probably someone out there yelling at our use of the photo above, from 1968's "Planet of the Apes." This is how bad spoiler-phobia has gotten.)

In any case, they mention many of the usual suspects, including "The Usual Suspects." "The Empire Strikes Back" is not No. 1 (we won't spoil you on what did take the top spot), but ranks very highly. And no wonder — even kids today can't get over that movie's big reveal.

'Zootopia' May Be the 'Most Easter Egg-Packed Movie Ever Made by Disney'

Posted:

Disney's ZOOTOPIAThis weekend, "Zootopia" joins the illustrious Disney legacy of people-less, all-animal animated movies, like "Robin Hood" and "The Lion King." Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore bring us a new take on the genre by creating a world not unlike our own, filled only with anthropomorphic animals, some of whom call the big, sprawling city of Zootopia their home. The movie tackles a number of social and emotional issues, while, at the same time, breaking new ground in computer animation.

We sat down with directors Moore and Howard to talk about the early days of "Zootopia" and the long road to becoming (potentially) one of the most important (and impactful) Disney movies to date.ZOOTOPIA directors byron howard and rich mooreIn early concept art, "Zootopia" seemed to have a very different look and story. Can you talk about how the movie went from space bunny adventure to animal metropolis film noir?

Byron Howard: One of the ideas was about animals in space hunting space animals. The other idea was the "The Island of Doctor Meow" that had a Roger Corman B-movie feel about a mad scientist who had a savage serum. So you see little bits of these ideas sort of floating around back then. All these ideas had anthropomorphic animals in them cause I loved "Robin Hood" growing up. John Lasseter was also a fan of that genre of Disney classic cartoons. He said, "I will fully support any movie that features animals running around in tiny clothing." He got on board and loved the idea of doing it. He really did charge us with making it different from any other animals movie before. He said, "Don't think about story, just go off and do research."

We did about seven or eight months of research. We talked to animal experts and sociologists. Experts about how cities get built and formed and then he sent us down here to Disney's Animal Kingdom and we talked to experts down here who helped us figure out animals personalities. And then finally he said, "Go to Kenya."

Kenya is amazing. He sent about 14 of us, including a lot of our leadership in different departments of the film, to Kenya. And they were all looking for something different. The animators were looking for movement and how animals' fur behaves in light, and we came back completely changed and making the film way more in-depth than when we first left. It really did change our viewpoint on what we were going to do.

Computer-generated animation has come a long, long way. In older movies, hair was more like a blob on a character's head. Now you can see the breakthroughs Disney's made, from the hair in "Tangled" to the fur in "Zootopia." It's outstanding.

Rich Moore:
Our technology took a huge step forward on the movie "Big Hero 6," because they came up with this new software with a rendering system and lighting system called Hyperion. That makes it possible now to just render out an incredible amount of information per frame on our films. We now have the ability to kind of light scenes more organically, from where light sources come from. The process is sped up so much faster now, and when we're reviewing animation we're able to see it looking more like the finished frame.A WORLD FOR BIG AND SMALL â€Speaking of "Big Hero 6," that reminds me of how Disney's movies have been doing a great job of teaching audiences important moral lessons. That movie dealt with loss, and "Zootopia" feels current in exploring the need for empathy as a theme for the characters living in this big city. Is that something you looked to bring forward?

Howard: That's a very smart question. You're actually the first one to articulate the question about empathy, which is a central part of what Judy is, I think in building who Judy [Hopps] (Ginnifer Goodwin) is as a character. I go back to the original "Superman" movie, with Christopher Reeve. What I really love about that film wasn't that he was a superhero it was that he was compassionate. That's what I think made that film work for me when I saw it when I was 10.

I saw this person who cared and wanted to make a difference in the world, who had these feelings and this desire to make people happy, and I think that's where Judy comes from, too; the fact that she sort of has this great Frank Capra-esque core but is still a flawed character that has something to learn, to mature. She does and she becomes a more whole character through this very challenging relationship that she has with this very smart fox. They're both incredibly smart characters. And the fact that she wants to do good in the world but he keeps knocking down her sort of sunny disposition in saying, "Look, it's not that easy. Things aren't like that." The fact that they actually bond over when he was a kid, he wanted the same things. That gave us very strong threads to pull on in the story, and I think that's why people really are connecting with her. I think everyone wants to make a difference throughout the world but we find it's sometimes more challenging than we anticipate.

Moore: I think that the key was letting Judy make a mistake. Letting her not be perfect, not a sterling kind of Eagle Scout of a character that never makes a mistake. The fact that if Judy, who is this pure of heart, can have such a blind spot in her life, then it can happen to anyone out of naivety. We knew that once he had Judy as a main character, we knew that we were going with the theme, it was very important to us that she not just be a cartoon character that's just a champion for everything good, but that our main character, though enlightened and progressive and thinking that she is kind of above the way that her parents think, is susceptible to these things, too.MR. BIG â€Lastly, I know you guys have fun with the Easter eggs. What do you suggest audiences keep an eye out for in "Zootopia"?

Howard: This is perhaps the most Easter egg-packed movie ever made by Disney.

Moore: Hidden Mickey-ed movie. If you like sign gags, there's tons of them all throughout. As soon as you get into the city of "Zootopia," there are sign gags. If you like silly puns, there's some and there's groaners. If you like Disney references, I think it may be the first time, maybe "Aladdin" had a few with the Genie, but we went for it because we wanted it to feel like our world. In their world, they have their version of Disney movies. Let's show 'em.

Howard: Here's one that no one knows yet. Our character designer is a big fan of Patrick Swayze's "Road House," and one of the villains wears a t-shirt that is a homage to the bar in "Road House."

Disney's "Zootopia" hits theaters Friday.

Spoiler Alert: No 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Screeners Are Coming, for Anyone

Posted:

Hodor! "Game of Thrones" Season 6 premieres April 24, and we will all have to watch each episode as a TV viewing family. For the first time, HBO has decided not to send out any "Game of Thrones" review copies to press. Last year, they doled out the first four hours to the media and someone effed up, 'cause the content leaked onto BitTorrent before the premiere.

This is why we can't have nice things.

"We're not sending out press copies this year, anywhere in the world," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly. "There will be no copies for review." He added that "it's painful" for showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss when the leaks happen because they're throwing a surprise party for all of us and someone popped the balloons.

"When you have press copies, inevitably friends ask, 'Can I see your copy?'" Lombardo added. "There are things that happen. We talked about the upsides and downsides. Some of the press are fans who might be disappointed, but they'll understand."

Many fans probably don't care, 'cause it's not like they got special treatment to see the episodes in advance, and now we're all on the same level playing field. Anyone who was unintentionally spoiled last year may be cheering, 'cause the odds of that happening again just went down. However, anyone hoping for early episode leaks is probably out of luck ... although they can just go to Watchers on the Wall for casting and filming spoilers.

As you wait for Season 6 to start, why not check out this cool new behind-the-scenes video:

Watch Margot Robbie Adorably Fail at 'The Whisper Challenge'

Posted:

is so gorgeous and charming, she has fully convinced us that "llama shoe" is really a thing. The Australian "Whisey Tango Foxtrot" star, soon to be seen as Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad," was on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" Tuesday night, and earned a sad 0 for 2 in a game of "The Whisper Challenge."

The Aussie first missed "Bondi Beach," which you might've expected her to get since it's a famous beach in Sydney, but Jimmy was pronouncing it wrong. The best part was when Jimmy kept whispering "Labradoodle" and Margot insisted, like five times, that it looked like "llama shoe." When she finally got it, Jimmy did a little victory dance for the both of them.

By the way, the clip includes a references to Prince Harry, which is tied to Margot's story that she unwittingly followed Prince Harry into a photo booth at a party. He was in Stealth Mode!

Watch both videos here:

'Nina': See First Trailer for Zoe Saldana's Controversial Nina Simone Biopic

Posted:

The 22nd Annual ELLE Women In Hollywood Awards - ArrivalsThe good news is that Nina Simone is still getting a lot of attention. Fans applauded the 2015 documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone?" and now, if they want, fans can watch Zoe Saldana as "The High Priestess of Soul" in "Nina."

The biopic's first poster was shared yesterday by Entertainment Weekly, followed today by the first trailer, which co-stars as Simone's assistant-turned-manager, whom she met while in isolation in France.

"Nina" has had a long, rough road to this point, and it's still facing controversy. According to EW, Mary J. Blige was set to star back in 2010, but dropped out from scheduling conflicts. Saldana has faced criticism for being too light-skinned to play the legendary singer, and the actress doesn't seem to disagree.

Last June, Saldana told BET she turned the film down for a full year before saying yes, and only joined the project after people she deemed "more physically right for the part" passed on it. "If people would have known the whole story about what happened, they might have a different point of view. I did give it thought, and at the end of the day, I'm proud of my decision." Saldana also shared frustration with the film being kept on the shelf for three years, telling BET, "It's unfortunate that political and business reasons have prevented the director [Cynthia Mort] and myself getting our vision for what this story is, and a lot of inexperienced people have had undeserving power over this film."

But it's coming out now, and you can see "Nina" in theaters and on VOD on April 22.

Netflix Renews 'Fuller House' for Season 2, 'Coming Soon'

Posted:

Fuller HouseWant more '90s nostalgia, Olsen twins jokes, and Internet chatter about Stephanie Tanner's boobs? You got it, dude! Less than a week after fans binge-watched "Fuller House" Season 1, Netflix has announced a follow-up is go for launch:

No chill for the Tanners! Critics did not take kindly to the "Full House" continuation, but who cares. Fans downed it whole over the weekend, and even though Netflix says Season 2 is "coming soon," it will probably take them a year, or close to it, to give us another batch of 13 episodes to watch within the space of 24 hours. That's Netflix for ya! And we love it.

It may seem like tempting fate to give fans a second helping of super-sweet nostalgia -- what if they get sick from overload and it taints the whole series? -- but the early response to this news has been very positive. This is basically the reaction:

Question: Do you think one or both of the Olsen twins would be willing to make at least a cameo in Season 2, now that they've seen the fan response to Season 1?

For the Kids: Here's Jennifer Garner Reading 'Go the F—k to Sleep'

Posted:

Jennifer Garner is Hollywood's Everymom, and with her cute dimples and sweet voice, she can even make "Go the F--k to Sleep" feel like a warm hug.

Garner is not the first celeb to read Adam Mansbach's foul-mouthed bedtime story. As Entertainment Weekly listed, Samuel L. Jackson recorded an audiobook version, "Reading Rainbow" star LeVar Burton read the book to raise money for charity, and German auteur Werner Herzog even voiced a recording that played at the New York Public Library.

Jen Garner's reading arrives via a Vanity Fair video, the same Vanity Fair she covers with a story about protecting her three children from the "scandal" of her breakup with Ben Affleck. We see Jen lounging by the pool as she reads off the f-bombs, even doing some very Actress Mom-like improv to illustrate soaring eagles:

"The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest, and the creatures who crawl, run, and creep;
I know you're not thirsty, that's bullsh-t, stop lying;
Lie the f--k down my darling, and sleep"

But maybe their dad's creepy back tattoo is keeping them up at night?

Does this story work, parents? Have you tried reading it to your own kids, or would you not dare, in case they started quoting it back to you?

Holy Neptune! New 'Finding Dory' Trailer Brings Fresh Fish, Old Friends

Posted:

Dory may have trouble remembering things, but Disney/Pixar clearly hasn't forgotten what fans loved about her the first time, and it's all on display in the adorable new "Finding Dory" trailer.

This second full trailer was just released on "The Ellen Show," giving us a better taste of the movie than the first teaser, which was basically a sneak peek scene. The story, set six months after "Finding Nemo," follows Dory's () search for her parents, who'll be voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy. The trailer hints to some heart-tugging homesickness:

Dory: "I have a family. I miss 'em. You know what that feels like?"
Marlin: "Yes."

This really feels like a "Finding Nemo" sequel, bringing back Nemo and Marlin, teacher Mr. Ray, and even the rad sea turtles giving Marlin another sweet (terrifying!) ride. But to differentiate this story, we get a bunch of new friends, like Destiny the whale shark (voiced by Kaitlin Olson) and Bailey the snub-nosed beluga whale (Ty Burrell). But the trailer shows that Destiny isn't really a *new* friend to Dory, and we may get the answer on how Dory knows how to speak whale.

Here's the trailer:

That octopus (voiced by Ed O'Neill) is already stealing everything in sight, and we can't wait to see more of him and the rest of the gang when the film is released on June 17.

Leo DiCaprio's Girl Scout Cookie Love Inspired Some Hilarious Memes

Posted:

won everything at the 2016 Oscars -- his first Academy Award, Twitter's record-breaking love, a packet of delicious Trefoils, and Reddit's creativity to turn that Girl Scout cookie excitement into a meme.

Chris Rock may not have really sold $65K worth of Girl Scout cookies during the show, but Leo (or someone who does these things for him) clearly spent $5 on a box of Trefoils, and "The Revenant" star's little tongue came out in a mix of package-opening concentration and MUST HAVE COOKIES anticipation. It was too much for the Internet to resist, so it became a Photoshop Battle on Reddit.

Here's the original image they worked with, and some of the most creative transformations:

At least he enjoyed himself -- in real life, and in the fantasy world of Internet memes. Well done, people with too much time on their hands!

'Pretty Little Liars' Season 6, Episode 18 Recap: Aria Is Hospitalized

Posted:

PLL recap Things that happened on "Pretty Little Liars" this week: Aria managed to light herself on fire, Ezra lost all remaining semblance of sanity, and we finally found out why Spencer and Toby broke up. Spoiler alert: it was slightly political. Yep, PLL is getting real, and we're going along for the ride. (Also, by "ride" we definitely mean the supped-up Monster Truck that tried to run down Emily.)

In Which Aria and Ezra Make Everyone Uncomfortable

Remember when Aria (sorry, Reverend Aria) officiated her parents wedding and it was super weird in every sense of the word? Turns out A was at the nuptials, and left Aria some deranged messages in the flower arrangements. Wow, zero chill to be found. In other news, Aria and Ezra are now co-writing a book together (the natural next step in their totally normal not-at-all strange relationship), and Ezra reveals that he wants Aria to voice the character of his ex-girlfriend, Nicole, who died in a mysterious overseas accident. Or something. Honestly, it's all so bizarre and confusing, we're happier remembering the simpler times when Ezra was a mere teacher having an affair with his underage student.

In Which Toby Punches Caleb, Feels All the Feelings to Be Felt

Everyone's favorite kindergarten cop is having a lot of feelings, and as usual they are both hilarious and vaguely pathetic. Poor Toby is all rilled up thinking Caleb leaked news about his girlfriend's abortion, so he wanders over to House Hastings and punches him in the face. The good news? Spencer eventually tells him the truth about Caleb. The bad news? She reveals that A is back, and knowing Toby he's going to react by accidentally getting high AF on gummy bears.

Also, we get a flashback to Spencer and Toby's breakup, and it turns out they parted ways after having a pregnancy scare their sophomore year. Toby wanted to keep the baby and move in with Spencer, but she seemed somewhat iffy and admitted that she considered an abortion. Way to be progressive, PLL! Also this entire scene takes place in the dark, because apparently Spencer's dorm doesn't have lightbulbs.

In Which Aria Explodes into Flame

Hanna's going to the chapel, and she's going to get married! Or, at least she's going to have a bridal party, which seems like a terrible idea considering the fact that most parties in Rosewood involve murder. Naturally, Hanna's soiree ends up being a huge fail because A programs Logan's "smart loft" to partially explode. In fact, Aria bursts into flames. Poor girl ends up in the ER, and then Ezra wanders up unannounced like the desperate semi-drunk that he is and makes her read with him while she fights back tears. Oh, and this is after she's forced to go to the police station for a line-up. Sigh, her life.

In Which Emily Does Something Useful

Important town update: Rosewood has a greasy car shop! We know this because Emily spends most of the episode trolling around it in an attempt to find the car that almost ran her over. Obviously she fails (typical), but she does find out that Melissa isn't a suspect, and manages to use her powers of sleuthing to discover that Mona called Charlotte at the diner on the night she died. No clue what Mona's up to, but we will henceforth be referring to Emily as Sherlock Holmes. She's literally the only liar with any detective skills, and that includes professional policeman Toby Cavanaugh.
