12 Great YA Books That Could Be the Next 'Divergent' Posted: The release of "Allegiant" signals the inevitable end of the "Divergent" franchise (one final installment, "Ascendant," comes out next year). So it's time to examine what as-yet-unmade young adult novels have a chance to join "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games" on the list of Best YA Films. Although "Divergent" and "Maze Runner" have been commercially-successful dystopian stories, and realistic contemporary tales like "The Fault in Our Stars" have generated critical appeal, many more young adult adaptations have failed to launch -- even ones with built-in fandoms at the ready. Here are 12 optioned YA novels worthy of the big screen. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The CW Renews 'The Flash,' 'Arrow,' 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,' and More Posted: And you get a renewal ... and you get a renewal ... and you get a renewal! The CW went on a renewing spree today, handing out the good news to nearly every show in its lineup. New shows "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" and "Legends of Tomorrow" will both get second seasons. Also coming back are: "Jane the Virgin," "The Flash," "iZombie," "Arrow," "Supernatural," "The 100," "Vampire Diaries," "The Originals," and "Reign." Not returning are "America's Next Top Model," which is moving to VH1, and "Beauty and the Beast." The pickup for "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is a bit of a (nice) surprise, as its ratings are very low. But the series did win a Golden Globe, and the musical comedy pairs well with "Jane the Virgin." The network noted that some of these shows won't be back until midseason or even summer 2017. Marvel's 'Luke Cage' to Premiere September 30 on Netflix Posted: "Daredevil" returns to Netflix for a second season next week, and another Marvel superhero won't be too far behind. "Luke Cage," starring Mike Colter as the unbreakable hero, will premiere September 30. Colter revealed the news in a video at the New York City premiere of "Daredevil."
Luke Cage was first introduced on "Jessica Jones" last fall, and the new show will be set a few months after the events of that series. Here's the official synopsis: "After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin. Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city - forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury." Mahershala Ali will play big bad Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, a nightclub owner, while Alfre Woodard stars as local politician Mariah Dillard. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Harry Styles May Join Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk': Report Posted: Christopher Nolan's upcoming WWII action-thriller "Dunkirk" may be getting a major dose of star power: Deadline reports that One Direction frontman Harry Styles may join the flick in a supporting role. According to the trade, "multiple sources" confirm that Styles has been offered the as-yet-unknown part, which is not believed to be one of the leads. The singer reportedly "impressed the filmmakers with his readings for the part," though studio Warner Bros. declined to comment on the potential casting when reached by Deadline. Though Styles has appeared on television and the big screen before, it's usually been in a musical capacity, either performing solo or with 1D. He's rumored to be starring in the upcoming second season of Fox horror-comedy series "Scream Queens," and has been courted for film roles before, most famously by The Weinstein company for the flick "Tulip Fever," which Styles reportedly turned down. The wild-haired heartthrob would join the previously-cast Tom Hardy, who's also rumored to be playing a supporting role, while producers are reportedly searching for unknowns to play the film's leads. "Dunkirk" tells the story of the rescue of the titular French town in WWII, described by Deadline as "a British military operation that saved some 330,000 Allied soldiers trapped in the harbor and surrounded by the German army. Winston Churchill described it as 'a miracle of deliverance.'" "Dunkirk" is due for release on July 21, 2017. Stay tuned for more casting details as they become available. Leslie Jones 'Ghostbusters' Role Originally Written for Melissa McCarthy Posted: After the awesome new trailer for Paul Feig's "Ghostbusters" reboot dropped last week, there was a lot of backlash surrounding Leslie Jones's character, MTA worker Patty Tolan. While some fans lashed out at the fact that Jones, the film's only black cast member in one of the four main roles, was playing a subway employee while three white women were playing scientists, Jones and Feig have vehemently defended the part. And it turns out that originally, a white actress was supposed to play it. That's the word from Feig himself, who spoke to Empire magazine this week in an interview breaking down all the major moments from the trailer, including the introduction of Patty. As Feig tells it, when he and co-writer Katie Dippold were penning the script, they had initially pegged Jones's costar, Melissa McCarthy, for the flamboyant part of Patty. "... [W]e had written the role with Melissa in mind, but then I thought I've seen Melissa play a brash, larger than life character," Feig told the magazine. "She's done it in my movies before!" Feig is, of course, talking about his many previous collaborations with McCarthy, including her starmaking turn in Feig's directorial debut, "Bridesmaids," which nabbed the actress an Oscar nomination and international adoration. After Feig and Dippold reconsidered the casting, the director told Empire that he then thought of Jones, the "Saturday Night Live" cast member who's been wowing audiences with her take-no-prisoners performance on the sketch show since 2014. "She's one of my favourite people on the planet," Feig gushed about the comedian. "I don't normally like comedy that's big and loud, but she is able to pull that off in a way that feels real and it's her. And when I make a movie, I want to find the funniest people I know and once I know what's the funniest thing about them I want that to be the thing that I put on screen and let shine. This is the role that Leslie can shine comedically in. If you've ever seen her do stand-up, it's just who she is. I wanted to unleash Leslie on the public in the same way we unleashed Melissa on the public in 'Bridesmaids,' with a very showy role." Here's hoping "Ghostbusters" can do for Jones what it did for McCarthy -- and, as Feig said on Twitter, that the haters can "Grow up and leave [his] cast alone."
