'Pretty Little Liars' Midseason Finale Recap: The New A Is Revealed in a *Shocking* Twist

Posted:

It's the mid-season finale of "Pretty Little Liars," aka the most frustrating night of the year! But despite false promises of huge reveals in the past, we actually found out who A is during this episode. Shocking, right? Also, two liars coupled up with their OG love connections, one liar potentially got murdered, and Toby Cavanaugh revealed that he can speak French (LOLOLOL). Just another lovely day in America's most charming town! Keep reading to find out who A is.

In Which Ali Goes Crazy, Pulls a Toby and Accidentally Gets High

Ok, first up let's talk about Ali, who is having delusional visions of both her dead mother and Detective Wilden due to being high AF on pain killers. In fact, her visions are so bad that the liars have to babysit her, only they totally fail due to being terrible at everything, and she wanders off to a church to commence ~*shaking and crying*~. Poor Ali is in such a state that she eventually asks Emily to check her into a psychiatric ward, and it's like, way to take care of your mental health, Ali, but maybe next time just visit a doctor and change your medication dosages? Just a thought.

In Which Aria and Ezra Morph into #Ezria

Guys, we're so worried about Ezra. Not only is he a shell of his former stalker self, he's sunk into a deep depression over his dead girlfriend. You know, the one who mysteriously disappeared in the forest? Or something? Anyway, poor Ezra is the human equivalent of an emotional roller coaster, and all he does is weep, wear unbuttoned henley shirts, and have sex with Aria. Because yes, these two totally hook up to celebrate the completion of their weird joint novel, which is super exciting news for all of us who were fans of their inappropriate student-teacher relationship.

In Which Caleb and Hanna Morph into #Haleb

Remember last week when Hanna decided to tell A she'd murdered Charlotte? Well, this week Caleb helps Hanna concoct a devious plan: to sit in a cabin surrounded by a homemade electric fence. And for those of you wondering how Caleb built said electric fence, he Googled it. Naturally, Caleb and Hanna's alone time in the woods leads to some serious bonding, in which Hanna reveals that she never wanted to break up with him. A makeout session follows said reveal (because duh), which is super awkward considering that Caleb had just come off having sex with Spencer—who, by the way, dropped the L-word on him. This is all going so well!

In Which Toby and Spencer Do Not Become #Spoby, and Instead Get Their Awkward Sleuth on

Before you start feeling too bad for Spencer, she spends most of this episode chilling with Toby "Kindergarten Cop" Cavanaugh, who's taken to wearing button down flannel shirts and thick-frame glasses. Unleash your inner hipster, Toby! Feel the rain on your skin! Anyway, these two don't hook up during their time together thanks to Mona third-wheeling it, but they do break into Radley's basement and find a hidden file revealing some huge news. Turns out Charlotte was adopted by the DiLaurentis family, and her real mother was someone named Mary Drake. Hmmm...the hilariously convoluted plot thickens.

In Which There's a *Huge* Reveal

Ok, so here's the deal: After promising Hanna that he'd never let anything happen to her, Caleb and his fellow liars abandon her in the cabin to go check on their fence, and she's promptly stolen via a hole in the floor. Because of course. Fortunately, Caleb had the presence of mind to set up video cameras, which show none other than Jessica DiLaurentis wandering through the woods.

But wait, you say. She's dead! Correct, however what we see (and the liars most definitely do not) is Jessica revealing that she is in fact Mary Drake, Mrs. DiLaurentis' twin sister who's avenging her daughter's death. And her accomplice? None other than Alison's boyfriend, Elliot, who is 100 percent evil, used to date Charlotte, and went to the trouble of getting a life-like Wilden mask just to scare the sh*t out of Ali. Mic drop.

Oh, and if you're wondering what happened to Hanna, she may or may not be dead / not on the show anymore. Second mic drop.

Han Solo 'Star Wars' Spinoff Narrows Actor Shortlist: Report

Posted:

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' "Beautiful Creatures" - ArrivalsThe casting process for the upcoming Han Solo-centric "Star Wars" spinoff flick has been happening for more than three months now, and after coming up with an initial shortlist of actors to play a younger version of the iconic Harrison Ford character, producers have now reportedly whittled that list down to a top three.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, filmmakers have been working overtime to make a decision on the young man who will fill Ford's shoes, with several stars being flown to London just last weekend to meet with producers. A clearer picture of the frontrunners has emerged, with THR reporting that Alden Ehrenreich (the "Hail, Caesar!" scene-stealer, pictured above), Jack Reynor ("Transformers: Age of Extinction"), and Taron Egerton ("The Kingsman," "Eddie the Eagle") all made the cut for in-person tests, though the trade stresses that "it's unclear if these were costume tests or screen tests" (meaning the seemingly neverending casting process may still have a ways to go).

In addition to those three names, it's also believed that actors Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Emory Cohen ("Brooklyn"), and several stars of Richard Linklater's upcoming "Everybody Wants Some" also met with producers at some point, though it appears that they did not make it as far as the aforementioned trio.

This is all still a guessing game at this point, since it's unlikely Disney will tip its hand on the casting process until the chosen actor signs on the dotted line. Still, it's good to know that filmmakers -- including directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("21 Jump Street," "The LEGO Movie") -- are taking the process so seriously, and want to make sure Ford's considerable "Star Wars" legacy is honored properly with the right performer.

THR's report indicates that the young Solo won't make his debut until his own spinoff flick hits theaters, contradicting earlier speculation that the character could pop up for a cameo in this fall's "Rogue One." Guess we'll have to wait and see on that one.

The as-yet-untitled Solo film is due in theaters on May 25, 2018.

Sally Field Did Not Like Her 'Amazing Spider-Man' Aunt May Role

Posted:

sally field, amazing spider-man, aunt maySuperhero movies usually try to snag a few A-listers or award winners to boost their credibility, and that was certainly true of the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise, which launched back in 2012. Oscar winner Sally Field took on the role of Aunt May, Peter Parker's mother figure, but according to the actress, it wasn't exactly a great part.

In an interview with Howard Stern, Field was asked if she liked the films, and she didn't mince her words.

"Not especially," the actress replied. "It's not my kind of movie."

Field went on to explain that she only took the role because of the movie's producer, Laura Ziskin, an old friend and former producing partner of hers. Ziskin passed away in 2011, and it was understood that "Spider-Man" would be her last film, Field said, so she wanted to be there for her friend and work with her one last time.

As for the actual acting, Field admitted that "not a great deal" of thought went into prepping to play Aunt May, since "it's really hard to find a three-dimensional character" in such a minor, under-developed role.

"You work at it as much as you can, but you can't put 10 pounds of s--t in a five-pound bag," Field told Stern.

It's hardly trashing the film, but it's certainly refreshing to hear an actor speak so candidly about a role. Field knew she wasn't the star or the main draw, and she played her part as such, which is really all you can ask of a veteran professional.

And that's not to say she had a bad experience making the movie. Field told Stern that working with titular star Andrew Garfield was "fun," and called him "a lovely, lovely actor."

"I loved being there for the people," the actress added.

Just don't expect her to star in any more superhero flicks again.

'Indiana Jones 5' With Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg Coming in 2019

Posted:

indiana jones, harrison ford, steven spielberg, indiana jones 5After years of radio silence from the "Indiana Jones" filmmakers -- and some juicy rumors about a possible franchise reboot starring Chris Pratt -- Disney has decided to stick with the original one-two punch of Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, and has officially announced that the duo will reunite for "Indiana Jones 5."

The as-yet-untitled flick already has a release date in place, and will hit theaters on July 19, 2019. There's no word on other casting (could Pratt perhaps pop up in a supporting role, in a wink to those red-hot rumors?), and no plot has been revealed just yet, but still, this is big news, and we can't wait to see Ford don Jones's iconic fedora once again.

"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, in a press release. "It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."

It's been almost eight years since the last "Indy" flick hit theaters, though "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" wasn't exactly a critic or fan favorite. Still, anytime Ford and Spielberg get together, it's exciting, and we're optimistic that Disney can breathe some much-needed new life into this franchise like they did with "Star Wars," which was due for a creative resurgence after the much-maligned prequels. Our fingers are crossed that "Indy 5" will do for the "Jones" series what "The Force Awakens" did for "Star Wars."

Ben Affleck Responds to Jennifer Garner's Revealing Interview About Split

Posted:

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsWhat did Ben Affleck think of estranged wife Jennifer Garner's highly revealing Vanity Fair interview about the dissolution of their marriage? "It's fine," as he told The New York Times.

The two actors have mostly remained mum on the subject of their split, but Garner broke open the seal when she told Vanity Fair that Affleck was the "love of my life," that they'd been "had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny," and she is "still the only person that knows some of his truths."

In his own interview, the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" star said he took no issue with his ex's candidness. "She felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with, so she could say, 'Look, I already talked about it -- I don't want to do it again.'"

Affleck emphasized that his split from Garner, currently starring in "Miracles From Heaven," is entirely amicable. He noted that she and their three children will visit him in Europe while he films "Justice League."

"Jen's great. She's a great person. We're on great terms," he said. "I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in."

Anne Hathaway, Director Garry Marshall Planning 'Princess Diaries 3'

Posted:

princess diariesDust off your tiaras, "Princess Diaries" fans!

The team behind the 2001 hit teen comedy (and the 2004 sequel) are planning for a third royal affair. As director Garry Marshall told People, "I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do 'Princess Diaries 3' in Manhattan. Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we're going to do it."

In the original film, Hathaway plays American teen Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she's the heir to the kingdom of Genovia. Her grandmother (Julie Andrews) has the hard task of molding Mia into a worthy princess. The sequel focuses on Mia's romantic life, as she falls for a handsome lord, played by Chris Pine.

Speaking of Pine, would he be in "Princess Diaries 3"?

"Maybe," Marshall teased. "He's quite big now, you know." (Pine has since become a major star after headlining the "Star Trek" movies.)

Xena Will Be Openly Lesbian in Reboot Series

Posted:

XenaXena, Warrior Princess, is coming out of the closet.

Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the showrunner guiding the reboot of "Xena," has indicated he intends to make the main character openly lesbian. He wrote a blog post addressing the controversial fate of a lesbian character on the CW drama "The 100," on which he served as writer and co-executive producer:

"I am a very different person with a very different world view than my employer on The 100 – and my work on The 100 was to use my skills to bring that vision to life. Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons. There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s."

That relationship was between Xena and her sidekick, Gabrielle. Fans believed the two had romantic feelings for each other, but it was never really expressed in the syndicated series. Even Lucy Lawless thought her character was gay.

"There was always a 'Well, she might be or she might not be' but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me," she told Lesbian News in 2003. "Now it wasn't just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was 'Nope, they're married, man.'"

The "Xena" reboot is expected to air sometime later this year.

'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' Trailer Fires Up the Imagination

Posted:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar ChildrenWhat some call peculiar, others may call delightful.

20th Century Fox debuted the first full trailer for "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," Tim Burton's movie adaptation of Ransome Riggs's hit book. It tells the story of a home for kids with special powers (like invisibility and super-strength), run by Miss Peregrine (Eva Green). Young Jacob (Asa Butterfield) comes to the home and discovers that his own "peculiarity" is the key to protecting the residents from darker forces without. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) - Trailer No. 1
Burton has such a signature style and flair, which are on full display in the trailer. The movie looks to have a delightful combination of fantastical imagery, charmingly weird characters, and goofy, gentle humor.

"Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" opens September 30.

Seth Rogen's R-Rated 'Sausage Party' Trailer Is Meaty Horror Show

Posted:

Sausage PartyA R-rated Pixar movie is never going to happen, but Seth Rogen is giving it his own try with "Sausage Party."

Rogen and creative partner Evan Goldberg have released the first NSFW trailer for their R-rated animated horror-comedy. The movie follows grocery store food items -- hot dogs, buns, potatoes, baby carrots, etc. — after they're purchased. Only then do they realize that being chosen is not the great honor they believed. To their horror, they get peeled, boiled, sliced, and -- gasp! -- eaten. Sausage Party (2016) - Trailer No. 1
The movie contains a lot of bad language ("Once you see that s---, it'll f--- you up for life," one food item moans) and food-related violence ("They're eating children!" a hot dog screams after a human consumes two baby carrots). And of course, there are the requisite hot dog and bun jokes (consider their analogs). It's an amusing premise, but can it hold up for a feature-length film?

"Sausage Party" opens in theaters August 12.

15 Things You Never Knew About Christopher Nolan's 'Memento'

Posted:

A hand shakes a Polaroid as it "reverse develops," moments before an ejected shell casing re-enters the gun it was fired from -- the bullet coming back out of the screaming man it was fired into.

As opening scenes go, you don't get much better than "Memento," Christopher Nolan's gripping film. And, as features go, few are as scary-good as this one. A thriller about memory, reality and, um, tattoos, "Memento's" twisty plot more than holds up 15 years later. Some would say it's "The Dark Knight" director's best film.

Forget the pending remake that has everyone crying "too soon;" in honor of the film's 15th anniversary this week, here are 15 things you never knew about this modern classic.
1. The brothers Nolan -- Christopher (pictured) and Jonathan -- came up with the idea for the film while on a 2000 mile road trip, driving from Chicago to Los Angeles.

2. The final film was based on Jonah's short story, "Memento Mori," which was published after the movie.

3. Every major studio passed on the film.

4. Before Guy Pearce secured the role of Leonard, Brad Pitt, Aaron Eckhart, and Thomas Jane were considered for the role.

5. Nolan's first choice for the role of Leonard? Alec Baldwin.
6. While the opening scene plays in reverse, the only sound effect that is played backwards is Teddy (Joe Pantoliano, above) screaming "No."

7. During his audition to play the memorable character of Sammy, Stephen Tobolowsky had mentioned to the director that he had once experienced amnesia as a result of taking an experimental pain killer following surgery. Tobolowsky said his experience may have helped earn him the role.

8. Two actors in the film would go on to have roles in Nolan's "Batman Begins:" Mark Boone Junior and the late Larry Holden. The former played Leonard's seedy motel clerk before playing corrupt GCPD cop Flass; the latter played Jimmy in "Memento" before being cast as Finch, Gotham's District Attorney. (Holden also had a small role in Nolan's 2002 thriller, "Insomnia.")

9. Fans of the film, if they pay attention, might be able to hear Christopher Nolan's voice in a key scene. During Teddy's line, "You don't have a clue, you freak!" Nolan felt that Pantoliano did not quite deliver the last two words of the line in the way he had envisioned. So it's Nolan's voice on the final film saying "you freak." (Rather, Nolan doing an impersonation of Pantoliano's voice. The actor was unaware of the dub, until an interview for "Anatomy of a Scene: 'Memento.'"
10. For the role of the duplicitous Natalie, actor Mary McCormack lobbied hard for the part before filmmakers ultimately when with Carrie Anne-Moss (above), who was hot off "The Matrix" at the time. On casting Moss, Nolan said she "added an enormous amount to the role of Natalie that wasn't on the page."

11. On the Limited Edition DVD release, users had to solve a complicated series of questions on the DVD menu to unlock a version of the film's events edited in chronological order.

12. The film took an insanely-fast 25 days to shoot. And according to the director, Moss shot her entire role in eight days.

13. When taking "Memento" to Sundance, production company Newmarket also acquired "Donnie Darko" -- linking the destinies of two indie (and cult-y) films.

14. See that white Honda Civic parked next to Leonard's Jaguar at the hotel? That's Christopher Nolan's car at the time of production.
15. Upon its initial release, "Memento" made back five times its production budget. Few films can claim that level of profitability outside low-budget, Blumhouse-type horror features.

Every Christopher Nolan Movie, Ranked

From Gotham City to outer space, there is no place Christopher Nolan has gone where audiences haven't followed.

Praised for his dedication to in-camera spectacle, but criticized for (allegedly) emotionally-cold stories, Nolan is as divisive a filmmaker as he is a popular one. As the director gears up for his next feature, the WWII epic "Dunkirk," while also celebrating the 15th anniversary of "Memento," we've ranked every Christopher Nolan movie. You're welcome.

From "The Dark Knight" to "Interstellar," here are Nolan's best (and worst) films.
