We want to make it easier for you to digest an entire month's worth of movies in one sitting, so we've created these groovy little calendars you can use to get caught up on the month's most notable movie releases, both in theaters and at home (note: the VOD dates may vary by platform). We've also littered our nerdy calendar with a few memorable events that took place during some of your favorite movies. Fans of 'The Shining' Can Now Wear the Overlook Hotel Carpet Pattern via New Merch from Mondo

Posted: 02 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Purveyors of all thing pop culture, Austin-based Mondo has been revamping your cult film favorites through its vinyl soundtrack and VHS reissues, nerdy tees and sought-after artworks that pay homage to cinema’s most fun and bizarre titles. Now the company has created a new line of film-centric goodies. Mondo 237 references Stanley Kubrick’s chilling horror film The Shining.   (For those new to the movie, 237 is the ominous room at the Overlook Hotel where Jack Nicholson’s boozy writer Jack Torrance takes a gig as a winter caretaker and suffers a terrifying mental breakdown.)    The Mondo 237 line is designed after the iconic Overlook carpet pattern, which Kubrick expertly captured in shots of the hotel’s hallways. Here’s a...

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 02 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. The second trailer for Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an improvement, but for someone who’s been eager for a new live-action Ninja Turtles movie since the early '90s, I expected that seeing the gang back on-screen and in a real-world setting would have had a more exhilarating effect. There are strong moments and visuals here, so perhaps the problem is weak editing more than anything else, and if that is the case, the film’s marketing campaign has a whole three months to fix it. But for now, Ninja Turtles must forgo trailer top honors and defer to six others more worthy of the title. 1. They...

The Schmoes Know Movie Show: The Top 5 Sequels We'd Like to See

Posted: 02 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Who are the Schmoes, and what exactly do they know? The Schmoes are a couple of regular guys, Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, who--like you--are the people for whom movies are made. Each week, we're posting brand new video from the Schmoes that'll give their spin on a given movie topic. On this week's episode of the Schmoes Know Movie Show, the guys count down their top five sequels they'd love to see get made someday.   MORE FROM AROUND THE WEB:                 ZergNet (function() {var zergnet = document.createElement('script');zergnet.type = 'text/javascript'; zergnet.async = true;zergnet.src = 'http://www.zergnet.com/zerg.js?id=15794';var znscr...

'Star Wars' Roundup: Massive Prop Auction on the Horizon, Plus Interactive Apps Retell the Tales of Episodes I - VI

Posted: 02 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Everyone’s busy talking about Star Wars: Episode VII this week, but if you’re a fan of the original trilogy with a few bucks to spare, this news will probably be more interesting than a billion casting announcements. Carrie Fisher, better known as Princess Leia, is set to auction off Star Wars memorabilia from her own personal collection later this month. It’s all part of a massive event organized by her mother (Debbie Reynolds) set to take place on May 17 and 18. The auction, named Debbie Reynolds: The Auction Finale, will feature a treasure trove of movie memorabilia, but it’s Fisher’s Star Wars goodies that are getting the most press. The actress is set to sell off 20 photos of her and the stars of George Lucas’s trilogy, along with...

The Producers of 'Amazing Spider-Man' Tell Us Their Plans for Villain Movies 'Sinister Six' and 'Venom'

Posted: 02 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

If there is one man who knows Marvel inside and out, it's Avi Arad. Arad was the CEO of Toy Biz in the Nineties and soon took over Marvel Entertainment, becoming its chief creative officer, CEO, director and chairman. This was the man who pulled Marvel out of its slump and founded Marvel Studios; the man who made it so attractive for Disney to acquire. And he remains the biggest Marvel fan around. He's still producing the Amazing Spider-Man movies and shepherding its various spin-offs and sequels, and during our interview was decked out in a T-shirt depicting Spider-Man and Venom facing off (he was also wearing an X-Men bracelet and a giant silver ring embossed with the Punisher logo). This is the man who holds all the secrets. So it was a thrill to get to talk to him and...

8 Books for the Spider-Man Fan Who Is Too Young to See 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Posted: 02 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

It's difficult not to be impressed by the lengths to which The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Andrew Garfield and the film's supporting cast have gone to make themselves available to kids since rebooting the Spider-Man franchise two years ago. Whether they're showing up in costume at children's charity events, schools and hospitals, or simply staying in character when approached by pint-size fans, they've done an admirable job of pairing the usual promotional tour with real-world superhero moments that kids aren't likely to forget. Still, it's worth noting that even though the upcoming PG-13 sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man features Marvel's friendliest neighborhood wall crawler, that doesn't mean it's an all-ages adventure. So what's a...

Get Back to the Future in These New 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Clips

Posted: 02 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

We’re a mere three weeks away from the debut of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and to celebrate, we’ve got three clips to share.  Fox is releasing footage left and right, but so far it has done a pretty good job of whetting our appetite without spoiling the main course. That appears to continue in these new videos, which highlight meetings between characters like Beast and Wolverine, young Magneto and Xavier, and Mystique and Bolivar Trask. If you’re a fanboy's fanboy, your head may very well explode while watching our first clip, which features Peter Dinklage’s Trask and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. It’s like Tyrion Lannister squaring off against Katniss Everdeen, only somehow cooler. There’s some good action in this...

10 Filmmakers Who Deserve a Shot at a Summer Blockbuster

Posted: 02 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Summer blockbusters are often fun, but they're also where true creative genius goes to die. The sad truth is that movemaking is a business, and massive, populist films are carefully crafted to appeal to mass audiences. That means stories that won't offend anyone, actors who won't turn anyone away, and directors who won't get in the way of the studio's notes. However, many directors have managed to make the system work for them. The likes of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan continuously churn out masterpieces in the blockbuster arena, proving that art and commerce don't have to be mutually exclusive. With that said, let's take a look at the filmmakers who deserve a shot at a summer blockbuster. These filmmakers range from the new to the seasoned...
