What Is the Best Comedy Movie Centered on a Baby?

Posted: 12 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

After seeing Neighbors, I thought that this has to be the best comedy ever to be centered on a baby. The concept isn't often a respected one. All the usual diaper jokes and pee-in-the-face gags and whatnot has been done to death in so many movies over the years, and it doesn't matter if one movie has three dads instead of one or if the baby has an inner voice provided by Bruce Willis or the babies are geniuses. They tend to be lame, the whole lot of them. I say that even now that I'm a parent and can relate to them. In fact I might find most of them even worse now that I should be able to identify. Neighbors isn't a comedy about a baby but its situation does revolve around the infant daughter of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne's characters, a couple that...

Gareth Edwards' 'Monsters' and the Refreshing Take It Brings to the Kaiju Table

Posted: 12 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Gareth Edwards' Monsters probably represents the best, most exciting example of everything a kaiju film can be in the new millennium. As an attempt to illustrate what it would really feel like to live in a world attacked by giant monsters, it shares a great deal of DNA with Cloverfield. But while Cloverfield may excel when it comes to monster mayhem (and creature design), Monsters wins out in every other category. Kaiju conversations that omit this gem automatically render themselves suspect. The supreme statement offered by Monsters is that giant-monster movies no longer belong solely to big studios with bottomless pockets. Gareth Edwards put the film together for under $500,000, shooting for over three weeks and doing all the...

Film Face-off: Seth Rogen vs. Zac Efron

Posted: 12 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Neighbors is hilarious. The raunchy comedy, which topped the box office this past weekend, pits a young couple with a baby against a fraternity that moves in next door. It's dad Seth Rogen versus dude Zac Efron, but thankfully it's much more than that, with a great ensemble including Rose Byrne and Dave Franco, who give their best work to date. We weren't sure how to incorporate Neighbors into a Film Face-off. At first we thought "Family vs. Frat," but then it dawned on us that the two leads have done enough on the big screen to earn their own badass battle. So this week it's all about Seth Rogen vs. Zac Efron. Schlub vs. Bro. Let's do it!   Box Office Seth Rogen Rogen's 18 movies have made...

Marvel Studios Countdown: That Time Godzilla Fought Superheroes Like Thor and Iron Man

Posted: 12 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

With the arrival of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in theaters this Friday, we’re reminded of the time that the terrible thunder lizard wreaked havoc smack dab in the middle of the Marvel universe. IDW Publishing has the Godzilla license now, and it deserves some applause for producing some really fun Godzilla comics. But before the company ever had the green guy, Marvel featured the Toho star in his own comic book Godzilla: King of the Monsters from 1977 until 1979 when the monster exited the Marvel universe for good (while Spider-Man snapped pictures of his departure). The central human character in Godzilla’s 24-issue run was arguably Dum Dum Dugan, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent played in current Marvel movies by actor Neal McDonough. Dugan tracked Godzilla...

Watch a Hilarious Animated Short That Should Satisfy Your Craving for New Pixar Movies

Posted: 12 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

When a lazy delivery guy lands on a planet full of tiny purple people, things quickly spiral out of control. The digital short JohnnyExpress takes a page from the Pixar playbook, introducing quirky alien beings, strange galaxies and lots of humor. Kyungmin Woo wrote and directed the animated short, featuring a troublemaking deliveryman in space. He travels to different planets shuttling boxes across the stars, but instead of working hard to complete his route, he sleeps and relies on his autopilot spaceship to do the heavy lifting. When he lands on a strange planet, he has no idea what creatures live underfoot — and that’s when things get interesting. Indulge your inner Pixar fanboy/girl with this fun five-minute movie. This Terrific Fan-Made Trailer Is the Closest We May Ever Get to a Live-Action 'Akira' Movie

Posted: 12 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

While Hollywood continues to sort out whether it'll ever produce a live-action adaptation of the beloved anime film Akira, fans can at least take solace in this fan-made re-creation of the feature, which is probably as close as anyone will ever get to capturing the animated film with real actors.   The first trailer for The Akira Project is out, and given the level of quality we suspect it’s going to make a lot of its Indiegogo investors very happy. Director-producer Nguyen-Ahn Nguyen has done a really impressive job re-creating the look and feel of Katsuhiro Otomo’s film. Hopefully Hollywood see this and takes notes – keep the movie in Neo Tokyo and have Asian actors play the characters instead of trying to reinvent the whole thing with popular...

Mel Gibson Was Almost Cast As Wolverine and Here's What He May Have Looked Like

Posted: 12 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

When there’s a film starring a man mutant with animal-like senses who is physically powerful, practically invincible, doesn’t age like a normal human, and gets to wear a badass metal claw (that’s attached to his skeleton!), you can bet that a lot of actors will be lining up to play him. Yep, Wolverine is pretty damn cool. When it came time to cast the Marvel Comics character while X-Men was first in the works, naturally a lot of dudes wanted the part. Some were forced to turn down the role due to scheduling (Glenn Danzig, Russell Crowe and Dougray Scott included), but there was one name reportedly considered who was too “expensive” in the eyes of Fox. Mel Gibson was still riding the waves of Braveheart popularity...

First Look: Zack Snyder Teases the New Batmobile from 'Batman vs. Superman'

Posted: 12 May 2014 12:53 PM PDT

While there isn't a new superhero movie out this week, that doesn't mean the superhero-movie news comes to a halt. Quite the contrary, as multiple superhero movies continually jockey for a prime slot at the top of your most anticipated lists. Next up to the plate is Zack Snyder, who's currently in the midst of production on Man of Steel 2, aka Batman vs. Superman. The director decided to kick things up a notch at the start of the week by tweeting our first look at Ben Affleck's Batmobile from the upcoming movie, due in theaters on May 6, 2016. Click to enlarge Within the tweet he seems to also tease a full reveal of the Batmobile tomorrow, which should send most Bat fans into a bit of a tizzy. Check Out These Fierce New Images from 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Posted: 12 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

When Transformers: Age of Extinction arrives in theaters on June 27, it'll come stuffed with new looks for at least two of the franchise's more well-known characters: Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. "They are bigger and badder ass than they have ever been," producer Lorenzo di Bonavetura told USA Today, also comparing the new look to the updates Batman's suit receives from movie to movie.    Among the changes are a sword for Optimus Prime, who will take the form of an "impressive Great Western truck" in the fourth installment, directed once again by Michael Bay. Bumblebee, meanwhile, was given a new souped-up yellow Camaro and "Chinese star-style adornments" to tie in with his love of martial arts.    Also...

Sequel Roundup: Get the Latest on 'Avatar 2,' 'Wolverine 3' and 'Mission: Impossible 5'

Posted: 12 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Who’s ready for some sequel news? We’ve got the latest on Avatar, Wolverine 3 and Mission: Impossible 5 in today’s roundup. There’s been a whole lot of buzz in the X-Men universe lately about Hugh Jackman eventually hanging up his Adamantium claws and riding off into the superhero sunset. So much so that it’s no longer a question of what Fox will do if Jackman departs the series, but when. To help make things easier on the actor, the studio is considering shooting both 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and the third Wolverine film back-to-back. This way Jackman would only have to endure his grueling fitness regimen once, and the actor seems okay with the idea of that. Maybe they can just shoot 10 or 11 films in a row and keep him in the series until...
