Comics on Film: Why 'Captain America: Civil War' Is a Comic Book Crossover Come to Life Posted: 06 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT Captain America: Civil War is a comic book crossover come to life, and I mean that in the best sense of the phrase. When Marvel Comics began the tradition of the summer company crossover event with Secret Wars in 1984, bringing virtually the entirety of the company’s superheroes under the umbrella of one major story, few could’ve conceived what that tradition would lead to in the years and decades to come within the comic book medium alone. Beyond that, it’s likely that no one could’ve imagined just how a story like that – with so many disparate characters, situations, and individual stories – could ever be conceived of in a medium like live-action film. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo were given the unenviable task of making... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Why 'Captain America: Civil War' Is the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Posted: 06 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT WARNING: This post contains major spoilers for Captain America: Civil War. It's best to read after you've seen the movie. References to The Empire Strikes Back are nothing new when it comes to Marvel movies. Marvel chief Kevin Feige is such a fan of the second Star Wars movie (or Episode V) that he's squeezed references into a bunch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Ever notice how someone's hand gets cut off in every one of the Phase 2 Marvel movies? That's a direct nod to Empire's climactic scene between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. In fact, Feige has referred to the entirety of Phase 2, which includes everything from Iron Man 3 through Avengers: Age of Ultron, as the "MCU's Empire Strikes Back." Civil War takes... 'Les Misérables' Director Is Bringing the 'Cats' Musical to the Big Screen Posted: 06 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT Once upon a time, Cats was the biggest thing on Broadway. After a successful debut in London, the musical opened in New York in October 1982 and became an instant sensation. It won seven Tony Awards the following year and in time became the longest running show on Broadway, eventually concluding its run in September 2000. A new production is scheduled to return to Broadway this summer, with previews set to begin July 14. Thus, this may be the ideal time for news that a big-screen version is finally moving forward. Tom Hooper, who won an Academy Award for The King's Speech (top, center), will direct the adaptation, according to Variety. Hooper will also serve as one of the producers for the project, teaming again with Universal and Working Title. The filmmaker and the...
