Jennifer Aniston's Mother, Actress Nancy Dow, Dies at 79

Posted:

Entertainment - Nancy Aniston FeatureNancy Dow, a model and actress and the mother of Jennifer Aniston, has died. She was 79.

Aniston announced the news late on Wednesday, releasing a statement to People.

"It is with great sadness that my brother John and I announce the passing of our Mother Nancy Dow," Aniston said in her statement. "She was 79 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends after enduring a long illness. We ask that our family's privacy be respected as we grieve our loss."

Dow had reportedly suffered a stroke in 2011, and a second one last year, according to People.

Dow made her mark appearing in 1960s TV series such as "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Wild Wild West," and most recently appeared in the 2004 drama "Pure." She married her second husband, soap star John Aniston, in 1965. They divorced in 1980 when Jennifer Aniston was 9.

Aniston and her mother had a famous falling out in the '90s after Aniston shot to fame with the premiere of "Friends." Dow reportedly angered Aniston by giving an interview about her daughter without her consent (and later writing a tell-all memoir, also without Aniston's knowledge), causing a rift between the pair. The two eventually reconciled in recent years.

Dustin Diamond Back in Jail After Parole Violation

Posted:

People Dustin DiamondFormer "Saved By the Bell" star Dustin Diamond is back in jail again after an alleged parole violation.

Diamond, who served three months in jail earlier this year on charges stemming from a Christmas Day bar brawl back in 2014, was arrested again on Wednesday in Port Washington, Wisconsin, the Associated Press reports. A jail official told the news outlet that Diamond was back in jail due to a probation violation, though no additional details were provided.

The actor had been sentenced to four months in Ozaukee County Jail, and 15 months probation, after being convicted of disorderly conduct and concealed weapon charges back in June 2015. Diamond got out in April after serving only three months, after he worked in the jail as a janitor.

It's unclear how long Diamond will be behind bars this time around. Just last week, the actor sat down for an interview on Extra with his former "Bell" castmate, Mario Lopez, and pledged to turn his life around.

"I want to put the tomfoolery and malarkey behind me... for that clean slate," Diamond told Lopez at the time. "Time for a change."

'Project Runway' Renewed for 3 More Seasons, 'All Stars' Renewed for 2

Posted:

project runway, project runway all stars, project runway junior, lifetime, renewed, renewalLifetime is staying in the "Project Runway" business for the foreseeable future: The cable network has renewed the fashion design reality series for three more seasons.

Deadline reports that Lifetime and "PR" producer The Weinstein Company struck a lucrative deal that will keep the series on the air through a 17th season, and the network has also renewed the two "Runway" spinoffs, "Project Runway All Stars" and "Project Runway Junior," for additional episodes as well. "All Stars" got a two-season pickup, which will see it through to season seven, while "Junior" was renewed for one more season, following its series debut late last year (it had already been renewed for a second season; Thursday's announcement will keep it on the air through season three).

While many venerable shows see a significant dip in ratings later in their lives -- and "Runway" certainly has shed some of its audience over the years -- Deadline reports that the show's season 14 finale last fall actually grew in viewership, boasting the series's best numbers since the season 12 finale back in 2013. In a statement announcing the renewal, A+E president and CEO Nancy Dubuc praised the show's "incredibly loyal audience" for helping to keep it on the air. Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein added in another statement that the series "has made a lasting mark on television history." (You could say they "made it work," Tim Gunn-style.)

We're happy to know that we'll be watching designers frantically try to sew a couture dress in under 24 hours for many more years to come. "Project Runway" begins production on season 15 next month. No word yet on a premiere date.

'Alice Through the Looking Glass' Family Review: 5 Things Every Parent Should Know

Posted:

Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland to help the Hatter (Johnny Depp) in Disney's ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, an all-new adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll's beloved stories."Alice Through the Looking Glass" is the sequel to Tim Burton's 2010 "Alice in Wonderland," starring several of the same stars (Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter) reprising their roles -- but without Burton at the helm. Joining the fantasy world of "Underland" is Sacha Baron Cohen as the personification of Time, and, in the new story, Alice is fleeing not an ill-fated engagement and the loss of her independence as a sea captain traveling the world.

Here are five issues to consider before taking your kids to see Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass."
Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) in Disney's ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, an all-new adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll's beloved stories.1. How comfortable are they with live-action fantasy?
Although there were a startling number of pre-schoolers and toddlers at a recent promotional screening of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," this James Bobin-directed sequel isn't an ideal first live-action movie or even an appropriate fantasy adventure for kids that young. The story is dark and features potentially upsetting themes about death, loss, grief, and dysfunctional family relationships.
2. How easily do your kids get scared?
Although there's less violence in this installment versus the previous one, there are still scenes of fantasy peril and tense, near-death sequences that could scare your young child. The movie is PG but not G, and therefore expect a few scenes where characters look like they might die and in one case like the entire Underland may be destroyed. There are also emotional, distressing moments when characters say goodbye, seemingly forever. At the screening I attended, some young children were audibly crying at one point, unaware that the movie was unlikely to end in such a sad place.
3. Do you want kids to read it then see it?
Those who haven't read Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" books may not pick up on how this film overlaps or diverges from the source material, but generally it's better for young readers and viewers to experience an original story before the adaptation. If you feel strongly that kids shouldn't see an adaptation until they've read the book first, take that into consideration before deciding to see the movie, but keep in mind that the movie is a really loose adaptation.
4. Who will enjoy the movie most?
Kids and teens who love the "Alice in Wonderland" books and the various adaptations will enjoy the movie most, unless they're purists about the source material, in which case they're likely to balk at all the creative differences between the new movie and the 1871 "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There." Because of the occasional scares and mature themes, age-wise it's best for kids 8 and up.
5. What are critics saying about 'Alice'?
Ratings and reviews for "Alice Through the Looking Glass" are mixed to negative, with a "rotten" Tomatometer score of 30 and an unfavorable 37 on Metacritic. The more positive reviews praising the film think it's great for kids: "There is a pleasurable zip and zing to 'Through the Looking Glass' that marks it out as fine escapist fare for children," says Leigh Paatsch of Australia's Herald Sun. The more critical reviews think it barely resembles Carroll's tale: "What does all this have to do with Lewis Carroll? Hardly anything. It's just an excuse on which to hang two trite overbearing fables and one amusing one," says Stephen Holden of The New York Times.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" opens in theaters nationwide May 20th, 2016.

'Game of Thrones' Season 6, Episode 6 Photos Preview Arya's 'Difficult Choice'

Posted:

How do you follow an episode like "The Door"? Well, "Game of Thrones" Season 6, Episode 6, "Blood of My Blood" will do its best this Sunday, May 29.

Here's HBO's synopsis for "Blood of My Blood," which was written by Bryan Cogman and directed by Jack Bender:

"An old foe comes back into the picture. Gilly (Hannah Murray) meets Sam's (John Bradley) family. Arya (Maisie Williams) faces a difficult choice. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) faces off against the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce)."

If you check out the promo, you can also see Bran Stark and Meera trying to recover from the events of Episode 5. But they are not featured in HBO's photos for Episode 6, at least not the initial ones shared. Maybe more will come, but the first batch of six are more careful, just focusing on King's Landing images -- many already shown in the trailer -- plus Arya Stark/No One facing her big decision in Braavos, and Daenerys Targaryen ... flirting with Daario? Jorah is dying, you two! Behave!

First, here's the promo:

Here are the photos (plus the one at top, to make six):

Tricksy HBO is hiding the really spoilery stuff, you can tell. (Where is the "old foe" of the synopsis?) Last week's episode may have been an "all-timer," but the showrunners said every episode this season is strong -- acknowledging that in past years they have worried about this or that episode -- so expect some big surprises.

In Braavos, we already know Arya is torn about killing the actress Lady Crane, but we also know Jaqen H'ghar told her this was her second chance and "there will not be a third." So what happens if she refuses her mission to kill the actress? Maybe watching that King's Landing play has reminded her that she's not No One, she's Arya Stark. Go get Needle and head home, girl!

On the King's Landing front, it doesn't look like Margaery Tyrell is really about to start a walk of shame, since her hair wasn't chopped like Cersei Lannister's, so what is really happening there?

Anne Hathaway Slams Critics, Scores Cool Points After Epic Rap Battle

Posted:

Some people just don't seem to want to like Anne Hathaway, for whatever reason, but her hilarious rap battle with James Corden just showed why she's actually awesome and deserves recognition for it.

The five-minute "Drop the Mic" video is impressive on both sides, and it's refreshing to see Hathaway be such a good sport about jokes on her Oscars hosting gig, her Oscars acceptance speech, "The Intern," and everything else, while giving it right back to Corden with confidence and ... maybe even a little bit of swag? Sure, it was a scripted rap, not exactly extemporaneous, but that just makes it all the more impressive.

Here's how LaineyGossip put it:

"Annie was on The Late Late Show with James Corden last night and accepted the challenge to rap battle. And here is where I don't think she gets enough credit: live performance. She is well-trained for it. And when she has an able and willing partner to play with, like Hugh Jackman or James Corden – and not James Franco – she shines. She really, really shines.

What I appreciate here is that it took work. She didn't just go on a talk show and answer some questions. In agreeing to participate in this segment, Jesus, can you imagine the memorisation? You can't cue card this sh-t. She had to have done her homework and then delivered. Nothing turns me on more than seeing evidence that someone has put in the preparation. Yes, of course, James had to do the same. But it's his show. It's his job. His idea. Annie's not contracted to memorise pages of verse when she goes on a talk show. But she will.

This is how Anne Hathaway is 'cool'. She'll never be that actor who shows up on someone's couch and gets by on attitude and a slow drawl. (That eventually gets old anyway, I'm looking at you Johnny Depp.) For some people, being 'cool' is not caring. Anne Hathaway can't not care. It's just not her. When she cares is when she's at her coolest."

Agreed! Watch the rap:

"You can try to knock me down round after round but I promise you Anne Hathaway, she won't stay on the ground/
I was hated and shaded but now I've been liberated/
There's nothing you can say to leave me incapacitated..."

Love it -- especially since she's responding to Corden, but you know it's really about finally standing up to her critics. Talkin' to you, Franco!

Patrick Dempsey Opens Up on Reunion With Wife, 'Shocking' Fan Reaction to McDreamy Death

Posted:

Oscars ArrivalsDerek Shepherd may be gone from "Grey's Anatomy," but 's life is more -- wait for it -- McDreamy than ever.

Dempsey just talked to the Evening Standard in some early promotion for "Bridget Jones's Baby," where he plays the new guy in Bridget's love triangle. The ES noted that Dempsey's wife Jillian Fink was with him. She had filed for divorce from him in January of last year, but their divorce proceedings have reportedly stalled. The writer asked Dempsey if they had reconciled.

"Yeah, I think so," he said. "You have to work at everything. And you cannot do everything. Something has to be sacrificed." He's sacrificing some time on the racetrack (he owns his own team) to hang out with his daughter and twin sons. The story noted that he's assistant soccer coach for his sons' team, he's teaching all three kids to cook, and when he considers a project he looks for something that will set a good example. "You do think: 'how much violence is in the script? Is it necessary violence? Is this the right step for the career? Does this change the game?'"

To many fans, Dempsey will always be McDreamy, and he talked about the fan reaction to the character's death last year.

"They're still upset I'm not there. It's shocking, sometimes, what people say. I don't know if it's just the nature of television, or being able to watch something so close on your iPhone or your iPad, that the intimacy or relationship with that character makes them more like a family member... or a lover." He said some of the things fans send are explicit. "That's the thing that's either good or bad about social media. You don't know who's sending it. They can hide behind whatever name you come up with, and those things can either be empowering or dangerous."

It's a really interesting interview, you should check out the whole thing.

Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) also recently revisited the fan outcry, after Entertainment Weekly noted that more than 100,000 fans had signed a petition calling for "Grey's" to bring back Derek, or even boycott the show:

"Nobody wanted to lose Patrick — everybody knew how valuable he was to the show. It wasn't a choice that we had. We both signed a two-year contract to renew, so it was a situation that came up very abruptly and nobody expected it to happen. What upset me was how Shonda [Rhimes] was attacked. The stuff about me being hurt by the fans saying that they weren't going to watch anymore if he wasn't part of the show didn't feel good, but I understood it. I understood their anger. We were sad to lose him, too, but what really disappointed me was the way that people attacked Shonda as if she had some choice. She's explained why the character has to end that way, because if the character rides off into the sunset on a white horse, why would he ever leave Meredith? Then that love story is ruined. If he were just to walk away gracefully, he's no longer the knight in shining armor. And fans are always going to want him to come back, so I was just disappointed in the hate that Shonda got. I felt pretty protective of her in that moment and I was pretty disappointed that she got the blame for something that really wasn't her fault at all."

At least now everyone has moved on, and hopefully in a more positive direction. You can watch Dempsey in "Bridget Jones's Baby" this September.

Upset About How 'Nashville' Ended? Don't Worry, It's Good News!

Posted:

If *that* is how "Nashville" really ends, well, that's a shame. But don't worry. The Powers That Be intentionally ditched a happy ending scene for Juliette and Avery in favor of a plane crash cliffhanger precisely to give the show a better chance for life after ABC.

As you know, ABC canceled the series after four seasons, but Nashies have been trending #BringBackNashville, and one of those Nashies is apparently series producer Lionsgate TV. Multiple sources told TVLine that the cliffhanger ending was a business decision to try and make the show more attractive to platforms to pick up for Season 5.

A source close Lionsgate told TVLine the studio "is fully confident that there's much more Nashville to be told. Tonight's Season 4 finale ending speaks to that confidence. Not to frustrate or disappoint fans, rather Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment are listening to fans' outpouring of support online for more."

On that note, look what Lionsgate tweeted:

Yes! Lionsgate has reportedly been having talks with a bunch of interested networks, so -- as much as that finale may have frustrated Javery fans -- Nashies should trust that the studio knows what it has to do to market the show to a new home. After all, if everyone got a happy ending, and all loose ends were tied up, then it would really look like a series finale instead of a show that has more stories to be told.

'Game of Thrones' Stars Reveal Deleted Brienne-Tormund Scenes

Posted:

How dare "Game of Thrones" defy the laws of gods and men and cut Tormienne footage? Put every minute on the Season 6 DVD or someone will be flayed!

As we approach Season 6, Episode 6, Brienne appears to be on her way to Riverrun, dispatched by Sansa to meet with Brynden Tully, aka the Blackfish. So Brienne may not even get more time with Tormund Giantsbane. He'll be crushed! They've only had maybe three or four glances between them (and she's never been comfortable with any of them), but fans immediately started shipping them -- and both Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund) absolutely love it.

However, Christie told Entertainment Weekly that we missed out on one Brienne-Tormund scene, since they cut it from the show. She said it showed Sansa "going Mean Girls" on Brienne to tease her about Tormund's crush; "and you had the powerful warrior who's totally flustered," Christie said. Awwww. Seriously, though, between Jaime and Tormund, she's doing pretty well.

Hivju also mentioned some deleted scenes in his interview with ScreenCrush. (His shipper name for B&T is "Briemund the Tarth Bane") Here's part of that talk:

What was it like to play those scenes with Gwendoline Christie?
We had a lot of fun with it. She's a great actress and she's a walking, laughing machine. It was a day of doing that. Some of the scenes are deleted. But we had a lot of fun and nobody saw that coming.

What's in your deleted scenes?
Ah, you'll see when the extra material comes out. The only thing the show says about Tormund's family is he says in "Hardhome" that "Jon Snow is prettier than both my daughters." So he has kids, but we haven't seen him – he's been so occupied with war that he hasn't been able to think about girls. So finally there was a match for him walking in Castle Black.

Tormund's poor daughters. Then again, Jon Snow is prettier than everyone. Do you hope "Game of Thrones" includes more Tormienne moments? The showrunners rarely seem to react to what the fans want (except for their recent apology) but maybe they'll be inspired to write more Brienne/Tormund scenes in Season 7.

Johnny Depp's Mom Dies, Amber Heard Files for Divorce 3 Days Later, No Prenup?

Posted:

27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala - ArrivalsWell, we found it: The one week in this lifetime it would really suck to be Johnny Depp.

Late Wednesday night the news broke that Amber Heard, Depp's wife of just 15 months, had filed for divorce on Monday, May 23. According to TMZ, that divorce filing, for the classic "irreconcilable differences," came just three days after Depp's mother, Betty Sue Palmer, passed away at age 81. Heard listed their date of separation as Sunday, two days after his mom died.

And this isn't a week where Depp can really keep a low profile; he's meant to be in the public eye promoting his movie "Alice Through the Looking Glass," which -- more bad news -- only has a 31 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of celebs try to file divorce papers during low-key times, or at least at the end of the week to avoid tabloid coverage, but there's no hiding this one.

Also, Amber filed for spousal support, despite the barely-a-year-marriage. TMZ said Depp filed his response through his lawyer, asking the judge to reject Amber's support claim. No word on what will happen to the dogs she infamously smuggled into Australia while he was filming.

76th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
TMZ's sources said they had no prenup, which is surprising. They're also deep-diving into the family strife, with a separate report claiming Depp's two teenage children, sisters, and mother all "hated" Amber. It's a bad time to remind him, but a lot of people questioned this relationship, not just for the age gap (he's 52, she's 30) but because he jumped into that marriage right after his 14-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis.

People is also jumping into the fray, and their sources seem to be closer to the Team Amber camp.
"Before Amber met Johnny she was just a regular super cool hipster chick living with roommates who dated girls. At their engagement party she kind of got cold feet... she was just like what is this scene and what am I doing here? She kind of couldn't believe it was her life now." So why did she marry him? A separate source told People, "When Johnny Depp wants you, you don't really say no. Why would you?"

'X3': 10 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the Infamous Threequel

Posted:

When it was released 10 years ago (on May 26, 2006), "X-Men: The Last Stand" seemed like the end of an era -- the conclusion of the "X-Men" trilogy, the end of director Bryan Singer's involvement with the franchise, and the last time we'd see the original cast. Little did we know that it was only the beginning, that Singer, the X-Men, and even Patrick Stewart as Professor X would all be back with a vengeance.

While "X3" was a huge hit at the box office, it was divisive with fans -- it's the poster-child for why third installments of movie franchises are usually regarded as the worst entry. In honor of the infamous threequel's tenth anniversary, here are ten things you need to know about the summer blockbuster.
1. After directing the first two "X-Men" movies to critical and commercial success, Singer famously dropped out of the third movie to make "Superman Returns." He proved nearly impossible to replace.

Star Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) wanted to bring his "Fountain" director Darren Aronofsky aboard. Joss Whedon, who wrote the "Gifted" storyline in the comics that inspired the "X3" screenplay, turned down the job in order to develop "Wonder Woman" (a project that would take more than a decade to come to fruition, ultimately without Whedon's involvement). "Layer Cake" director Matthew Vaughn signed on, but two weeks before filming began, Vaughn quit, citing personal reasons. He eventually returned to the franchise as the director and co-writer of "X-Men: First Class." He also received story credit for "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

2. At the last minute, "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner was hired, who, paradoxically, had earlier been Warner Bros.' choice for the "Superman" reboot project that ultimately went to Singer. Ratner knew he'd be the target of fanboy wrath but shrugged and said, "You can't make everybody happy."
3. One star who was thrilled Ratner was on board was Halle Berry (above), who'd threatened to quit the franchise if her character, Storm, wasn't given more to do. "I was begging, please, please. Not for more screen time, but if I was going to be in it for five minutes, then just let me have five good minutes, where Storm has a point of view or flies with the cape, not the plane." Ratner, she said, "felt the way I felt. He made rewrites happen and made things change."

4. Ratner also made a point of upgrading Storm's hairstyle. "I do like the hair," Berry said of her new Ratner-ordered 'do. "That's the first thing he said to me: 'The hair -- gotta go. I don't know how y'all did it before, but it's got to be better.'"
5. Like the other stars of the first two movies, Patrick Stewart wasn't contracted to do a third. But he signed on for "Last Stand" anyway, not knowing that his character, Charles Xavier, was going to be killed off.

6. An early draft of the screenplay included the villain Emma Frost, a role meant for Sigourney Weaver. The character finally made her franchise debut in "First Class," played by January Jones.
7. How much time passed between Jean Grey's death in "X2" and her resurrection in "X3?" Not even Famke Janssen, who played the out-of-control telepath, knew the answer. "A decent amount of time," she guessed. "Years, maybe."

8. Jackman said Ratner set the tone for a less cerebral, more goofy shoot. "Brett wants to have a good time, all the time," Jackman said. "It's a very fun set." In fact, he said, the silliness that emerged in the outtakes might prove embarrassing if they were ever released. "You will never see the gag reel," Jackman said. "It's one of the funniest gag reels I've ever seen. Kelsey [Grammer, who played Beast] figures prominently, as does Ian McKellen. There's some stuff in there that would pretty much ruin the franchise if it ever got out there."
9. One of the film's most noteworthy effects, considered groundbreaking at the time, was the digital facelift used to make Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto look two decades younger in the flashback prologue.

The smoothing-out of lines and wrinkles, and darkening of gray hair and eyebrows, was done in consultation with an actual plastic surgeon, who made sure the resulting features didn't look too androgynous. Stewart said that, even with the digital trickery, playing younger was still an acting challenge. "We also needed, in the performance, to think about being 20 years younger, the way we sat, the way we moved," said Stewart, then 65. "I feel it now. Our bodies move differently. There's a fluidity which I don't have anymore, not to the same extent. So watching it made me smile a few times."

10. Costing $210 million, "The Last Stand" set a then-record as the most expensive movie ever made, though the record was broken a few weeks later with the release of the $225 million "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

"X3's" debut scored $123 million, setting a Memorial Day weekend record, though another "Pirates" movie ("At World's End") would surpass it a year later with $140 million. Overall, "Last Stand" grossed $234 million in North America and a total of $459 million worldwide.
