DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 19 May 2016 10:00 PM PDT

New Indie: The Lady in the Van (Sony Home Entertainment) had all the markings of an awards season contender: It was the latest film from BAFTA and Tony Award–winning director Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys); it was based on beloved British writer Alan Bennett’s memoir; and, most importantly, it starred Dame Maggie Smith as the titular Lady. That so few people saw the movie during its theatrical release and that it earned so little award recognition is just one of those film-history mysteries. All the same, this story of an elderly woman who parks her van in Bennett’s driveway, and then lives there for the next 15 years, is a very audience-friendly bit of feel-good-ism (and name an Academy voter whose head can’t be turned by that sort of thing), one...

Posted: 19 May 2016 08:30 PM PDT

Here is all the latest on the Marvel, DC, X-Men cinematic universes, plus the TMNT franchise, to satisfy your hunger for superhero movie news:   Mr. Sinister is Probably the Villain in Wolverine 3! Officially, actors Boyd Holbrook and Richard E. Grant are playing bad guys in the next Wolverine movie, but their roles are so far pretty vague. It's possible that one of them is really going to be Mr. Sinister, given this deduction by /Film based on the X-Men: Apocalypse end credits scene (SPOILERS): "We see a besuited man walking through the remains of the Weapon X clean-up programme, removing the blood, bodies and bullets. And retrieving vials of Wolverine’s blood labelled Weapon X. And placing them into his briefcase which contains other vials of differing...

Shane Black Teases His 'Predator' Will Have a Detective Story In It

Posted: 19 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT

"I could make detective stories for the rest of my life. In fact, even if I'm doing a story about an eight-and-a-half-foot tall monster called the Predator, there's going to be a detective story probably somewhere inside it." It is impossible for Shane Black to make a movie that doesn't have a detective story somewhere inside of it. Obviously when he's making something like The Nice Guys or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, that noir-infused side of things is front and center, but even when he's writing a kids horror movie (The Monster Squad), there's a detective aspect to it. Heck, he even found a way to inject some great investigative blood into Iron Man 3. So it probably shouldn't be too much of a surprise that his next movie, a big budget...

New 'The Purge: Election Year' Trailer Wants To Make America Violent Again

Posted: 19 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

Update: A new trailer for The Purge: Election Year has hit online, which really has us wondering one thing. How lucky are Blumhouse and Universal that this year is an actual election year? The current political climate mixed with this heightened, dystopian vision of future America is creating a bizarrely perfect storm. Check it out.   Previously: When The Purge hit theaters in 2013, people gleefully suspended their disbelief for its seemingly impossible future where America has instituted a policy that legalizes all crime for one night a year. It's one of those ludicrous plots, like The Day After Tomorrow, that you look at and think, "It's so absurd and unrealistic that I'm kind of into it." Fast forward three years and the political climate in...

Cannes Buzz: Watch Kristen Stewart in First 'Personal Shopper' Trailer

Posted: 19 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT

Last week Kristen Stewart walked the red carpet for the opening night gala presentation of Woody Allen's period comedy Cafe Society at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The film drew quite a bit of buzz. On Tuesday night she again walked the Cannes red carpet, this time for a very different sort of movie. Stewart plays Maureen, the title character in Personal Shopper, directed by Olivier Assayas. (The two previously collaborated on Clouds of Sils Maria.) Maureen has taken a job caring for the wardrobe of a celebrity. She hates the job, but it pays for her expenses in Paris, where she wants to stay until she receives a sign from the spirit of her recently deceased twin brother. Like her brother, Maureen is a medium and suffers from a heart condition. Anticipating the worst...

Daniel Craig Done with Bond? New Report Suggests He's No Longer 007

Posted: 19 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Is Daniel Craig officially done with 007? Yes, according to a new report from the sometimes sketchy Daily Mail, who claim Craig turned down a monster offer of something close to $100 million to return as James Bond for two more films.  There's been a ton of talk surrounding Craig following Spectre as to whether he'd be back or not. Many thought he had one film left on his contract, though rumors suggest a knee injury Craig suffered while filming Spectre may have factored heavily into his decision not to return. It might be for the best, too, since the distribution rights have also expired for MGM, which means another studio may take over the reigns of the Bond franchise. Seems fitting a new Bond would slide into the picture at the same time, especially as the...
