Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda and J.J. Abrams Sing 'Star Wars' Cantina Song

Posted:

80th Annual New York Drama Critics' Circle AwardsSeriously, nobody is having a better year than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the blockbuster hit musical "Hamilton." The show hauled in a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations yesterday, two of which were for Miranda himself.

The pop culture sensation that is "Hamilton" fused with the pop culture sensation that is "Star Wars" when Miranda revealed that he wrote the music for a new cantina scene in "The Force Awakens." And today, to celebrate Star Wars Day, he called up director J.J. Abrams to perform that song for its #Ham4Ham tradition (a treat for fans who waited in vain for tickets outside the theater).

The song is called "Jabba Flow" and written in the language spoken by Jabba the Hutt.
Miranda joked that it was a "shaggy intergalactic remix." He and Abrams also announced that the song was now available for download on iTunes or StarWars.com.

'The Flash' Star Tom Cavanagh Talks Taking on Multiple Versions of Harrison Wells

Posted:

Getty Images Portrait Studio Powered By Samsung Galaxy At Comic-Con International 2015 You couldn't blame Tom Cavanagh if he was experiencing a bit of an identity crisis. After all, in just two seasons of The CW's superhero hit series "The Flash," he's already played multiple variations of the same person.

But figuring out exactly which version of Dr. Harrison Wells he needs to be in any given scene -- the actual, mostly benevolent Wells of the past; the nefarious Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. the Reverse Flash, inhabiting Wells's body; the acerbic, single-minded Harry Wells of the extradimensional parallel world Earth-2; or any new twist thrown his way -- doesn't give Cavanagh pause at all. In fact, he's ready for the producers to bring an infinite amount of Wellses.

"Here's my thing. What I understood when I signed on to this show, that the highest tally wins," grinned Cavanagh at a recent press Q&A. "Recently, Grant [Gustin] and I had this discussion where he was like, 'No, no, I'm, like, number one on the callsheet. I'm The Flash. It's not going to change if you do ten characters.' But I still feel like when a man sets a goal, a man should follow through with that goal."

He's especially pleased with his work in the show's second season, developing a testier, pricklier version of Wells that set Barry Allen and Team Flash on edge but ultimately appears to be on the side of the angels. "This version of Harrison Wells is coming swimmingly along," he said. "This has a nice sort of arc to it where it was like, "These people suck. I want to get my daughter back. These people suck. I want to get my daughter back. These people suck. Oh, I got my daughter back -- OK, these people don't suck.' I like to keep all that emotional stuff pretty close to the vest, but your actions are your words."

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said he sincerely believes Cavanagh deserves an Emmy Award, particularly for the seamless way he's slipped between the different incarnations of Wells. When he recently resumed the role of the evil Wells/Thawne Reverse-Flash from Season One for the episode "Flash Back," said Kresiberg, "you were reminded of how different and deadly and scary that character was, and what a wild card it was."

Then he was back as the Earth-2 Wells, "a tortured man who's beset with guilt, then you see these incredibly loving scenes of him and his daughter and just how much he loves her," added Kreisberg. "It's all played by the same guy, and it's all just shades and variations and subtle tweaks to the character, and you believe it all."

Cavanagh said he believes that the television format and the show's superheroic world have lent themselves to allowing him tremendous performance opportunities that the audience more easily accepts. "Because you spend 40 plus hours crafting various things, and it's harder to do that on the big screen," he said. "It's much easier to do on television. By virtue of putting in the time, and the time, and the time. Then you have a scene between Earth-1 guy, and Season Two Barry Allen that everyone can follow along with. They've spent 40 hours, so you've got that in the bank as you start saying those words."

He points to specific confrontation in "Flash Back" between Thawne/Wells and The Flash that effectively used the characters' history to ratchet up the tension in an already exciting scene. "It had these arcs and heights and valleys to it where it looked like I was the aggressor, then he was the aggressor, then I was going to kill him, and he had a reason for us not to do that... That's one of the great things about doing a show like this. Yes, they're having this huge psychological face off, but there's also a ticking clock in the form of a Time Wraith who's coming to kill. That was, for me personally, that was the highlight for my Season Two. I think Grant and I both, when they yelled cut on the final bit of that scene, we were very, very sad to be done that one. That was just a really, really gratifying moment for the two of us."

"People could follow the things that we're talking about in that room -- everybody understands the logic," enthused Cavanagh. "If you're fortunate enough to get on a show that runs for a little bit, then you start having these moments where you've invested time, and then that kind of scene is a payoff. And it can't happen every episode, but when it does come along, that sort of seems the domain of a long-running television show. People have come along with you along the way, so they have stuff invested as you have as the person playing it."

Kreisberg said he saw Cavanagh's thoughtful take on the Earth-2 Wells kick in as soon as he was presented with the first scripts of the season. "One of the most interesting things was when we were writing the beginning of this season, we have the table read, and Tom had basically cut half his lines out. He speaks a lot less. The Wells from last season could fake being a human being. He's verbose and he liked to talk and he liked to be a showman, and this Wells had no time for people. He lived in his head. So it was a learning experience for us as writers that sort of came with the other direction, because Tom really created the Wells for this season... He's a jerk, and yet he's doing everything he's doing because he loves his daughter more than anything in the world. We love that dichotomy."

"We had an opportunity where we killed the other guy, so this new guy, he has to look like that guy clearly, but apart from that we've got this palette where we can create a whole bunch of different things," Cavanagh explained. "I thought it would be nice if this guy talked a lot less, he was a lot bitchier, he was a malcontent. He had the intelligence, but his intelligence was not on display the way Season One Wells was. His intelligence was for him, and that was it. He wasn't a people person, he was an antagonist. I think our show is helped by that. It's nice to have a little conflict on our show. This was an opportunity to provide that on a daily basis."

"When it comes to like creating [characters], I just love it," the actor added. "I take a lot of pains to figure out what would be, first, best for the show, and second, best for me as an actor to play. And I loved playing this guy who was short with people. He just had this rage in him that he was this guy who was so powerful on this Earth, and yet incapable of protecting the most important person to him from this. And that fueled everything for him."

Cavanagh believes that all of the work he and the writers are doing have set the viewers up for a major payoff at the show heads toward its season finale. "We have this scene which I won't give it away, but I kept it in my back pocket the entire season," he said. "I knew there'd be a moment where we'd get to play it. And sure enough, these guys wrote our season finale, where it's in there. I've just been longing to do it."

Kreisberg said he thinks it's a shame that because Cavanagh's delivering such a multilayered performance on a series in the superhero genre, he's unlikely to collect the kind of showbiz industry trophies his colleagues think he deserves. "That that doesn't get larger recognition will always be, unfortunately, because it's a superhero show," he said. "You won't get that."

"But you guys are the media -- you have the power to change that!" joked Cavanagh. "Can I have an Emmy, please? That'd be awesome. I'd love that."

Hulu Renews 'The Mindy Project' For Season 5

Posted:

Mindy Project"The Mindy Project" is returning for a fifth season!

Hulu announced that it was renewing the comedy for season 5, which will be the second to play exclusively on the streaming service. Last year, the series, which was created by Mindy Kaling, was cancelled by Fox, and Hulu swooped in to save it. Now, viewers will get to see further adventures and wacky antics from Kaling's OB/GYN character and her doctor and nurse co-workers.
Season 4, which is currently airing on Hulu, has focused on Mindy navigating motherhood while being newly single, after breaking up with baby daddy Danny (Chris Messina).

Hulu has become more aggressive about adding original content in the past year. The streaming service has debuted high-profile shows like "The Path" and "11.23.63," and is making a foray into documentary films with Ron Howard's "The Beatles: Eight Days a Week."

'Game of Thrones': Does Ramsay Get This Long-Absent Character as a 'Gift'?

Posted:

"Game of Thrones" villain Ramsay Bolton is like that rival sports team that just keeps winning and winning, and even when you think they're about to be taken down, they get a bad ref call in their favor.

In Season 6, Episode 2, Ramsay got the bad news of a new baby brother/rival heir. He turned that frown upside down by 1) stabbing his own father to death, then 2) having his dogs kill both his baby brother and his stepmother. Problem solved! The new Lord Bolton looks to continue his infuriating winning streak this Sunday, May 8 in Episode 3, "Oathbreaker," which has this synopsis:

"Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) meets her future. Bran meets the past. Tommen confronts the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce). Arya (Maisie Williams) trains to be No One. Varys (Conleth Hill) finds an answer. Ramsay gets a gift."

The Bran past stuff is interesting in a different very spoilery way, but what is Ramsay's special Mother's Day gift? Well, fans are worried that it might be Rickon Stark, the youngest member of the Stark boy band, who has been on the run with Osha since Season 3.

As the Telegraph surmised:

"The last time we saw Rickon, wildling Osha has agreed to deliver him to the home of Jon Umber ( a loyal Stark supporter, also known as 'the Greatjon'). Fans suspect that the man seen speaking to Ramsay in the trailer could be Umber's son. If so, does this mean that the Umbers have finally decided to turn their backs on the Starks and fully endorse the Bolton cause?"

That would be oathbreaking. It's possible. We'll see. It would be good to see Rickon and Osha again, but not so good to see another Stark fall into the hands of Ramsay.

By the way, actor Art Parkinson is now 14, and looks way different than he did when we last saw Rickon. Here he is in May 2015:

Britain San Andreas PremiereQuestion: How would the characters even be sure they had the right Rickon, when he'd look so different after all of that time? Just because he's with Osha (Natalia Tena)?

Here's the Episode 3 trailer:

See 'Castle' Season 8 Finale Photos, aka Stana Katic's Last Beckett Episode

Posted:

CASTLE - "Crossfire" - With their best lead in hand, Castle and Beckett are ready to take on LokSat. But an unforeseen twist puts their case - and their lives - in jeopardy, on the season finale of "Castle," MONDAY, MAY 16 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on the ABC Television Network. "Crossfire" (ABC/Byron Cohen)STANA KATICAs of now, there is still no word from ABC on the fate of "Castle." It may or may not return for Season 9. Even if it does, it will be without Stana Katic, who was not asked to return. So the Season 8 finale, which airs May 16, will be the end for Kate Beckett.

Here's ABC's official synopsis for Season 8, Episode 22, "Crossfire": "With their best lead in hand, Castle and Beckett are ready to take on LokSat. But an unforeseen twist puts their case - and their lives - in jeopardy, on the season finale of 'Castle.'"

TVLine just shared some photos from the finale, giving us clues on how Beckett's story may end. A lot of the photos are versions of the same set-up, with Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett hiding and spying on crates, or with the couple outside by a tree. But that one romantic shot ... sigh ... we're going to miss these two together, even if the actors (reportedly) won't miss each other.

Blake Lively Outsmarts a Shark in Bloody Intense 'The Shallows' Trailer

Posted:

Never mind a bigger boat, 's character in "The Shallows" would probably settle for a raft.

A new trailer for the summer horror thriller was just released, showing Lively's character, medical student/surfer Nancy, just trying to relax in "Paradise" when a shark attempts to bring her down. The shark does not keep her down, but we see it LEAP out of the water to chew on another surfer. Nancy takes refuge on a rock close-and-yet-so-far-from shore, and works out a plan to outsmart this new Jaws, "The Martian"-style.

Here's the trailer:'The Shallows' (2016) Trailer 2

And here's the official synopsis from Sony:

"In the taut thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy's ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude."

Apparently Ryan Reynolds inspired Blake to take on this role. As she told Entertainment Weekly, "My husband did a movie called 'Buried' and that was one of the reasons why I wanted to take on this movie so much, because I know how tough that was for him and how rewarding it was. It was terrifying and one of the most vulnerable things you can do but you gotta do it, right?"

"The Shallows" is currently scheduled for release on June 29.

Star Wars Day: Should Fans Thank Margaret Thatcher for May 4 Holiday?

Posted:

May 4th has become more powerful than the other days of the year could possibly imagine, thanks to its designation as Star Wars Day. The obvious pun #MayThe4thBeWithYou becomes an annual trending hashtag, but how did this holiday develop?

Apparently we can thank former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, or at least an ad released in her honor. (Don Draper, should we really thank you?)

The first Star Wars film, Episode IV, "A New Hope," was released in the U.S. on May 25, 1977. That's not quite May 4, so you can't credit the initial release for the holiday. However, two years after that, on May 4, 1979, Thatcher took office as prime minister, and that's where it all began.

Here's the history from the official Star Wars site:

One of the earliest known records of "May the 4th" used in popular culture is in 1979, as described here by author Alan Arnold while he was chronicling the making of The Empire Strikes Back for Lucasfilm:

Friday, May 4

"Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain's first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was 'May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,' further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all."

Once the Internet allowed Star Wars fans around the world to connect with one another, May the 4th soon became a grassroots tradition each year, with fans online and offline proclaiming it "Star Wars Day."

According to People, the term "May the Fourth Be With You" was used again on May 4, 1994 in a U.K. Parliament defense debate. But the Internet's Force wasn't strong back then, so May 4 didn't turn into a viral event until years later. The Toronto Underground Cinema organized the first official Star Wars Day in 2011, and now it's an international holiday.

Of course, now there's a whole Star Wars revival, with the success of Episode VII "The Force Awakens" -- starring the two people in the photo above -- plus the standalone film "Rogue One" coming later this year, and Episodes VIII and IX in the works.

Now, every May 4, the Internet can get together and celebrate with tweets, memes, gifs, and other ways to waste time as a family. May the 4th be with us, always!

Sick! Watch Chris Evans & Jimmy Fallon Get Their Privates Doused by Ice Water

Posted:

Freud would have a frigid field day with this sadistic, funny, and sexually awkward new "Tonight Show" game. So would Ramsay Bolton.

As you know, "Captain America: Civil War" is opening this Friday, May 6; was on Jimmy Fallon's show to promote the Marvel movie. Fallon said, because Cap was frozen for 70 years, they launched a new game off that theme -- Frozen Blackjack, aka "Chilly Willy."

The game was blackjack, with the loser of each round getting a PITCHER OF ICE WATER FUNNELED INTO THEIR PANTS. Yes. All caps was necessary. They put that funnel right down the front of their suits each time. It's hard to watch. And poor Evans -- he had two rounds of this. Then again, maybe not poor Evans, since it sounds like this was his idea, and his maniacal laugh each time was pretty scary.

They really should've forced Robert Downey Jr. to do this with Evans, as the real Cap vs. Tony war.

Watch and wince:

Ooh, that's cold.

Olivia Munn Explains Why She Said No to 'Deadpool'

Posted:

88th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsAt least has a valid reason for rejecting "Deadpool" in favor of "X-Men: Apocalypse," even if Captain Hindsight might declare that a bad call.

Munn is on the new cover of American Way Magazine, talking about her role as sword-wielding telepathic mutant Psylocke in "Apocalypse," which opens May 27. Munn said when she was offered Psyclocke, she was warned that there wouldn't be much dialogue, but she'd have "an important presence" in the movie. Munn said that was OK as long as there was a fight sequence, 'cause she wanted in on that. "The fight scene," told the magazine with a smile, "could be her monologue."
However, she had been offered a role in a very different "X-Men" film, "Deadpool," playing the girlfriend of 's Wade Wilson. That role eventually went to , 'cause Munn turned it down.

Why? She didn't want to play "the girlfriend." Not again. Not even this guy's girlfriend:

That's why she went for Psylocke instead, despite "Deadpool" going on to be a fan favorite and top R-rated movie around the world. "I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, 'Yes, as long as you're not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.' And they said, 'Yes, that's an important part.'"

So she took that role, and ended up on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in character. But months before the film came out, when she was talking to American Way, she sounded braced for disappointment. "You can do the first-look cover on Entertainment Weekly, but if they've chopped up some stuff or taken out moments and the fight scene is reduced for whatever reason, then the moment is gone."

That was a while ago, and you have to hope that by now she's seen the finished product and approves. She is featured in the trailers, but so are a dozen other characters. But good for her for taking a stand against more roles as "the girlfriend." It's good to draw the line, even if she might regret drawing it before such a hit movie. But she may never regret it at all, and that's even better.
