Big News! Alden Ehrenreich Is Your New Han Solo Posted: 06 May 2016 01:00 AM PDT Harrison Ford had been acting for 10 years before Star Wars catapulted him to stardom in 1977. Sure, he made an impression as hot-rodder Bob Falfa in American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas, and was menacing as a mysterious agent in Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, but he didn't break out until he potrayed the intrepid Han Solo. Will the upcoming spin-off movie revolving around a young Han Solo do the same for its star? The movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street), based on a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, and the casting process has been underway for months, with thousands of candidates under consideration. In January, we heard that eight actors had made the shortlist for the role, a list that was... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The Last Sci-Fi Blog: Marvel's 'Obi-Wan & Anakin' Will Make You Love the Prequel Era Posted: 05 May 2016 09:30 PM PDT There is nothing more tired and trite than taking to the internet so you can talk about how much you hate the Star Wars prequels. We’ve been doing it for over a decade. We’ve beaten this dead Tauntaun for as long as and as hard as any other subject in the history of popular culture. Everything that can be said about the failure of George Lucas’ return to the beloved universe he kickstarted in 1977 has been said. There is nothing left to add to that discussion. However, it turns out that there is something to be said about learning to enjoy the prequel era, even if you still despise the prequels. All it took was one good comic book miniseries. When Marvel announced a miniseries titled Obi-Wan & Anakin, I honestly felt disappointed. I felt like Marvel was... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch Nicolas Cage Act Out a Monologue From 'Jaws' in the 'USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage' Trailer Posted: 05 May 2016 08:00 PM PDT If you love Quint's monologue in Jaws about the USS Indianapolis but always wanted to see the whole thing dramatized, now is your chance. Well, actually you've had a chance since 1991, when the TV movie Mission of the Shark: The Saga of the USS Indianapolis first aired. But now you have another shot, this time with a big-budget theatrical effort starring Nicolas Cage. The movie is titled USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, and it comes out later this month in limited release. So technically now is still not your time for another shot, except for the fact that its trailer is long enough and detailed enough that you do kind of get a full glimpse of the tragic naval disaster. The real life cruiser was torpedoed by the Japanese during World War II on July 30... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Our Marvel Expert Reviews 'Captain America: Civil War' Posted: 05 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT Captain America: Civil War is so good it even makes Avengers: Age of Ultron better. Civil War leans on the arguments had between Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Tony Stark aka Iron Man, as well as major Age of Ultron plot developments like the destruction of an Eastern bloc city, the creation of the android Vision (Paul Bettany), and the inexperience and raw power of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). But there are two films providing a direct path to Civil War, as threads from The Winter Soldier also get picked up here and worked into a very good adaption of a best-selling comic book mini-series. Unlike Age of Ultron, which borrowed the title and villain and nothing else from the comic that bears its name, Civil War displays some measure of actual fidelity to its source... Watch Vice's Cool New Video Series Exploring Obscure, Outsider Filmmakers Posted: 05 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT Making movies sucks. That's the truth people in the film industry so rarely talk about. Sure, if you're making a $200 million movie, life's probably not that bad. Stressful, sure (that's a lot of pressure), but at that level you've got a pretty good assurance that at the very least people will some day see your movie. That's not the case in independent film. People can toil away for years and years working on a movie. They can pour their heart and soul into it and drain their bank accounts and lose friends and loved ones in the process, and then end up with a movie no one ever sees. It happens far, far more often than most people will ever realize. But now, thanks to a new series at Vice, hopefully some of these unheralded filmmakers will finally get their... The New 'Power Rangers' Look Like Alien Iron Men Posted: 05 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT "We're creating, or I should say re-imagining, the world in a cool, updated, contemporary, really fun way." That's what Power Rangers director Dean Israelite told us about the reboot when we talked to him last June. At that stage, though, he'd only been on the project for a few weeks. Now that it's actually filming, we're starting to get glimpses of what he meant by that. We've seen Elizabeth Banks' villainous Rita Repulsa and now, thanks to EW, we've got our first shot of the new rangers and their suits. They all have a glowing light in their chest and have traded out the kids' show's iconic spandex for a hardened, shiny look, so it's tough to think these weren't heavily influenced by Iron Man. On the flip side... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
What's Next For the 'X-Men' Universe? 'New Mutants' Director Teases Possible Team Members Posted: 05 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT After X-Men: Apocalypse, what comes next for Fox's mutant universe? The third installment of the Wolverine series, featuring the final lead performance by Hugh Jackman, will be released on March 3, 2017. After that, Fox has claimed release dates of October 6, 2017, January 12, 2018, and Juy 13, 2018 for productions based on Marvel properties, without revealing which titles are involved. We know that plans are underway for a sequel to smash hit Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, as well as Gambit, to be played by Channing Tatum. Potentially, however, the biggest title may be The New Mutants, to be directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). Producer Simon Kinberg has described it as having "more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it," and we've already seen... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 05 May 2016 12:00 PM PDT Papillon: Charlie Hunnam (Crimson Peak, above) is eyeing the starring role in Papillon, a remake of a prison escape drama. Based on an autobiography by Henri Charriere, the 1973 original starred Steve McQueen as an unjustly convicted man sentenced to life imprisonment on a harsh South American prison island. He plots to escape with the help of a timid fellow prisoner (Dustin Hoffman). Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) wrote a new screenplay; Michael Noer is attached to direct. [Deadline] Battle of Midway: Roland Emmerich (Independence Day: Resurgence) wants to make a movie about the historic Battle of Midway. The battle between the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy took place over four days in June 1942 and proved to be a decisive victory for the U.S. armed forces...
