Today's Google Doodle Is a Lesson In Giant Monster-Movie History

Posted: 07 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

If you're one of many Americans not familiar with Eiji Tsuburaya, that's all the more reason to appreciate today's Google Doodle. For the search engine's daily redesign of their logo, Google celebrates the birthday of Tsuburaya, who was born on July 7, 1901. You're definitely familiar with his work, as he co-created the title creature for the original 1954 version of Godzilla, coming up with the idea to portray the monster as a man in a suit rather than through stop-motion animation. Before that, he was already an effects legend in Japan for his work with realistic miniatures in war films, such as the 1942 Pearl Harbor-bombing-commemorative propaganda effort Hawai Mare oki kaisen (The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya), scenes from which the U.S...

'Lego Movie' Directors Land the Han Solo 'Star Wars' Movie, Plus: When Will We See Vader Next?

Posted: 07 Jul 2015 07:25 PM PDT

A standalone Han Solo movie has been buzzed about pretty much since the first day the world learned Disney was going to be making more Star Wars movies. But every time Disney made an official announcement, it was nowhere to be seen. Until today. Disney hasn't confirmed it yet (perhaps because they were hoping to announce it this Friday at Comic-Con), but The Hollywood Reporter is announcing that The Lego Movie directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have landed the highly coveted job of the solo Han Solo movie. [Update: StarWars.com has confirmed the news.] According to StarWars.com, the story "focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos...

Ben Affleck Tried to Convince Kevin Smith to Make a 'Jay and Silent Bob vs. Hellraiser' Movie

Posted: 07 Jul 2015 06:00 PM PDT

There's a fun joke in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where the two adventurous slackers bumble their way onto the Miramax studio lot and run from the set of Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season onto the set of Scream 4. It's a good gag that cheekily pokes fun at Miramax making unnecessary sequels to some of their movies, but apparently it was inspirational for studio honcho Bob Weinstein. Kevin Smith recently revealed in an interview with Crave that after Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back came out, Weinstein wanted Smith to do a proper crossover movie with the characters. And who better to pit Jay and Silent Bob against than some '80s horror icons? Bob Weinstein said to me one day on the phone, this was after Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he goes, “You know...

Posted: 07 Jul 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Netflix has been doubling down on its original content this year, but since so much of the focus is on TV shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, it's easy to forget that they're also expanding on the movie front, too. But now the upstart studio has announced a bunch of release dates, so go ahead and mark your calendars so you won't need a reminder later. In chronological order, we've got: Beasts of No Nation Release Date: October 16 Directed by: Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) Starring: Idris Elba Why it's a big deal: This is Netflix' first major bid for some serious drama glory, and they may very well find it thanks to this also being Fukunaga's first project since directing all of the first season of True Detective. Elba stars as an...

The new version of Ghostbusters started production last month, which means that director Paul Feig and his cast and crew are extremely busy nowadays. But that hasn't kept Feig from paying attention to social media; he has more than 1.39 million followers on Twitter, and he's kept up a steady stream of tweets so far. For example, he took time over the weekend to respond to a follower in Germany who asked for more information on how to make a proton pack.   @GhostbustersDE Here you go! pic.twitter.com/GAuphU5ASI — Paul Feig (@paulfeig) July 4, 2015     When another fan asked for more detailed plans for the proton pack, Feig kindly obliged. @gbmarkf @GhostbustersDE This is all I can give you for now.
