Today in Movie Culture: 'Ant-Man' Lego Trailer, 'Jurassic Park' High Heels Edition and More Posted: 21 Jul 2015 11:00 PM PDT Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: Trailer Remake of the Day: This obligatory Lego version of the Ant-Man trailer is a little late, but it's very well made (via Design Taxi): Movie Parody of the Day: We're still making fun of the scene in Jurassic World where Bryce Dallas Howard runs in heels. XVP Comedy has added similar footwear to the feet of every character -- human and dinosaur -- throughout the Jurassic Park series for a new special edition (via A.V. Club): Alternate Dimension Movie of the Day: In another world, maybe Clark Gable could have played Iron Man, though he died three years before the Marvel superhero's debut. Posted: 21 Jul 2015 10:00 PM PDT When Alex Garland revealed that his next film would be an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's novel Annihilation, the first thing I did was order a copy. After all, if this book was worthy of rousing the interest of the man who directed Ex Machina, then it was surely something worth reading. Having now finished the book in a single marathon session (it's a hard one to put down), I see what Garland saw in the material. As written, Annihilation is not a movie...but it is a powerful spark that ignites a fire deep within the imagination. This eerie story is science fiction at its most unsettling and horror at its most ambitious. The book itself isn't particularly cinematic, but the possibilities of twisting it, contorting it, and massaging its ideas into a cinematic shape are... The 'Minecraft' Movie Finds a New Director In An Unlikely Place Posted: 21 Jul 2015 08:30 PM PDT It seems like not since the original Mario Bros. has a video game penetrated pop culture as far and wide as Minecraft has over the last few years. Minecraft products are sold pretty which in every store a kid can wander around in. If you see a kid taping away on a tablet screen, they're probably playing it, and if they're not, they're probably watching a video of someone else playing it. Minecraft is, in a word, huge. So of course it's getting turned into a movie. Were this 2013, this news would be a tad worrisome because Minecraft doesn't actually have a story to it. It's a game that fosters creativity and world building. It's not rich with story lore and complex mythos. The player basically just gathers resources and then does whatever they... New 'The Good Dinosaur' Trailer Aims for the Kiddos Posted: 21 Jul 2015 07:00 PM PDT Pixar has long had a reputation as being a company that makes animated movies that can be enjoyed just as much by adults as they can kids. It started with Toy Story and has continued ever since, even if a Cars does sneak in there every now and then. This dual nature of their movies is basically what separated a Pixar movie from all of the other animation studios out there. Or, at least that used to be the case, but lately we've been getting remarkable animated movies from a bunch of non-Pixar studios. The new trailer for The Good Dinosaur, however, looks like it's aiming squarely at the kiddos for now. That may not be the case when it roars to theaters on November 25, 2015, but between this and the teaser trailer, there's nearly zero story unveiled and really just a... The Surprising Ways 'Mission: Impossible 2' Affected the Course of Movie History Posted: 21 Jul 2015 04:00 PM PDT When many of us think of Sir Ian McKellen, two iconic roles come to mind: Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men. And vice versa -- it's hard to imagine anyone else playing those characters on the big screen (well, Michael Fassbender also plays Magneto, very well, but we're talking the older version of the mutant villain). Those franchises could have easily been very different, though, as a result of very different actors filling the parts. Sean Connery was offered Gandalf, for instance, but he turned it down. So did Christopher Plummer. Same with McKellen's X-Men co-star and BFF, Patrick Stewart. Christopher Lee apparently campaigned for the role but was cast as Saruman instead. As for Magneto, the X-Men's foe could have been portrayed by Terence... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Star Wars: Episode VIII' Needs Villain, Wants Benicio Del Toro Posted: 21 Jul 2015 02:00 PM PDT Benicio Del Toro is in very early discussions to play a villainous role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, according to The Wrap. No other details were reported, and no official confirmation has been made. Rian Johnson was first reported as writer/director back in June 2014, and since then we have heard very little. That's not surprising since it's the followup to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which itself has been wrapped in secrecy. Even though Johnson will be working within a well-defined cinematic universe, we're trusting that his distinctive sensibilities -- as evidenced in time-travel action picture Looper, for example -- will shine through, and that includes the role of the villain. Del Toro would certainly be a great choice. His career... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Posted: 21 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT X-Men: Apocalypse: A new photo from X-Men: Apocalypse gives a behind-the-scenes, rubble-filled peek at Cairo, the city where Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) first discovered Storm (Alexandra Shipp) in the Uncanny X-Men comic book series, and a continuing refuge for Storm over the years. Look for the movie in theaters on May 27, 2016. [The Hollywood Reporter] Emoji: Sony Pictures Animation will develop an animated movie starring Emoji, the small digital images or figures often used in social media communications. Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis will write the screenplay, and Leondis is set to direct. Leondis is an animation veteran whose credits include the 2008 family comedy Igor.
