You're Not Going to See a New 'Star Wars' Trailer at Comic-Con Posted: There is a great disturbance in the Force at Comic-Con. Contrary to internet rumor, Lucasfilm will not unveil a new trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at San Diego this weekend, EW reports. Lucasfilm's panel, scheduled for Friday, July 10, will instead include a behind-the-scenes look at the production, with director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and cowriter Lawrence Kasdan in attendance. Now don't Force choke anyone just yet. According to EW, word 'round the campfire is that "Force Awakens" cast members will also be in attendance (Harrison Ford, perhaps?), specifically those who have yet to speak publicly about their roles in the film. Fans can expect to see the new trailer sometime this fall. Or, if we're lucky, later this summer at Disney's D23 fan convention in Anaheim this August. Until then, rewatch the most recent trailer for the fabillionth time below. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters Dec. 18. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Han Solo 'Star Wars' Spinoff Due in 2018, 'LEGO Movie' Directors Attached Posted: UPDATE: Disney has now confirmed THR's report about the Han Solo spinoff, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller's involvement in the project. Check out the new details in our update below, followed by our original report. That was fast. Less than an hour after The Hollywood Reporter posted a story about "The LEGO Movie" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller taking the helm of a new, Han Solo-centric "Star Wars" spinoff, Disney has confirmed the project, and also announced a new synopsis and release date for the flick. The as-yet-untitled film is due out on May 25, 2018, and will focus on Solo as a young man. The official logline: "The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley." Lord and Miller also released a statement about the flick, and it's just as geeky and fan service-y as you'd expect from the affable directors. "This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with," the statement said. "We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all." Original "Star Wars" trilogy scribe Lawrence Kasdan, who also co-write the script for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," will co-write the Solo spinoff with his son, Jon Kasdan. With such a powerhouse creative team, this movie already sounds like a winner. We can't wait for 2018. ORIGINAL REPORT: Rumors about the plots of the planned "Star Wars" spinoff films have been circulating for years, but now, it seems that one scenario -- and set of directors -- has been squared away. The Hollywood Reporter writes that a Han Solo-centric spinoff is currently in the works, and has already landed a directing duo: Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helmed "The LEGO Movie" and "21 Jump Street." According to the trade, Lord and Miller's project is separate from one that was to have been directed by Josh Trank ("The Fantastic Four"), who left that film earlier this year. This new Solo movie is a different tale entirely, per THR's report, and will focus on Han Solo as a young man. It's unclear, however, if this new film has any connection to the rumor that was passed around late last year about another potential Solo spinoff film. Aaron Paul was the rumored choice among producers for a part in the project (not necessarily to play Solo), though the star later said that he was never approached. No word yet on whether or not Lord or Miller will also write this flick, though THR's report indicates that taking on the project means they may have to forgo a slew of others, including "23 Jump Street" and the rumored "Flash" film they were developing. Disney and Lucasfilm declined to comment on THR's report, so we'll have to wait for official word before we know more details. Suffice it to say, we're excited to see what Lord and Miller can build with the "Star Wars" universe. The 23 Scariest Teen Horror Movies Ever, Ranked Posted: Horror filmmakers have a special fondness for shedding teenage blood. After all, teens are horror's primary audience, so it's especially frightening -- and cathartic -- to see teens like themselves targeted by deadly evil, often just for behaving like normal adolescents. In the last four decades, movies about teens targeted by slashers have become the mainstay of movie horror. With "The Gallows" hitting theaters this Friday -- a teen horror movie with echoes of "Carrie," "Prom Night," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and more -- it's worth looking back at some of the most celebrated teen horror movies of all time. Just remember, don't separate from the group, and don't have sex. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Excellent: Harry Shearer Will Return to 'The Simpsons' After All Posted: After a very public contract dispute, "The Simpsons" star Harry Shearer will be back for the show's 27th season. Entertainment Weekly reports that Shearer has just inked a deal to revive his large, beloved cast of characters -- including Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and many more -- for the next season, and beyond. The site writes:
Shearer caused a firestorm back in May when he announced on Twitter that he was leaving the long-running animated program. The actor had indicated that he would not return to the show because he was being kept from pursuing outside projects, though "Simpsons" producer Al Jean disputed that claim. According to an Entertainment Weekly report from the time, Shearer's packed scheduled was the real culprit, with the actor allegedly refusing to record his dialogue in a timely manner. The plan had been to replace Shearer with other voice actors, rather than kill off his trove of characters, but Jean had indicated that he hoped the actor would reconsider and return to the show. EW reports that while negotiations with Shearer continued, production on season 27 of the show did indeed begin without the actor, though the show "already had seven holdover episodes from last season in the can, and those include Shearer's voices." "Shearer's deal was completed in enough time to avoid [recasting the roles]," EW reports, "and his temporary absence behind the scenes will not be significantly felt on the new season." We're glad that Shearer finally agreed to return, and that "The Simpsons" will both look and sound the same when it returns this fall. Season 27 is set to premiere on September 27 on Fox. 'Ghostbusters' Reboot Casts Its Main Villain Posted: The "Ghostbusters" have a new bad guy to defeat - Neil Casey. "Who?" is probably what you're wondering, considering that Paul Feig's reboot boasts a star-studded cast. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones are playing the busters, and Chris Hemsworth is on board as the receptionist. Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, and Cecily Strong will also appear in the movie. Casey is primarily a writer whose credits include "Saturday Night Live" (a good match, then, since Wiig, McKinnon, Jones, and Strong are all current or former "SNL"-ers), "Inside Amy Schumer," and "The Kroll Show." As an actor, he's appeared in "Veep" and "Broad City." And most notably - and likely the reason he got this gig - he stars in Feig's Yahoo original series "Other Space." No word on what his character, Rowan, is like or how he gets involved in the ghost invasion that takes over Manhattan. "Ghostbusters" is scheduled for release July 22, 2016. 'James Bond: The Musical' Is Coming to Broadway in 2017 Posted: We've seen James Bond tussling with bad guys, driving fast cars in chases, firing guns, and seducing sexy sirens. Now, it seems we'll get to see him do something totally new - singing, maybe even dancing. Yes, in news of the strange, James Bond is coming to Broadway! Playbill reports that producer Merry Saltzman - daughter of legendary Bond film producer Harry Saltzman - has secured the rights to turn Ian Fleming's novels into a stage musical. Novelist Dave Clarke ("Keeping Hannah Waiting") will write the book, and country composer Jay Henry Weisz will handle the music and lyrics. Producers told Playbill that the musical will have an original storyline, "several Bond villains, plus some new ones," as "our own Bond girl." They hope to open the show in late 2017 or early 2018. Casting is still undetermined, though it's highly improbable that Daniel Craig would be involved (though he can sing!). As for 007 on the big screen, Craig stars in "Spectre" opening on November 6. Don't expect any singing in it. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Live-Action Prince Charming Movie in the Works at Disney Posted: The trend of turning animated fairy tales into live-action movies continues, this time with a different kind of character at the center - a dude! Variety reports that Disney has bought a script by Matt Fogel that tells the story of Prince Charming. Details are scarce, but the movie is being described as a comedy from the point of view of Charming's brother, who never lived up to the family name. This Prince Charming project, should it move forward, would join a long list of live-action fairy tales in recent years. It all started in 2010 with the blockbuster hit "Alice in Wonderland," and since then, we've gotten "Maleficent" and "Cinderella." Coming next are "Beauty and the Beast" with Emma Watson and "Alice Through the Looking Glass." These live-action fairy tale re-imaginings have focused on female protagonists, so it's interesting to see a male character - one whose never made much of an impression, other than being handsome, rich, and royal - get his turn in the spotlight. 'Ocean's Eleven' and 'Karate Kid' Producer Jerry Weintraub Dead at 77 Posted: Veteran producer Jerry Weintraub, a well-known force in Hollywood, died of cardiac arrest in Santa Barbara Monday at the age of 77. Weintraub was an old-school impresario and showman who started out as a concert promoter and music manager, then became a successful movie producer in a career that spanned five decades. "All life was a theater and I wanted to put it up on a stage," Weintraub wrote in his memoir. "I wanted to set the world under a marquee that read: 'Jerry Weintraub Presents.'" Born in Brooklyni n 1937, Weintraub first broke into showbiz through music. He worked with Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, and Frank Sinatra, and managed artists including Led Zeppelin and John Denver. In 1975, Weintraub moved into film production with Robert Altman's "Nashville." In the next decade, he producer more hits, the biggest of them all being "The Karate Kid." But then, in 1990, the producer had a major setback - his company declared bankruptcy. He got back on track in 2001 with what would become a huge franchise - the star-studded "Ocean's Eleven." Weintraub even made cameos in that movie, as well as "Ocean's Twelve" and "Ocean's Thirteen." George Clooney, who starred in all three films, released this statement about Weintraub: "In the coming days there will be tributes, about our friend Jerry Weintraub. We'll laugh at his great stories, and applaud his accomplishments. And in the years to come the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died. To his family and friends, Amal and I send our love. And to those who didn't know him we send our deepest sympathy. You would have loved him." Weintraub's most recent producing credits include the 2013 HBO movie "Behind the Candelabra" and next year's "Tarzan" movie. In his personal life, Weintraub was an ardent supporter of the Republican party and a close friend of former president George H.W. Bush, who said, "Jerry was an American original, who earned his success by the sheer force of his instinct, drive, and larger-than-life personality. He had a passion for life, and throughout the ups and downs of his prolific career it was clear just how much he loved show business." Weintraub is survived by his estranged wife, Jane Morgan; his longtime companion, Susie Ekins; and four children - Michael, Julie, Jamie, and Jody. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
