These Three Incredible Film Fest Line-ups Prove 2015 Has Too Many Exciting Movies Posted: 30 Jul 2015 08:38 PM PDT It may be hard to believe that we're already over halfway through the year, but at least that means we're easing out of the big summer movie season and into the prestige-heavy fall when a lot of the year's big awards contenders make their debuts. This week saw three of the biggest film festivals in the world, where many of these films premiere, announce their first waves of programmed titles, so we decided to round-up just a handful of our most anticipated movies below. Even if you can't make it to any of these festivals, it's a good idea to keep an eye on their line-ups. If a movie plays one of these, it's a pretty reliable sign that it's worth your time. Fantastic Fest Fantastic Fest takes place at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Read the Original 'Vacation' Short Story Written By John Hughes Posted: 30 Jul 2015 06:49 PM PDT Did you know that the new movie Vacation is based on a true story? Well, okay, techically it's a continuation of a series of movies that started off with a 1983 feature adapted from a short story that was based on real events. John Hughes wrote the source tale, titled Vacation '58, for National Lampoon magazine back in the late '70s, while he was primarily employed at a Chicago ad agency. The story was based on a cross-country road trip he took with his own family as a kid. It's not quite memoir because he changed the names and surely exaggerated a lot of the funnier bits, but it reads as real as something by humorist Jean Shepherd, who worked with similarly autobiographical material (and coincidentally also saw his stories turned into a hit... Watch: In the 'Room' Trailer, Brie Larson's Talent Can Not Be Contained Posted: 30 Jul 2015 04:30 PM PDT Brie Larson can currently be seen in theaters playing Amy Schumer's sister in Trainwreck. It's your basic rom-com supporting role, but Larson provides more depth than is required for such a character. Almost too much, nearly overshadowing the leading lady. She probably can't help it; she's just an extremely talented actress. And hopefully she's garnering new fans through the hit comedy, fans who can now get excited about Larson's next starring gig, a drama titled Room. Adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by its author, Emma Donoghue, Room is about a mother and son confined to a 10-by-10-foot shed, which she calls "Room." They are trapped together, but at least they seem to have a relatively... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
We Already Know One Huge, Crazy Action Sequence in 'Mission: Impossible 6' Posted: 30 Jul 2015 03:00 PM PDT In Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, we see Tom Cruise hang on to the side of a plane as it takes off. We see him drive a motorcycle at insane speeds and hold his breath underwater for six minutes -- and that's only the beginning! Hands down, this is one of the year's best action movies, and those who've seen it are already clamoring for more. Good news is Tom Cruise is already talking about the next one, as is Rogue Nation director Chris McQuarrie. There's no word on whether McQuarrie will return for the next installment (the franchise is notorious for using a different director for each one), though he did tease a wild action sequence that was cut from Rogue Nation, and says it will most likely show up in the next one. And about that sequence... tell us if... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 30 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT In January 2002, the Boston Globe published the first in a series of stories about the Boston Catholic Archdiocese and their alleged coverup of the sexual abuse of children by priests over a period of decades. A national controversy ensued. For months before that, however, the newspaper's "Spotlight Team" had been investigating the allegations, interviewing countless victims and witnesses to dig up what had happened. It's taken 13 years for a film version to appear, but now the first trailer for Spotlight has been released, and it generates a good amount of genuine, dramatic tension. The trailer sets up the premise well, and also establishes a strong tone of authority. The cast is led by Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams as two of the... Posted: 30 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT Equals: Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult star in Equals, a science-fiction drama imagining a world "without greed, poverty, violence, or emotion." That is, until a new disease arises, threatening the world with "love, depression, sensitivity, and fear." The first official photos suggest a forbidding environment for their characters. Drake Doremus (Like Crazy) directed; the movie will debut at the Venice Film Festival in early September. [Collider] Stronger: Jake Gyllenhaal is in early talks to star in Stronger, based on the true story of Jeff Burman, who survived the bombing at the Boston Marathon in 2013 but lost both his legs in the terrorist attack. Burman wrote a book on his experiences, co-authored with Bret Witter, and John Pollano... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
