'Star Wars' Rumors: Is Donnie Yen Joining the Universe? Is 'Rogue One' Already Filming?

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 09:30 PM PDT

There's no grand mystery why the Chinese box office is playing an increasingly important part in the movie industry. Over one billion potential audience members live there and they're understandably more likely to see a big Hollywood movie if it's set in China or has a Chinese star in its cast somewhere. A new rumor has it that even movies set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away are paying attention. Twitch Film, which specializes in covering the international movie scene, picked up on a local rumor that Chinese megastar Donnie Yen (Ip Man) would be joining the cast of the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: Episode VIII. They admitted that the source of the rumor was somewhat tabloid-y in nature, but that the rumor was worth sharing because it fit with something...

Watch a Pitch Reel for a Version of 'John Carter of Mars' That Never Got Made

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 08:30 PM PDT

These days, the movies that never happened are almost as popular as the movies that did. In some cases, maybe more so. Disney's adaptation of John Carter bombed so badly that many likely now wish Paramount's take on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel had happened -- presuming it wouldn't have been any worse. Just as in the case of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune and Tim Burton's Superman Lives and others on the way, the story of Kerry Conran's abandoned version of John Carter for Paramount could probably do well as a crowdfunded documentary. But why wait for that to see a bunch of concept art, test footage and other goodies from Conran's pre-production on John Carter? Ain't It Cool News head honcho Harry Knowles, who was attached to Paramount's...

'Ash vs Evil Dead' Images Bring Back the Chainsaw, the Necronomicon, and Another Old Friend

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 06:00 PM PDT

It's been nearly 35 years since Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and a chainsaw made horror movies a better place. Since then we've gotten two fantastic sequels to The Evil Dead, one very gory remake, a few comic books, and a ton of fan fiction about Ash Williams kicking deadite ass. But even with all of that Evil Dead goodness floating around, fans have still been clamoring for Ash's return. And soon they shall have it, thanks to Ash vs Evil Dead, a new TV series. We'll be getting a full trailer look at the show later this week, but before Comic-Con rolls around Starz has been dolling out some early looks at the show that continues the story of that original trilogy. Above you can see the first look at Campbell in his iconic Ash outfit, and there are some pages...

Striking New 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2' Posters Break Out the War Paint

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 04:30 PM PDT

It may be weird to fall in love with a marketing campaign, but The Hunger Games just makes it so dang easy. Instead of simply dumping a bunch of photoshopped posters of floating heads online, Lionsgate's marketing team has consistently risen to the same level of quality of the actual movies they're selling. The difference between a Hunger Games poster and your average movie poster is that they're not just a role call of who is in the movie. A Hunger Games poster is a soulful reminder of what is at stake in the story. They engage fans on an emotional level, which is just not something you can say of most publicity materials. We'll be getting a ton of new posters and trailers and TV spots and whoknowswhats this week thanks to Comic-Con, but the team behind The Hunger...

New 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' Photos Reveal Badass Zombie Slayers

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 03:00 PM PDT

New photos from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies suggest that the forthcoming big-screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel may not be exactly what we've been anticipating. First published in 2009, Grahame-Smith's book became an unexpected bestseller, thanks in part to the novelty of introducing the undead into the world created by Jane Austen. The writer followed that up with his novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was made into a broadly comic, self-consciously silly blockbuster in 2012 by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted). That set audience expectations for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but a new interview suggests that the filmmakers have something else in mind. As in Austen's classic book, the movie will revolve around Elizabeth Bennett (Lily...

Movie News: 'Selma' Director Passes on 'Black Panther'; Watch 'Ant-Man' Ask for Avengers Assistance in New Trailer

Posted: 06 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Black Panther: Director Ava DuVernay (Selma) confirms that she met with Marvel executives about making Black Panther, but decided not to move forward. The movie will star Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, ruler of the fictional country of Wakanda. "I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be," DuVernay commented. "In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn't see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.” [Essence]   Deadpool: A new promotional photo for Deadpool shows the Marvel comic book character turning a murderous eye on a beloved childhood toy. Ryan Reynolds stars as wisecracking mercenary Wade Wilson, who seeks vengeance against the...
