The New 'Hotel Transylvania 2' Trailer Shows You Its Hilarious Pouty Bat Face Posted: 17 Jun 2015 08:00 PM PDT As you grow up, your relationship with animated movies tends to evolve. When you're younger, you watch every single one that comes out. If it's animated, you're seeing it. Then you grow up, and you tend to get a bit pickier, sticking only with those that seem to get rave reviews. And then if you happen to have kids, you go back to the start, only your child finds one that they love and you get stuck watching it over and over and over forever. Usually that makes you hate whatever movie it is (ask most parents what they really think about Frozen), but sometimes it makes you like it even more. For me that was the case with Hotel Transylvania, which told a fun, endearing, and, most importantly, original story with a set of movie monsters that have been shackled to the... 'Halloween Returns' Will Ignore Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' Reboot Posted: 17 Jun 2015 07:00 PM PDT Fan service is a big part of movies lately, and one of the most popular ways to provide this service is to retcon franchises that have gone sour. Superman Returns picked up as a direct follow-up to Superman II, ignoring the other sequels that came after it, for example. Sometimes a franchise can get clever with the service and totally wipe out events of an unliked sequel via time travel, a la X-Men: Days of Future Past (which like Superman Returns was directed by Bryan Singer). Retconning is so favored an idea that it's become easy fodder for rumors. Jurassic World was wrongly reported to be a direct sequel to Jurassic Park that dismisses the other two installments. Similarly, many were happy to hear that Neill Blomkamp's upcoming Alien movie... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Run All Night,' 'Chappie,' 'Spirited Away' and More Posted: 17 Jun 2015 06:00 PM PDT The latest from Neill Blomkamp Chappie: When District 9 came out, many understandably heralded Neill Blomkamp as one of the next great hopes for original sci-fi movies. After Elysium failed to really deliver profoundly beyond some great visuals, the twinkle began to fade a bit. And now with Chappie out, the spark is, unfortunately, flicking out. Chappie of course looks great, but that's really all it has going for it. It's a tonal mess, flip-flopping between comedy and cheese and violence. The script is wacky, the morals are wacky, and the story is uninspiring. It's all a bit of a bummer, really. But hey, if District 9 blew you away and you actually loved Elysium, then maybe Chappie will work for you. That's a big, big maybe, though. But at least you can... Film Face-Off: 'Jurassic Park' vs 'Jurassic World' Posted: 17 Jun 2015 03:00 PM PDT Welcome back to Jurassic Park/World! It's been 22 years since Jurassic Park stomped all over our collective imaginations (in a good way). Now, let's ignore The Lost World and Jurassic Park III, since the new film, Jurassic World, seems to do just that. Things have changed. The awe of science has been replaced by corporate greed. The park features a petting zoo, water park, and gyrospheres. Don't worry, there are still plenty of foolish humans, making rash decisions, which means eventually dinosaurs run amok. In this week's Film Face-off we'll put Jurassic World's amoking and more against Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park. The (Human) Chemistry Jurassic Park Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Now You Can Read The 'X-Files' Episode That Was Turned Into 'Final Destination' Posted: 17 Jun 2015 01:30 PM PDT Back in the early '90s Jeffrey Reddick was just an aspiring screenwriter looking to break into Hollywood. His plan to land an agent was to write a spec script for one of his favorite shows, The X-Files. So he came up with a plot involving someone who has a premonition about a plane crash that results in a few people's lives getting saved, only to then have death hunt down those that should have been killed on the plane. The script landed Reddick an agent, who then passed it along to someone at New Line. New Line loved it and asked him if he could turn it into a feature film. And thus Flight 180, born of a love for The X-Files, was on track to become a movie that had nothing to do with The X-Files. That was back in 1994. It took another six years for it to become... Posted: 17 Jun 2015 12:00 PM PDT Passengers: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are moving closer to starring together in the sci-fi romance Passengers. The project has not yet received an official "green light" to start production in September, but pre-production has begun. If it goes forward as expected, Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) would direct the big-budget film from an original screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) about two people on a years-long journey through space. [Heat Vision] Meg: Eli Roth is in talks to direct Meg, a thriller about a giant shark. It's based on the first in a series of novels by Steve Alten about a deep sea diver who discovers the modern-day existence of a Megaladon, a prehistoric, predatory sea creature that threatens California; in the movie, China...
