'Guardians of the Galaxy' Sequel Gets Awesome 'Vol. 2' Title

Posted:

Taking a cue from the first film's killer soundtrack, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel now has an awesome title.

Director James Gunn confirmed on Twitter that the follow-up flick will be called "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," a nod to the title of the "Guardians" soundtrack (and key plot point), "Awesome Mix Vol. 1." This can only mean that "Awesome Mix Vol. 2" -- which Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) discovered at the end of the first movie -- will play a similarly significant role in the "Guardians" sequel (or at the very least, just be a great collection of songs). In a follow-up post on Facebook, Gunn wrote that some fans had actually already figured out the title, thanks to some super-sleuthing after Gunn posted a cover image of the flick's script. Fortunately for Gunn, though, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige accidentally let the title slip while doing press for upcoming Marvel film "Ant-Man," freeing the director to confirm the news online.

Yes, the official title of the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.Kevin Feige...

Posted by James Gunn on Monday, June 29, 2015
We like the title lots, both because it's on-brand for the series, but also because it eschews the tired trend of adding ridiculous, long-winded subtitles to blockbuster franchises. And that quirky choice is also in keeping with the ragtag flick's shtick of standing out from the rest of the superhero crowd; we'd expect nothing less from Star-Lord and co.

Stay tuned for more. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is due in theaters on May 5, 2017.

The New 'Spider-Man' Movie Is Inspired by John Hughes, 'Inside Out'

Posted:

2013 National Board Of Review Awards - Inside ArrivalsEven though it will be the third iteration of the character, Marvel wants you to know that the newest version of "Spider-Man," starring Tom Holland, will be like nothing you've seen from the MCU before, thanks in large part to its unique influences.

In an interview with Birth.Movies.Death., Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed that the creative team behind the character's reboot is taking inspiration from an unlikely source: '80s teen movie icon John Hughes. Speaking to the plethora of supporting characters from the Spidey comics that have yet to make it to the big screen, Feige said that fans can expect more members of Peter Parker's social circle (and the awkward teenage antics that come with them) to become part of the MCU canon.

"It's the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting," Feige told B.M.D. " ... [W]e haven't seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie - only John Hughes could - but we're inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven't done before excites us."

And it's not just Hughes who Marvel filmmakers are taken with. Referencing a recent Birth.Movies.Death. editorial about the surprisingly high stakes of current Pixar hit "Inside Out," which features an 11-year-old girl going through a deep, emotional crisis, Feige said that future iterations of Spider-Man would tap into that same sense of life-or-depth feeling to which only adolescents and teenagers can really relate. As Feige tells B.M.D.:

Stakes don't need to be end of the world. Oftentimes, in our films, it is, and in our future films Thanos doesn't work small. But sometimes the stakes can just be 'Will this little girl grow up to be healthy and well put-together, or are there too many issues for her to overcome?' That's HUGE! That overrides a threat to reality itself. And I think Spider-Man straddles that line in a fun way in his comics. What we wanted was a movie where the stakes could be as high as 'This bad person is going to do this bad thing, and a lot of people could die' OR 'You don't get home in time and your aunt is going to figure this out, and your whole life is going to change.'

Hughes and Pixar leave some big shoes to fill, but if anyone is up to the task of taking on beloved cinema, it's box office giant Marvel. Here's hoping Feige and co.'s plans for a more sensitive MCU can meet their own lofty expectations, and live up (and least somewhat) to their inspirations.

There's Going to Be a Parody Musical About 'The O.C.,' Bitch

Posted:

Star Max ArchiveFresh off the success -- and Reese Witherspoon approval -- of "Cruel Intentions: The Musical" comes word that another beloved piece of pop culture is getting the parody stage show treatment.

Variety reports that teen soap "The O.C." will take the stage for a one-night-only musical extravaganza, also produced by the "Cruel Intentions" parody team, and will apparently offer a meta take on the early 2000s, Southern California-set show. According to the trade, "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz will be a character in the production, though he won't be singing.

The role of Schwartz has already been cast, as have the parts of Cohen family matriarch Kirsten and Marissa's high school flame Luke (who uttered the show's instantly-iconic catchphrase, "Welcome to The O.C., bitch!"). No word yet on who has taken those roles, and who the production is eyeing for the rest of the bunch. (Could Adam Brody just appear as Seth Cohen? Please?)

It seems like everything is getting the musical treatment these days, but it kind of makes sense for "The O.C.," which prided itself so highly on its eclectic, indie-tinged soundtrack. Though it remains to be seen if Death Cab For Cutie or Phantom Planet will make the final cut for the show (or prove to be affordable to license), we're expecting nothing less than killer tunes from the production.

The "O.C." parody is slated to take the stage in Los Angeles on August 30. California, here we come...

Jimmy Fallon Is Fine (and Tweeting One-Handed) After Injury

Posted:

On Friday, Jimmy Fallon gave fans a scare when he checked into the hospital for emergency surgery on his hand following a mysterious injury. Today, the host is fine, taking to Twitter to reveal that he's recovering comfortably -- and tweeting with one hand -- thanks to a combination of drugs, Jell-O, and excellent medical staff.

Fallon posted a series of updates to Twitter over the past few days, first showing off a big bandage on his left hand, then explaining what happened: He tripped and caught his fall on a nearby table, but his wedding ring latched onto the table and "almost ripped my finger off."
The injury prompted a trip to the emergency room, where Fallon was immediately scheduled for surgery, and checked into the hospital. The Friday taping of "The Tonight Show," which was set to feature Benicio Del Toro and Taylor Kitsch, was cancelled.

Though the comedian joked that he was "drugged" and "blessed," the injury -- and subsequent recovery time -- was apparently severe enough that Fallon was still in the hospital on Monday. Still, he remained in good humor, tweeting that things were "looking great," and giving a shout-out to "these great doctors and nurses and Jello."
We're glad Fallon is almost back on his feet, and keeping his spirits high. "The Tonight Show" is now on a two-week hiatus (planned before Fallon's injury), but we expect some sort of reference to the incident once the host returns to the airwaves.

5 Things You Need to Know Before You See 'Terminator: Genisys'

Posted:

(SPOILER WARNING: Turn back now if you don't want to know anything about the plot of Arnold's new "Terminator" movie. I mean, more than what the trailers have already spoiled.)

One of the most famous lines uttered by Arnold Schwarzenegger's murder-powered cyborg is "I'll be back." And on July 1, the T-800 will once again be true to his word when "Terminator: Genisys" hits theaters.

The fifth "Terminator" movie aims to robo-punch you right in the nostalgia center, much like "Jurassic World" did, with its twisty, time-travel story that pays homage to the franchise's first two films (while completely, and wisely, ignoring the existence of meh entries "Rise of the Machines" and "Salvation.")

To prepare you for another trip to the land of Skynet, here are all the things you need to know about "Genisys," which picks up where James Cameron's original 1984 film left off.

1. It's a Reboot...Ish
After "Batman Begins," the word "reboot" became the hottest phrase in Hollywood. And "Terminator: Genisys" is the latest product of that craze.

Jason Clarke plays John Connor, a character essayed, in various points in the franchise, by Edward Furlong (in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"), Nick Stahl in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," Thomas Dekker in the "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" television series and Christian Bale in "Terminator: Salvation."

Emilia Clarke, from "Game of Thrones," plays Sarah Connor, a character most famously played by Linda Hamilton on the big screen, and then later by Lena Headey on the small screen in "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." Jai Courtney plays Kyle Reese, played by Michael Biehn in "Terminator" and in a deleted scene from "T2." Most puzzling, South Korean dreamboat Lee Byung-hun plays the T-1000, a character originally portrayed by Robert Patrick in "T2."

But Schwarzenegger remains, as a variation on his original Terminator character. So yes, all your favorite characters from the series have been recast with younger models. But, like all things in the "Terminator" universe, it's a lot more complicated than that.

2. It's Also a Remake
Significant chunks of the film's first act are comprised of recreated scenes and sequences from the first film, with iconic elements from the second film also added in. It's basically a 2015 remix of key moments from the 1984 film; in fact, the film largely plays out like a very expensive "mad lib" to all things "T1" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

This includes Kyle Reese and the Terminator returning from the war-torn future to the comparatively war-free 1984 (full of cold blue lighting and that sequence where Reese, fresh from his naked trip through time, steals a hobo's pants.) It also includes a variation on the T-1000 mall battle from "T2." These sequences have some wrinkles and some additions/embellishments, but some of them are virtually shot-for-shot recreations from those earlier movies. What gives these scenes an extra trippy quality is that a photo-real, CG version of the 1984 model is used, and it battles an older version of itself (affectionately nicknamed "Pops"). Eagle-eyed "Terminator" fanatics will have a lot of fun looking at what the filmmakers recreated. There is, of course, a reason for all of this Xeroxing, and it has to do with the twisty, "timey wimey" nature of the "Terminator" franchise.

3. There's Actually a Reasonable Explanation for Why Arnold is Old
At one point, Reese brings up the fact that "Pops," the Terminator model sent back to a time when Sarah Connor was a little girl, is, you know, old. ("But not obsolete," as Pops reminds us throughout the film.)

The explanation presented for why is, narratively, well-founded: Since the Terminator is a metallic robot endoskeleton wrapped in living human tissue, the outer tissue actually ages. So the fact that the actor is older is actually justifiable. What's more, Pops shows up in 2017 with silver hair. The "rules" in the "Terminator" universe are always sort of hard to pin down (particularly in this most recent installment) but this is one thing that does make sense. (Super-nerdy "Terminator" fans will remember that the flesh outside of Arnold's original robot actually decayed, like a corpse. Remember the landlord who banged on his door wondering what had died in there?)

Apparently, this model knows how to heal a lot better.

4. The Fewer Trailers or TV Spots You Watch, the Better Off You'll Be
When "T2" came out in 1991, all the advertising did a great job of hiding the fact that Arnold was John and Sarah's protector this time around. Audiences didn't realize it until more than 30 minutes into the movie, when they brainsplode'd over seeing the T-800 duking it out with the T-1000 to save young JC.

The marketing for "Genisys" threw all that preservation of plot twists out the window, with the late-in-the-marketing cycle reveal that a certain hero from the post-apocalyptic future becomes the most sophisticated Terminator ever made. This plot detail has been thoroughly ruined (it's even on the poster!), so you're enjoyment of the film will be greatly impacted by how little you now about this twist before buying a ticket.

If you have already watched the trailers for the movie, that's not exactly a deal-breaker; though it still sucks not to have that collective gasp felt more 24 years ago when "T2" was released.

5. The Terminator Will Be Back (Duh)
"Genisys" pulls a Marvel by adding a mid-credits tag that briefly sets up a potential sequel, just as the film's climatic scenes pave the way for a future where, for the first time in over three decades, Sarah Connor is free to choose her own fate.

The effectiveness of these scenes aside, it's up to the almighty Box Office Dollar to determine if Arnuld and Friends will get a sixth-quel. But based on the warmly nostalgic response to "Jurassic World," turning that once-dormant franchise into a money-minting machine, it's safe to say that "Genisys" will enjoy a solid opening weekend. Moreover, the narrative manages to set up new timelines for our characters, both old and new, to play in. (And the film's reliance on multiple time-jumps also serves a tool future storylines will likely use if given the greenlight.)

The mantra of the "Terminator" franchise has always been that there is no fate save for that which we make for ourselves. This despite the fact that, no matter how many times the machines are defeated, Reese, Sarah, John and Pops always find themselves doomed to repeat a different version of similar "save the future" events. With "Genisys," the timeline gets even more complicated and intensified. And while Sarah may finally be in charge of where her life goes, the future of her franchise is all in the hands of the movie-going public.

"Terminator: Genisys" opens everywhere July 1.

'Terminator' Stars: Where Are They Now?

Posted:

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in "Terminator Genisys," but he's the only one from the original franchise. There's a new Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke of "Game of Thrones"), John Connor (Jason Clarke of "Zero Dark Thirty") and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney of "A Good Day to Die Hard.")

But where are the stars who've played these roles in previous films? Interestingly enough, there's a "Terminator" thread that connects them even in other projects (such as Emilia Clarke taking over the role from a "Game of Thrones" costar), almost as if it were ... fate. (Yes, of course there's no fate but what we make.)

Here's what the previous cast and crew have been up to since their "Terminator" days.terminator stars where are they now

'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' Is NOT a Prequel, Dammit

Posted:

harry potter and the cursed child, harry potter, j.k. rowling"Harry Potter" fanatics were no doubt dipping into the butterbeer this weekend after author J.K. Rowling announced that a new, Potter-centric story called "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" would be heading for the London stage next year. But amid all the celebration over the continuing saga of The Boy Who Lived, one detail seems to have slipped through the cracks: the story is not a prequel.

Despite Rowling's initial announcement of "Cursed Child" including that disclaimer (her exact words: "it is not a prequel"), media outlets rushing to cover the news nevertheless repeatedly -- and erroneously -- dubbed the play a prequel. The reports were so numerous that Rowling took to Twitter once again to clarify that point, but it was to no avail, as the news cycle ran with that descriptor ad nausea.
As the weekend wore on, Rowling went from annoyed to angry to amused, finally just openly mocking those who kept insisting the play was a prequel. Her Twitter feed is full of tongue-in-cheek back-and-forth exchanges with fans, and is worth perusing for its biting humor. (We've embedded some of our favorites at the end of this story.)

In the midst of the author's annoyance, however, she did clarify a few behind-the-scenes details about "Cursed Child," one of which is that she did not write the script, but collaborated on the project with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. And for diehard Potterheads, there was one more important bit of intel: "The story of #CursedChild should be considered canon," Rowling wrote.

Rowling also directed interested theatergoers to a website, HarryPotterThePlayLondon.com, where they could get up-to-date info on "Cursed Child." And just in case anyone is still wondering if the play is a prequel, Rowling has uploaded to Twitter a handy, fan-made disclaimer that should answer that question once and for all. (Spoiler alert: It's (still) not a prequel.)

'Project Runway' 2015 Gets Premiere Date, New 'Junior' Spinoff

Posted:

On "Project Runway," one day you're in, and the next day ... you're in three other shows! Lifetime will premiere "Project Runway" Season 14 on Thursday, August 6, with Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia and Zac Posen all returning.
Lifetime also renewed "Project Runway All Stars" for Season 5, to premiere sometime in 2016, with Alyssa Milano, Isaac Mizrahi, Georgina Chapman and Zanna Roberts Rassi returning.

On top of that, Lifetime just announced a new spinoff called "Project Runway Junior," which will premiere this fall, co-hosted by Tim Gunn and supermodel Hannah Davis. It'll follow young designers, ages 14-17, with PR Season 4 winner Christian Siriano as one of the judges, along with fashion editor Aya Kanai. It sounds a lot like "Project Runway: Threads," which aired last year with Christian Siriano as a judge.

"Project Runway" has also produced spinoffs like "Project Accessory" and "Under the Gunn," which -- surprisingly -- did not feature enough Tim Gunn. "Project Runway" Season 14 only started filming a few weeks ago, but it looks like "blackish" star Tracee Ellis Ross will be one of the guest judges: Are you excited to see how Lifetime makes it work with all of these PR shows?

Why Amy Schumer Said No to Replacing Jon Stewart on 'The Daily Show'

Posted:

2015 TIME 100 Gala - ArrivalsJon Stewart, like Beyoncé, is irreplaceable. But he's hosting his last episode of "The Daily Show" on August 6, and Comedy Central wanted someone to replace him. Turns out, it could've been several other people besides the guy they went with -- Trevor Noah. New York Times Magazine revealed that Comedy Central had approached Amy Poehler and Chris Rock, as well as their own "Inside Amy Schumer" host. Amy Schumer confirmed the news to The Daily Beast and explained why she turned down such a great opportunity.

I was so honored to be asked and considered. With Comedy Central, I project so much 'You're my parents!' on the network and the people that run it, so them saying, 'We believe in you and trust that you can do this,' I thought, 'Oh my god, thank you!' And then I thought, 'Well, I could give everyone I love a job and we could all be together for five years.' But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years-I love not knowing. And I've never done anything safe or to make money for that reason. So, you know, I said, 'I can't start now.'"

So she turned down safety and a regular paycheck for the surprise of what might be ahead in the next five years. It would've been refreshing to see a woman join the male dominated late-night hosting world, but more than anything it would've just been fun to see what Amy Schumer would do with the role. (Amy Poehler, too, though. And Chris Rock.)
TV-Daily Show-StewartThen again, would you want to follow Jon Stewart and constantly be compared to the master? Trevor Noah knows he has big shoes to fill, and Amy is doing just fine with her own TV show and budding film career. Maybe she made the right call, but we're left to wonder what "The Daily Show" would look like if she had made a different call.

What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: June 29 - July 5

Posted:

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Get Hard"
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart team up in this comedy about a rich hedge-fund manager who is sentenced to San Quentin; desperate for tips on how to survive prison, he looks for help from a black businessman, assuming he'll know what to do. That's not racist at all! As it turns out, Hart's businessman has never even had a parking ticket, so it's the blind leading the blind. The Blu-ray has tons of extras, including an unrated cut of the film, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and these featurettes: "Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow," "Get Hard Line-O-Ramas," "The Kevin Hart Workout," "Face Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart," "-Ferrell Fighting," "A Date with John Mayer," "Twerking 101," "Will Ferrell, Gangsta," "Inmates: Out of Control," and "Bikers, Babes and Big Bangs."

"While We're Young"
Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a "middle aged" couple who are happily married, but stuck in a rut. When they meet a 20-something free-spirited couple, played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, it's like a breath of fresh air, prompting them to try increasingly ridiculous things in an attempt to act and feel young. Blu-ray special features include these six behind-the-scenes vignettes: "The Cast," "Working with Filmmaker Noah Baumbach," "Generation Tech," "Working with Charles Grodin," "Ayahuasca Ceremony," and "Hip-Hop Class."

"Danny Collins"
Al Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can't give up his hard-living ways. But when he's given a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, it prompts him to reboot his life on every front. It's directed by Dan Fogelman and co-stars Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Garner and Bobby Cannavale. Blu-ray extras include "Behind the Scenes of Danny Collins" and "Danny Collins - Album Covers Through the Years."

New on Netflix

"Knights of Sidonia"
Season 2 of this Netflix Original series will be available on July 3. Set a thousand years after humans flee Earth, the series follows the remnants of humanity traveling in a massive starship called the Sidonia as they fight alien monsters called Guana. Maybe it sounds weird, but it looks cool.

"Alive"
So many new titles are coming to Netflix on July 1, but this one brings us back -- did you watch Ethan Hawke and company on the big screen back in 1993? "Alive" is based on the harrowing true story of the plane crash that left the Uruguay rugby team stranded in the Andes mountains. The survivors basically go through hell to stay alive, and then they have to struggle to live with their guilt. For the record, though, if anything like this happens again and we don't make it and you need to eat ... go ahead. Happy to help.

"Underworld: Evolution"
Kate Beckinsale returns as the ultimate badass vampire in this 2006 sequel to the original "Underworld" movie of 2003. "Evolution," which also stars Scott Speedman, was followed by the prequel "Rise of the Lycans," then "Awakening," which is a sequel to "Underworld." Beckinsale is set to return as Selene in "Underworld: Next Generation" in 2016. They say vampires are immortal, and apparently so is this franchise.

TV Worth Watching

"Extant" (Wednesday on CBS at 10 p.m.)
Halle Berry's trippy sci-fi drama is back for Season 2 starting July 1. The premiere, titled "Change Scenario" has this official synopsis from CBS: "Six months after her life unraveled and dark secrets were revealed, Molly (Halle Berry) is confined to a psychiatric hospital when she learns of bizarre deaths that sound eerily similar to those she witnessed in space. When she escapes to investigate, she crosses paths with JD Richter, a determined cop who just signed on to the case." Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins the cast as JD Richter, a cop and bounty hunter who thrives on solving the unsolvable.

"Penny Dreadful" (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.)
Showtime's horror drama is coming back for Season 3, but first the 10 episodes of Season 2 must end -- and end they shall on July 5 with "And They Were Enemies." (Good title.) According to Showtime, "Vanessa (Eva Green) must rely on her strength to defeat the Demon."

"Inside Amy Schumer" (Tuesday on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.)
Comedy Central now has a great Tuesday night lineup: They have Amy Schumer at 10 p.m., followed by the new turn-of-the-century sitcom "Another Period" at 10:30 (think Keeping Up with Downton Abbey), then "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" at 11. On June 30, the party starts as Amy journeys through time; listens to awful stories; and gives a whole town an STD. Unmissable!

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"Lone Survivor" (HBO NOW)
Back in April, HBO launched its new standalone streaming service, HBO NOW, featuring HBO's new and classic programming, plus the latest movies. On July 1, they are adding several titles, including "Inside Man," "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," "Dawn of the Dead," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and "Lone Survivor," the Mark Wahlberg film based on a true story about a Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan.

"Fargo" (Hulu)
Hulu is also getting a ton of new titles on July 1 -- from the classic "Annie Hall" to "WarGames," "Mystic Pizza," "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and even "The Human Centipede: First Sequence." But one you should definitely check out -- especially if you've never seen it -- is "Fargo," the 1996 Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress. The Coen Bros., Frances McDormand and William H. Macy knocked it out of the park in this strangely moving crime drama with an impeccable score from Carter Burwell.

"Downton Abbey" (Amazon Prime)
Amazon Prime is also getting a lot of great movie titles in early July (at the start of the month, there are always several options), including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Bad News Bears," "Glory," Gandhi," "Dr. Strangelove," "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Dirty Dancing." But now is also a good time to catch up on "Downton Abbey" before Season 6, so if you are not up to date on Season 5, Amazon Prime has it starting July 1.

'Suicide Squad' Only Has Three Girls, But 'They Have the Best Roles'

Posted:

What's more important: Quantity or quality? Cara Delevingne is playing Enchantress in "Suicide Squad," a superhero/villain movie based on the DC Comics characters, and she said the few female roles in the movie are the best roles.

Will Smith has arguably the lead role as Deadshot, with Jared Leto as Joker, and Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez, Scott Eastwood, Common, Jim Parrack, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje picking up other main roles. But Margot Robbie has one of the most anticipated roles as Harley Quinn -- she's front and center in the character photo above -- and Karen Fukuhara is taking on the role of Katana. Viola Davis plays Amanda Waller, who has no superpowers, but she's the head of the agency so that's its own power, even outside the Squad.

Delevingne -- who is everywhere lately -- talked to Empire Magazine about the movie, and superhero films in general. "There are only three girls in [the Suicide Squad] but in my opinion they have the best roles," she said (via Yahoo). "Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist. Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No-one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute."

At the very least Wonder Woman would be a little chilly on a cool night, but Harley Quinn also lacks a bit of cover-up, as the photo above hints. Plus, check out the pic below. Director David Ayer retweeted this Instagram pic from a fan who noted, "Crazy to think Harley Quinn is going to be on the big screen in just over a year. #DCCU @DavidAyerMovies":

Size and clothing do not sum up a person's powers, and we already figured Harley would be one of the best characters of "Suicide Squad." Now we're looking forward to seeing the other women in action as well. "Suicide Squad" is scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016.

7 Intentionally Misspelled Movie Titles

Posted:

It seems that every few years Hollywood releases a movie with an intentionally misspelled movie title. Why? Because they hate us. Because sometimes it makes sense. Listen up, filmmakers: even when there's a "reason" for the alternate spelling, it's annoying. Do you know how hard it is for us to find your movie when we can't remember exactly how to misspell it? It makes our heads hurt, and then it makes us angry.

This weekend's "Terminator Genisys" is the latest in a string of annoyingly misspelled movie titles. In honor of its puzzling spelling, here are seven movie titles that left us scratching our heads. Did 'True Detective' Just Pull a 'Game of Thrones' With a Main Character?!

Posted:

*SPOILERS ahead from last night's "True Detective" Season 2*

Only two episodes of "True Detective" Season 2 have aired on HBO, and we're still trying to figure out the characters' names and motivations (beyond a lot of scowling). At this point, we're still following them as Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch. And after Episode 2, "Night Finds You," maybe there's no Colin Farrell anymore?

Farrell plays Detective Ray Velcoro, opposite McAdams as Detective Ani Bezzerides, Kitsch as Officer Paul Woodrugh and Vaughn as criminal entrepreneur Frank Semyon. "Night Finds You" ended with Farrell's Ray Velcoro shot multiple times by someone wearing a mask -- a black bird mask. And it's HBO. And a main character may or may not be dead. This is too close to "Game of Thrones" to ignore. Jon Snow just got stabbed by his fellow "crows" in the Season 5 finale and may or may not ever return. Farrell's Ray Velcoro definitely got shot at close range, but did he die or not?

Check it out:

As Vanity Fair asked:

Did that really happen? Did a man in a raven mask really sneak up on Colin Farrell and put a couple of bullets in his chest in front of a copy of Araki. Tokyo Lucky Hole while Bobby Bland's "I Pity the Fool" played in the background? Oh yes, and we'll have to wait until next week to see if our lead detective made it out of the episode alive. That's the kind of high-stakes batshittery we had come to expect from True Detective Season 1."

This is one way to get people to tune in for Episode 3! The July 5 third episode, "Maybe Tomorrow," has this synopsis from HBO: "Paul works the prostitute angle while Frank receives the first casualty in a secret war, and steps back into a world he'd left behind."

Casualty? So did they just pull a Ned Stark, or is this more of a Jon Snow in that maybe Ray is not SO dead that he won't come back anyway? Fans have mentioned seeing leaked photos of Colin on set in a shootout that has yet to air, so we can still hope that a vest saved Ray's life.

'Top Gun 2' Script in Works With 'Amazing Role' for Tom Cruise's Maverick

Posted:

"Top Gun 2" feels no need for speed. The original came out in May 1986 and we've been talking about a sequel for years. But it sounds like stuff is finally in motion on Maverick's (Tom Cruise) second round, with Skydance CEO David Ellison giving Collider an update during press day for "Terminator Genisys" in Berlin.

Way back in 2010, Tony Scott was being considered to direct, with Christopher McQuarrie charged with writing the script. Sadly, much has changed -- Scott died in 2012 and it sounds like McQuarrie is no longer on board for the script. Here's the latest from Ellison:

Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

Collider made sure to confirm they meant Tom Cruise as Maverick, not some new guy in the role. Ellison also discussed technical details of the movie and more on the modern plot:

...Absolutely, I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically. As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically. When you look at the world of dogfighting, what's interesting about it is that it's not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce so it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie."

It would be nice to see this movie relatively soon, especially since 2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the original "Top Gun." That timing looks good, and hopefully The Powers That Be are on the same wavelength. Are you excited to see Maverick back in the sky or is it too little too late?

'Nurse Jackie' Series Finale Ends With Big Question: Showrunner Explains

Posted:

Edie Falco's "Nurse Jackie" ended last night after seven seasons on Showtime. What happened? Your call.

*Spoilers ahead*

The series finale showed addict Jackie continuing her spiral, snorting several lines of heroin, collapsing and looking like she might die -- as Zoey (Merritt Wever) stroked her hair and told her she's "good." So here's the big question for showrunner Clyde Phillips: Did Jackie die? Here's what he told The Hollywood Reporter:

It is left to the viewers to figure out. One of the reasons why there's a question is because Edie Falco is so brilliant. Imagine lying on the floor in them middle of 60 people with a camera in your face and giving just enough of an eye flutter and just enough of a move of her lips that you think, "Maybe!" But you don't know. I personally think she's alive. Others don't. We had a long conversation with the network about it and one of the things we wanted to do was to keep the conversation going after the show ends with a good and healthy debate because this is really a show about the affects of a ferocious disease - drug addiction - on an otherwise healthy person."

As he told Variety:

One of our ambitions has always been to have people understand the ferocity of the disease she has, and to have compassion. If Jackie had cancer, everybody would be completely compassionate. This disease she has causes her to hurt other people because it's such a narcissistic disease. All she cares about is her next hit."

Phillips told Variety the team went into the finale with a different ending in mind: They originally planned to have Jackie appear to die after a fire breaks out in the ER. Jackie was going to head into the flames to save the heroin addict handcuffed to a hospital bed in the basement. But this version does seem more honest to Jackie, and it shows her as the last person treated at All Saints Hospital.

What did you think of the finale, and do you love or hate when TV shows have ambiguous endings?

Nia Vardalos and (Shirtless) John Corbett Wrap 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2'

Posted:

Grab some Windex and maybe give yourself the first spritz after checking out the full photo of John Corbett in all his shirtless glory. Opa! That Toula is a lucky woman. (And that Ian is a lucky man.) Nia Vardalos became a major star back in 2002 thanks to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and she and Corbett are returning for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," which is scheduled for a March 25, 2016 release.

Sequel filming started in late May in Toronto and just wrapped, which we know because Vardalos kindly shared some photos from set. A few days ago, she shared this shot with Corbett, joking, "Is someone trying to get baptized again in #MyBigFatGreekWedding2?":

Then she updated to say it's a wrap for filming:

Ahhh, just wrapped #MyBigFatGreekWedding2, thank you splendid cast & crew.

But hold on a sec -- you can't have a Big Fat Greek Wedding without an actual wedding, so here's a photo from a few weeks ago, showing some nuptials to be filmed:

I love Background Actors, especially ours who applauded after scenes today. #MyBigFatGreekWedding2

Lookin' good! "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" will also star Joy Fatone, John Stamos, Andrea Martin, Rita Wilson, Ian Gomez, Elene Kampouris and Louis Mandylor. Are you excited to see this next year?
