Film Face-off: 'San Andreas' vs 'Earthquake' Posted: 01 Jun 2015 10:00 PM PDT Disaster is around every corner at the cineplex. Literally. The latest incarnation of massive destruction is led by our biggest, typically sweatiest, hero Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson with San Andreas. Is this the only time California has been rocked by an earthquake on the big screen? As Yoda told Obi-Won, "No, there is another." What do those iconic Star Wars characters have to do with natural disasters? Nothing, it's just a terrible segue, which both of these films have in common! Earthquake came out in 1974, starring Charlton Heston and featuring Sensurround, which was a short-lived sound system that meant low-frequency sounds were more felt than heard. After 41 years, has Hollywood perfected quaking on the big screen? Let's find out in this week's... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 01 Jun 2015 09:40 PM PDT John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is about as sublimely perfect as a movie can get. Kurt Russell is just impossibly good as Jack Burton, a bumbling truck driver who finds himself caught up in an increasingly weird plot involving kidnapped women and an ancient Chinese sorcerer who needs to make them his brides in order to regain his true form. The phrase "they don't make them like they used to" doesn't even apply to Big Trouble in Little China, because nobody ever really made movies like it. Big Trouble is a truly unique gem for its stars, its genre, and its director. And it still gets better and better every single time you watch it. So of course it's getting remade. But it's not all doom and gloom! According to The Wrap, the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Jason Statham To Replace Daniel Craig in 'Layer Cake' Sequel Posted: 01 Jun 2015 07:30 PM PDT 2004's Layer Cake is a smart, sexy, darkly funny story about a drug dealer whose only way out of the criminal lifestyle means pulling off two very different final assignments. Not only did it give the world a great movie, but it was also a sort of center stage introduction to star Daniel Craig and director Matthew Vaughn. Now, over a decade later, Layer Cake is getting a sequel, only don't expect it to be directed by Vaughn or to star Daniel Craig. After talking about it for a few years, Jason Statham has confirmed he's going to star and produce Viva La Madness. Though the main faces in front of and behind the camera are changing, there is one very important figure who isn't. JJ Connolly wrote Layer Cake based on his own book and he'll be returning to do the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The New 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2' Poster Teases an All-Out War Posted: 01 Jun 2015 06:01 PM PDT As the Hunger Games franchise nears its end this November 20, we're beginning to get a sense of what to expect from the finale -- especially in this new poster for Mockingjay - Part 2, which riffs off the posters from Mockingjay - Part 1 by including the same statue of Donald Sutherland's villainous President Snow, only it's broken and defaced. Check it out below. The poster teases the kind of finale we're expecting from the Hunger Games -- one that finally sees a full revolt against the Capitol, with the revolutionaries using the symbolic Mockingjay tied to Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss as their calling sign. Here's the official synopsis: "With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland... Superman Fights Wonder Woman in Concept Art for George Miller's Cancelled 'Justice League' Movie Posted: 01 Jun 2015 06:00 PM PDT Your first look at Justice League: Mortal has arrived. No, this isn't for the Justice League movies in the works from Zack Snyder and due in 2017 and 2019, following next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This is the Justice League movie that was in the works years ago from Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller. These are images that will never be used, having been conceived for a movie that will never be made. There is a documentary being made about the cancelled project, though, and over the weekend its filmmakers began sharing concept art and other materials collected for the feature. Tentatively titled Miller's Justice League Mortal, the doc aims to be similar to other recent works on failed films, namely Jodorowsky's... Posted: 01 Jun 2015 04:45 PM PDT There are countless filmmakers who join Twitter just to promote their next project. So far that hasn't been the case with Vincenzo Natali. The director of Cube, Nothing, Splice, and Haunter recently joined Twitter, but he's not just drumming up promo for new episodes of Hannibal (he's a regular director on the series), he's actually sharing details on a ton of his past movies that never came to be. Natali has been attached to a handful of big projects in the decades since Cube blew people's minds, perhaps most notably an adaptation of the seminal cyberpunk book Neuromancer, but he's tried to get even more movies off the ground that most never even knew were a possibility. He's shared concept art for Predator, Stephen King's It, an... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Nevermind: Disney Pulls Plug on 'Tron 3' Posted: 01 Jun 2015 02:00 PM PDT Update 6/1/15: If you need a reminder of how fickle Hollywood can be, it took less than two months to go from "Tron 3 is happening this fall!" to "Tron 3 is definitely not happening." There is no specific reason given for Disney dropping the project, though if you look at the big box office for movies like Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland, and then look at the much smaller numbers for movies like Tron: Legacy and Tomorrowland, you can make a pretty good guess as to why they pulled the plug. But, if you are the eternally optimistic Tron fan, there is a petition to get the third movie going again. Good luck. Previously 3/11/15: Yesterday a blog dedicated to news in and around Vancouver broke the word that Disney was booking some of the city's... Posted: 01 Jun 2015 01:30 PM PDT Spider-Man: Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game, above left) has been rumored to be the new Spider-Man, but other actors reportedly tested for the role over the weekend, including Tom Holland (The Impossible, above right) and four young hopefuls: Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz (Pixels), Charlie Plummer (TV's Boardwalk Empire), and Charlie Rowe (TV's Red Band Society). The latest rumor suggests that Marvel could make a decision as soon as this week. [Heat Vision] Jurassic World: Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) has already lined up a couple of post-dinosaur projects, and now he says that he won't be directing the next installment in the franchise. "Different directors can give a different taste to each movie" he says. "I would be involved in some... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
